Our Road Trips Itineraries
Edinburgh's position on Scotland's east coast means you're accessing Highlands, islands, lochs, and hundreds of miles of rugged coastline. Here's what you can reach:
Here's what sets us apart:
May-June and September are ideal. Scotland has oceanic climate—cool year-round, rain any time, but distinct seasons.
Spring (April to May)
Temperatures: 46-57°F (April cool, May milder)
Conditions: Spring blooms, longer days, variable weather
Late spring (May) is lovely. Comfortable temps (50-59°F), fewer midges than summer (peak July-Aug), Highland landscapes green and fresh, lambing season (cute), longer days (sunset 9pm May), fewer tourists than peak summer (30% fewer), lower prices (20-30% less). But: Weather variable (showers common, 12-15 rainy days/month, bring layers), Highland attractions opening season (some open May 1), snow possible on high peaks. Some single-track roads may have lingering snow/mud early April.
Best for: Highland scenery without crowds, photography (green landscapes, dramatic clouds), budget travelers, avoiding midges, comfortable hiking temps. Wildflowers blooming late May.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 57-66°F (mild, rarely hot)
Conditions: Long days, midges peak, busy season
Peak season. Warmest weather (59-66°F typical, 72-77°F rare heatwave days), incredibly long days (June sunset 10pm, twilight till midnight—"simmer dim," magical), all attractions open, Edinburgh Fringe (August, 3 weeks, city packed with street performers/shows/comedy), Highland Games (various villages, July-Aug), swimming (lochs 57-61°F—cold but doable, bravest try). But: Midges (July-Aug peak, tiny biting insects, swarms in calm/damp conditions, dawn/dusk worst, bring midge repellent Smidge/Avon Skin So Soft), crowded (Isle of Skye, North Coast 500, Loch Lomond overrun July-Aug), campgrounds book 3-4 weeks ahead, prices peak. Weather still variable (rain possible any day, Scotland averages 155-200 rain days/year depending on location).
3 to 5 Days
Loch Lomond & Stirling Loop (217 miles, 4 days)
East Coast & Cairngorms (310 miles, 4-5 days)
Glencoe & Fort William (373 miles, 5 days)
Fuel Stations
Average diesel price: $1.83-2.08/L (Scotland similar to England, remote Highlands $0.13-0.25/L more expensive)

What's Included
Single-Track Roads
See Practical Logistics above. Most stressful aspect for visitors. Take your time, breathe, other drivers patient. Rewarding scenery worth it.
Wildlife on Roads
Dusk/dawn = highest risk for wildlife collisions. Drive carefully.
Alcohol Limit
0.05% BAC (50mg/100ml blood, stricter than England's 0.08%). Scotland enforces strictly. Fines $630-unlimited + 6-month driving ban minimum. Whisky tastings: Spit or designate driver. One dram = over limit often.
RV-Specific
Height: Know it (typically 9.2-10.5ft). Highland stone bridges often low (some 9.2-9.8ft clearance, signed but watch), Edinburgh has low railway bridges (signed).
Scotland is moderate UK (similar to England, more expensive than mainland Europe).
campervan hire: $800-1,465 (€735-1,350 / $800-1,465, varies by season/vehicle)
Fuel: $220-345 (diesel $1.83-2.08/L, 435-560 miles typical week, 13-15L/100km = 91-135L, Highlands driving uses more fuel)
Tolls: $0 (no tolls in Scotland, occasional bridge charges but rare)
Campgrounds: $247-476 ($35-68/night × 7, or wild camp free but campgrounds convenient)
Food: $175-530 (cook most meals—restaurants $25-44/person, supermarket groceries $25-44/day for two, eating out expensive)
Activities: $100-380 (castle entries $13-24.50, distillery tours $13-38, museum entries $7.50-19, many free sights/hikes)
Parking: $19-50 (city parking if needed, campgrounds include parking, wild camping free)
Total estimates:
Scotland is expensive. Eating out $38-63/person, fuel prices high, but wild camping free (huge saving), hiking free, scenery priceless. Cooking saves $250-500/week.
Edinburgh → Glasgow (47 miles, 1 hour via M8) - Scotland's largest city, museums, urban contrast
Edinburgh → Inverness (155 miles, 3h 15min via A9) - Highland capital, North Coast 500 starting point
Glasgow → Edinburgh (reverse, popular for western entry)
Inverness → Edinburgh (reverse, popular for NC500 finish)
One-way fees vary. Edinburgh-Glasgow minimal ($63-125, short distance, high demand both ways). Edinburgh-Inverness/Fort William may have fees $125-250 (vehicle redistribution).
Edinburgh combines capital city sophistication (castles, museums, festivals, Georgian architecture) with immediate Highland access, you can climb Arthur's Seat's volcanic summit in the morning and hike beneath Ben Nevis's cliffs by afternoon. You're not choosing between urban culture and wilderness, Edinburgh gives you both, plus Scotland's most dramatic landscapes within three hours.
