Our Road Trips Itineraries
Amsterdam's central location in the Netherlands gives you access to diverse landscapes despite the country's small size. Here's what you can reach:
The roads are excellent. A-motorways (snelwegen) are modern and efficient. N-roads through countryside show you polders (reclaimed land below sea level), canals, farms, and windmills. Completely flat terrain—easy driving for first-timers.
Here's what sets us apart:
April through October is ideal. April-May (tulip season) and September-October are especially popular—you get iconic spring flowers or autumn colours without peak summer crowds.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 8-17°C
Tulip season: Late March to mid-May, peaking mid-April. Keukenhof gardens open exclusively during this period (check exact dates annually—typically March 20-May 10). Flower fields along Bollenstreek route create carpets of colour. This is THE season for Dutch countryside photography. Weather is unpredictable—frequent rain and wind. Bring waterproofs. Easter brings some crowds.
Best for: Tulip tourists, garden visits, avoiding summer crowds, spring countryside, photography, flower auctions in Aalsmeer.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 17-23°C
Peak season. Amsterdam gets very crowded—museums have long queues, canal tours book out. Longer days (sunset around 10pm in June) mean extended exploring. Beach towns (Zandvoort, Scheveningen) are packed on sunny weekends. Weather is comfortable but unpredictable—pack layers. July-August are warmest and busiest. Book campgrounds 2-3 weeks ahead.
Best for: Beach trips, cycling routes, outdoor festivals, canal exploring, long daylight hours, camping with kids, North Sea islands.
Fall (September to November)
Temperatures: 12-18°C (September), cooling to 5-10°C (November)
Shoulder season. September is excellent—still warm, fewer tourists, lower prices. October brings autumn colours to forests (Hoge Veluwe, Amsterdamse Bos). Frequent rain increases through November. Days shorten quickly—dark by 5pm in November. Museums and indoor attractions become more appealing.
Best for: City exploration without crowds, cycling through autumn landscapes, museum visits, lower campground prices (30-40% less), wine/harvest experiences in Belgian regions nearby.
Winter (December to February)
Temperatures: 2-7°C
Lowest hire prices (40-50% off). Amsterdam Christmas markets (December), ice skating (if canals freeze, rare but magical). Many coastal campgrounds close. Days are short (dark by 4:30pm). Cold, wet weather—not ideal for RV touring. Museums and indoor activities are the draw.
Best for: Budget travellers, Christmas markets, museum-focused trips, New Year's celebrations, cosy Dutch café culture.
Most popular months: April (tulips), May, July, August, September.

Fuel Stations
Average diesel price: €1.55-1.70/litre (motorway services €0.10 more)
Important: Netherlands has some of Europe's highest fuel prices. Consider filling up in Belgium or Germany if crossing borders (€0.15-0.25/litre cheaper).
Dump Stations
Most campgrounds in Netherlands allow non-guests to use dump stations for €4-7.
Helpful Apps
Speed Limits
Digital speed limit signs (variable) are common. Obey them—cameras everywhere. Fines €30-380 depending on speed.
Cyclists Everywhere
Bike lanes (fietspaden): Red-paved lanes are for bikes only. Do not drive, park, or walk in them.
Right of way: Cyclists often have priority at intersections (white shark teeth markings). Always check blind spots before turning.
Urban cycling: Amsterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem have thousands of cyclists. Drive cautiously, expect the unexpected.
Narrow Streets & Canals
Amsterdam centre: Streets designed for horses and carts, not RVs. Many are one-way, narrow, with canal barriers. Seriously—do not attempt RV driving in historic centres.
Villages: Even small villages have narrow passages. Drive slowly, fold mirrors if needed.
Alcohol Limit
0.05% BAC (0.02% for drivers under 5 years licensed). Fines start at €350 + possible licence suspension.
RV-Specific
Height: Know your vehicle height (2.7-3.2m typical). Amsterdam has many height barriers in parking garages and some streets (2.1m common).
Parking: Blue zones = paid (ticket machine or app). Expensive in cities. Yellow = no parking. White = free (rare in cities).
Wild camping: Officially prohibited in Netherlands. Tolerated overnight at some designated spots (check Park4Night). Beaches, dunes, and nature areas strictly prohibit it—fines €150-400. Better to use campgrounds (abundant and affordable).
Low bridges: Some historic bridges and passages are low. Watch for height signs.
Trams: Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht have trams. Do not block tracks. Trams always have right of way.
Parking in Amsterdam
Important: Amsterdam city centre is NOT RV-friendly. Narrow streets, canals, height barriers, extremely expensive parking (€5-7.50/hour). DO NOT drive your RV into central Amsterdam.
Best strategy: Park at campground outside city, use excellent public transport.
If you must park near city:
Parking P+R (Park & Ride) Locations:
Regular parking: €5-7.50/hour in city. €60-90/day. Height barriers common.
Towing/fines: Amsterdam enforces parking strictly. Illegal parking = €100+ fine or towing (€500+).
Public Transport in Amsterdam
OV-chipkaart: Rechargeable public transport card. €7.50 card + load credit. Works on trams, buses, metros, trains. Available at stations, GVB offices, some shops.
Single tickets: €3.20 (1 hour unlimited transfers), €8.50 (day pass), €17 (2-day pass). Buy from drivers (cash) or ticket machines.
Best for campground access:
Cycling in Amsterdam
Bikes everywhere: Amsterdam has 880,000 people and 880,000+ bikes. Cyclists have right of way in bike lanes (fietspaden). DO NOT stop or walk in red-paved bike lanes, you'll be yelled at or run over.
Driving rules:
Hire bikes: Most campgrounds hire bikes (€8-12/day). Much better way to explore Amsterdam than driving.
RV hire: €700-1,400 (varies by vehicle/season)
Fuel: €220-350 (diesel €1.55-1.70/L, Netherlands has high fuel prices, 600-800km typical)
Campgrounds: €210-350 (€30-50/night × 7)
Food: €175-350 (groceries vs restaurants, eating out is expensive)
Attractions: €100-200 (museums €15-25 each, Keukenhof €20-32)
Parking/Transit: €20-50 (P+R + public transport if visiting Amsterdam by RV)
