Campervan Rental Zurich

Zurich, a multifaceted city on the lake. It is only an hour away from the famous Swiss Alps. From the historic buildings of the old town to the cafés along the Limmat and the famous Bahnhofstrasse with its luxury shops, Zurich has plenty to offer. Climb to the top of the Grossmünster cathedral, take a boat trip on the lake and relax in the Lindenhof park overlooking the old town, and finally taste the famous Swiss chocolate in one of the many chocolate shops in the city, such as Sprüngli, before setting off to explore the rest of Switzerland.

Getting to Zurich

Located on the shores of Lake Zurich, the city is in northern Switzerland. It is easily accessible by road thanks to various motorways: the A1, which crosses Switzerland from east to west, from Geneva to St. Gallen, the A3 between Basel and Chur, and the A4, which connects the north of the country with Ticino. The city's main railway station offers direct access to the center of Zurich. It runs numerous connections both within Switzerland and to European cities such as Berlin, Vienna, and Milan in just a few hours. Zurich-Kloten International Airport is the point of entry for many visitors. Swiss and easyJet offer a wide range of destinations around the world. The journey from the airport to the city center takes about 15 minutes, whether by car or by train.

Parking in Zurich

Once you arrive in Zurich, parking spaces along the street are rather scarce and limited in the amount of time you may leave your car (2-4 hours). The hourly rate is between £1.50 and £3.50 (2-4 CHF), payable at the parking meter or by credit card through the Parkingpay app. The city offers underground car parks, but certain cars and motorhome rental in Zurich may need to be aware of height restrictions, with rates similar to street car parks. Parkhaus Hauptbahnhof and Hohe Promenade are the most centrally located, about £32 (40CHF) per day.

Beware of fines for not keeping to the indicated parking times, as the city is very strict about this. The cheapest and easiest solution is to park in the Park+ride, the ones in Zurich Tiefenbrunnen and Glattbrugg are very convenient. The daily rates vary between £6 (8 CHF) and £16 (20 CHF). They are located near a train station with direct and fast connections to the city center.

Annual events in Zurich

  • Zurich Carnival (March): Between music, fancy dress, and fun, discover swiss traditions at this annual carnival.
  • Street Parade (August): This is the event of the summer for electro fans. Several stages and numerous floats will have you dancing along the edge of the lake.
  • Zürcher Theater Spektakel (August to September): In a magical setting, you can experience all forms of art from dance to singing to the theater for all ages.
  • Illuminaritum (November): In November, explore Zurich as it is illuminated by thousands of lights.

Please note that it is best to book in advance, especially during the high season (July-August).

  • Zurich Fischer's Fritz campsite: A little paradise on the outskirts of Zurich with direct access to the lake, for £28 to £40 (35-50 CHF) per night.
  • Vitznau campsite: Overlooking the Waldstätten lake, is the ideal starting point for exploring the region, costing between £20 and £40 (25-50 CHF) per night.
  • Walenstadt campsite: Nestled between the lake and the mountains, it is located 80km from Zurich in the direction of the Alps, for a lower cost between £16-24 (25-35 CHF) per night.

The best time to rent a RV in Zurich

Weather graph for average temperatures in Zurich
Average temperatures in Zurich per month

Zürich, like the rest of Switzerland, has a wide range of climates throughout the year. With rather warm and sunny summers, between 15-23°C but sometimes exceeding 30°C, it is the perfect place to enjoy water activities, or come during the autumn period, which offers magnificent orange harvest colors while the weather remains dry. Harsh and snowy winters, with temperatures rarely exceeding 5°C, allow you to discover the snowy slopes of Hoch-Ybrig or Flumserberg, only one hour from Zürich. Spring brings the city and its vegetation back to life, especially on Bertastrasse where you can see the trees in bloom, or along the lake on the Seepromenade. The weather is quite mild, 5 to 15°C depending on the day, and precipitation is scarce.

The summer months are the busiest time of the year for visitors to Zurich, and this is also when prices are at their highest. The large number of events taking place during this period, and its direct proximity to the lake, making RV rental in Zurich in the summer season particularly attractive. For a more intimate discovery of Zurich, the months of May, June, and September seem to be a good compromise, combining nicer weather and fewer tourists. It is also the best time to rent a campervan in Zurich.
