Our Road Trips Itineraries
Belgium charges no motorway toll for passenger vehicles or campervans under 3.5 tonnes, full stop, a genuine cost advantage over France's péage network or Switzerland's mandatory vignette. For a trip likely to cross at least one border, that toll-free stretch inside Belgium adds up fast.
A campervan also solves Belgium's accommodation maths better than most people expect: Bruges and Ghent hotel rooms in the old town run high for small rooms with no parking, while a serviced campsite twenty minutes out costs a fraction of that. In the Ardennes, where villages like Bouillon have limited hotel stock in summer, a self-contained vehicle removes that dependency entirely.
The country's compactness is the third argument. Brussels sits roughly at the geographic centre, so a coastal day, a Bruges or Ghent day, and an Ardennes day fit inside one week without excessive driving. Belgium borders four countries within a two-and-a-half hour drive of Brussels, turning a small country into a springboard for a much bigger trip.
Spring (April-May): 10-16°C, rain spread across weeks, Bruges/Ghent quieter than summer. Ardennes stays cooler and wetter longer. Best for city trips and lower campsite prices; skip if set on beach time.
Summer (June-August): 20-24°C, peak season nationwide. Coast busiest, Tomorrowland (late July, Boom, ~45 km from Brussels) congests the E19 and books out Ardennes/Antwerp campsites weeks ahead. Best for coastal days; skip if you want quiet Bruges/Ghent. Book coastal campsites a month ahead.
Autumn (September-October): 12-18°C easing to 8-12°C, rain picks up in October. Ardennes foliage peaks in October; Brussels Comic Strip Festival runs in September. Best for foliage and crowd-free cities.
Winter (November-March): 2-7°C, damp and grey. Brussels' Winterpret Christmas market runs through December. Many smaller Ardennes/coastal campsites close for the season. Best for a short Brussels Christmas-market stop; skip if you need extensive camping.
Most popular months: June through September, with July-August peak and May/September the better-value shoulder.
7 to 10 days:
Day 1: pick up in Brussels, Grand Place and Atomium, overnight near Grimbergen. Day 2: Ghent (55 km, 40 min). Day 3: Bruges (~45 km from Ghent). Day 4: Antwerp (~90 km from Bruges), register for its LEZ. Day 5: Dinant (~160 km from Antwerp), Citadel and Meuse riverside. Day 6: La Roche-en-Ardenne or Durbuy. Day 7: Bouillon, castle and Semois viewpoints. Days 8-10 (extending): Bastogne, or a day into Luxembourg's Mullerthal.
14 to 16 days: Add two full coast days (Ostend/De Haan, using the Kusttram) and a proper two-night Martelange stay to cover both Bastogne and the Mullerthal without rushing.
21+ days: Belgium becomes a hub. Week one: Flemish cities and coast. Week two: Ardennes and Luxembourg border at a slow pace. Week three: a one-way cross-border leg (Amsterdam, Paris, or Cologne) instead of looping back.
Licence and age: a full licence held at least a year is standard; drivers under 23-25 may face a young-driver surcharge. Non-EU holders should carry an International Driving Permit.
Speed limits: motorways 120 km/h, regional roads 90 km/h (lower through the Ardennes), town centres 50 km/h down to 30 km/h in designated zones. Enforcement is active via fixed and mobile radar.
Toll roads: no motorway toll for standard passenger vehicles or campervans under 3.5 tonnes, a real saving versus France's péage or Switzerland's vignette. The kilometre charge applies only to trucks over 3.5 tonnes.
Belgium-specific rules: priorité à droite (voorrang van rechts), priority to the right, is Belgium's defining rule at unmarked intersections; it catches the most foreign drivers. LEZ zones cover Brussels (entire region, all 19 communes, camera-enforced, register at lez.brussels before entering, even if compliant), Antwerp, and Ghent separately; a Brussels registration doesn't cover the other two.
Campervan-specific rules: overnight parking in city-centre public lots is generally not permitted for larger vehicles; use a campsite or designated motorhome area instead.
BAC limit: 0.5 g/L (0.05%) for standard licence holders, enforced via routine and targeted checkpoints, with fines and potential licence suspension for violations.
7-day trip: Vehicle hire: €490-910. Fuel (diesel ~€1.90-2.05/L, ~700-900 km): €90-140. Campsites (6 nights, €20-35/night): €120-210. Food and groceries: €150-280. Attractions (Bruges canal boat, Dinant Citadel, Bastogne museum): €60-120.
Budget total: ~€910. Mid-range total: ~€1,340. Premium total: ~€1,660.
14-day trip: Vehicle hire (14 nights): €980-1,820. Fuel (~1,400-1,800 km): €190-290. Campsites (12 nights): €240-420. Food and groceries: €300-550. Attractions: €120-220.
Budget total: ~€1,830. Mid-range total: ~€2,650. Premium total: ~€3,300.
Belgium has exactly one Indie Campers depot, in Brussels, so there is no domestic one-way route: you can't pick up in Brussels and drop off in Bruges, Ghent, or Antwerp, since none of those cities has a depot. Any loop within Belgium returns to Brussels.
International one-way, from Brussels only:
For most travelers, a special licence is not necessary to hire a campervan in Belgium. A valid driving licence is required, though, to operate any of our vehicles. If you are a non-EU citizen, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required in addition to your home country’s driving licence. Additionally, your licence must match the transmission type of the vehicle (manual or automatic). You can find more details about driving licence requirements here.
Yes, our campervans are pet-friendly. Just be sure to add the extra cleaning service when booking. This ensures a professional anti-allergy cleaning is carried out after your trip. Please note that only one pet is allowed per campervan, and it must not exceed 30kg in weight. Also, we are not liable for any legal fees related to traveling with pets. If you’re booking through our marketplace, check the “vehicle rules” section to confirm if the vehicle is pet-friendly.
The sleeping capacity of our campervans and motorhomes varies depending on the model and size. Our Class C motorhomes can typically accommodate 4 to 8 people, while our Class B campervans can sleep between 2 to 4 people. Vehicles equipped with a rooftop tent generally have space for around 2 people. For a full breakdown of our models and sleeping capacities, click here.
If you're exploring Belgium in a campervan rental, it's essential to be aware of the country’s official camping regulations. Many natural areas are legally protected, so using designated overnight parking spots or official campsites is strongly recommended. This not only helps preserve the environment but also ensures a safe and enjoyable experience. For more guidance on safety and responsible camping, click here.
