RV Road Trips from Christchurch

5 to 7 Days: Southern Alps and Queenstown (approx. 900 km)
Day 1: Christchurch → Arthur's Pass (155 km, 1.5 hrs via SH73). Walk the Devils Punchbowl Waterfall track (1 hr return). Camp at Arthur's Pass Village DOC campsite. Day 2: Arthur's Pass → Franz Josef Glacier (256 km, 3.5 hrs via SH73/SH6). Walk to the glacier viewpoint (1.5 hrs return). Stay at Franz Josef TOP 10 Holiday Park. Day 3: Franz Josef → Wanaka (260 km, 3 hrs via SH6). Stop at Thunder Creek Falls on Haast Pass. Overnight at Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park. Day 4: Wanaka → Queenstown (70 km, 1 hr). Stay at Queenstown Holiday Park at Creeksyde. Day 5–7: Day trip to Milford Sound or Glenorchy, then return via Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo — or drop off in Queenstown and fly out.
7 to 10 Days: Classic South Island Loop (approx. 1,300 km)
Christchurch → Kaikōura → Blenheim → Nelson → Westport → Pancake Rocks → Franz Josef → Fox Glacier → Wanaka → Queenstown → Milford Sound → Lake Tekapo → Aoraki/Mount Cook → Christchurch. No single day exceeds 4 hours of driving. This is the most complete route for a first South Island visit and works equally well as a full loop or a one-way with a Queenstown drop-off. Browse all New Zealand campervan hire options if you're combining both islands.
14 Days: South Island to North Island One-Way
Pick up in Christchurch, complete the South Island loop, then cross to the North Island via the Interislander ferry from Picton to Wellington (book vehicle space well ahead — it sells out before passenger cabins in summer). Continue through Wellington, Tongariro, Rotorua, and the Coromandel, finishing with a drop-off in Auckland. Total distance approximately 2,200–2,500 km. Explore all South Island and North Island rental options to plan your full route.

What to do in Christchurch

Top National Parks and Scenic Drives Near Christchurch
Christchurch Coastline, Lakes, and Rivers
Best Campgrounds Near Christchurch

Arthur's Pass National Park — 155 km west via SH73, 1.5 hrs. The closest alpine terrain to Christchurch and the best day-one drive on the South Island. The pass sits at 920 meters; the Waimakariri Gorge approach is a highlight before you even arrive. Key walks: Devils Punchbowl Waterfall Track (2 km return, 1 hr, easy); Temple Basin Walkway (3 km, 2–3 hrs, alpine views). Fill up in Springfield (80 km east of the pass) — no fuel inside the park. Cell service limited beyond the village.

Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park — 335 km southwest via SH1 and SH80, 3.5 hrs. New Zealand's highest mountain (3,724 m) and the Hooker Valley Track (10 km return, 3 hrs, easy) end at a glacial lake with direct views of the peak. The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve covers 4,300 km² — stay inside the park for the best stargazing in the country. Fill up at Twizel (60 km south) or Lake Tekapo (105 km north) — no fuel at the village.

Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound — approx. 700 km from Christchurch via Queenstown, 7–8 hrs. The Milford Road (SH94) from Te Anau is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. The Homer Tunnel is single-lane — expect short waits. Overnight camping at Milford Sound Lodge puts you at the water before day-tripper buses arrive. Book months ahead in summer. No fuel at Milford Sound — fill in Te Anau (120 km east).

Banks Peninsula — 78 km southeast via SH75, 1 hr. A collapsed ancient volcano with a deeply indented coastline that most South Island visitors skip entirely. Akaroa is a French-settled harbour town with boat trips to see Hector's dolphins most mornings. Summit Road along the crater rim gives sweeping views over both sides of the peninsula. Stay on SH75 into Akaroa with a campervan — some Summit Road side routes are steep and narrow.

Kaikōura Peninsula — 180 km north via SH1, 2.5 hrs. The Peninsula Walkway (11 km loop, 3 hrs) passes a large fur seal colony at the southern end. Whale Watch Kaikōura tours (from NZ$165/adult) operate year-round. The Seaward Kaikōura Range rising directly behind the town makes the approach from the south one of the most dramatic drives on the island.

Why Hire an RV in Christchurch

Christchurch gives you access to both coasts, the Southern Alps, the north of the island, and Fiordland without committing to a direction on day one. From Queenstown you're effectively in one corner of the island. From Christchurch you can go four directions and stay on sealed roads. That's the main geographic argument for starting here.

The South Island's best experiences are also specifically campervan-suited. Milford Sound is better experienced by sleeping at the fiord overnight — arriving before the tour buses at 6 a.m. is worth the logistics. Aoraki/Mount Cook's dark skies require staying inside the park, not driving back to a hotel in Twizel. The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are a two-hour stop, not a destination in themselves. A campervan removes the constant calculation between accommodation location and attraction access.

