Our Road Trips Itineraries
Denver's position at the foot of the Rockies and within striking distance of the Colorado Plateau makes it one of the best RV departure points in the interior US. Here's what you can reach:
Here's what sets us apart:
June-September is ideal. Colorado's mountain climate means most high-altitude parks and scenic drives are only fully accessible in summer, with June-August offering the best combination of open roads, wildflowers, and warm temperatures. July-September sells out fastest—book campgrounds and RVs 3-5 months ahead for these months. September is consistently the most popular single month for Denver RV rentals: aspen fall colors peak, elk rut begins in Rocky Mountain National Park, crowds drop after Labor Day, and all mountain roads are still open. Spring and fall offer excellent shoulder season value.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 41-64°F at Denver elevation, colder in mountains
Rainfall: Moderate (1.2-2 inches/month), snow possible at altitude
Shoulder season with excellent value and gradually opening landscapes. Lower elevations (Denver, Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods, Great Sand Dunes) accessible and beautiful—wildflowers in the San Luis Valley, sandhill cranes at Monte Vista wildlife refuge (March-April). Mountain passes and high-altitude parks still partially closed: Trail Ridge Road opens late May, Tioga-equivalent routes in Rocky Mountain NP closed until late May-early June, Independence Pass closed until late May. Colorado Springs and the Front Range accessible and uncrowded. Easter and Memorial Day weekends see price increases. Telluride Bluegrass Festival (Telluride, mid-June) signals the start of summer festival season.
Best for: Colorado Springs, Great Sand Dunes, Black Canyon of the Gunnison (south rim open year-round), lower elevation hikes, budget-friendly pricing, avoiding summer crowds.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 77-90°F at Denver, 59-72°F at altitude

What's Included
Seasonal Considerations
Speed Limits
Colorado State Patrol (CSP) active. Speeding tickets $100-500+. Construction zone fines doubled. Photo radar used in some mountain towns (Georgetown, Idaho Springs).
Road Conditions
Excellent: I-25, I-70 plains sections, US-85 well-maintained year-round.
Seasonal challenges: I-70 mountain corridor (closures for storms, accidents, Glenwood Canyon rockfalls/flooding), Independence Pass (closed November-May, no RVs over 30ft), Million Dollar Highway (narrow, steep, no guardrails, demands full concentration)
Mountain grades: Steep descents on multiple I-70 exits (Eisenhower Tunnel east approach, Vail Pass eastbound). Use low gear—engine braking preferred over riding brakes. Runaway truck ramps present on major grades.
Driving Culture
Lane discipline: Colorado drivers generally courteous on rural roads, more aggressive in Denver metro. Right lane for slower traffic.
Wildlife crossings: Watch for deer, elk, and pronghorn crossing, especially on US-285, US-36, and mountain highways at dawn and dusk. Elk can weigh 1,000 pounds—collisions are serious.
RV rental: $850-1,800 (varies by season/vehicle size)
Fuel: $260-420 (diesel $3.80-4.40/gallon, 600-800 miles typical week, 8-12 mpg at altitude = 50-100 gallons)
Propane: $40-80 (higher consumption at altitude due to cold nights)
Tolls: $5-15 (minimal in Colorado—SR-520 equivalent does not exist, mostly toll-free)
National and State Park entry: $80-120 (America the Beautiful Pass $80 covers all, or individual entries $35/vehicle national park, $10/day state parks)
National Park timed entry permits: $0-15 (Rocky Mountain NP timed entry free, Arches timed entry $2, Hanging Lake $12)
Campgrounds: $154-280 ($22-40/night x 7, Colorado parks very reasonable compared to coastal states)
Food: $250-500 (groceries vs restaurants, Denver restaurants $25-45/person, mountain resort towns $35-60/person)
Activities: $150-450 (whitewater rafting $70-120, Red Rocks concerts $30-150, 14er gear/permits, cave tours $25-35, gondola rides $30-40)
Rafting/activities: $70-200 (Arkansas River half-day, $70-90)
Total estimates:
Budget: $1,800 (smaller RV, cook all meals, national forest dispersed camping (free BLM/USFS), America the Beautiful Pass, hiking and free activities)
Mid-range: $3,100 (mid-size RV, mix cooking and restaurants, national park and state park campgrounds, major attractions, one rafting trip, Red Rocks concert)
Premium: $4,600 (larger RV, frequent dining out including resort towns, full hookup campgrounds, all attractions, guided tours, concerts, ski day in winter)
Colorado offers exceptional value compared to California—campgrounds $22-40/night versus $65-155 in coastal California. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass ($80) is essential and pays for itself quickly when visiting multiple national parks.

