With unlimited mileage and flexible drop-off options including Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Cairns gives you the freedom to explore tropical Australia down the coast without backtracking.

Local Tips for Cairns
  • Daintree National Park (110km north, 1h 30min to ferry)
World Heritage site. World's oldest tropical rainforest (180 million years, predates Amazon by 10 million years). Contains 30% of Australia's frog species, 65% of bat/butterfly species, 18% of bird species—in just 0.1% of Australia's landmass. Cassowaries (endangered, ~1,200 left), tree kangaroos, crocodiles, pythons. Cape Tribulation where rainforest meets reef. Entry free (ferry $32 return). Roads sealed to Cape Trib but narrow. 4WD tracks continue to Cooktown (not for standard RVs).
  • Wooroonooran National Park (60-90km south)
Queensland's wettest area (8,000mm annual rainfall in parts). Josephine Falls (20km swimming cascade, popular), Babinda Boulders (swimming holes, Indigenous significance). Warning: Currents at Babinda Boulders have caused deaths—follow signs strictly. Walking tracks, rainforest walks. Free entry.
  • Barron Gorge National Park (25km northwest)
Barron Falls (spectacular wet season, trickle dry season), Barron Gorge itself (dramatic), walking tracks. Accessed via Kuranda Scenic Railway or Skyrail. Free entry (transport costs extra).
  • Atherton Tablelands (60-120km west, highland plateau)
Cooler climate (600-900m elevation), volcanic crater lakes, waterfalls, coffee plantations, dairy farms. Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine (swimming crater lakes), Millaa Millaa Falls circuit, wildlife spotting (platypus, tree kangaroos). Network of scenic drives.
  • Captain Cook Highway (Cairns to Port Douglas, 67km)
One of Australia's most scenic coastal drives. Reef views on right, rainforest mountains on left. Beaches: Trinity, Clifton, Palm Cove, Ellis Beach. Allow 90 min with stops.
  • Palmerston Highway (Innisfail to Millaa Millaa, 60km inland)
Rainforest drive, less trafficked than Atherton routes. Wallaman Falls detour (268m—Australia's tallest single-drop waterfall, 50km off highway, rough road last section).

Why Rent an RV in Cairns

Cairns' location in Tropical North Queensland gives you access to rainforest, reef, and coastal landscapes that exist nowhere else. Here's what you can reach:

  • Great Barrier Reef - Boat access from Cairns Marina (1 hour to outer reef sites), Green Island (27km offshore, 45-min boat, $90 return), Fitzroy Island (29km, 45-min boat, $79 return). Snorkeling, diving, glass-bottom boats. World's largest reef system, 2,900 individual reefs.
  • Daintree Rainforest - (110km north, 1h 30min via Captain Cook Hwy to Daintree River ferry) Oldest rainforest on Earth (180 million years), twice as old as Amazon. Cassowaries, tree kangaroos, crocodiles. Cable ferry crosses Daintree River ($32 return per vehicle).
  • Cape Tribulation - (140km north, 2h 30min) Where rainforest literally meets reef—ancient trees grow to the beach edge. Remote beaches, hiking, crocodile-spotted rivers. 4WD track continues north to Cooktown (not recommended for standard RVs).
  • Port Douglas - (67km north, 1 hour via Captain Cook Hwy) Upscale beach town, Four Mile Beach, Sunday markets, reef tour operators, restaurants. Less humid than Cairns.
  • Atherton Tablelands - (80km west, 1h 15min via Gillies or Kuranda Range) Highland plateau (600-900m elevation), cooler temps, crater lakes (Lake Eacham, Lake Barrine), waterfalls (Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie Falls), coffee plantations, wildlife spotting.
  • Mission Beach - (140km south, 1h 45min via Bruce Hwy) Cassowary Coast, 14km beach, rainforest backdrop, Dunk Island access. Highest density of cassowaries in Australia.
  • Townsville - (347km south, 4 hours via Bruce Hwy) Gateway to Magnetic Island, Reef HQ Aquarium, further south toward Whitsundays.

