Our Road Trips Itineraries
The argument for an RV over any other transport option in the Northeast comes down to what you're actually trying to see. The Adirondacks have 2,000 miles of hiking trails and the campground system is the only way to access the back country. Acadia's best campsites are in the park, not in Bar Harbor hotels. Cape Cod's kettle ponds and Province Lands are a day away from any beachfront motel. An RV puts you inside the landscapes rather than at their edges.
New York's transport connections are the best in the US: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports between them offer direct routes from every major market in the world. JFK is 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, roughly 30-50 minutes by car depending on traffic. LaGuardia is 8 miles from Midtown, 20-35 minutes. Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey is 16 miles from Midtown via the Lincoln Tunnel. All three put you within reach of the Indie Campers New York depot within an hour of landing.
New York State has tolls on nearly every major highway leaving the city. The MTA bridges and tunnels, the New York State Thruway (I-87, I-90), the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey, and the New Jersey Turnpike all charge tolls, and most have moved to cashless all-electronic tolling. The E-ZPass transponder covers New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and 15 other states. Set it up before you drive a single mile out of the metro.
Every booking includes unlimited mileage, 24/7 road assistance, and a Basic Protection Plan as standard. An Adirondacks loop from New York covers 600 miles. A full Northeast run to Acadia and back pushes past 1,400 miles. Adding Shenandoah on a southbound one-way to Washington D.C. or beyond adds another 700 miles. None of it carries a per-mile cap.
One-way hires are available from New York to all active Indie Campers US centres. The Atlantic coast run south to Miami, the Appalachian corridor to Nashville and Atlanta, and the westbound route to Chicago and Denver are all available as clean one-way departures. No retracing, no return driving. Confirm availability and pricing at booking.
Spring (April to May) is the window most people overlook. The crowds that define a July weekend in the Catskills or on Cape Cod simply aren't there in April. The Hudson Valley apple orchards bloom in late April. Wildflowers cover the Shenandoah ridgeline in May. The temperatures are 10-18°C in New York, cooler in the Adirondacks and Maine. Acadia is at its least crowded and most atmospheric in early May, with the spring peeper frogs audible from every wetland. Book campgrounds ahead but not months in advance; availability is much more forgiving than in summer.
Summer (June to August) is full stride for the Northeast. Temperatures in New York City run 26-32°C in July and August, making the mountains and the coast the obvious escape routes. The Catskills fill with New Yorkers every summer weekend from late June; Acadia, Cape Cod, and the Adirondacks are at their busiest in July and August. Book campgrounds 4-6 months ahead for summer weekends on Recreation.gov and reserveamerica.com. The US Open runs from late August into early September at Flushing Meadows. July 4th in New York is Macy's fireworks over the Hudson and the East River simultaneously.
Fall (September to October) is the strongest season and the one most experienced Northeast travellers plan around. Foliage in the Adirondacks peaks in late September; the Catskills and Hudson Valley peak in mid to late October; the White Mountains of New Hampshire (a natural extension of a New England loop) peak in late September. The light in October across the Hudson Valley is exceptional. Acadia in fall, with summer crowds gone and the deciduous trees on the hillsides turning, is the best version of the park. Book fall campground weekends well ahead; leaf-peeping season fills the Northeast campground system fast.

