Our Road Trips Itineraries
Perth's position as Australia's most isolated capital city is exactly what makes it such a compelling road trip base. The distances between highlights are real, this is not a destination you tick off with a hire car and a few hotel nights. An RV gives you access to places that simply don't have accommodation: Cape Le Grand's beaches, the Karijini gorges, the remote stations along the Coral Coast. It also changes the economics entirely. Western Australia's most spectacular spots have minimal infrastructure by design, which means camping fees are low and the experience is high.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart for a WA trip specifically:
Unlimited kilometers — Perth to Esperance return is around 1,450km. Perth to Exmouth is 1,270km each way. Perth to Darwin is over 4,000km one-way. Distance caps would make most Western Australia road trips unworkable. All Indie Campers RVs include unlimited kilometers.
Flexible one-way rentals — Drop off in Darwin, Melbourne, or Adelaide instead of backtracking to Perth. This opens up the two great WA epics: Perth to Darwin along the Coral Coast (10–14 days minimum), and Perth to Melbourne via the Nullarbor (12–16 days). No backtracking, no wasted days.
Kitchen kit included — Remote WA has long stretches without restaurants or takeaway. Cooking in your RV isn't a preference here, it's often a necessity. Everything you need is on board.
24/7 roadside assistance — Covering all of Australia, including remote WA where the nearest town can be 300km away.
Pet-friendly options — Many WA national parks and free camps welcome dogs. Confirm pet policy at booking.
May to October (Dry Season) — Peak Season for Western Australia
The clear winner for most of WA. Temperatures are mild to warm, rainfall minimal, and road conditions safe for all routes including the Coral Coast. This is when Karijini, Ningaloo, and the Kimberley are at their best. Water temperatures in Exmouth peak around 26–28°C (79–82°F) in August–September — ideal for snorkeling Ningaloo Reef. Whale sharks aggregate at Ningaloo from mid-March to July; whale watching (humpbacks) peaks August–October. Book campgrounds months ahead for Cape Range National Park, sites sell out fast, especially around public holidays.
Best for: Coral Coast, Karijini, Ningaloo snorkeling, Margaret River, Broome, all inland routes.
October to April (Spring and Early Autumn) — Best for the South Coast
The shoulder and summer months are when the Great Southern shines. Wildflower season peaks August–November across southern WA, extraordinary along the South Coast. Lucky Bay and Cape Le Grand are at their warmest, and Esperance's beaches are at their most swimmable. Summer (December–February) brings heat inland but the south coast stays manageable — expect 25–30°C (77–86°F) at Esperance. Avoid Karijini and the Pilbara in this window; inland temperatures exceed 40°C (104°F) and some gorge tracks close after rain.
Best for: Perth to Esperance loop, Margaret River, Albany, Cape Le Grand, wildflower routes.

Note: Cape Range NP campsites are outstanding but book out months in advance. Rangers are strict on permits — if free camping in the area, move sites early in the morning.
21+ Days
Perth to Darwin via Coral Coast and Kimberley (approx. 4,300km, 21–28 days) The classic Western Australia epic. Perth → Lancelin → Kalbarri → Shark Bay → Ningaloo → Exmouth → Broome → Kimberley → Darwin. One-way rental, no backtracking. Everything the Coral Coast offers plus the red ranges of the Kimberley and Kakadu at the finish. See our Northern Territory Top End road trip guide for how to continue the journey once you cross into the NT.
Perth to Melbourne via the Nullarbor (approx. 3,400km, 12–16 days) Perth → Esperance → Norseman → Nullarbor Plain → Ceduna → Adelaide → Great Ocean Road → Melbourne. The Nullarbor crossing is genuinely iconic: the longest straight stretch of road in Australia (145km without a bend), whale watching at the Head of Bight (June–October), and the surreal emptiness of the plain itself. At the other end, the Great Ocean Road is one of the world's great coastal drives. Nobody drives this route and comes back the same way — it's a natural one-way journey.

Driving Tips for Western Australia
Speed Limits: 110 mph (68 mph) on highways, 100 mph on regional roads, 50 mph in urban areas. Speed cameras are common and fines are high — WA enforcement is consistent.
Road Conditions: Perth to Esperance via South Coast Highway — excellent sealed road throughout. Coral Coast (Brand Highway / North West Coastal Highway) — well maintained and sealed, some corrugations on minor access roads. Karijini — most gorge access roads are sealed but some tracks close after rain; check DPaW road conditions before arrival. Nullarbor — fully sealed, long and flat, watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk.
Wildlife: Kangaroos and emus on roads at dawn and dusk are a genuine hazard — slow down significantly in the hour after sunset and before sunrise, especially in rural WA. Cattle on unfenced open range roads in the north. Road trains (triple-trailer trucks) are common on highway routes — give them enormous space when passing.
RV-Specific: Know your vehicle height before approaching any roadhouse canopy or low bridge. Length matters on tight national park access roads — check maximum lengths for popular sites like Lucky Bay (Cape Le Grand) and Turquoise Bay (Cape Range) before booking.
No phone signal is normal in WA. Download all maps (Hema, Google offline, NPS), weather forecasts, and campground bookings before leaving the last major town. Don't rely on data for navigation east of Geraldton or south of Albany.
Perth → Darwin (4,300km, 21–28 days) — The quintessential WA road trip. Drive north along the Coral Coast through Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Ningaloo, and Exmouth, then continue through the Pilbara and into the Kimberley before reaching Darwin. You pass through Broome, Kununurra, Lake Argyle, and Kakadu. One of the great overland journeys in the world. Best done May–September. See the Northern Territory Top End guide for planning the Darwin end of the trip.
Perth → Melbourne (3,400km, 12–16 days) — East across the Nullarbor via Esperance and Norseman, through South Australia to Adelaide, then along the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne. The route combines remote coastal wilderness with one of Australia's most celebrated coastal drives at the finish. Best May–October for the Nullarbor; whale watching at Head of Bight peaks July–September.
