Christchurch gives you access to both coasts, the Southern Alps, the north of the island, and Fiordland without committing to a direction on day one. From Queenstown you're effectively in one corner of the island. From Christchurch you can go four directions and stay on sealed roads. That's the main geographic argument for starting here.
The South Island's best experiences are also specifically campervan-suited. Milford Sound is better experienced by sleeping at the fiord overnight — arriving before the tour buses at 6 a.m. is worth the logistics. Aoraki/Mount Cook's dark skies require staying inside the park, not driving back to a hotel in Twizel. The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are a two-hour stop, not a destination in themselves. A campervan removes the constant calculation between accommodation location and attraction access.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Christchurch rental companies:
Unlimited mileage — Drive to Milford Sound, up the West Coast, and back through Mount Cook without watching a kilometer counter. Most competitors cap daily mileage at 200–250 km. Indie Campers doesn't cap at all.
One-way rentals across 70+ locations — Pick up in Christchurch, drop off in Queenstown or Auckland. New Zealand's shape makes one-way travel the logical choice — the best routes don't loop back to where they started.
24/7 road assistance — Included on every booking. Remote South Island roads are not the place to be without support.
Basic Protection Plan included — Covered from day one, with optional upgrades at booking.
Flexible cancellation — Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.
Book now, pay later — Secure your vehicle today; full payment isn't due until closer to departure.
Every campervan traveler in New Zealand needs to understand this before booking. As of December 7, 2024, all rental vehicles must be certified self-contained under the SCVS 2024 standard, identified by a green warrant sticker , the older blue sticker is no longer valid for freedom camping. Self-contained vehicles must have a fixed or plumbed-in toilet; portable toilets no longer qualify.
For finding legal freedom camping spots, download CamperMate, WikiCamps NZ, or the Rankers Camping app before leaving the city. Cell coverage in parts of Fiordland and the West Coast is limited. Our guide toessential camping apps for road trips covers the most useful tools for South Island travel.
Summer (December to February) — 18–25°C (64–77°F). Longest days, full park access, peak wildflower season in the Mackenzie Basin. Campgrounds fill quickly — book 2–3 months ahead for Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, and Milford Sound. Best for first-time visitors who want reliable weather. Skip if you hate booking everything in advance.
Autumn (March to May) — 10–20°C (50–68°F). Crowds thin after Easter. Beech forests in Fiordland and Arthur's Pass turn gold in April. Walk-in campsites become available. The Milford Road and most South Island routes stay fully open. Best for travelers who want space and good light. The best-value season on the South Island.
Winter (June to August) — 2–12°C (36–54°F). Mount Hutt ski field (90 min from Christchurch) and Coronet Peak (30 min from Queenstown) are operating from mid-June. See Indie Campers' dedicated South Island ski trip by campervan itinerary for how to plan this. The Milford Road can close for avalanche control — check journeys.nzta.govt.nz before heading to Fiordland. Best for skiers and budget travelers.
Spring (September to November) — 8–18°C (46–64°F). Mackenzie Basin lupins peak late October into November — one of the most photographed landscapes in New Zealand and still relatively uncrowded. Campgrounds are quiet and prices are lower than summer. West Coast rainfall is heavy in spring — allow flexibility if your route includes Franz Josef.
The most popular months for Christchurch campervan rentals are December, January, and February.
Christchurch → Queenstown (approx. 490 km, 5.5 hrs via inland route) — The most popular one-way on the South Island. Drive south via Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo, or west via Arthur's Pass and the West Coast for a longer approach. Drop off in Queenstown and fly home from Queenstown Airport (ZQN).
Christchurch → Auckland (approx. 1,200 km by road plus Interislander ferry) — The full New Zealand one-way. Complete the South Island, cross from Picton to Wellington by ferry, then continue north to Auckland. Book ferry vehicle space before passenger cabins — it sells out first in peak season.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability at booking. Explore all South Island and North Island rental options to build your full route.
Getting from the Airport — Christchurch International Airport (CHC) is 10 minutes from the depot at 189 Blenheim Road, Riccarton. Taxi from the terminal: approx. NZ$25–35. Uber is available at CHC. Confirm shuttle arrangements with Indie Campers at booking.
Driving — New Zealand drives on the left. Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on open roads. Many South Island roads are two-lane and winding — budget 20–30% more travel time than a car on the same route. Check road closures at journeys.nzta.govt.nz before remote drives.
Fuel — No fuel at Milford Sound (fill in Te Anau, 120 km east), at Aoraki/Mount Cook (fill in Twizel or Lake Tekapo), or inside Arthur's Pass (fill in Springfield). Average South Island fuel prices: NZ$2.40–2.80/litre for 91 octane.
Tolls — No tolls on most South Island roads. The main toll roads are on the North Island. If your one-way route takes you to Auckland, pay electronically at nzta.govt.nz/roads-and-rail/toll-roads.
Minimum age: 21 for most vehicles. A young driver surcharge applies under 25.
Driver's license: Full valid license required. Non-English-speaking country visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home license.
DOC bookings: Book popular campgrounds (Mount Cook, Milford Sound, Tekapo) as early as possible at doc.govt.nz. They fill months ahead in summer.
Interislander ferry: Book vehicle space at interislander.co.nz well ahead of travel. December and January vehicle spaces sell out faster than passenger tickets.
For most travelers, a special licence is not necessary to hire a campervan in Christchurch. A valid driving licence is required, though, to operate any of our vehicles. If you are a non-EU citizen, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required in addition to your home country’s driving licence. Additionally, your licence must match the transmission type of the vehicle (manual or automatic). You can find more details about driving licence requirements here.
Yes, our campervans are pet-friendly. Just be sure to add the extra cleaning service when booking. This ensures a professional anti-allergy cleaning is carried out after your trip. Please note that only one pet is allowed per campervan, and it must not exceed 30kg in weight. Also, we are not liable for any legal fees related to traveling with pets. If you’re booking through our marketplace, check the “vehicle rules” section to confirm if the vehicle is pet-friendly.

If you're exploring Christchurch in a campervan rental, it's essential to be aware of the country’s official camping regulations. Many natural areas are legally protected, so using designated overnight parking spots or official campsites is strongly recommended. This not only helps preserve the environment but also ensures a safe and enjoyable experience. For more guidance on safety and responsible camping, click here.
We provide three different protection plans to cover any incidents or damages that might occur during your campervan rental. All Indie Campers campervans come with third-party vehicle insurance, and property damage coverage (which varies based on the country).