Why Choose Indie Campers in Christchurch

Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Christchurch rental companies:

Unlimited mileage — Drive to Milford Sound, up the West Coast, and back through Mount Cook without watching a kilometer counter. Most competitors cap daily mileage at 200–250 km. Indie Campers doesn't cap at all.

One-way hires across 70+ locations — Pick up in Christchurch, drop off in Queenstown or Auckland. New Zealand's shape makes one-way travel the logical choice — the best routes don't loop back to where they started.

24/7 road assistance — Included on every booking. Remote South Island roads are not the place to be without support.

Basic Protection Plan included — Covered from day one, with optional upgrades at booking.

Flexible cancellation — Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.

Book now, pay later — Secure your vehicle today; full payment isn't due until closer to departure.

Self-Contained Vehicles and Freedom Camping in New Zealand

Every campervan traveler in New Zealand needs to understand this before booking. As of December 7, 2024, all rental vehicles must be certified self-contained under the SCVS 2024 standard, identified by a green warrant sticker , the older blue sticker is no longer valid for freedom camping. Self-contained vehicles must have a fixed or plumbed-in toilet; portable toilets no longer qualify.

For finding legal freedom camping spots, download CamperMate, WikiCamps NZ, or the Rankers Camping app before leaving the city. Cell coverage in parts of Fiordland and the West Coast is limited. Our guide toessential camping apps for road trips covers the most useful tools for South Island travel.

Best Time to Hire an RV in Christchurch

Summer (December to February) — 18–25°C (64–77°F). Longest days, full park access, peak wildflower season in the Mackenzie Basin. Campgrounds fill quickly — book 2–3 months ahead for Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, and Milford Sound. Best for first-time visitors who want reliable weather. Skip if you hate booking everything in advance.

Autumn (March to May) — 10–20°C (50–68°F). Crowds thin after Easter. Beech forests in Fiordland and Arthur's Pass turn gold in April. Walk-in campsites become available. The Milford Road and most South Island routes stay fully open. Best for travelers who want space and good light. The best-value season on the South Island.

Winter (June to August) — 2–12°C (36–54°F). Mount Hutt ski field (90 min from Christchurch) and Coronet Peak (30 min from Queenstown) are operating from mid-June. See Indie Campers' dedicated South Island ski trip by campervan itinerary for how to plan this. The Milford Road can close for avalanche control — check journeys.nzta.govt.nz before heading to Fiordland. Best for skiers and budget travelers.

Spring (September to November) — 8–18°C (46–64°F). Mackenzie Basin lupins peak late October into November — one of the most photographed landscapes in New Zealand and still relatively uncrowded. Campgrounds are quiet and prices are lower than summer. West Coast rainfall is heavy in spring — allow flexibility if your route includes Franz Josef.

The most popular months for Christchurch campervan hires are December, January, and February.

One-Way Hires from Christchurch

Christchurch → Queenstown (approx. 490 km, 5.5 hrs via inland route) — The most popular one-way on the South Island. Drive south via Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo, or west via Arthur's Pass and the West Coast for a longer approach. Drop off in Queenstown and fly home from Queenstown Airport (ZQN).

Christchurch → Auckland (approx. 1,200 km by road plus Interislander ferry) — The full New Zealand one-way. Complete the South Island, cross from Picton to Wellington by ferry, then continue north to Auckland. Book ferry vehicle space before passenger cabins — it sells out first in peak season.

One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability at booking. Explore all South Island and North Island rental options to build your full route.

Practical Logistics

Getting from the Airport — Christchurch International Airport (CHC) is 10 minutes from the depot at 189 Blenheim Road, Riccarton. Taxi from the terminal: approx. NZ$25–35. Uber is available at CHC. Confirm shuttle arrangements with Indie Campers at booking.

Driving — New Zealand drives on the left. Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on open roads. Many South Island roads are two-lane and winding — budget 20–30% more travel time than a car on the same route. Check road closures at journeys.nzta.govt.nz before remote drives.

Fuel — No fuel at Milford Sound (fill in Te Anau, 120 km east), at Aoraki/Mount Cook (fill in Twizel or Lake Tekapo), or inside Arthur's Pass (fill in Springfield). Average South Island fuel prices: NZ$2.40–2.80/litre for 91 octane.

Tolls — No tolls on most South Island roads. The main toll roads are on the North Island. If your one-way route takes you to Auckland, pay electronically at nzta.govt.nz/roads-and-rail/toll-roads.

“Kate and blue were superb at indie campers Christchurch, got us on the road quickly and unloaded and checked out on our return, awesome service ”

Richard G.

“We had an exceptional time in our Campervan. I’m not sure how frequently IndieCampers in NZ change out their vehicle but the one rented to us only had 2k/km. Would highly recommend using the same vendor if you’re in South Island of NZ. Thank you IndieCampers!! We had a blast with the van!”

Amanda G.

“Cannot fault a brand new vehicle to travel in, smooth, spacious and ticked all the boxes ”
