Our Road Trips Itineraries
Malmö's genuine advantage in this network is being a two-country base that most visitors treat as a single-country afterthought. Skåne's own Österlen coast, Söderåsen's gorge country, and Lund's university town sit entirely on the Swedish side, reachable without a single bridge toll, while Copenhagen and the whole of Zealand remain a single 16 km crossing away whenever you're ready for it. No purely Danish depot offers this same Swedish-first radius without a second border crossing.
The specific experience only a self-contained vehicle unlocks here is timing Skåne's seasonal landscape rather than just its cities. Rapeseed fields around Österlen turn a genuine, vivid yellow in May, a specific and short window that a fixed hotel itinerary in Copenhagen or central Malmö would likely miss entirely; a campervan lets you chase that color along the coast road on the exact days it peaks, then adjust the rest of the route around it.
Malmö Airport (MMX, Sturup, GPS 55.5363°N, 13.3762°E) sits roughly 30 km/25-30 minutes from the depot and from central Malmö, served mainly by domestic Swedish and a handful of European routes; a taxi runs roughly SEK 400-600 (€35-53) depending on traffic. Copenhagen Airport (CPH, Kastrup, GPS 55.6180°N, 12.6476°E) is the busier international option, roughly 45 km/40 minutes from the depot across the Öresund Bridge, worth checking if your international routing favors it over Malmö's smaller airport.
From the depot, the destinations that matter most: central Malmö at 15 km/15 min, Lund at 25 km/25 min, Söderåsens National Park at 65 km/50 min, Helsingborg at 65 km/50 min, Ystad at 60 km/50 min, Kivik at 95 km/1h15, Copenhagen (across the bridge) at 37 km/33 min.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Malmö rental companies:
Unlimited mileage. A full Skåne circuit, Söderåsen, Österlen, Lund, and Helsingborg, easily clears 300-400 km before you've even considered a Copenhagen extension, and adding that pushes it well past 450 km. Most competitors cap daily mileage at 200-250 km and bill per extra kilometer past that. Indie Campers doesn't cap it, so chasing an extra stretch of coast road or a second Öresund crossing doesn't turn into a surprise charge at drop-off.
One-way rentals across multiple locations. Pick up in Malmö and drop off in Stockholm, Oslo, or another confirmed Nordic depot instead of retracing the same route back. This is a genuine advantage for travelers building a longer Scandinavian trip rather than a Skåne-only loop.
24/7 road assistance, included on every booking, useful on Söderåsen's and Fyledalen's more rural approach roads, or on the Öresund Bridge corridor at an odd hour, since bridge-adjacent breakdowns come with their own logistics.
Basic Protection Plan included, with optional upgrades available at booking if you'd rather have a lower excess before tackling central Malmö's or Lund's tighter old-town streets.
Flexible cancellation available up to 31 days before pickup, useful if you're timing the trip around Österlen's rapeseed bloom in May or apple harvest in September, both of which shift slightly year to year with the weather.
Book now, pay later option available, so full payment isn't due until closer to departure.
Winter (December to February)
Temperatures: -1 to 4°C (30-39°F). Malmö and Lund both run Christmas markets through December, and Söderåsen's beech forest takes on a stark, quiet character under occasional snow. Most rural Skåne campsites reduce hours or close for the season.
Best for: a short city-and-Christmas-market trip based around Malmö and Lund.
Skip if: Söderåsen's forest trails or the Österlen coast road are the priority; both are considerably less appealing in near-freezing coastal wind, and some coastal cafés close for the season.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 3-14°C (37-57°F). Söderåsen's beech canopy leafs out fresh through May, and this is the single best window for Österlen's rapeseed fields, which turn a vivid yellow for a few weeks, typically peaking mid-to-late May depending on the year's weather.
Best for: chasing the rapeseed bloom along the Österlen coast road, and hiking Söderåsen before summer crowds; book campsites 2-3 weeks ahead for late May.
Skip if: warm-water beach time at Ribersborgsstranden is the goal; the Öresund stays cold well into May.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 14-22°C (57-72°F). Peak season across the board: Malmö's beach parks fill, Ystad's old town runs its busiest tourist calendar, and the Öresund Bridge sees its heaviest holiday traffic if you extend to Copenhagen, particularly Friday and Sunday afternoons.
Best for: the full Skåne circuit plus a Copenhagen extension, and beach time in Malmö; book campsites near Ystad and central Skåne at least a month ahead.
Skip if: you want to avoid weekend bridge congestion on a Copenhagen add-on; plan crossings for a weekday.
Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures: 4-15°C (39-59°F). Kivik's apple orchards run their harvest season through September and into October, a genuinely local Skåne tradition with roadside stalls and orchard visits, and Söderåsen's beech forest turns a deep gold through October, one of the better foliage displays in this part of Scandinavia.
Best for: the Kivik apple harvest and Söderåsen foliage, both distinctly quieter than summer.
