Our Road Trips Itineraries
Phoenix's position at the southern base of the Colorado Plateau creates a radial routing structure with no equivalent in the continental United States. Within a 300-mile radius to the north, the road connects the Sonoran Desert, the Verde Valley, the San Francisco Peaks, the Colorado River canyon system, and the Colorado Plateau's canyon country in a single continuous corridor. What hotel-based travelers cannot do is position themselves at the rim of the Grand Canyon for sunrise, drop into Oak Creek Canyon for the afternoon, and sleep next to the Painted Desert the same evening, three entirely distinct landscapes in a single day's driving requiring no backtracking.
The specific route that works only by RV from Phoenix is the Northern Arizona Loop: north on I-17 to Sedona (116 miles, 2 hours), then north through Oak Creek Canyon on AZ-89A to Flagstaff (30 miles, 45 minutes), east on I-40 to Petrified Forest (120 miles, 2 hours), north on US-89 to Page and Antelope Canyon (100 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes), northwest on US-89 to Lake Powell/Wahweap (10 miles), east on US-89 to Monument Valley (100 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes), and return south to Phoenix via US-163 and US-160 and US-89 (310 miles, 5 hours). The full loop covers approximately 786 miles and delivers 6 distinct landscapes across 7-10 days. A hotel-based version of this route requires booking 6-7 different accommodations in small towns where supply is thin and prices are high from March through May and September through November.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Phoenix rental companies:
Unlimited mileage: Drive the full Northern Arizona Loop (786+ miles) to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Lake Powell without monitoring a daily counter. Most Phoenix RV competitors cap at 100-150 miles per day; Indie Campers does not cap at all.
One-way hires across 70+ locations: Pick up in Phoenix, drop off in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Denver, or Salt Lake City. The Phoenix-to-Las Vegas o
Winter (November to February)
Temperatures in Phoenix: 45-70°F (7-21°C). Temperatures at Grand Canyon South Rim: 20-45°F (-7-7°C).
Phoenix's primary RV season is winter, which inverts the typical US pattern. Daytime temperatures in the city are ideal for desert hiking: warm enough for shorts in the afternoon, cool enough to hike without heat risk. Saguaro cacti throughout the Sonoran Desert bloom with waxy flowers January through March. Snowfall at the Grand Canyon South Rim is common December through February, which closes some viewpoint access roads intermittently but also covers the canyon rim in snow above a red-rock floor, a combination visible nowhere else in the US Southwest. Campgrounds at the South Rim are significantly easier to book in December through February than any other month.
Best for: Snowbirds, desert hikers, anyone targeting the Grand Canyon without competing for campsites. The best weather window for the Sonoran Desert itself.
Skip if: You are targeting Oak Creek Canyon swimming, Lake Powell boat ramps, or any activity requiring warm water temperatures. Everything at elevation above 5,000 feet runs cold.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures in Phoenix: 65-95°F (18-35°C). Temperatures at Grand Canyon South Rim: 40-65°F (4-18°C).
The single most in-demand window for the Northern Arizona RV circuit. Desert wildflower season in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan zones peaks mid-February through April depending on winter rainfall. The Antelope Canyon slot canyon fills with shaft-light columns at their most dramatic in late March through April as the solar angle hits the sandy floor. Spring break (mid-March through mid-April) drives the highest campsite demand of the year for Mather Campground at the Grand Canyon; book 6 months ahead if your dates fall in this window. May temperatures in Phoenix itself approach 100°F (38°C) and rising; departure by 7:00 a.m. for any desert hiking day is the rule.
3 to 5 Days
Sedona and Grand Canyon Express (approx. 500 miles / 805 km, 4 days)
Fuel Stations
Arizona has no state fuel tax exemption for recreational vehicles and pump prices in the Phoenix metro area run close to the national average. Prices on isolated desert highways (US-89 between Page and Kanab, US-163 in Monument Valley) run $0.30-0.50 per gallon above city prices. The practical strategy: fill completely at Phoenix-area Sam's Club or Costco forecourts before any extended desert leg.
Age and License Requirements
Minimum rental age: 21 years.
US license holders: A standard US driver's license is valid in all states on the itinerary including Arizona, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado.
International visitors: An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended alongside your national license for US driving. Obtain from your home country's automobile association before departure; it is not available at US airports or rental counters.