A full New England loop with the best mountain hiking and fall colour in the Northeast.
Fuel Stations
Average regular unleaded price in New York: $3.50-$4.20/gallon. New York State has among the highest fuel taxes in the US; New Jersey fuel runs $0.20-0.40/gallon cheaper than New York State on the same day, and Connecticut falls between the two.
Minimum driver age for Indie Campers vehicles is 21. A valid driver's licence is required for all drivers; international visitors must carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home country licence. A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pick-up for the security deposit.
The America the Beautiful Annual Pass at $80 covers entrance fees at Acadia, Shenandoah, Cape Cod National Seashore, and all other NPS fee sites. If your trip includes Acadia plus any other park, the pass pays for itself immediately.
Set up E-ZPass before pick-up. This is non-negotiable for Northeast driving. The New York metro toll network is extensive and entirely cashless; driving without E-ZPass means mail invoices, elevated Tolls-by-Mail rates, and administrative follow-up after the trip. Register at e-zpass.com and add your vehicle and payment method before you leave for the depot.
Book Acadia timed entry permits (Park Loop Road and Cadillac Mountain) through Recreation.gov well in advance for any summer date. Book New York State campgrounds (North-South Lake, Meadowbrook, etc.) through reserveamerica.com; popular Catskills sites fill weeks ahead for summer weekends.
Speed Limits
Enforcement: New York State Police active on all interstates. New York City has the most extensive automated speed camera network in the United States, with cameras in every school zone active 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. First offence $50, second offence $75, third offence $150 in a rolling 12-month period per camera location. Connecticut State Police are known for strict enforcement on I-95. Massachusetts uses automated tolling cameras on the Mass Pike (I-90).
Road Conditions
New York → Boston (350km, 4 hours via I-95 through Connecticut) — The most natural short one-way in the Northeast. Through New Haven, Providence, and into Boston. The I-95 Connecticut corridor is the most congested stretch; leave early morning or midday.
New York → Miami (2,000km, allow 3-4 days via I-95 south) — The complete Atlantic seaboard south. Savannah and Charleston are the strongest overnight stops. Continuous coastal access the entire route.
New York → Nashville (1,450km, allow 2-3 days via I-81 south through Virginia) — Shenandoah National Park runs alongside I-81 through the Shenandoah Valley; one night inside the park breaks the drive naturally.
New York → Chicago (1,270km, allow 2 days via I-80 west or I-90 through Buffalo and Cleveland) — Niagara Falls is a natural overnight detour off I-90 in western New York before continuing west.
No American city puts you within range of more concentrated history, more accessible wilderness, and more distinct regional culture simultaneously. The Catskills are 90 miles north. Acadia is 330 miles northeast. Shenandoah is 340 miles southwest. The entire eastern seaboard stretches 2,000 miles south to Miami without leaving the Indie Campers network.
The city itself is the best possible starting point because it's the hardest possible starting point. Navigating a campervan out of New York requires competence, preparation, and a good routing app. Once you've done it, every subsequent RV trip in your life feels straightforward by comparison.
Two days in New York before departure. A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in the morning. Katz's for a pastrami sandwich at lunch. The High Line in the afternoon. Pick up the RV the next morning, cross the GWB northbound, and drive until the city is behind you and the Catskill ridgeline is ahead.

New York + Cape Cod + Boston (1,100km, 7-8 days)
New York → Providence, RI (280km, 1 night) → Cape Cod/Nickerson State Park (120km, 2 nights) → Provincetown day (50km) → Plymouth (85km, Mayflower II and Plimoth Patuxent) → Boston (60km, 1-2 nights: Freedom Trail, Fenway Park) → return via I-95 south (350km). The full New England coastal run.
14+ Days
The Full Northeast Loop (3,000km+, 14-16 days)
New York → Hudson Valley (1 day) → Catskills/North-South Lake (2 nights) → Albany → Adirondacks/Lake Placid (2 nights) → Burlington, VT (1 night) → White Mountains, NH: Crawford Notch, Mount Washington Auto Road (2 nights) → Portland, ME (1 night) → Acadia National Park/Blackwoods Campground (2 nights) → Portsmouth, NH (1 night) → Boston (1 night) → Cape Cod (2 nights) → Providence → New York return. The complete Northeast circuit.
New York to Miami One-Way: The Atlantic Coast Route (2,000km, 10-12 days)
New York → Philadelphia (150km, 1 night: Liberty Bell, Reading Terminal Market) → Baltimore (160km, half day: Inner Harbour, crab cakes at LP Steamers) → Washington D.C. (60km, 1-2 nights: Mall, Smithsonian) → Shenandoah/Skyline Drive (160km, 1 night) → Richmond, VA (170km) → Outer Banks, NC via US-64 (350km, 1-2 nights: Cape Hatteras National Seashore) → Wilmington, NC (140km) → Myrtle Beach, SC (90km) → Charleston, SC (100km, 1 night) → Savannah, GA (170km, 1 night) → Jacksonville → Miami drop-off (510km). The full Atlantic seaboard as a linear route.
Most travellers find 7-9 days ideal for a Catskills and Adirondacks loop or a New England coastal run to Cape Cod and back. Acadia deserves two nights minimum; arriving and leaving the same day defeats the purpose.
Regional fuel notes:
Propane Refill Stations
Propane notes: Propane powers your fridge, stove, and onboard heating. In the Northeast, this includes heating; Adirondack nights in September and October regularly drop into the 30s°F, and Acadia in May can see overnight lows in the 20s. A typical tank holds 20-30 gallons and costs $70-135 to fill from empty at current New York rates. No propane refill options inside Acadia National Park or the Adirondack High Peaks interior. Fill in Bangor or Ellsworth, ME before driving to Acadia. Fill in Lake Placid before entering the Adirondack backcountry.
Dump Stations
Most New York State campgrounds include dump stations for registered campers; non-guest use $10-15, verify by calling ahead

New York → Montreal (600km, allow 1 day via I-87 north through the Adirondacks) — The Adirondacks run the length of I-87 northbound. Cross at the Champlain border crossing into Quebec.
