Our Road Trips Itineraries
Portugal rewards slow, deliberate movement in a way that a fixed hotel base actively works against. The country's driving distances are short by European standards, but the density of what sits along the way, medieval hilltop towns, Roman ruins, cork forests, fishing villages that still land their catch on the beach, means a road trip through Portugal is defined by frequent stops rather than long transfers. An RV lets you camp on the Alentejo coast at Comporta one night and wake up at the Évora Roman temple the next morning without a single hotel checkout in between.
The geography does the selling. Sintra's palace complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape since 1995, includes the Pena Palace (built 1839-1854, a riot of Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline styles perched at 450 metres), the Moorish Castle walls dating to the 8th and 9th centuries, and the Quinta da Regaleira with its 27-metre Initiation Well. All of it is 30 minutes from Lisbon and none of it is a comfortable single-day drive-in-drive-out from a city hotel if you also want Cabo da Roca and a Cascais beach afternoon in the same trip. The Arrábida Natural Park's Praia da Figueirinha and Praia dos Galapinhos, regularly rated among Europe's best beaches, sit within a protected coastal range that has almost no hotel development by design; campervan access via the Serra da Arrábida scenic road is how most visitors actually reach them.
Further out, the Alentejo is 27% of Portugal's landmass and produces roughly 40% of the world's cork, yet carries a fraction of the Algarve's tourist infrastructure. Évora, Monsaraz, and the Alqueva reservoir (Europe's largest artificial lake, created in 2002) reward a multi-day loop that no hotel-and-day-trip structure can replicate. The accommodation economics reinforce the case directly: a July night in a central Lisbon hotel runs €150 to €300; a full-hookup pitch at a Comporta or Arrábida area campsite runs €25 to €45.
Spring (March-May)
Temperatures: 13-22°C (55-72°F)
Lisbon and the surrounding coast are at their most comfortable: warm enough for coastal walking and Sintra exploring without the summer crowds or heat. The Alentejo interior is at its most scenic, with wildflowers across the cork oak plains through April. Campsite availability is excellent outside the Easter week. Water temperatures remain cool (16-18°C) so this is a sightseeing and hiking season rather than a beach season.
Best for: Sintra, Óbidos, and the Alentejo interior without crowds; travellers prioritising comfortable driving and walking temperatures over beach time.
Skip if: Beach swimming is the priority; Atlantic water temperatures stay cool until June.
Summer (June-August)
Temperatures: 20-29°C (68-84°F), higher inland in the Alentejo (regularly exceeding 35°C)
Peak season throughout Portugal. Lisbon hosts the Santos Populares festivities in June, filling Alfama and Graça with street parties. The Algarve and Comporta coast are at their busiest; campsites within the Sintra-Cascais park and along the Alentejo coast require booking weeks to months ahead for July and August. The Alentejo interior, including Évora, becomes genuinely hot; plan interior sightseeing for morning or early evening. Coastal areas remain comfortable due to Atlantic moderation.
Best for: Beach time on the Sintra-Cascais and Alentejo coasts; families wanting the full Portuguese summer experience; anyone targeting Santos Populares in June.
Skip if: You want to avoid the Alentejo interior heat or the Algarve's peak crowds; consider May or September instead for Évora and inland circuits.
Autumn (September-November)
Temperatures: 14-24°C (57-75°F)
Arguably the best season for a comprehensive Portugal circuit: warm enough for coastal time through October, cooler and more comfortable for Alentejo and Évora sightseeing, and the Nazaré big wave season begins in October for travellers interested in that spectacle. Campsite rates drop from September and availability improves significantly. The wine harvest (vindima) in the Alentejo runs September into October, adding a seasonal dimension to any winery visit.
Best for: Combining coastal time with inland sightseeing without summer heat or crowds; wine harvest season in the Alentejo; Nazaré big wave season beginning in October.
Skip if: You specifically want guaranteed warm Atlantic swimming; water temperatures cool through October and November.
Winter (December-February)
Temperatures: 8-15°C (46-59°F)
Lisbon remains a mild, functioning city year-round; this is Portugal's least crowded and cheapest season. The Nazaré big wave season is in full swing, with the biggest recorded waves typically occurring in winter storm swells. Campsite operation is reduced; confirm year-round opening with individual sites before departure. Coastal winds and rain are more frequent, though rarely severe by northern European standards.
Best for: Budget travellers; Nazaré big wave spectating; Lisbon city sightseeing without crowds or heat.
Skip if: Beach or extensive outdoor camping is the priority; conditions are workable but not ideal, and some coastal campsites reduce services or close.