Credit Card and Deposit
A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pickup. Debit cards and prepaid cards are not accepted. The security deposit is held on the credit card at pickup; amount varies by vehicle class and selected protection plan.
National Park Passes
The America the Beautiful Annual Pass costs $80 per vehicle per year and covers entry to all National Park Service and US Forest Service fee sites. On a standard Northern Arizona Loop, it covers Grand Canyon ($35/vehicle), Petrified Forest ($25/vehicle), Sunset Crater ($25/vehicle), Montezuma Castle ($10/adult), and Saguaro National Park ($25/vehicle) if your route reaches Tucson. The pass pays for itself on day 2 of any itinerary that includes the Grand Canyon. Buy at the first park entrance station on your route or online at usgs.gov/store.
Reservation Systems
Speed Limits
Automated speed enforcement is in use in multiple Phoenix metro cities (Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa) via fixed and mobile camera systems. Notices are mailed to the registered address of the rental company and passed to the renter. Do not assume you will not receive a fine because you are in a rental vehicle.
Road Conditions
campervan hire: $700-1,800 (varies by vehicle size and season; spring break and October peak weeks add 25-40%; book 3-4 months ahead to lock in lower spring and fall rates)
Fuel: $250-480 ($3.60/gallon average diesel; typical weekly distance 800-1,200 miles on the Northern Arizona Loop; at 10-12 mpg = 67-120 gallons; mountain grades on I-17 and AZ-64 add 10-15% consumption versus flat highway)
Propane: $25-60 (if a mid-trip refill is needed; fill in Phoenix before departure; no propane refill inside Grand Canyon or Petrified Forest parks)
Tolls: $5-25 (Loop 101/202 within Phoenix metro if used; I-17, I-10, US-60, and US-89 are toll-free; Monument Valley park entry fee $20/vehicle is separate from tolls)
Campgrounds: $105-385 ($15-55/night x 7; BLM dispersed camping on Tonto National Forest land at $0-5/night at the low end; full hookup sites at Wahweap/Lake Powell and Lost Dutchman State Park at the high end)

Phoenix → Las Vegas (295 miles / 475 km, 4 hours 30 minutes via US-93): The Hoover Dam and Lake Mead National Recreation Area sit directly on this route (GPS: 36.0158° N, 114.7377° W, free to drive across the dam via US-93; vehicle inspection point on approach). The Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Bridge walkway (free, GPS: 36.0108° N, 114.7366° W) gives the best overhead view of the dam. Drop off at the Indie Campers Las Vegas depot.
Phoenix → Los Angeles (373 miles / 600 km, 6 hours via I-10 W): Through the Sonoran Desert, Joshua Tree National Park (detour via I-10 W to CA-62, adds 30 miles and 45 minutes to the standard route), and the Inland Empire into LA.
Phoenix → San Diego (370 miles / 595 km, 5 hours 30 minutes via I-8 W): The I-8 corridor through the Sonoran Desert and into the Kumeyaay homeland is historically significant and crosses the Continental Divide at Yuma. Less trafficked than the LA route and delivers a Pacific coast arrival.
Phoenix is the only major US city where you can pick up a campervan in the morning, drive 2 hours, and be standing in a narrow slot canyon carved by flash floods over 4 million years into Navajo sandstone, or at the base of a 350-foot red sandstone formation above a creek that runs year-round through a desert valley. No other location in the Indie Campers US network is positioned at the southern base of the Colorado Plateau with the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, and Lake Powell all reachable within a single driving day in four different directions. The Southwest's most photographed landscapes are not adjacent to Phoenix by coincidence; the geology and geography that created them radiates outward from this exact latitude.
What is singular to a Phoenix start, and not replicable from any other location in the network, is the transition from the Sonoran Desert to the Colorado Plateau in a single drive. Leave Phoenix at 1,086 feet in the Sonoran Desert with saguaro cacti at eye level, climb I-17 through the Mogollon Rim to Flagstaff at 6,910 feet in ponderosa pine forest, and arrive at the Grand Canyon South Rim at 6,860 feet above a 1-mile-deep canyon still carved by a river 1,000 feet below. The entire ecological and geological vertical range of the American Southwest is compressed into a 225-mile drive that takes 3 hours 30 minutes. No other starting point in the country offers that same transition in that distance.