The roads are good. Captain Cook Highway (Cairns to Port Douglas) is one of Australia's most scenic coastal drives—reef on one side, rainforest mountains on the other. Bruce Highway (Highway 1) is the main north-south artery—mostly good condition but can flood during wet season. Kuranda Range and Gillies Highway to Atherton Tablelands are winding mountain roads with spectacular views.

Why Choose Indie Campers in Cairns

Here's what sets us apart:

  • Unlimited mileage – Explore all of Tropical North Queensland, drive to Brisbane (1,700km), or circumnavigate the entire coast without distance caps. Many Australian competitors limit you to 100-150km per day (barely covers Cairns to Daintree).
  • Flexible drop-off locations – Pick up in Cairns, drop off in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, or anywhere along Australia's east coast.
  • Kitchen kits included – Full cooking equipment comes standard. Cooking saves hundreds over a week.
  • 24/7 roadside assistance – Across Australia in English and multiple languages.
  • Tropical-ready vehicles – Air conditioning (essential in Cairns), functioning fridges (35°C days require cold storage), tested in tropical humidity.

What's the Best Time to Rent an RV in Cairns?

Dry season (April-November) is best. Cairns has distinct wet and dry seasons. Dry season offers lower humidity, no cyclones, clearer reef visibility, and accessible roads.

Dry Season (April to November)

Temperatures: 21-29°C, low humidity
Rainfall: Minimal (30-70mm/month)
Peak tourist season. Perfect beach weather, clear skies, excellent reef visibility (20-30m). All roads accessible. Waterfalls are less dramatic (lower water flow) but swimming holes are safe. No marine stingers in southern beaches (though reef tours provide stinger suits year-round). Cassowaries active. Atherton Tablelands at their greenest early dry season (April-June). Expect higher prices and more tourists June-August. Book reef tours and accommodations 2-3 weeks ahead mid-year.

April-May: Shoulder season, waterfalls still flowing from wet season, fewer tourists, 15-20% lower prices.

June-August: Peak season (Australian winter—southerners escape to tropical warmth). Busiest months. Highest prices. Perfect weather (23-26°C, low humidity). Book everything ahead.

September-November: Shoulder season, warming up toward wet season (humidity increases Nov), excellent value, fewer crowds, still great conditions.

Best for: Beach activities, reef tours (best visibility), hiking, waterfalls (safe to swim), road trips (all roads open), wildlife spotting, festivals.

Wet Season (December to March)

Temperatures: 24-32°C, high humidity (70-85%)
Rainfall: Heavy (200-600mm/month), peak Jan-Feb
Cyclone season: Dec-Apr (highest risk Jan-Mar)
Off-season pricing (30-50% less). Dramatic thunderstorms, lush green landscapes, massive waterfalls, fewer tourists. Roads can flood—Bruce Highway north of Cairns occasionally cut for days. Some tracks to Cape Tribulation and Daintree become impassable. Reef visibility reduced (runoff from rain). Marine stingers (box jellyfish) in coastal waters Oct-May—swimming at beaches unsafe without stinger suit. High humidity makes heat feel oppressive (feels like 35-40°C). Cyclone risk—monitor weather closely, follow warnings.

December: Transition month, increasing rain, stinger season begins, prices drop.

January-February: Wettest months, highest cyclone risk, cheapest prices, dramatic weather, not ideal for RV touring.

March: Transitioning to dry season, rain decreasing, still humid, shoulder season pricing.

Best for: Budget travelers, dramatic landscapes, photographers (storm light), locals (southerners avoid wet season), those who don't mind humidity/rain. Not recommended for first-time Cairns visitors.

Most popular months: July, August, September (70% of annual visitors).