The most popular months for Lisbon campervan rentals are June, July, and August.

Fuel Stations
Portugal fuel note: Portuguese fuel prices are broadly comparable to the western European average and slightly above neighbouring Spain.
Average fuel price: €1.65-1.85/litre diesel; €1.75-1.95/litre petrol (2026 estimate).
LPG/Autogas Refill
Portugal's LPG (GPL) network is moderate in coverage, concentrated around Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve, with significant gaps in the rural Alentejo interior.
Average LPG price in Portugal: approximately €0.75-0.90/litre (2026 estimate).
Dump Stations (Áreas de Serviço para Autocaravanas)
Portugal has a well-developed network of dedicated motorhome service areas (áreas de serviço), generally more extensive than in Spain, reflecting the country's strong campervan tourism culture.
Essential Apps
Age and License Requirements
Minimum rental age: 21 years.
EU license holders: A full EU driving license is valid in Portugal without additional documentation.
International visitors (non-EU): An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended alongside your national license. Obtain your IDP from your home country's automobile association before departure; it is not available at Portuguese airports or rental counters.
Credit Card and Deposit
A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pickup. Debit cards and prepaid cards are not accepted. The security deposit is held on the credit card at pickup; the amount varies by vehicle class and selected protection plan. Confirm the exact deposit amount during the booking process at indiecampers.com.
National Park and Attraction Passes
Portugal has no unified national park pass. Entry to the Arrábida, Sintra-Cascais, and Sudoeste Alentejano natural parks is free; the Sintra palace complex charges individual or combined tickets. The Lisboa Card covers public transport and discounted or free entry to many Lisbon city attractions; worth calculating against individual ticket costs for a 2-day city stay before departure.
Reservation Systems
Book campsites through Orbitur (Portugal's largest campsite operator), Roteiro Campista (the standard Portuguese campsite directory), or directly through individual campsite websites.
Speed Limits
Road Conditions
Driving Culture
Portugal drives on the right-hand side of the road. Portuguese driving style on motorways tends toward higher speeds than posted limits in the outside lane; maintain the right lane at a comfortable campervan pace and let faster traffic pass. Roundabouts are common in place of traffic lights on N-roads; traffic already in the roundabout has priority.
Tolls (Portagens): Many Portuguese motorways operate on an all-electronic tolling system with no toll booths; a Via Verde transponder or rental company toll pass is required. Confirm the toll payment arrangement with Indie Campers at pickup, as unregistered passage results in a fine plus administrative surcharge.
RV-Specific Notes: Height clearance on Portuguese motorways and major roads is generally generous (4m or more); no significant restrictions on the core national road network. Historic town centres (Sintra, Óbidos, Évora, Alfama) are not navigable and should not be attempted; use peripheral parking throughout.
Legal Notes
Blood alcohol limit: 0.5g/L (0.05%); reduced to 0.2g/L for drivers with less than one year's experience. Penalties range from fines to licence suspension and, for higher readings, criminal prosecution.
Mobile phone use while driving: Prohibited without hands-free equipment; fines apply.
Seatbelts: Mandatory for all occupants in all seats.
Compulsory equipment: Warning triangle and high-visibility vest required in the vehicle, one per occupant.
RV rental: €600–1,600 (varies by vehicle size and season; July and August add 20–30% across all categories; book 3–4 months ahead to lock in lower rates)
Fuel: €160–300 (diesel approximately €1.75/litre; typical weekly distance 700–900km divided by 10L/100km = 70–90 litres)
LPG/Autogas: €20–45 (if a mid-trip refill is needed; fill in Lisbon before departure into the Alentejo interior where GPL availability drops)
Tolls: €40–110 (Via Verde electronic tolls on the A2, A6, and A16; Ponte 25 de Abril and Ponte Vasco da Gama crossings each carry a toll of a few euros; accumulated charges on a full Alentejo and Algarve circuit reach €80-100 without careful routing)
Campgrounds: €140–350 (€20-50/night x 7; áreas de serviço at the low end €5-15/night with limited or no hookups; full-hookup Algarve and Cascais-area sites at the high end)
Food: €200–500 (self-catering from Pingo Doce or Continente approximately €35-40/day; mixed cooking and dining out approximately €65-75/day; a Cervejaria Ramiro or Belcanto splurge night €80-260+ per person)
Activities: €50–200 (Sintra combined palace ticket approximately €25-45/adult; Chapel of Bones and Évora Roman Temple modest individual fees; Nazaré and Cabo da Roca free; Belém monuments approximately €10-15/adult each)
Parking: €0–50 (áreas de serviço and campsite parking as above; Lisbon city centre parking not practical for campervans due to narrow historic streets; use Monsanto or peripheral surface areas with public transport into the centre)
Total estimates:
Budget: approximately €1,200 — Compact vehicle, all self-catering, áreas de serviço and lower-cost campsites, free attractions (Cabo da Roca, Alfama, Arrábida beaches, Belém monument exteriors)
Mid-range: approximately €2,000 — Mid-size vehicle, mix of cooking and restaurant meals including Time Out Market and one seafood dinner, mid-price campgrounds with hookups, Sintra palace tickets and the Chapel of Bones included
Premium: approximately €3,400+ — Larger motorhome, frequent dining including Belcanto and Cervejaria Ramiro, full-hookup sites throughout, all major Sintra, Belém, and Évora attraction entries, wine tastings in the Alentejo
Portugal, and Lisbon specifically, sits at the lower-to-mid range of the Indie Campers European network for overall trip costs, reflecting both the country's status as Indie Campers' home market with deep fleet availability and Portugal's generally lower cost of living relative to France, Switzerland, or Scandinavia. The biggest cost variable is how much of the trip is spent in the Algarve during peak July and August season, when campsite rates and rental prices both climb 20 to 30% above the shoulder-season baseline; a circuit weighted toward the Alentejo coast and interior instead offers meaningfully better value at the same time of year.