24/7 road assistance: Included on every booking. If something fails on AZ-88 near Fish Creek Canyon or on US-89 between Page and Kanab after dark, there is a number to call.
Basic Protection Plan included: Covered from day one. Additional protection upgrades are available at booking and worth considering for unpaved desert routes.
Flexible cancellation available: Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.
Book now, pay later: Reserve your Phoenix vehicle today; full payment is not due until closer to the departure date.
Best for: Wildflowers, Antelope Canyon light shafts, moderate hiking temperatures at elevation. The most popular and photogenic window in the Southwest.
Skip if: You did not book Mather Campground 4-6 months ahead. Without a reservation, you will be turned away on spring weekends.
Summer (June to September)
Temperatures in Phoenix: 100-115°F (38-46°C). Temperatures at Grand Canyon South Rim: 65-85°F (18-29°C).
Phoenix itself is not a summer RV destination in any practical sense. The National Weather Service issues Excessive Heat Warnings (defined as temperatures at or above 110°F for two or more consecutive days) an average of 14 days per year in the city, concentrated in June and July. Vehicle tires on desert asphalt in this heat require pressure checks every morning. However, the high-elevation destinations above 6,500 feet (Grand Canyon South Rim, Flagstaff, Bryce Canyon) run 25-30°F cooler and are fully viable summer destinations. The Arizona monsoon season (July through mid-September) brings afternoon flash flooding on canyon roads and washes with 15-30 minutes warning; never drive into a flooded wash regardless of apparent water depth and check forecasts daily via weather.gov/psr.
Best for: High-elevation destinations from a Phoenix pickup; Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Utah canyon country all run at comfortable summer temperatures. Phoenix as a starting point rather than a destination.
Skip if: You are planning to spend significant time at desert-level elevations below 4,000 feet between June and August. Heat-related emergencies are a real risk for unprepared travelers.
Fall (October to November)
Temperatures in Phoenix: 65-90°F (18-32°C). Temperatures at Grand Canyon South Rim: 40-65°F (4-18°C).
October is broadly the best single month for a Phoenix-based RV trip that covers both desert and canyon country. Temperatures across all elevations are within a reasonable range, the monsoon has ended, Mather Campground becomes significantly easier to book after Labor Day, and the cottonwood trees in Oak Creek Canyon turn yellow and orange in mid-October with a 7-10 day peak window that draws photographers from across the Southwest.
Best for: The broadest temperature range across all elevations, cottonwood fall color in Sedona, post-monsoon clear skies, and the easiest campsite booking of the Southwest season.
Skip if: You want to swim in Oak Creek or the Colorado River tributary beaches; water temperatures are cold by October at canyon elevations.
The most popular months for Phoenix campervan hires are October, November, March, and April.
Apache Trail Desert Loop (approx. 280 miles / 450 km, 3 days)
7 to 10 Days
Northern Arizona Circuit (approx. 786 miles / 1,265 km, 8 days)
14 Days or More
Southwest Grand Loop: Phoenix to Las Vegas, One-Way (approx. 1,600 miles / 2,575 km, 14 days)
Average fuel price in Arizona: $3.40-3.80/gallon regular; $3.70-4.20/gallon diesel.
Toll Setup
If your Phoenix route uses Loop 101 or Loop 202, set up an AZToll account at aztoll.com before pickup. The alternative is plate-based billing, which works automatically but charges approximately 30% more per transaction.
Driving Culture
Arizona has a right-turn-on-red default; you may turn right at a red light after a complete stop unless a sign prohibits it. This catches drivers from countries where right-on-red does not exist.
Passing on two-lane desert highways: many US-89 and US-163 sections have designated passing lanes at regular intervals on climbs; use them rather than attempting to pass on blind corners. Drivers on narrow canyon roads (AZ-88, AZ-179 through Oak Creek) expect the uphill-traveling vehicle to yield to the downhill-traveling vehicle on tight sections.
Wildlife crossings are not theoretical in Arizona. Elk crossing zones are active on I-17 and US-89 between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, particularly at night. Javelinas and coyotes cross suburban Phoenix roads at dawn and dusk year-round. Reduce speed to 55 mph on unlit desert highways after dark.
