Additionally, your licence must match the transmission type of the vehicle (manual or automatic). You can find more details about driving licence requirements here.

If you’re booking through our marketplace, check the “vehicle rules” section to confirm if the vehicle is pet-friendly.

Campervan and Motorhome Hire in Tenerife

Tenerife is a 2,034 km² volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean, 300 miles west of the Moroccan coast and 1,300 miles southwest of mainland Spain. It holds the highest peak on Spanish territory (Mount Teide, 3,715 metres), the oldest living tree in the Canary Islands (the Drago Milenario at Icod de los Vinos, estimated 800-1,000 years old), and one of the last surviving Tertiary laurel forests on the planet (the Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). The island is 100 miles long and 60 miles wide at its broadest point; a vehicle can cross it from coast to coast in under 90 minutes. Despite its compact size, Tenerife contains seven distinct climatic zones on a single mountain, from the arid volcanic desert at the Teide crater to the wet moss-covered ridge forest of Anaga 55 miles northeast.

The TF-1 motorway runs 70 miles along the south coast from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Los Cristianos; the TF-5 runs 60 miles along the north coast to Puerto de la Cruz and Garachico; the TF-21 climbs inland from La Orotava to the Teide park entrance at El Portillo (2,200 metres altitude, 55 miles from Santa Cruz, 1 hour). From the Santa Cruz depot, a 7-day island circuit reaches: Anaga Rural Park (18 miles, 25 minutes), La Laguna (9 miles, 15 minutes), Puerto de la Cruz (35 miles, 35 minutes), Teide crater (55 miles, 1 hour), Los Gigantes cliffs (95 miles, 1 hour 10 minutes), and El Médano beach (65 miles, 45 minutes) without exceeding 100 miles on any given day.

What to do in Tenerife

Top Natural Parks and Scenic Drives in Tenerife

Teide National Park - El Portillo Visitor Centre: 55 miles southwest of Santa Cruz via the TF-21, approximately 1 hour. Teide National Park covers 18,990 hectares in the centre of the island, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. It is the most visited national park in Europe by annual footfall, receiving 3-4 million visitors per year, and the third most visited national park in the world. The park occupies the Las Cañadas caldera, a volcanic depression 16 miles in diameter and 2,000-2,200 metres above sea level, ringed by a 200-metre escarpment of ancient volcanic crater walls. The floor of the caldera is a volcanic desert of compacted pumice, lava formations, and high-altitude plant species found nowhere else on earth. Teide itself rises a further 1,500 metres from the caldera floor to 3,715 metres at the summit.
Anaga Rural Park - Cruz del Carmen: 18 miles northeast of Santa Cruz via the TF-12, approximately 25 minutes. The Anaga massif occupies the northeastern tip of Tenerife, a 50-mile-long volcanic spine of ridges and deep ravines covered in laurisilva forest. This is not a secondary natural park; it is one of the last intact Tertiary-period laurel forests in the world, a forest type that covered much of Southern Europe and North Africa 20 million years ago, then contracted to a handful of Atlantic island refugia as the climate dried. The Anaga laurisilva contains 11 species of laurel-related trees (Laurus azorica, Persea indica, Apollonias barbujana, Ocotea foetens among them), 900-year-old tree heathers (Erica arborea) 15 metres tall, and mosses and ferns covering every surface to such density that the canopy blocks most direct sunlight at ridge level. UNESCO designated Anaga a Biosphere Reserve in 2015.
The North Coast: Puerto de la Cruz, Garachico, and Icod de los Vinos - Puerto de la Cruz: 35 miles northwest of Santa Cruz via the TF-5, approximately 35 minutes. The north coast of Tenerife sits below the cloud inversion layer for 60-80 days per year, giving it a wetter, greener character than the south. The banana plantations that cover the coastal terraces from Los Realejos to Icod de los Vinos produce the Plátano de Canarias (PDO, the Canary Islands banana, smaller, sweeter, and more aromatic than the Cavendish variety imported from Central America; the Canary Islands export 300,000 tonnes per year to the Spanish mainland, where it holds a 70% market share over imported banana).
The West Coast: Los Gigantes, Masca, and the Teno Massif - Los Gigantes: 95 miles southwest of Santa Cruz via the TF-1 and TF-47, approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. The western coast of Tenerife is defined by the Teno massif, the oldest volcanic formation on the island (approximately 7 million years old), a deeply eroded basalt block that forms the island's western shoulder. The Los Gigantes cliffs are the exposed sea face of this massif: 300-600 metres of vertical and overhanging black basalt rising directly from the Atlantic, the tallest sea cliffs in Spain. The Masca ravine cuts into the massif from the village at 650 metres altitude to the sea over 5 miles, the most walked trail in the Canary Islands.
The South Coast: Playa de El Médano, Las Galletas, and the East Coast - El Médano: 65 miles south of Santa Cruz via the TF-1, approximately 45 minutes. The south coast of Tenerife receives fewer than 200mm of rain per year. The landscape between the TF-1 motorway and the sea is arid: black volcanic gravel, sparse tabaiba scrub (Euphorbia regis-jubae, a small succulent endemic to the Canary Islands), and the Montana Roja volcanic cone (GPS: 28.0284° N, 16.5390° W, a 171-metre-tall red scoria cone on the shoreline east of El Médano, accessible on a free 45-minute circular trail, GPS at trailhead: 28.0267° N, 16.5336° W). The resort corridor from Playa de las Américas to Los Cristianos is the most densely developed part of the island; the campervan traveller is better served by basing between El Médano and Las Galletas, where the coast retains its original volcanic character.
La Laguna and the Colonial Heritage - La Laguna: 9 miles northwest of Santa Cruz via the TF-5, approximately 15 minutes. San Cristóbal de La Laguna is the former capital of the Canary Islands and a UNESCO World Heritage City (1999). The original city grid (laid out in 1496 by Alonso de Lugo on an unfortified plain, the first Spanish colonial planned city without defensive walls) became the urban template for the colonial cities of the Americas: the same grid pattern and the same spatial relationship between the main square, the cathedral, and the administrative buildings reappeared in Santo Domingo (1498), Havana (1519), and Lima (1535).