  • Valid driver's license (international license required for non-English licenses)
  • Credit card for bond

Booking

  • Book 4-8 weeks ahead for dry season (June-September peak)
  • Prices 30-40% lower wet season (Dec-Mar) but weather risks

What's Included

  • Unlimited mileage
  • Kitchen kit (pots, pans, utensils, plates)
  • Basic insurance (CDW)
  • Camping equipment
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Bedding
  • Free second driver

Tropical-Specific Checks

  • Air conditioning works properly (essential)
  • Fridge functions at tropical temps (check seals)
  • All windows have fly screens (mosquitoes/insects)
  • Ask about wet season restrictions if traveling Dec-Mar

Speed Limits

  • Highways: 100-110 mph
  • Bruce Highway: 100 mph most sections
  • Captain Cook Highway: 100 mph (80 mph winding sections)
  • Urban areas: 50 mph
  • School zones: 40 mph (school days, posted times)

Police enforcement is strict. Fixed and mobile speed cameras. Fines $180-2,000 depending on speed.

Road Conditions

Sealed roads: Bruce Highway, Captain Cook Highway, major routes are good condition.

Winding mountain roads: Kuranda Range, Gillies Highway, Palmerston Highway—steep, tight corners, slow down (60-70 mph sections). Take it easy in RVs.

Wet season hazards: Flooding common Jan-Mar. Bruce Highway north can close. NEVER drive through flooded roads (water depth deceptive, current strong).

Wildlife: Cassowaries, wallabies, snakes crossing roads. Drive cautiously dawn/dusk.

Ferry Crossings

Daintree River Ferry: $32 return per vehicle (pay both ways). 5-minute crossing. Runs 6am-midnight (limited service midnight-6am). Queues dry season peak times (allow 30-min wait). Cable ferry (holds ~15 vehicles).

No other essential ferries on typical Cairns routes (optional island ferries separate).

Distances & Fuel

Cairns to Port Douglas: 67km = 1 hour
Cairns to Daintree Ferry: 110km = 1h 30min
Cairns to Cape Tribulation: 140km = 2h 30min (narrow winding road last 30km)
Cairns to Mission Beach: 140km = 1h 45min
Cairns to Townsville: 347km = 4 hours
Cairns to Atherton: 85km = 1h 15min

Fuel widely available on main routes. Cape Trib has no fuel (fill at Mossman). Tablelands have regular stations.

RV-Specific

Height: Know your height (typically 2.7-3.2m). Some car park barriers in Cairns are low (2.1m). Check before entering.

Width: Roads are generally adequate. Daintree roads narrower (take it slow, use pullouts).

Parking: Cairns Esplanade has RV parking. Most destinations have RV-friendly parking. Port Douglas village is tight (use campground, walk in).

Camping restrictions: Free camping restricted in Cairns region (council regulations). Use designated campgrounds. Crocodile danger also makes wild camping unsafe near water.

Alcohol Limit

0.05% BAC. Fines $600+, license suspension. Random breath testing common. Don't drink and drive.

Practical Logistics for Tropical North Queensland

Crocodile Safety

Critical: Estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles inhabit ALL waterways north of Rockhampton. Cairns is prime crocodile habitat.

Rules:

  • Never swim in rivers, creeks, or beaches north of Daintree River
  • Stay 5+ meters from water's edge (crocs can lunge from water)
  • Never camp at water's edge
  • Never clean fish near water's edge
  • Warning signs = guaranteed crocodiles present (signs are for rare areas that are sometimes safe; assume crocs everywhere else)

Safe swimming:

  • Cairns Esplanade Lagoon (stinger/croc-safe pool)
  • Reef tours (outer reef is safe)
  • Atherton Tablelands lakes/waterfalls (elevation = no crocs)
  • Port Douglas Four Mile Beach (stinger nets dry season, but stinger suits recommended)

Crocodile attacks are rare but fatal. Respect warnings.

Marine Stingers (Box Jellyfish)

October to May: Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) season. Potentially fatal sting. Inhabit coastal waters Cairns to Cape York.

