Our Road Trips Itineraries
Western France's geography makes the argument without embellishment. Three entirely different landscapes sit within 90 minutes of the Nantes pick up centre: the Loire Valley's tuffeau limestone château corridor to the east, the Atlantic coast and island archipelago to the south and west, and the Breton marshes and megalith fields to the northwest. The only way to connect all three without hotel logistics is by campervan, and the campground network across all three corridors is among the most developed in France.
The Loire Valley case is specific. You cannot experience the river the way it was designed to be experienced, slowly, from the bank, with time to stop at a wine cave in the cliffs and a troglodyte village and then a château, from a hotel base in Tours or Angers. A campervan on the D723 south bank road, parked for the night at an aire beside the river with a bottle of Muscadet from the Sèvre et Maine appellation 30km from where the grapes were grown, is a structurally different trip. The Loire was listed as a UNESCO Cultural Landscape, not a collection of buildings. The landscape is the thing, and you need mobility to access it properly.
Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE) is 10-12km southwest of the city centre, approximately 15-20 minutes by road. The airport shuttle bus (Navette Aéroport) runs every 20 minutes in summer for €10/person and connects to the city centre and the rail station. Budget carriers including Ryanair and easyJet serve Nantes regularly from UK, Irish, and northern European cities, making this one of the most accessible western French depots for British travellers in particular. Taxi from the airport to the city centre runs €30-40 and takes 17-20 minutes in normal traffic.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Nantes hire companies:
Unlimited kilometres — Drive from Nantes to Chambord, back along the Loire south bank to Saumur, down to La Rochelle, and across to the Île de Ré without watching the odometer. That circuit covers roughly 900km. A Loire Valley and Brittany loop from Nantes to Quimper and back runs 700km. Most competitors cap you at 200-250km per day; we don't cap at all.
One-way hire across 100+ locations — Pick up in Nantes, drop off in Bordeaux, Paris, Lyon, or Barcelona. No backtracking required. The natural one-way from Nantes runs south through the Loire Valley into Bordeaux wine country, or east through the châteaux corridor to Paris. Confirm availability and pricing at booking.
24/7 road assistance — Included on every booking. The marshes of the Brière and the Marais Poitevin and the island roads of Noirmoutier are remote in a real sense. If something goes wrong at midnight on the Île de Noirmoutier, you have someone to call.
Spring (April to June)
Temperatures: 10-22°C. The Loire Valley is at its most specific in May: the wildflowers are in the meadows between châteaux, the Muscadet vines are in early leaf above the Sèvre et Maine, and the tuffeau cliff villages along the D723 have their shutters open for the first time since September. The Brière marshes in April and May are the best single birdwatching period in the regional park's calendar, with marsh harriers establishing nesting territories and grey herons visible on every canal. Campground availability across the Loire and the coast is good through May; June brings the first summer arrivals and Atlantic coast sites begin filling on weekends. Book 3-4 weeks ahead for any June coastal booking.
Best for: Loire Valley château touring in comfortable temperatures; Brière marsh birdwatching; Noirmoutier without the July crowds.
Skip if: You need beach swimming. Atlantic coast water temperatures in May are 15-17°C, which is manageable but not warm.
Summer (July to August)
Temperatures: 22-32°C, with occasional heat spikes above 35°C in late July and August. Everything is open, everything is accessible, and everything is full. Le Voyage à Nantes runs July 4 through September 6. Hellfest at Clisson (28km southeast of Nantes) draws 65,000 per day across six days in mid-June and generates significant Loire-Atlantique traffic in both directions. The Atlantic coast beaches from Noirmoutier to Les Sables-d'Olonne are at full capacity from the second week of July through the last week of August; arrive at any beach car park after 10am and you will queue. Loire Valley campgrounds fill for weekends from Bastille Day (July 14) onward; the August fortnight (weeks 1-2 of August, when French urban residents holiday simultaneously) is the single most congested period of the year across all three corridors.

Fuel Stations
Average fuel price in the Nantes region: approximately €1.75-1.95/litre for SP95 at supermarket stations (June 2026 national average: €1.99/litre; Leclerc typically 5-8 cents below). Diesel (gazole) runs close to SP95 at current prices; check the French government's real-time fuel price map at PrixCarburants.gouv.fr before any long leg.
Minimum driver age for Indie Campers vehicles is 21. Drivers between 21 and 24 may be subject to a young driver surcharge; confirm at booking. EU licence holders: your national licence is fully valid throughout France. Visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home country licence; this combination is accepted by French authorities and Indie Campers at pick-up. A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pick-up for the security deposit.