Why Hire a Campervan in Tenerife

Tenerife's geography creates a routing problem that only a campervan solves efficiently. The Teide caldera, the Anaga laurisilva forest, the northwest fishing villages, and the south coast coves are all within 80 to 120 miles of Santa Cruz, but they sit in four climatically distinct zones that no hotel base covers in a single day. A campervan parked overnight on the Las Cañadas plateau puts you at the Mirador de las Narices del Teide for sunrise before the coach groups arrive from the coast. A night at the Anaga peninsula base gives you the laurisilva trails at 7:00 in morning mist before the day-trippers reach the trailhead. Neither is replicable from a Los Cristianos resort room.

The circuit that makes the clearest case for a campervan from Tenerife is the full north-south loop: pick up near Reina Sofía Airport (TFS) in the south, drive the TF-21 through the Teide plateau to La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz (95 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes), continue east to La Laguna and the Anaga peninsula (40 miles, 45 minutes), then return south on the TF-1 motorway (75 miles, 55 minutes). Roughly 210 miles in a loop passing a UNESCO World Heritage volcano, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve forest, a UNESCO old town, and the Atlantic-facing villages of the northwest coast. The hotel-based equivalent requires three different resort areas and three separate check-ins. The campervan version requires one booking.

Why Choose Indie Campers in Tenerife

Here is what sets Indie Campers apart from other Tenerife hire companies:

Unlimited mileage: Drive the full island circuit (400+ miles for the complete perimeter loop via TF-1 south, west coast, TF-5 north, and Teide interior) without watching a daily counter. Most Tenerife campervan competitors cap at 200-300 miles per day; Indie Campers does not cap at all.

Island-wide coverage with no dead ends: Pick up in Tenerife and drive every road the island offers: the TF-21 to the Teide caldera at 2,200 metres, the TF-5 along the north coast banana terraces, the TF-12 ridge road into the Anaga laurel forest, and the south coast TF-1 motorway. The only road not recommended for campervans over 5.5 metres is the TF-436 to Masca village; every other road on the island is accessible.

24/7 roadside assistance: Included on every booking. If something fails on the TF-21 above 2,000 metres near the Teide cable car station or on the TF-12 ridge road in the Anaga after dark, there is a number to call.

Basic Protection Plan included: Covered from day one. Additional protection upgrades are available at booking and worth considering for the high-altitude TF-21 driving and the north coast mountain roads above 1,000 metres.

Flexible cancellation available: Cancel up to 31 days before pickup without penalty.