Rules:

  • Do not swim at beaches without stinger nets Oct-May
  • Wear stinger suit if swimming (lycra full-body suit, $30-50 to buy, often free at reef tours)
  • Stinger nets protect some beaches (Port Douglas, Palm Cove) but not 100% effective
  • Outer reef is generally safe (stingers prefer shallow coastal waters)

Vinegar stations at beaches (first aid for stings—apply liberally while calling 000).

Most tourists swim at:

  • Esplanade Lagoon (stinger-free)
  • Hotel pools
  • Reef tours (provide stinger suits)
  • Atherton Tablelands (freshwater, no stingers)

Cyclones

November to April is cyclone season (peak January-March). Tropical cyclones bring:

  • Winds 150-280 mph
  • Torrential rain (200-500mm in 24 hours)
  • Flooding
  • Road closures (Bruce Highway north can be cut for days)

If traveling wet season:

  • Monitor Bureau of Meteorology (bom.gov.au) daily
  • Have flexible plans
  • Know evacuation routes
  • Follow emergency service instructions
  • Some campgrounds close wet season (check ahead)

Blue Alerts = cyclone watch (48-72 hours)
Red Alerts = cyclone imminent (evacuate if instructed)

Heat & Humidity

Dry season: 24-29°C, 50-70% humidity (comfortable)
Wet season: 24-32°C, 70-85% humidity (oppressive, feels like 35-40°C)

Tips:

  • Air conditioning in RV is essential (confirm before renting)
  • Drink 3-4L water per day (dehydration happens fast)
  • Morning activities (afternoons are hottest)
  • Fridge must work properly (food spoils quickly in tropics)
  • Mold prevention (keep RV ventilated, dry towels completely)

Wildlife Beyond Crocs

  • Cassowaries: Endangered flightless bird (1.5-1.8m tall), Mission Beach/Daintree area. Do not approach—they can disembowel with claws if threatened. Give 10m space. Never feed. Road signs warning of cassowary crossings—drive slowly.
  • Snakes: Coastal taipan, death adder, pythons. Stay on paths, check before reaching into spaces, wear closed shoes in bush.
  • Spiders: Funnel-webs (rare this far north), redbacks. Check shoes before putting on.
  • Stonefish: Venomous fish on reef/shore. Wear reef shoes when wading.

Estimated Cost for a Week-Long RV Rental in Cairns

RV rental: $700-1,400 AUD (dry season peak, lower wet season)
Fuel: $280-420 AUD (diesel $1.95-2.15/L, 600-800km typical week, 12-15L/100km = 72-120L)
Campgrounds: $280-490 AUD ($40-70/night × 7)
Food: $250-500 AUD (groceries vs restaurants; restaurants $25-45/person)
Activities: $300-600 AUD (Great Barrier Reef tour $200-280, Skyrail $110, Daintree Discovery $38, misc entries)
Daintree Ferry: $32 AUD (if visiting Daintree)

Total estimates:

  • Budget: $1,900 AUD (smaller RV, cook meals, free activities like waterfalls/beaches)
  • Mid-range: $2,700 AUD (mid-size RV, one reef tour, mix cooking/restaurants)
  • Premium: $4,000 AUD (large RV, multiple tours, frequent dining out, full-service campgrounds)

Cairns is moderately expensive, reef tours and tropical location = higher costs than southern Australia.

One-Way RV Rentals from Cairns

Pablo J.

“Everything was great, an unforgettable experience.”

Luke J.

“Couldn’t recommend indie campers any more. Pick up was a breeze, the van was clean and everything was clearly explained. The van performed flawlessly throughout our trip, giving us no issues. Drop off was just as easy, Tiana was great, very polite and asking us how our trip was! Overall, I would go with indie campers again in a heartbeat!”

Jamie S.

“We hired the pick-up truck with roof top tent for 6 and half weeks to travel from Cairns to Sydney. Both the collection from the Cairns depot and drop off at the Sydney depot was easy and the staff were really welcoming and helpful. The vehicle itself we cannot fault, it was so easy to drive as well as the set up of the tent, we hired 3 different styles of vehicles to sleep in whilst in Australia and this was definitely our favourite.”