Crit'Air Vignette
The Crit'Air sticker is mandatory for driving within the Nantes Métropole ZFE (Zone à Faibles Emissions), active Monday through Friday 8am-8pm within the ring road. Order at certificat-air.gouv.fr for €3.72 plus shipping; allow at least two weeks for delivery to a non-French address. Modern Indie Campers vehicles (post-2011 diesel, post-2006 petrol) carry Crit'Air 1 or 2 and are compliant with the Nantes ZFE minimum standard (Crit'Air 3 and above). Fines for non-compliance: €68 for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes. Confirm your vehicle's Crit'Air classification with Indie Campers at booking.
Toll Setup
Card payment is accepted at all French toll booths; no account setup is required for card payments. For the A11/A83 corridors out of Nantes, use ViaMichelin.fr with the camping-car vehicle type selected to calculate accurate route costs before departure. A Liber-t tag (available from Bip&Go or Sanef at approximately €30 setup plus usage) covers the fast electronic lane for vehicles under Class 3. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use manual lanes only.
France National Passes
France does not charge entrance fees for its regional natural parks (Brière, Marais Poitevin entry is free). The Monuments Nationaux pass (€[DATA NEEDED]/adult, valid 2 years) covers the Château de Saumur, the Abbaye de Fontevraud, and other national monuments along the Loire if your route includes multiple paid sites. The ACSI CampingCard provides discounts at 3,300+ European campgrounds outside peak season (before June 20 and after September 1); worth considering for spring or autumn Loire Valley trips.
Speed Limits
Automated speed cameras (radars automatiques) are distributed throughout the A11, A83, and N165 corridors. The A83 southbound toward La Rochelle has multiple fixed radar locations. Speed camera locations are legally required to be signposted 300-700 metres in advance in France; your navigation app (Waze) will flag them regardless. First offense fines: €68-1,500 depending on excess speed; driving at 50 km/h over the limit is a criminal offense.
Road Conditions
Excellent: A11, A83, A87, and N165 are modern well-maintained dual-carriageway roads suitable for all vehicle sizes in all weather.
Good but variable: The D723 Loire south bank road is single carriageway with frequent village crossings and a 80 km/h limit between settlements. Road surface quality varies between departments; the Anjou section east of Angers is generally better than the Loire-Atlantique western section.
Campervan hire: €700-1,500 (varies by season and vehicle size; July and August peak pricing on a large Comfort motorhome is at the top end; April or October compact Adventure vehicles start considerably lower)
Fuel: €100-200 (SP95 approximately €1.80-1.95/litre at Leclerc; estimated 500-800km for a week covering the Loire and the Atlantic coast at 9-12L/100km = 45-100 litres; fill at Leclerc Atlantis to minimise cost)
Tolls: €25-70 (A11 to Angers and the Loire minimal; A83 south to La Rochelle approximately €11-14 each way; Pont de l'Île de Ré approximately €4-16 depending on season and vehicle class; a week using 2-3 motorway corridors accumulates €40-60 for a Class 2 campervan)
Campgrounds: €60-250 (€10-67/night; free Loire-side aires on the low end; Sandaya Le Fief or Huttopia Noirmoutier in peak summer on the high end)
Food: €180-500 (groceries €25-35/day from Leclerc; mix with dining €50-70/day; La Cigale plateau de fruits de mer for two €45-65; Marché de Talensac provisioning is excellent value at €20-30 for two days of road trip food)
Activities: €50-150 (Les Machines de l'Île 3-attraction pass €29/adult; Château des Ducs museum €9/adult; Loire châteaux range €12-18/adult per site; Brière boat trip €8-12/adult; Marais Poitevin punt €8-15/adult; Le Voyage à Nantes outdoor trail free)
Nantes → Bordeaux (335km, 3 hours via A83 south): The Atlantic corridor through the Vendée. La Rochelle (160km) and the Île de Ré bridge (155km) are the natural half-day stop. Continue south via A10 through Saintes and into the Bordeaux appellation via the D2 Médoc wine route. One of the strongest one-way routes in the western French network.
Nantes → Paris via the Loire (390km, 3h30 via A11): The direct connection, but the scenic alternative is far more compelling: take the D723 south bank through Amboise and Chambord (adding 60km and 2 hours over the motorway) and arrive in Paris via the A10 having driven through the most celebrated river landscape in France.