Best Time to Hire a Campervan in Tenerife

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures at sea level: 18-22°C (64-72°F); Teide summit: -5 to 5°C (23-41°F)

Tenerife's peak tourist season is winter, driven by northern European visitors escaping cold and darkness at home. The south coast (Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, El Médano) is reliably sunny and warm at 20-22°C; the north coast (Puerto de la Cruz) is frequently cloudy with mild temperatures. The Teide summit receives snow from December through February in most years; the TF-21 closes temporarily during and immediately after snowfall events and reopens within 24-48 hours once the road is cleared. Snowfall on Teide visible from the south coast is the most photographed Canary Islands image.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Carnaval de Santa Cruz, February; the largest street carnival in Spain and one of the largest in the world after Rio de Janeiro, with 200,000+ people in the main parade and the burial of the sardine event closing the festival on Ash Wednesday): If collecting the vehicle during Carnival week, road access around Santa Cruz is severely restricted on the main procession evenings (Friday and Saturday of Carnival weekend from 6:00 p.m.); confirm depot access route is clear before driving.

Best for: South coast sunshine, Carnival (February), Teide snow photographs from the coast, whale watching year-round, uncrowded Anaga trails.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures at sea level: 19-24°C (66-75°F)

Spring is the best all-round season for a Tenerife campervan circuit. The Teide broom (Spartocytisus supranubius) blooms pink and white across the caldera floor from April through May, carpeting the 16 km-wide volcanic depression in colour visible from the TF-21. Sea temperature peaks for spring at 19-20°C by May. Easter week (Semana Santa) in La Laguna: the oldest Holy Week procession in the Canary Islands, with carved Renaissance floats (pasos) from the 16th and 17th centuries processed through the UNESCO historic centre. The Romería de San Marcos (April 25, Tegueste and Icod de los Vinos): traditional Canarian rural pilgrimage with ox carts, folk costumes, and gofio and wine distributed on the road.

Where to Refuel and Refill Near Tenerife

Fuel Stations

Canary Islands fuel pricing: Fuel in Tenerife is cheaper than mainland Spain due to the IGIC (Impuesto General Indirecto Canario, 7% vs 21% VAT on the mainland): approximately €1.20-1.40/litre diesel, €1.25-1.45/litre petrol.
Before ascending Teide (TF-21): Fill in La Orotava (north approach) or Vilaflor; no fuel inside the national park.

A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pickup. The security deposit is held on the credit card at pickup; the amount varies by vehicle class and selected protection plan. Confirm the exact deposit amount during the booking process.

Island-Specific Considerations
All hires in Tenerife are circular; vehicles are returned to the Tenerife depot. There are no road connections to other Indie Campers depots. Inter-island ferry transport (La Gomera, Gran Canaria, La Palma) may or may not be covered in your hire agreement; confirm with Indie Campers before booking any ferry crossing with the hire vehicle.

Why Start Your Campervan Trip in Tenerife

Tenerife is a self-contained campervan destination, not a transit hub. Unlike mainland Spain depots, the case for Tenerife is not about geographic centrality or one-way routing across a continent; it is about the density of distinct environments within a 100 miles x 60 miles island, the year-round mild climate, and the ease of a circular route that requires no retracing.

First, the range of terrain on a single island: a 7-day circuit from the Santa Cruz pick up centre covers an ancient laurel forest (Anaga, 18 miles away), a 3,715-metre volcanic peak with its own desert ecosystem (Teide, 55 miles away), 300-600-metre sea cliffs above a cetacean migration corridor (Los Gigantes, 95 miles away), a colonial UNESCO city (La Laguna, 9 miles away), and an Atlantic wind beach with international surf events (El Médano, 65 miles away). No mainland depot covers that range of landscape in the same distance.

Second, the climate: Tenerife's southern coast receives 3,000+ hours of sunshine per year, the highest in Spain. The annual average temperature at sea level is 22°C; there is no month with an average high below 19°C. This means the island is viable for campervan hire in every month of the year, with no weather-forced closures of major routes. The Teide summit road (TF-21) closes only during snow events, which are infrequent and short; the south coast is sunny and warm regardless of what the north coast cloud is doing.

Third, airport connectivity: Tenerife South Airport (TFS, GPS: 28.0447° N, 16.5725° W) receives direct flights from 120+ European cities and is one of the top 10 busiest airports in Spain by annual passenger volume. UK connections are the strongest in the network, with year-round services from 30+ British airports; German connections from
