Campervan & RV Rental in Iceland

Iceland's road network connects to a single loop. Route 1, the Ring Road, runs 1,332 km around the perimeter of the island and puts every major landscape within 30-60 minutes of the main road. The South Coast packs 14 named waterfalls, three major glacier tongues, and two of the most recognizable black sand beaches in the world into a 300 km stretch of Route 1. The north has Europe's most powerful waterfall (193 cubic meters per second at peak flow), a geothermal lake circled by pseudocraters, and a second city most travelers push through too fast. The Westfjords are cut by 14 separate fjord inlets and receive roughly 5% of Iceland's total visitor numbers. No other country this size offers this density of extreme geology with this level of paved road access.
One pick up center serves the entire country. You land, collect bags, rideshare to the depot, and you're driving within the hour. Iceland is an island with one international airport and a road system designed as a circuit. The Ring Road is not a point-to-point drive; it's a loop. That geography shapes every itinerary on this page.
The practical case for a campervan in Iceland is stronger than almost anywhere in the network. Over 170 registered campsites are distributed along the Ring Road and its main branches, spaced roughly every 60-90 minutes of driving. Campsite costs run ISK 1,500-3,000 per person per night (~€10-20), a fraction of what guesthouses charge anywhere on the island. Iceland's most photographed sites, Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara, Jökulsárlón, are all directly on or within minutes of Route 1, most with free or low-cost access. A campervan gives you the timing flexibility to arrive before the tour coaches, stay when the light is doing something interesting, and move when you're ready.

Iceland by Region: Where to Go and What to Expect

Southwest Iceland
The South Coast
East Iceland
North Iceland
The Westfjords

Pick up center: Keflavík
Distance across region: 150 km (Keflavík to Þingvellir via Reykjavik)
Drive time end to end: 2 to 2.5 hours

The southwest is where every Iceland trip begins by default: the airport, the depot, and Reykjavik are all here. The Reykjanes Peninsula, the volcanic ridge running southwest toward the airport, has seen recurrent eruptions since 2021; lava fields from the last two years are visible from the road. Þingvellir, 45 km east of Reykjavik via Route 36, is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet at the surface in a rift valley you can walk through. The Golden Circle, Iceland's most-driven tourist circuit, links Þingvellir, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall in a 300 km loop from the capital.

Best for: First-time Iceland visitors; short trips; anyone who wants a day in Reykjavik before the road opens up
Iconic route: The Golden Circle (300 km, 2-3 days, loop from Keflavík)
Don't miss: Þingvellir rift valley, Strokkur geyser, Gullfoss two-tier waterfall, Reykjanes active lava fields
Best months: June through September; year-round accessible

Why Rent an RV in Iceland

Iceland's geography rewards campervan travel in ways that scheduled accommodation cannot match. The country's most dramatic lighting conditions, the midnight sun angling low across the South Coast at 11pm in June, a clear aurora developing over Mývatn at 1am in September, happen on their own schedule and with no warning. A campervan parked at the right location when those moments arrive beats a hotel room 40 km down the road by a wide margin.

The cost case is also straightforward. A twin room in a guesthouse on the South Coast during peak season costs ISK 25,000-45,000 per night (~€170-300). A campsite pitch with electricity costs ISK 2,000-4,500 for the same night, or less with a Camping Card. Over a 10-day Ring Road trip with two people, that difference compounds to a meaningful number. Iceland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for accommodation; the campervan closes that gap more aggressively here than almost anywhere else in the Indie network.

The infrastructure supports it. Iceland has operated a national campsite network for decades, and the 2015 wild camping regulations that restricted informal overnight parking simultaneously pushed investment into the registered site network. Electricity hookups, showers, and Wi-Fi are standard at most Ring Road campsites. Route 1 is treated and maintained year-round by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin). The combination of a dense campsite network, well-maintained paved roads, and no tolls on the national road system makes Iceland one of the most operationally straightforward campervan destinations in Europe, including for first-time renters.