Dust storms (haboobs): Wall-shaped dust storms are common in the Phoenix area from July through September. If a dust wall is visible, pull completely off the road, turn off all lights (to avoid other drivers mistaking your position for an open lane), set the parking brake, and wait for the storm to pass. Arizona law (A.R.S. 28-775) specifically addresses this: turn off all lights and wait.
RV-Specific Notes
Height: Phoenix city center car parks have 6-7 foot clearances, which exclude all campervans. Input your vehicle's roof height into Waze or a dedicated RV navigation app before entering any urban area. The AZ-179 underpass near the Bell Rock area has a posted clearance; verify before routing a tall vehicle.
Length: Most Arizona State Park and National Forest campgrounds accommodate up to 40-45 feet. Sedona campgrounds (Cave Springs, Manzanita) have strict limits of 22-36 feet; verify before booking.
Propane: No tunnel restrictions on major Arizona highways. The Navajo Nation permits standard propane in sealed containers without restriction on US-89 and US-163.
Parking: Phoenix city center street parking meters run $1-3/hour with 2-hour limits; not practical for overnight RV use. For city-day access, use surface lots in the Midtown corridor (around 16th Street and Camelback) or approach the city center by rideshare from a Phoenix-area Stellplatz.
Heat and RV maintenance: Check tire pressure cold every morning from May through September; asphalt temperatures above 150°F dramatically accelerate tire failure on underinflated sidewalls. Check engine coolant level before any ascent over 4,000 feet. The I-17 climb to Flagstaff (the Mogollon Rim grades) is a known stressor for underpowered or poorly maintained vehicles.
Legal Notes
BAC limit: 0.08% for drivers 21 and over; 0.00% for drivers under 21 (zero tolerance). Arizona is a strict DUI state; first-offense conviction at 0.08%+ carries a mandatory minimum of 10 days in jail (1 day served, 9 days suspended), $1,250 fine plus surcharges, and 90-day license suspension. First-offense "extreme DUI" at 0.15%+ carries a mandatory 30 days jail, $2,500+ in fines and surcharges.
Parking: $20-70 (trailhead day use fees $5-10/day at popular Sedona and Superstition area trailheads; city center parking not practical for RVs)
Budget: approx. $1,450 -- Compact vehicle, all self-catering from Costco and Fry's, mix of BLM dispersed sites ($0-5/night) and state park dry camping ($15/night), America the Beautiful Pass covering all park entries, Antelope Canyon not included, no dining out.
Mid-range: approx. $2,600 -- Mid-size vehicle, mix of self-catering and eating out including one or two restaurant evenings, developed campgrounds throughout (Lost Dutchman with hookups, Mather at Grand Canyon, Wahweap at Lake Powell), America the Beautiful Pass, Antelope Canyon guided tour included.
Premium: approx. $4,200+ -- Larger motorhome, frequent dining including Pizzeria Bianco, Barrio Café, and lodge dining at El Tovar at the Grand Canyon South Rim ($30-60/person), full hookup sites throughout, Antelope Canyon premium tour, Taliesin West, Desert Botanical Garden, Zion and Bryce Canyon extension included.
Phoenix is competitively priced compared to California-based RV trips: campsite costs are lower, fuel prices average $0.20-0.40/gallon below Los Angeles, and the primary national park destinations on the Northern Arizona Loop charge less per vehicle than the California Coast parks. The main cost escalation happens when extending north into Utah (Zion and Bryce campgrounds run $20-35/night) or when adding guided experiences like Antelope Canyon, which require a Navajo-licensed guide and add $65-75/adult to the itinerary.
Phoenix → Salt Lake City (660 miles / 1,060 km, 9 hours 30 minutes via I-15 N): Through the Virgin River Gorge on I-15 in Nevada (one of the most dramatically walled interstate corridors in the US), Zion National Park, and up the I-15 corridor through Utah. Drop off at the Indie Campers Salt Lake City.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.

“Excellent trip. Only issue was they had no child seat to fit my 7 year old so we had to buy one but they quickly refunded us the booking cost. Jeep was clean and the chairs and table and stove worked well. Maybe consider providing camping kitchen stuff so it is more compact than regular kitchen stuff.”
“Great hosts would come here again ”
“It’s our second experience. Looking forward to a 3rd trip”