Nantes → Bordeaux via the Marais Poitevin and La Rochelle (500km, allow 2-3 days): South on the A83 to Fontenay-le-Comte, Marais Poitevin punt and canal circuit (1 night near Coulon), north to La Rochelle (65km) and Île de Ré (1 night), south via A10 to Bordeaux. Covers Green Venice, the Atlantic coast, and the northern Gironde in sequence.
From the Nantes depot you can reach the Loire Valley, two designated UNESCO landscapes, the Atlantic island of Noirmoutier, the world's most attended classical music festival, and one of the largest megalith fields in Europe, all within 2 hours and without using the same road twice. No other city in western France puts this range of landscape types within a half-day radius without significant overlap.
The one experience that is specific to a Nantes starting point: the Muscadet wine route east of the city, through Clisson and Le Pallet, where the Sèvre et Maine appellation produces the driest, most mineral white wine in France from a granite and gneiss terroir that looks nothing like the limestone châteaux country 50km further east. Buy a bottle from a domaine on the D149, drive another 30 minutes to the Loire bank, and drink it there. The wine was made for this river. The combination is available from exactly this starting point and nowhere else in the network.
Pick up the vehicle on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning before the weekend coastal traffic builds. Walk the Marché de Talensac between 9 and 11am, buy Loire oysters and a gâteau nantais for the first night, fill the tank at Leclerc Atlantis on the way out, and drive southeast on the D149 toward Clisson. The Muscadet vines start inside 20 minutes and the Loire is visible from the ridge 10 minutes after that.
Basic Protection Plan included — Covered from day one. Optional upgrades available at booking.
Flexible cancellation available — Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.
Book now, pay later — Secure your vehicle today; full payment isn't due until closer to departure.
Autumn (September to October)
Temperatures: 12-22°C in September, 8-15°C in October. September is the best month to hire a campervan in western France. The summer crowds have gone, campground prices drop 20-30%, Le Voyage à Nantes runs through September 6, the Loire Valley harvest (vendanges) begins in mid-September in the Muscadet appellation and moves east through the Anjou and Touraine wine regions through October. The Marais Poitevin canals in autumn under the turning ash and alder trees are as atmospheric as any version of Green Venice. The Brière in October has migrating species not present in summer.
Best for: Loire wine harvest circuit; cost-conscious travellers; autumn color along the D723; migrating birds in the Brière and Marais Poitevin.
Skip if: You want reliable beach swimming. Atlantic water temperatures drop below 18°C by mid-September.
Winter (December to March)
Temperatures: 3-10°C. Winter in the Loire Valley is the off-season in every practical sense. Most riverside campgrounds close November through March. The châteaux reduce opening hours and some close for maintenance through January. The Atlantic coast at Noirmoutier in February is cold, windswept, and occupied almost entirely by locals — the mimosa in the Bois de la Chaise blooms from January through March and the island has a specific quality in winter that the summer crowds never see. La Folle Journée, the world's most attended classical music festival, takes place in Nantes each January or February at the Cité des Congrès with approximately 300,000 visitors over five days; campground Nantes-Camping on the Petit Port stays open year-round and is the practical base for the festival period.
Best for: Off-season Nantes city exploration; La Folle Journée classical music festival; Noirmoutier mimosa season; low-season pricing.
Skip if: You need open campgrounds along the full Loire Valley or Atlantic coast route. Many close October through April.
The most popular months for Nantes campervan hire are July, August, and September.
Nantes → Loire south bank road D723 to Angers (90km) → Saumur and tuffeau wine caves (50km east) → Amboise with da Vinci's tomb and Château (80km) → Chambord and the Sologne forest (50km north) → return west via A10/A11 to Tours → south on D943 to Richelieu (Rabelais country, 50km) → west via D960 to Fontenay-le-Comte → Marais Poitevin Green Venice (100km south of Nantes) → Niort overnight → north on A83 to La Rochelle (65km south of Nantes on the A83 branch) → Île de Ré one day (155km from Nantes) → return north on A83 to Nantes → Noirmoutier as final night (80km). Covers the full western Loire circuit: château corridor, tuffeau caves, Anjou wine, Green Venice, Atlantic coast, and island.
