New Zealand’s North Island adventure starts in Auckland , the country’s largest and most cosmopolitan city. Known as the “City of Sails,” Auckland blends urban energy with easy access to natural wonders. Surrounded by volcanic cones, sparkling harbours, and rugged coastlines, it's a gateway to both culture and adventure. You’ll find top-rated restaurants, historic Maori landmarks, and beaches all within a short drive from the city centre.

The Northland region, stretching towards the northernmost tip of the country, offers a deeper connection to Aotearoa’s roots. With fewer crowds and plenty of campervan-friendly sites, Northland is ideal for detours into natural beauty. Don’t miss a scenic drive to Cape Reinga, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, stop for sand surfing on the giant dunes of Te Paki or take a refreshing sunrise swim at Waiake Beach, a tranquil local gem near Auckland.

From the subtropical Bay of Islands to the remote charm of the far north, this first stretch of the journey sets the tone for an unforgettable road trip through New Zealand’s North Island.

Follow the Pacific coast road to the Coromandel Peninsula, a region known for its laid-back charm, rugged landscapes and postcard-perfect beaches. Loved by locals and visitors alike, this stretch of New Zealand’s North Island is the very definition of a beach-lover’s paradise. The Coromandel is where winding roads give way to dense native bush, hidden coves and towering cliffs above turquoise waters.

After soaking in the beach vibes of the Coromandel Peninsula, head south-west to the rolling green hills and underground wonders of the Hamilton and Waitomo region. Known for its dramatic limestone landscapes and rich cultural experiences, this area offers a striking contrast to the coast.

Start with Hamilton, the largest city in the Waikato region, known for its beautiful botanic gardens, vibrant student scene, and riverside walks. It's a great place to stock up on supplies, grab something to eat, or take a stroll along the Waikato River before heading into the wilder parts of the region.

Just an hour away lies Waitomo, a small village with a big reputation. This area is world-famous for its glowworm caves, ancient subterranean systems where thousands of glowworms light up the darkness like stars.

Leaving the lush countryside of Waitomo behind, your road trip now winds towards the central North Island to Rotorua, one of New Zealand’s most vibrant and culturally rich destinations. Known for its bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers, and strong Māori heritage, Rotorua is an immersive experience in geothermal wonder and traditional storytelling. Here, you can soak in natural hot springs, attend a powerful haka performance, and walk through redwood forests scented with sulphur and steam.

The city’s volcanic activity is central to both its geography and its culture, with experiences like Te Puia, where you’ll see the iconic Pohutu Geyser erupt and learn about Māori carving and weaving. Nearby, the lakes district offers tranquil spots for kayaking and picnics.

Just over an hour’s drive away, a detour to Mount Maunganui brings you back to the coast and into the laid-back surf lifestyle of the Bay of Plenty. Climb to the summit of “The Mount” for panoramic views of golden beaches, then treat yourself to brunch in town or relax in the saltwater hot pools. This is the perfect mix of geothermal thrill and ocean escape.

Welcome to the heart of New Zealand’s volcanic plateau, where dramatic landscapes, crystal-clear lakes, and epic hikes take centre stage. This leg of the journey blends the calming beauty of Lake Taupō with the rugged, cinematic terrain of Tongariro National Park, a dual destination that’s packed with both serenity and adrenaline.

With its mix of cultural history, geothermal activity, and outdoor thrills, this region is a highlight for any North Island itinerary, offering some of the best hiking, scenery, and stargazing in the country.

Taranaki is one of New Zealand’s most captivating regions, where raw coastal wilderness meets volcanic majesty. Stretching along the wild western coastline of the North Island, it’s famous for its sweeping black-sand beaches, dramatic cliffs and striking rock formations sculpted by the Tasman Sea. At its heart is Mount Taranaki, a near-perfect volcanic cone dominating the skyline and offering endless opportunities for hiking, climbing and exploring the lush surrounding forests. The region is a haven for surfers chasing powerful waves, adventurers drawn to its walking tracks and road-trippers looking for untamed beauty. With a unique blend of rugged landscapes, outdoor adventure and iconic natural landmarks, Taranaki captures the essence of New Zealand’s wild spirit.