Why Choose Indie Campers in Iceland

Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Iceland rental companies:

Unlimited mileage: Drive the full Ring Road, add the Snæfellsnes loop, continue into the Westfjords, and the odometer doesn't affect your cost. Most competitors cap daily distance at 200-250 km; a proper Ring Road trip with detours regularly exceeds 2,000 km over 14 days.

Pick up center steps from KEF arrivals: Fitjabraut 3 is 10 minutes from Keflavík Airport. No city transfer, no shuttle, no wasted first day in a hotel waiting for check-in.

24/7 road assistance: Included on every booking, active from the moment you leave the depot. Coverage applies on all permitted routes across Iceland, including the Westfjords and East Iceland fjord roads.

Basic Protection Plan included: Third-party liability and basic vehicle coverage from day one. For Iceland specifically, upgrading to a plan that includes windshield and sand/ash protection is worth considering; gravel road stone chips and Mýrdalssandur ash plain conditions are the most common claim triggers on Icelandic rentals.

Flexible cancellation available: Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.

Book now, pay later: Secure your dates today; full payment is not due until 30 days before pick-up.

Indie Campers is the world's leading road trip platform: 7,000+ vehicles across 70+ locations on three continents, with over 100,000 verified traveler reviews averaging 4.8 out of 5. The same fleet standards, booking experience, and 24/7 support structure you get in Iceland apply whether you're picking up in Keflavík, Los Angeles, or Sydney. For a destination as remote as Iceland, that consistency matters: you are not renting from a local operator with three vans and a phone number. You are backed by a global network.

What's the Best Time to Rent an RV in Iceland?

Summer (June, July, August)

National picture: Midnight sun runs from approximately June 20 through July 20 with 24 hours of usable light. All 170+ campsites are open. Highland F-roads (off-limits to campervans regardless) typically open late June. Sea level temperatures: 10-15°C. Mountain passes at night: 3-7°C. Cold mornings are standard in July regardless of sunshine.

  • South Coast: Peak season. Tour coaches at the major sites from 9am-6pm. Arrive before 8am or after 7pm at Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara, and Jökulsárlón for manageable crowds.
  • North Iceland: Full Mývatn and Dettifoss access. Akureyri runs a summer festival calendar from late June.
  • Westfjords: The only practical window for the full circuit. Puffins at Látrabjarg June through August.
  • Snæfellsnes: Fully accessible. All Route 54 campsites open.

Best for: First-time Iceland visitors; families; anyone wanting full road access and maximum daylight
Skip if: You are specifically chasing northern lights. Midnight sun eliminates aurora visibility from May through August entirely.
Booking note: Book the depot and South Coast campsites at least 3 months ahead for July travel.

Shoulder Season (May and September)

National picture: May brings increasing daylight and gradual opening of secondary roads. September brings the first reliable aurora activity from the third week of the month and a sharp drop in visitor numbers after August. Both months offer lower campsite costs and better access to major sites without the summer crowds.

  • South Coast: Fully accessible. Expect 5-10°C and variable weather. Waterproofs are standard kit, not optional.
  • North Iceland: September especially: Mývatn is quieter, aurora visible from mid-month on clear nights.
  • Westfjords: Accessible in May; September requires active monitoring of road.is, and some gravel roads deteriorate in autumn rain. A number of campsites close September 1.
  • Snæfellsnes: Accessible both months with standard weather precautions.

Best for: Experienced travelers; aurora chasers; anyone returning to Iceland for a second trip
Skip if: You need guaranteed campsite availability across every planned stop; some South Coast sites close in late September.
Booking note: 4-6 weeks in advance is generally sufficient; South Coast campsites still fill fast in May.