Nantes + Brittany Megalith Circuit (800km, 7 days)
Nantes → Vannes (115km west via N165, 1h15; gulf of Morbihan boat circuit) → Carnac (135km; megalith alignments, the most concentrated neolithic standing stones in the world) → Auray overnight → Quiberon Peninsula (25km south of Auray; Belle-Île-en-Mer ferry) → Belle-Île overnight → return to Quiberon → Lorient (50km north) → Concarneau (60km west; walled medieval Ville Close on a tidal island) → Quimper (30km; Breton cathedral and the most Breton city in Brittany) → return east via N165 (185km to Nantes). The southern Brittany megalith and coast circuit from the Loire's western end.
14+ Days
Full Western France Loop (2,200km+, 14-16 days)
Nantes → Loire south bank D723 (Angers, Saumur, Amboise, Chambord; 3 nights) → south to the Dordogne via A20 (Périgueux, Les Eyzies prehistoric caves, Sarlat; 3 nights) → southwest to Bordeaux (2 nights; Médoc wine route, Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat) → north via A10 to La Rochelle and Île de Ré (2 nights) → Marais Poitevin Green Venice (1 night) → north via A83 to Nantes → Noirmoutier (1 night) → Brittany circuit to Quimper (2 nights) → return to Nantes via N165 (185km). The full Atlantic and Loire arc from one depot, covering five distinct landscape types without repeating a road.
Nantes to Bordeaux One-Way: The Atlantic Route (400km, 5-7 days)
Nantes → Noirmoutier (80km south; 1 night) → Les Sables-d'Olonne (105km; 1 night) → Marais Poitevin Green Venice (100km east from Les Sables; 1 night) → La Rochelle (65km; 1 night, old port and fortifications) → Île de Ré (bridge from La Rochelle, free; 1 night) → south via A10 to Bordeaux (180km; drop-off). The cleanest one-way south from Nantes in the Indie network.
Most travellers find 7-9 days ideal for combining one Loire Valley château run with the Atlantic coast. Three to four nights in the Loire alone is the minimum to do it properly; rushing from Angers to Chambord in a single day defeats the purpose of the river road.
Regional fuel notes:

Essential Apps for Your Nantes Campervan Trip
Campground Reservations
Nantes-Camping Le Petit Port: book online at nantes-camping.fr; summer weekends book several weeks ahead. Sandaya Le Fief (Saint-Brevin): book at sandaya.co.uk well ahead for July through August. Huttopia Noirmoutier: book at europe.huttopia.com; summer months book 4-6 weeks ahead. Loire Valley campgrounds near Chambord: book 6-8 weeks ahead for July and August. For municipal campgrounds in smaller Loire and Vendée towns, walk-ins are generally available outside peak season.
Narrow and seasonal: The Île de Noirmoutier coastal lanes and the Brière perimeter roads are 3-3.5m wide in sections; appropriate for campervans up to 7m with care, but larger motorhomes should assess routes via Street View before committing.
Flood risk: The Loire is a managed flood-plain river; after sustained heavy rainfall the D723 south bank road near Montjean-sur-Loire and Saint-Florent-le-Vieil can flood briefly. Check Bison Futé (bison-fute.gouv.fr) before any sustained Loire bank drive in November through March.
Driving Culture
Priority to the right (priorité à droite): At any uncontrolled intersection in France without give-way signage, vehicles entering from your right have absolute priority, even if your road appears to be the main road. This rule applies throughout Loire Valley village crossings and in the Brière perimeter hamlets. It surprises every non-French driver at least once. Learn it before departure.
Roundabouts: Traffic already in the roundabout has priority over entering traffic. This is universal and applied literally across all French roundabouts built after 1983.
Lane discipline: The left lane on French autoroutes is genuinely reserved for overtaking; middle-lane cruising is less common than in the UK and will prompt fast approaches from behind. Stay right on the A11 and A83 except when passing.
Alcohol limit: 0.05% BAC (0.02% BAC for drivers with less than 2 years of licence). First offense DUI fines start at €750 minimum plus mandatory licence suspension. Gendarmerie breathalyzer checkpoints are common on the D751 and D948 toward Noirmoutier on summer weekends and following evening events in the Loire wine towns.
Campervan-Specific
Height: No specific low-clearance issues on the main national roads out of Nantes. Historic city centres (around the Château in Nantes, and in Angers and Tours further east) have low archways on medieval street alignments; navigate with Waze with campervan height entered in preferences and avoid any route that passes through the old town core in a large vehicle.
Length: Campervans up to 7m access all Loire Valley, Atlantic coast, and Brière routes without difficulty. Vehicles over 8m should verify campground maximum lengths (Camping Huttopia Noirmoutier confirms lengths directly; Loire Valley municipal campgrounds vary). The Île de Noirmoutier's back lanes in La Guérinière and L'Épine are the most restrictive in the region.