Skip if: you're relying on long daylight hours for late-afternoon hikes; daylight shortens fast into November.
The most popular months for Malmö campervan rentals are June, July, and August.
The Österlen Loop (approximately 180 km, 3-4 days)
Day 1: Pick up at the depot, spend the afternoon in central Malmö, Malmöhus Castle and Möllevångstorget market. Overnight at First Camp Sibbarp, Malmö's edge (GPS approximately 55.585°N, 12.930°E).
Day 2: Drive to Ystad (60 km) for the old town, then continue to Kivik (a further 45 km) for the apple orchards and King's Grave. Overnight at a campsite near Kivik or Simrishamn.
Day 3: Return along the coast, stopping at smaller Österlen fishing villages. Overnight back near Malmö or Lund.
Days 4-5 (extending): Add Lund's cathedral and university quarter (25 km from the depot) before drop-off.
The Söderåsen and Helsingborg Loop (approximately 150 km, 3-4 days)
Day 1: Pick up, central Malmö. Overnight at First Camp Sibbarp.
Day 2: Drive to Söderåsens National Park (65 km), the Skäralid gorge trail. Overnight at a campsite near the park.
Day 3: Continue to Helsingborg (a further stretch north) for the Kärnan tower and strait views toward Denmark. Overnight near Helsingborg.
Day 4: Return to Malmö via Lund.
Malmö-Söderåsen-Österlen-Copenhagen Loop (approximately 400 km, 7-8 days)
Days 1-2: Malmö and Lund as above.
Day 3: Söderåsens National Park (65 km). Overnight near the park.
Day 4: Helsingborg and the strait, then back south. Overnight near Malmö.
Day 5: Cross the Öresund Bridge (16 km) to Copenhagen. Tivoli Gardens and Nyhavn. Overnight at a Copenhagen-area campsite.
Day 6: Return across the bridge to the Österlen coast, Ystad's old town. Overnight near Ystad.
Days 7-8: Kivik's orchards and King's Grave, then return to the depot via the coast road.
Follow the 7-10 day circuit above, then instead of returning to the depot, continue north through Sweden on the E4/E6 toward Stockholm (approximately 615 km, about 7 hours) for a one-way drop-off, turning the trip into a genuine Scandinavian road trip rather than a there-and-back loop. This uses confirmed Indie Campers depots only.
Fuel Stations
Diesel in Sweden runs approximately €1.71/liter (roughly 19.5 SEK), reflecting a weaker exchange rate against the euro rather than a genuinely cheap price; petrol runs similarly. A Circle K or OKQ8 station in Tygelsjö, close to the depot itself, is the practical first and last fill-up. A station on the E6 near Lund is a sensible stop before heading north to Söderåsen or Helsingborg. Heading toward Österlen, fill up in Ystad before continuing to Kivik, where options thin out along the smaller coastal roads.
LPG
Available at larger stations in Malmö, Lund, and Helsingborg; less consistent in the smaller Österlen villages, so plan LPG refills around the larger towns rather than rural stops.
Dump Stations
First Camp Sibbarp in Malmö and campsites near Ystad and Helsingborg all run dump points as standard. No dedicated dump station directly at Söderåsen, Fyledalen, or Kivik; plan tank management around the named campsites instead.
Essential Apps
A Swedish fuel-price comparison app to track the (generally modest) regional price spread. The Öresundsbron app if extending to Copenhagen, for pre-booking bridge tolls and checking real-time crossing times. Offline maps for Söderåsen's and Fyledalen's forest interiors, where signal is reliable but trail-level detail benefits from a downloaded map regardless.
Minimum renter age is 21; a valid credit card is required at pickup for the security deposit. Non-EU/non-Nordic drivers should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home license.
Malmö itself has no congestion charge or bridge toll to plan around; the only toll relevant to this itinerary is the Öresund Bridge, and only if you extend into Denmark. Buy a ticket online via the Öresundsbron site or app ahead of each crossing for the best rate.
Book Österlen-area campsites (Ystad, Kivik, Simrishamn) at least 2-3 weeks ahead for July-August, and specifically around the May rapeseed bloom or September apple harvest if timing the trip to those seasonal windows. Söderåsen and Lund-area sites are generally easier to book on shorter notice.
Cross-border driving into Denmark within the EU/Schengen area is standard on Indie Campers bookings and doesn't require separate insurance arrangements beyond what's already included, but confirm this explicitly at booking if your itinerary includes the Öresund Bridge crossing.
Speed Limits
Swedish motorways run 110-120 km/h, dropping to 70-80 km/h on rural main roads and 50 km/h in town centers, down to 30 km/h in some residential zones. Automated speed cameras are common on the E6 corridor.
Road Conditions
The E6 running north-south through Skåne is a modern, well-maintained motorway for its entire length relevant to this itinerary. Rural roads through Österlen and toward Söderåsen and Fyledalen are ordinary two-lane roads, generally well-surfaced but narrower through village centers.