Winter (October through April)

National picture: Northern lights are highest probability between October and March, peaking around the winter solstice with 18-19 hours of darkness. Route 1 is maintained year-round but demands winter driving experience and daily conditions monitoring. Black ice, storm-force lateral winds, and drifting snow are routine. F-roads are completely closed. Most campsites are closed; approximately 10-15 operate year-round including Reykjavik City Campsite and a handful on the South Coast.

  • South Coast: Accessible but demanding. The Skeiðarársandur plain generates severe wind in winter storms.
  • North Iceland: The most challenging stretch for winter driving. Ice is standard, not exceptional.
  • Westfjords: Not recommended for campervan travel in winter. Road access is genuinely uncertain.
  • Snæfellsnes: Accessible in good conditions but the western tip is fully exposed to Atlantic storms.

Best for: Experienced winter drivers specifically pursuing northern lights; travelers comfortable with significant daily itinerary flexibility
Skip if: You are a first-time campervan renter, a first-time Iceland visitor, or traveling with children.
Booking note: Build complete flexibility into every overnight plan in winter. Road closures can force itinerary changes with less than an hour's notice.

The most popular months for Iceland campervan rentals are July, August, and June.

Where to Fly Into Iceland for an RV Trip

Southwest Iceland

Keflavík International Airport (KEF) — Keflavík, 10 minutes from pick up center
Best for: Every Iceland road trip. There is no alternative.

Keflavík is Iceland's only airport handling scheduled international routes. Direct flights operate from North America (New York JFK and EWR, Boston, Minneapolis, Seattle, Toronto, and others seasonally) and across Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and more) via Icelandair, British Airways, easyJet, Wizz Air, and others. The Indie Campers depot is 10 minutes from arrivals. No transfer bus, no city hotel, no connecting stop required. Take a taxi or rideshare from arrivals directly to Fitjabraut 3 and you're collecting your vehicle within the hour.

Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) in the city center handles inter-island routes and domestic connections to the Westfjords and North Iceland. It receives no international scheduled flights and is not relevant to road trip logistics.

Tips for Renting an RV in Iceland

Payment and Deposit

A credit card is required at pick-up for the security deposit. Deposit amount varies by protection plan level; upgrading your plan reduces the deposit required.

Protection Plans

Basic Protection is included and covers third-party liability. For Iceland specifically, consider upgrading to a plan that includes windshield coverage; stone chips from gravel roads are the most common insurance claim on Icelandic rentals. Sand and ash protection film is available as an add-on and is relevant for South Coast travel near the Mýrdalssandur ash plain and active volcanic zones on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The Camping Card Iceland

Covers unlimited nights at 120+ campsites for one vehicle and one adult. Approximate cost: ISK 24,900 (~€175 at 2024 exchange rates). Available at the Reykjavik City Campsite, online at campingcard.is, and at some tourist information points. For any Ring Road trip of 10 or more nights, the card pays for itself within the first 6-7 nights. Additional adults pay a per-night fee at each campsite on top of the card.

Campsite Booking

No single national platform. Most Ring Road campsites accept walk-ins but the South Coast corridor and Reykjavik fill completely in July. Book directly with individual campsites for peak season. For July travel, book at least 6-8 weeks ahead for key sites; 3 months ahead for the most popular South Coast stops.

Essential Apps

  • road.is (Vegagerðin): live road closures, snow conditions, and access status by route number. Check every morning before departure.
  • vedur.is (Icelandic Met Office): weather forecasts by location, wind speeds, and storm warnings. The color-coded alert system (green, yellow, orange, red) is your day-planning reference.
  • 112 Iceland: national emergency app. Register your travel plan and send GPS location to emergency services regardless of cell coverage. Download before you leave Keflavík.
  • SafeTravel.is: travel registration platform. Log your itinerary; if you are overdue, search and rescue is automatically alerted. Recommended for Westfjords and East Iceland travel.
  • Maps.me or OsmAnd: offline maps. Download the Iceland map before leaving the depot.
  • Camping Card Iceland app: manage Camping Card bookings and locate participating campsites along your route.
  • N1 or Orkan apps: show fuel station locations. Useful for planning stops in North and East Iceland where gaps exceed 80 km.