Denver to Los Angeles (995 miles, 16 hours via I-70/US-6/I-15, allow 7-10 days via canyon country and Las Vegas) - Utah, Nevada, Southern California
Denver to Bozeman
Denver is the highest major city in the United States and sits at the foot of the most accessible mountain wilderness on the continent. Rocky Mountain National Park is 1.5 hours away. Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved highway in the US, is within easy reach. The aspen groves turn gold in September in a display that rivals any fall color destination in North America. And within a 6-hour drive, you have access to nine national parks: Rocky Mountain, Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion.
Add world-class festivals (Red Rocks concerts, Great American Beer Festival, Telluride Film Festival), major league sports across four leagues, and some of the country's finest outdoor recreation, and Denver delivers a road trip experience that combines genuine wilderness with a thriving urban culture. Unlimited mileage and one-way hires to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, or Seattle open routes through the Colorado Plateau, the Utah canyon country, and beyond.
Over 15,000 travelers rented RVs from Denver last year, with September the single most popular month for aspen fall colors and elk rut in Rocky Mountain National Park. Find your RV and start planning your Rocky Mountain adventure.
Roads in Colorado range from excellent interstates (I-70, I-25) to genuinely challenging mountain passes. I-70 west through the Eisenhower Tunnel (11,000 feet) is well-maintained but heavily trafficked on weekends—frequent closures in winter storms. US-285 south is fast and smooth. CO-550 (Million Dollar Highway) is spectacular but demands full attention—steep grades, narrow lanes, sheer drops, tight switchbacks. Mountain passes require chains November-April.
Peak season and the window when Colorado delivers everything. All mountain roads open (Trail Ridge Road, Independence Pass, passes to Telluride). Rocky Mountain National Park wildflower meadows peak mid-July to August. Maroon Bells at their most photogenic. Mountain biking in Breckenridge and Vail, hiking 14ers (Colorado's 58 peaks over 14,000ft), white-water rafting on the Arkansas and Colorado Rivers (peak flows May-June, good conditions through August), fly fishing, kayaking. Afternoon thunderstorms develop rapidly July-August above treeline—hike early, be below treeline by noon. Book campgrounds 3-5 months ahead. Red Rocks concert season runs May-October—book RV 2-3 months ahead for concert weekends (venue is 20 miles from Denver). Telluride Film Festival (early September, 250 miles southwest), Aspen Music Festival (summer-long).
Best for: Rocky Mountain National Park (Trail Ridge Road fully open), 14er hiking (July-August best window), Maroon Bells, white-water rafting, Telluride and mountain towns, all scenic byways open, maximum daylight, family vacations (school break). Start hikes by 6-7am and be off exposed ridges by noon to avoid afternoon lightning.
Fall (September to October)
Temperatures: 59-75°F Denver, 41-59°F mountains
Rainfall: Low, dry and crisp
Exceptional season—arguably the best time to visit Colorado, and the most popular month for Denver RV rentals is September. Aspen trees turn brilliant gold and orange throughout the Rockies (late September-mid-October), among the most spectacular fall color displays in North America.. Aspen trees turn brilliant gold and orange throughout the Rockies (late September-mid-October), among the most spectacular fall color displays in North America. Elk rut in Rocky Mountain National Park (September-October): bugling males, large herds, dramatic wildlife encounters. Crowds drop significantly after Labor Day, prices fall 20-30%, campgrounds easier to book. Trail Ridge Road open until mid-October. Independence Pass closes by early November. Telluride Film Festival (early September). Great American Beer Festival (Denver, October, $100+ tickets, books out). San Juan Mountains fall color drives (Ouray, Silverton, Telluride area) among the finest in Colorado.
Best for: Aspen fall colors (must-see in Colorado), elk rut wildlife viewing, fewer crowds, shoulder season pricing, San Juan Mountains drives, Great American Beer Festival, all roads still open in September.
Winter (November to February)
Temperatures: 23-46°F Denver, well below freezing in mountains
Snowfall: Heavy in mountains, moderate in Denver
Off-peak for most parks but prime ski season. Breckenridge, Vail, Aspen, Telluride, Keystone, and Arapahoe Basin open November-April ($100-200/day lift tickets). Rocky Mountain National Park lower sections accessible year-round, Trail Ridge Road closed. Mesa Verde accessible in winter (some tours available). Great Sand Dunes beautiful and uncrowded with occasional snow dusting dunes. Lowest campground prices (some close for winter), lowest RV rental rates. I-70 mountain corridor requires chains during storms—frequent closures for severe weather. Not ideal for canyon country (cold desert nights). Holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year's, Presidents Day week) are ski-town high season with premium pricing.
Best for: Skiing near Denver (Breckenridge, Vail, Keystone), uncrowded national parks, dramatic winter landscapes, budget road travel outside ski resorts, experienced cold-weather campers.
Most popular months: July, August, September (70% of annual rentals).

Most travelers find 7-10 days ideal for Denver plus 2-3 major destinations (Rocky Mountain NP plus Moab plus Mesa Verde, or the full Colorado mountain loop).
Propane Refill Stations
Propane notes: Critical for RV travel in Colorado, powers fridge, stove, and heating, which is essential at altitude where nights drop below freezing even in summer (Rocky Mountain NP at 8,500 feet sees temperatures near 32°F in July nights). National parks have no propane. Refill in Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, or Durango for canyon country trips. Typical RV tank 20-30 gallons, costs $60-120 to fill from empty.
Dump Stations
Helpful Apps
Alcohol Limit
0.08% BAC (0.00% for under 21). DUI fines $1,000-10,000+. Marijuana is legal in Colorado, cannabis DUI laws apply. Never drive impaired.
RV-Specific
Height: Know your height (typically 9-11 feet). Eisenhower Tunnel clearance 14'6" RVs generally fine. Some older mountain town streets and historic district parking garages have lower clearances.
Length: Know your length. Independence Pass, Million Dollar Highway, and some Rocky Mountain NP roads restrict RVs over 30ft due to tight switchbacks. Check before planning route.
Propane: Turn off when entering Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels (I-70), tunnel policy. Turn off when refueling. Cold nights mean propane consumption increases significantly at altitude.
Mountain driving: Use low gears on all major downgrades (Vail Pass, Loveland Pass, Wolf Creek Pass). Never ride brakes—overheating on long mountain descents. Pull over and let brakes cool if they smell hot. Runaway truck ramps are emergency measures, use early grades carefully.
Altitude impact on RV: Diesel engines lose 5-15% power at altitude. Allow longer acceleration and passing distances on mountain roads. Water boils at 194°F at 10,000 feet, some cooking adjustments needed (pasta takes longer, bread rises more).