Lisbon to Porto (approximately 310km via A1, approximately 3 hours) — The natural north-south Portugal one-way. Pick up in Lisbon; cover Sintra, Óbidos, Nazaré, and Aveiro; drop in Porto. Fly home from Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), Portugal's second-largest international hub. Allow 7 to 10 days for a full Silver Coast itinerary before the Porto drop.
Lisbon to Faro (approximately 280km via A2, approximately 2 hours 45 minutes) — The most natural southbound one-way. Pick up in Lisbon; cover the Arrábida, the Alentejo coast, Évora, and the western Algarve; drop in Faro. Faro Airport connects to a broad range of UK and European destinations, particularly strong during the northern European summer season. Allow 7 to 10 days for a comprehensive Alentejo and Algarve itinerary.
Lisbon to Madrid (approximately 630km via A6 and A5 Spain, approximately 6 hours) — The cross-border one-way east. Lisbon pickup; Évora and the Alentejo interior; cross into Spain at Badajoz; continue via Mérida (Roman ruins) and Trujillo to Madrid. Confirm cross-border rental terms at indiecampers.com before booking.
Lisbon to Alicante (approximately 850km via A6/A5 Spain, N-roads, and A31/A7, approximately 9 hours) — A long one-way crossing the full width of the Iberian Peninsula, connecting the Portuguese Atlantic coast to the Spanish Mediterranean via the Alentejo, Extremadura, and Andalusia's interior. Confirm cross-border terms and one-way fee at indiecampers.com.
One-way pricing and availability vary by route and season. Book Sintra palace tickets and any Alentejo coast campsites simultaneously with the vehicle reservation for any July or August departure. Confirm all cross-border logistics at indiecampers.com before finalising the booking.
Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS, GPS 38.7813°N, 9.1359°W) sits just 7km north of the Lisbon city centre, making it one of the most centrally located major airports in Europe. Direct connections run from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton, Manchester, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid, and a comprehensive transatlantic network via TAP Air Portugal, easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, and United. For UK travellers, TAP and British Airways run multiple daily Heathrow-Lisbon frequencies at around 2 hours 40 minutes flight time. A campervan collected near the airport can be on the A16 toward Sintra within 20 minutes, or crossing the Ponte Vasco da Gama toward the Alentejo within 25 minutes.
For travellers arriving by train, Lisboa Oriente station (GPS 38.7678°N, 9.0987°W) and Santa Apolónia (GPS 38.7139°N, 9.1219°W) connect to Porto (Alfa Pendular, approximately 2 hours 40 minutes), Faro (approximately 3 hours), and, via the international Sud Express, to Madrid, Irun, and onward into France. Road trippers arriving by rail from Porto or the Algarve and collecting a campervan at the Lisbon depot are positioned to head in any direction: north to Sintra and the Silver Coast, south across the river to the Alentejo and Algarve, or east toward the Spanish border and Madrid.
For travellers arriving by sea, Lisbon's cruise terminal at Santa Apolónia and the Jardim do Tabaco (GPS 38.7089°N, 9.1225°W) receives Atlantic and Mediterranean sailings; a growing number of travellers combine a transatlantic or Mediterranean cruise leg with an onward campervan circuit collected directly from the Lisbon waterfront.