Propane/LPG: Campingaz cylinder exchange is available at most Leclerc, Carrefour, and Intermarché hypermarkets across Loire-Atlantique. No tunnel restrictions on the A11, A83, or N165 main corridors. Turn propane off at all fuel stops.
Parking: Campervan street parking in central Nantes is not viable for overnight use; Nantes-Camping Le Petit Port is the city base. For day visits to the city, the peripheral Parc-Relais (park-and-ride) sites on the ring road are large enough for standard campervans at €3-5/day and connect to the tram network. The Île de Noirmoutier has designated motorhome service areas and paid parking.
Wildlife: Marsh harriers, grey herons, and white spoonbills cross the D773 through the Brière at dawn and dusk; reduce speed through the marsh perimeter roads between April and June. Wild boar are present in the Vendée forest corridors south of the Loire; most active on forested D-roads after dark. The Loire estuary at Saint-Nazaire has significant seabird activity; the Pont de Saint-Nazaire crossing in autumn migration season (October through November) has gannets, terns, and occasionally skuas visible from the bridge deck.
Parking: €15-40 (Nantes ring road Parc-Relais €3-5/day; Île de Noirmoutier motorhome service area parking; Loire campground fees include site parking)
Total estimates:
Budget: €1,100 — Compact vehicle in shoulder season, all cooking from Leclerc and Marché de Talensac provisioning, Loire-side free aires and municipal campgrounds, Le Voyage à Nantes trail (free), Brière boat trip as the main paid activity, Leclerc fuel throughout.
Mid-range: €2,000 — Mid-size vehicle in early July or September, mix of cooking and 2-3 restaurant meals (La Cigale and La Civelle as the two set pieces), Nantes-Camping for the city night, Huttopia Noirmoutier for 2 nights, Les Machines 3-attraction pass, two Loire château entries, Muscadet domaine purchases in Clisson.
Premium: €3,200 — Large motorhome in August peak season, frequent dining throughout, Sandaya Le Fief for 2 nights and Huttopia Noirmoutier for 2 nights, full Château visits on the Loire circuit, Marais Poitevin guided punt, Les Machines full pass, La Rochelle day including Île de Ré bridge, regional wine purchases.
Western France is cost-competitive for campervan travel by European standards. Campground prices in the Loire Valley and Loire-Atlantique are below Normandy and well below the Côte d'Azur. Provisioning from Leclerc keeps food costs low; the regional markets at Talensac and along the Loire provide quality that costs more in any French city restaurant. The main cost variable is the motorway corridor: routing on the A83 toward La Rochelle and the Île de Ré bridge adds €25-30 in tolls and bridge charges to the southern loop. Taking the scenic D-roads instead costs nothing and adds context the motorway removes.
Nantes → Toulouse (540km, 4h30 via A83 and A10 south): The full southwestern arc: La Rochelle and Île de Ré (natural break point at 160km), continuing south through the Charentes and the Médoc into Bordeaux (3h15), then southeast on the A62 to Toulouse (2h15 from Bordeaux). One of the most complete cross-section runs of Atlantic and southwestern France available in the network.
Nantes → Barcelona (1,100km, allow 3-4 days via A83/A10 south through Bordeaux, then A63 and AP-8 along the Basque coast): Bordeaux is the natural first overnight (3 hours), San Sebastián the second (4 hours from Bordeaux via the Atlantic coast road), Barcelona the destination (3 hours from San Sebastián via AP-7). The Basque coast stretch between Biarritz and San Sebastián is one of the best 60km of road in the network.
Nantes → Porto (1,020km, allow 3-4 days via A83/A10/A63 south along the Atlantic coast, crossing into Portugal via the A1): Bordeaux first overnight, Biarritz or San Sebastián second, then south through Galicia and into northern Portugal. The Galician coast (Costa da Morte, Rías Baixas) adds 100km and two days to the route and is worth every kilometer if time allows.
Nantes → Edinburgh (allow 7-10 days via ferry Roscoff-Plymouth or St Malo-Portsmouth, then north through England): Take the N165 west to Roscoff (3 hours) and cross to Plymouth by Brittany Ferries (6 hours); or north to Saint-Malo (2h30) and cross to Portsmouth (overnight). Continue through Devon and Cornwall, or directly north on the M5/A74 to Edinburgh.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.