Most importantly, Edinburgh's east coast position means you can reach Loch Lomond's bonnie banks in 1.5 hours, Isle of Skye's jagged Cuillins in 5 hours, or Cairngorms' mountain plateau in 2 hours for multi-week explorations. One-way hires open routes from Lowland civilization to Hebridean islands without backtracking.
Over 18,000 travelers rented from Edinburgh last year, with June-September account
East Lothian Coast - (19-37 miles east, 30-60 min) Picturesque coastline:
The roads vary dramatically—freeways excellent near Edinburgh (M8, M9, A9), single-track roads in Highlands/islands (passing places, sheep on road, 30-40mph speeds, patience essential), left-hand driving (UK drives on left). Highland routes stunning but slow (A82 Glencoe, A87 to Skye, average 35-45mph with stops/conditions).
Best for: Maximum daylight (explore till 10pm), guaranteed open attractions, Edinburgh Fringe (August), warmest weather (relatively), swimming (if brave). Accept midges as price of summer.
Fall (September to October)
Temperatures: 54-61°F (Sept), 46-54°F (Oct)
Conditions: Autumn colors, fewer midges, comfortable temps
September is perfect. Comfortable (54-61°F), midges declining (life cycle ends, huge relief), fewer tourists (50% fewer than August), lower prices (30-40% off summer), autumn colors (Highlands golden/orange, especially birch trees, stunning Sept-mid Oct), comfortable hiking without summer crowds. October good (50-57°F) but daylight shortens fast (sunset 6pm late Oct), weather wetter. Heather blooms Aug-Sept (purple moors, iconic Scotland).
Best for: Highland autumn colors (photography paradise), avoiding midges, fewer crowds on Skye/NC500, shoulder season pricing, comfortable temps. Ideal for North Coast 500 (roads quieter).
Winter (November to March)
Temperatures: 37-45°F (mild but damp, freezing in Highlands)
Conditions: Cold, wet, dark, snow in Highlands, limited services
Off-season. Edinburgh mild (39-46°F, rarely below 32°F) but gray, damp, Highlands harsh (snow Nov-April above 1,968ft, 23 to 5°F peaks, roads can close). Short days (sunset 3:45pm December—dark, depressing for some, cozy for others). Many Highland campgrounds closed (Nov-March), attractions limited hours. But: Empty landscapes (essentially have Highlands to yourself), Hogmanay (Edinburgh New Year, Dec 31-Jan 1, huge street party, fireworks, book accommodation 6+ months ahead if attending), skiing Cairngorms/Nevis Range (Dec-April, conditions variable), Northern Lights possible (dark skies, Sept-March, Orkney/Shetland best odds), dramatic winter light (low sun, moody, stunning for photographers). Rock-bottom prices (50% off summer). Not ideal for typical road trips unless you embrace cold/dark/cozy.
Best for: Empty Highlands, Hogmanay (Dec 31-Jan 1), skiing, Northern Lights chasing, budget travelers, avoiding all crowds, cozy pub culture. Requires winter driving skills (snow/ice in Highlands).
Most popular months: July, August, June, September (75% of annual rentals).

Helpful Apps
Verify before leaving:
Weight: Some Highland bridges have weight limits (3-7 tons, signed), most RVs under limits but check.
Heating: Ensure heating works before leaving (Highland nights 41-50°F even summer, essential for comfort).
Left-Hand Driving
UK drives on left (opposite most of Europe/North America). Right-hand drive vehicles (steering wheel on right). Takes adjustment:
Practice: Edinburgh streets before heading to Highlands.
Single-Track Roads
Common in Highlands/islands. One lane width, passing places every 100-300m (marked with white diamond sign or "Passing Place").
Rules:
Patience essential. Locals used to it, tourists often stressed initially. Slow down, enjoy scenery.
Speed Limits
Enforcement: Fixed cameras (signed, yellow/gray boxes), mobile police (Highlands especially A9), average speed cameras (A9 Perth-Inverness measures speed over distance, strictly enforced). Fines $125-3,150 + points. Obey limits (especially A9—notorious for cameras).
Midges
Culicoides impunctatus (Highland midge)—tiny biting insects, swarm May-Sept (peak July-Aug), most hated aspect of Scottish Highlands.
When/where:
Defense:
Midges won't kill you but can ruin outdoor dining/hiking. Accept as part of Scottish summer. Sept onwards = relief.
Weather Variability
Scotland famous for "four seasons in one day." Bring layers, waterproofs always:
Check Met Office forecast daily. Roads can close in winter (A93 Cairngorms, high passes).
Wild Camping
Legal in Scotland (Scottish Outdoor Access Code—right to roam responsibly):
Popular wild camping spots: Glen Coe lay-bys, Loch Ness shoreline, NC500 route. Free, stunning views, authentic Highland experience. Use common sense, be respectful. Campgrounds available if preferring facilities.
“Unbelievable experience facilitated by the great team at IndieCampers, could not recommend high enough!!”
