Our Road Trips Itineraries
The Netherlands has no motorway toll for standard passenger vehicles or campervans (aside from a small number of specific tunnel tolls, covered below), and its motorway network is dense and well-signed, meaning a campervan lets you cover a lot of the country's contrast, dunes, polders, forest, medieval towns, in a short window without racking up fuel costs the way a bigger country would. Distances here are genuinely short: Amsterdam to the German border is under two hours, and Amsterdam to the Belgian border is about the same.
A vehicle you can also sleep and cook in also solves a real accommodation gap. Amsterdam's hotel stock is tight and pricey year-round, while a serviced campsite or camperplaats twenty to thirty minutes outside the city runs a fraction of the cost and removes the parking headache that comes with driving a larger vehicle into the historic canal ring.
The Netherlands rewards slow travel in a way its size doesn't advertise. The Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Wadden Sea islands, and the Zeeland Delta are all built around walking, cycling, and birdwatching rather than driving through, so a campervan that lets you park up for two or three nights in one place, rather than commuting from a distant hotel, changes how you experience them.
Spring (April-May): 8-16°C, Keukenhof's tulip gardens near Lisse open late March through mid-May (roughly 40 km/40 min from Amsterdam), the country's single biggest seasonal draw. Best for tulip season and quieter cities; book campsites near Lisse well ahead if visiting in peak bloom (April).
Summer (June-August): 17-22°C, peak season nationwide. Coast and Wadden Islands busiest, Amsterdam hotel and campsite prices highest. Best for beach days and island ferries; skip if you want a quiet Amsterdam. Book coastal camperplaatsen and campsites a month ahead for July-August.
Autumn (September-October): 10-16°C easing to 8-12°C, rain increases through October. Veluwe heather blooms into September, forest colours peak in October. Best for the Veluwe and fewer crowds nationwide.
Winter (November-March): 2-7°C, grey and often windy, occasional ice on canals. Amsterdam's light festival runs December-January. Many smaller coastal and island campsites close for the season. Best for a short city-focused stop; skip if extensive camping is the plan.
Most popular months: May through September, with April's tulip season a distinct secondary peak and July-August the busiest overall.
7 to 10 days: Day 1: pick up in Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans windmills, overnight nearby. Day 2: Amsterdam canal ring and museums. Day 3: Utrecht (45 km, 40 min). Day 4: Rotterdam (~55 km from Utrecht), Cube Houses and Markthal. Day 5: The Hague and Scheveningen beach (~25 km from Rotterdam). Day 6: Middelburg and the Delta Works (~130 km from The Hague). Day 7: Hoge Veluwe National Park (~180 km from Middelburg, plan this as a longer transfer day or reroute). Days 8-10 (extending): Friesland lakes or a Texel day trip from Den Helder.
14 to 16 days: Add a proper two-night Wadden Islands stay (ferry to Texel or Terschelling) and extend into Limburg for a Maastricht and Vaalserberg detour, giving the trip a genuine north-to-south arc.
21+ days: The Netherlands becomes a hub for a longer European trip. Week one: Amsterdam, the Randstad, and Zeeland. Week two: the Veluwe, Friesland, and the Wadden Islands at a slower pace. Week three: a one-way cross-border leg into Belgium, Germany, or France instead of looping back to Amsterdam.
Licence and age: a full licence held at least a year is standard; drivers under 23-25 may face a young-driver surcharge. Non-EU holders should carry an International Driving Permit.
Speed limits: motorways are capped at 100 km/h during the day (06:00-19:00), a nationwide environmental measure now permanent in Dutch law, rising to 120-130 km/h at night (19:00-06:00) on stretches specifically signed for it. Rural roads run 80 km/h, town centres 50 km/h down to 30 km/h in designated zones. Enforcement is heavy via fixed and average-speed (trajectcontrole) cameras.
Toll roads: no general motorway toll for passenger vehicles or campervans. A small number of specific crossings do charge a toll, notably the Westerscheldetunnel in Zeeland and the Kiltunnel near Dordrecht; carry a card or check for an automatic number-plate billing option in advance.
Netherlands-specific rules: trams and cyclists have extensive priority in cities, especially Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Rotterdam, and right-hand cycle lanes require careful checking before turning. Several cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague, run milieuzones (environmental/low-emission zones) restricting older diesel vehicles; check current requirements for your specific hire before entering any city centre.
Campervan-specific rules: overnight parking in city-centre public lots is generally not intended for motorhomes; use a campsite or a designated camperplaats instead. Several historic town centres, including parts of Amsterdam and Utrecht's canal ring, restrict general vehicle access; park at the edge and walk or cycle in.
BAC limit: 0.5 g/L (0.05%) for standard licence holders, dropping to 0.2 g/L (0.02%) for novice drivers (holding a licence less than 5 years), enforced through routine and targeted checkpoints, with fines and potential licence suspension for violations.
7-day trip: Vehicle hire: €490-910. Fuel (diesel ~€2.05-2.20/L, ~600-800 km given the country's compact size): €80-125. Campsites/camperplaatsen (6 nights, €20-40/night): €120-240. Food and groceries: €150-280. Attractions (Kröller-Müller Museum, Delta Works tour, a Wadden ferry crossing): €70-140.
Budget total: ~€910. Mid-range total: ~€1,340. Premium total: ~€1,700.
14-day trip: Vehicle hire: €980-1,820. Fuel (~1,100-1,500 km): €160-250. Campsites/camperplaatsen (12 nights): €260-460. Food and groceries: €300-550. Attractions: €140-260.
Budget total: ~€1,840. Mid-range total: ~€2,660. Premium total: ~€3,340.
The Netherlands has exactly one Indie Campers depot, in Amsterdam, so there is no domestic one-way route: you can't pick up in Amsterdam and drop off in Rotterdam or Maastricht, since neither has a depot. Any loop within the Netherlands returns to Amsterdam.
International one-way, from Amsterdam only:
For most travelers, a special licence is not necessary to hire a campervan in The Netherlands. A valid driving licence is required, though, to operate any of our vehicles. If you are a non-EU citizen, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required in addition to your home country’s driving licence. Additionally, your licence must match the transmission type of the vehicle (manual or automatic). You can find more details about driving licence requirements here.
Yes, our campervans are pet-friendly. Just be sure to add the extra cleaning service when booking. This ensures a professional anti-allergy cleaning is carried out after your trip. Please note that only one pet is allowed per campervan, and it must not exceed 30kg in weight. Also, we are not liable for any legal fees related to traveling with pets. If you’re booking through our marketplace, check the “vehicle rules” section to confirm if the vehicle is pet-friendly.
The sleeping capacity of our campervans and motorhomes varies depending on the model and size. Our Class C motorhomes can typically accommodate 4 to 8 people, while our Class B campervans can sleep between 2 to 4 people.