Driving Culture
Swedish driving culture is orderly and rule-following by broader European standards; lane discipline is strong and horn use is rare. Headlights on at all times is standard practice, and it's worth adopting from day one of the rental regardless of season.
RV-Specific
Parking in central Malmö and Lund is limited to designated lots; there is no practical RV street parking in either city center. Height clearance matters most in some of Lund's and Ystad's older streets; confirm posted restrictions before a tight approach. No specific propane or tunnel restrictions apply on this route.
Legal
Sweden's BAC limit is strict at 0.2 g/L, among the lowest in Europe, with fines and potential license suspension for even a modest violation. If extending across the Öresund Bridge into Denmark, note Denmark's limit is looser at 0.5 g/L; treat Sweden's stricter standard as the baseline for the whole trip regardless of which side of the bridge you're on.
Malmö, Söderåsen, and Österlen Circuit (approximately 350 km)
RV rental for a mid-size campervan over seven days runs in a broad range depending on season and category; July-August peak pricing runs well above May, September, or October rates.
Fuel: at roughly 350 km round trip and typical campervan consumption, that works out to approximately 70-88 liters of diesel at approximately €1.71/liter, putting fuel at roughly €120-150 for the week.
Tolls: €0, since this circuit stays entirely on the Swedish side and Malmö charges no congestion tax; budget an additional €47-126 one-way only if extending across the Öresund Bridge into Denmark, depending on whether you book online in advance or pay at the booth.
Campgrounds: seven nights across First Camp Sibbarp, a Söderåsen-area site, and an Österlen-area site average out to roughly €24-34/night, so budget €168-238 for the week's pitches.
Food: for a week blending Swedish grocery self-catering (ICA, Coop) with a handful of restaurant meals, a Möllevångstorget lunch or Österlen harbor-side dinner, figure €30-55 per person per day.
Activities: Malmöhus Castle entry around €3.50-5.50/adult, Kivik's King's Grave a modest entry fee, Lund Cathedral free; a typical castle-and-coast-focused week runs €40-80 for two adults.
Parking: largely covered by campsite fees, with a few euros for designated lots in central Malmö or Lund.
Budget (2 people, 7 days, vehicle rental not included): approximately €550-720. Assumes a California-category van, cooking most meals, and free or low-cost activities, staying entirely on the Swedish side.
Mid-range (2 people, 7 days, vehicle rental not included): approximately €850-1,150. Assumes an Active-category vehicle, a mix of cooking and restaurant meals, and a one-day Copenhagen extension with an advance-booked bridge toll.
Premium (2 people, 7 days, vehicle rental not included): approximately €1,400-1,900. Assumes a Comfort-category motorhome, peak summer timing, frequent restaurant meals, full-hookup campsite pitches throughout, and a multi-day Copenhagen extension with standard walk-up bridge toll pricing.
Malmö and Skåne run genuinely more affordable than a Copenhagen-inclusive itinerary, since staying on the Swedish side avoids the Öresund Bridge toll entirely and Sweden's food and activity costs sit comfortably below Denmark's. The primary cost lever on this trip is simply whether or not you cross the bridge, and if so, whether you book that toll online in advance.
Malmö to Stockholm: approximately 615 km via the E4/E6, about 7 hours. A long north-south run through the length of Sweden, passing Jönköping and Lake Vättern; worth doing one-way if the plan is to continue into central Sweden rather than retrace the same 615 km back south.
Malmö to Oslo: approximately 520 km via the E6, about 6 hours. A cross-border run north through western Sweden into Norway, turning a Skåne trip into a two-country Scandinavian itinerary.
Malmö to Berlin: approximately 500 km via the E20/E45 through Denmark and Germany, about 5 hours. A longer continental option for travelers extending the trip well south of Scandinavia.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.
Malmö's real value in this network is being a genuine Swedish base that most itineraries reduce to a Copenhagen footnote. Söderåsen's beech gorge, Österlen's orchard coast, and Lund's university quarter sit entirely on the Swedish side, reachable without a single euro or krona spent on a bridge toll, and Copenhagen remains a single 16 km crossing away whenever the trip calls for it. No purely Danish depot offers this same toll-free Swedish radius, and few Swedish depots put a UNESCO-caliber Danish castle and capital city within a single bridge crossing the way Malmö does.
The singular experience only available from this starting point is timing Skåne's specific seasonal windows, the May rapeseed bloom along the Österlen coast road, or the September apple harvest around Kivik, in a way a Copenhagen-based hotel stay never would, since those visitors rarely cross the bridge west at all.
The departure morning worth building in: an early walk along Ribersborgsstranden, with the Öresund Bridge visible on the horizon and the Kallbadhus bathhouse just opening for the day, followed by a coffee and kanelbulle from a Möllevångstorget bakery before loading the van. Then point the vehicle north toward Söderåsen's forest gorge, or east along the coast road toward Österlen's orchards, and let Skåne's own varied landscape take over from there.