Driving in Iceland: What You Need to Know

License and Age Requirements

  • Minimum rental age: 21 years old
  • EU and EEA licenses are accepted without additional documentation
  • Non-EU/EEA drivers (US, Canadian, UK post-Brexit, Australian) must carry a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national license. IDPs are issued by national automobile associations and typically take 1-2 weeks to process; apply before you travel.
  • Iceland drives on the right. The country switched from left-hand traffic in 1968. If you arrive from the UK or Ireland, confirm this with your check-in agent at the depot.

Speed Limits

  • Paved roads outside towns: 90 km/h
  • Gravel roads: 80 km/h posted; 60 km/h is the recommended maximum for campervans on loose gravel
  • Towns and villages: 50 km/h
  • Residential zones: 30 km/h where marked

Enforcement: Fixed radar cameras operate on several stretches of Route 1, particularly between Reykjavik and Selfoss and near Akureyri. Mobile units are active in the south and north. Fines are issued against the vehicle registration and processed against your rental agreement. Iceland's police do not extend leniency to foreign drivers.

RV-specific note: Gravel roads generate stone chips. Slow down when passing oncoming vehicles on gravel; this is where most windshield damage on Icelandic rentals occurs. Check whether your protection plan covers windshield claims; it is the most frequent claim category on Icelandic rentals.

Toll Roads

The Ring Road and Iceland's entire national road network carry no tolls. Two tunnels have charges: the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel near Akureyri (6.9 km) costs approximately ISK 2,500 for campervans, payable online via veggjald.is within 3 hours before or after transit. No booths. The Hvalfjörður tunnel northwest of Reykjavik (ISK 1,800 for larger vehicles) saves 45 minutes versus the mountain road alternative and is optional.

Road Rules Specific to Iceland

  • Headlights: required at all times, day and night, no exceptions
  • Single-lane bridges: ubiquitous throughout Iceland, especially in the east and north. One lane shared by both directions. The first vehicle to arrive has right of way. Approach slowly, check for oncoming traffic, wait if the bridge is occupied. This is a hard rule, not a courtesy.
  • Off-road driving: strictly illegal under Icelandic environmental law. Driving off marked roads causes permanent damage to Iceland's fragile moss and soil. Fines start at ISK 100,000. All rental vehicles are GPS monitored. Do not attempt it.
  • Roundabouts: traffic already on the roundabout has right of way.
  • Pedestrian crossings: pedestrians have legal right of way at all marked crossings. Iceland enforces this strictly; do not roll through a crosswalk.

BAC Limit

0.05%. Lower than the US, UK, and most of southern Europe. A single standard drink is enough to push most adults to or above this limit. Zero alcohol before driving is the right call. First offense: immediate license suspension, fines from ISK 130,000-250,000, potential detention. Police checkpoints are common on weekends and public holidays.

Iceland sits at the higher end of the Indie Campers European network for day-to-day costs. Fuel and food are significantly more expensive than southern European destinations. The Ring Road has no tolls and the Camping Card is the single most effective cost-reduction tool available.

Iceland Road Trips: One Pick up Center, One Loop

Iceland operates from a single pick up center close to Keflavík Airport. There are no one-way rentals within Iceland because every trip starts and ends at the same location. That constraint fits the geography precisely: the Ring Road is a complete 1,332 km loop, and every major Iceland itinerary from the Golden Circle to the Westfjords circuit runs as a return trip to Keflavík. No route repeats; the island simply has that much to cover in a circle.

For travelers who want to extend into mainland Europe after Iceland, the Smyril Line ferry operates seasonally between Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland and the Faroe Islands and Denmark (Hirtshals). If you want to continue driving into the broader Indie Campers European network after Iceland, cross-border authorization must be confirmed at the time of booking. This requires advance arrangement and is not standard on Icelandic rentals.
