Our Road Trips Itineraries
Porto's position on Portugal's northern coast means you're accessing wine valleys, mountain parks, medieval towns, and hundreds of kilometres of Atlantic coastline. Here's what you can reach:
Costa Verde (Green Coast) - (30-100km north) Atlantic beaches, surf spots, dramatic cliffs:
Here's what sets us apart:
May-June and September-October are ideal. Portugal has Atlantic climate—mild year-round but distinct seasons.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 12-20°C (March cool, May warm)
Conditions: Spring blooms, occasional rain, warming temps
Late spring (May) is excellent. Comfortable temps (16-22°C), Douro Valley vineyards green and flowering, fewer tourists than summer (30% fewer), lower prices (20-30% less), wildflowers in Peneda-Gerês, pleasant hiking weather. But: Atlantic can be cool for beach (15-17°C water), occasional rain (April especially), northern Portugal wetter than south. March-April variable (12-18°C, rainier). Campgrounds opening season (many open April 1).
Best for: Wine region exploration, hiking, avoiding crowds, budget travellers, Douro Valley before summer heat, spring landscapes.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 20-28°C (warm but Atlantic breeze moderates)
Conditions: Dry, stable, long days, peak season
Peak season. Warm beach weather (Atlantic water 16-19°C—refreshing, not Mediterranean warm), long days (sunset 9pm June-July), festivals (São João Festival June 23-24 in Porto—huge celebration, fireworks, sardines, street parties), all services operating. But: July-August crowded at beaches and Douro Valley (book campgrounds 2-3 weeks ahead), Porto's historic centre packed, hottest inland (Douro Valley 30-35°C in August—bring water). Prices peak. Porto São João June 23-24 = city-wide festival (book accommodation months ahead if visiting then). September still warm (22-26°C), fewer crowds after Aug 20, excellent shoulder season.
3 to 5 Days
Douro Valley Circuit (250km, 3-4 days)
Costa Verde & Minho (300km, 4 days)
Peneda-Gerês & Braga (350km, 3-4 days)
Fuel Stations
Average diesel price: €1.50-1.65/L (Portugal mid-range Europe—similar to Spain, cheaper than France)

What's Included
Tolls
See Practical Logistics above. Critical: Understand your hire's toll system before leaving (transponder or post-billing). Unpaid tolls = fines mailed to hire company who charge you + admin fee.
Road Conditions
Highways (A-roads): Excellent, smooth, well-signed. N-roads (national): Good but narrower, winding in mountains, slower. Village streets: Often narrow (single-lane with passing places), cobblestones (calçada portuguesa—slippery when wet), steep hills in Porto/Douro.
Right-Hand Traffic
Drive on right. Priority to right at unmarked intersections (rare).
Roundabouts
Yield to traffic already in circle (left). Multi-lane roundabouts common—stay in your lane, inner lane for turning left/straight, outer for right exits.
Alcohol Limit
0.05% BAC (0.02% for new drivers <3 years). Fines €250-2,500 + licence suspension. Don't drink and drive (even after wine tastings—designate driver or spit tastings).
Campervan-Specific
Portugal is affordable Western Europe (cheaper than France/Germany/Austria, similar to Spain).
Campervan hire: €550-950 (varies by season/vehicle)
Fuel: €120-200 (diesel €1.50-1.65/L, 600-800km typical week, 13-15L/100km = 78-120L)
Tolls: €30-80 (if using A1 to Lisbon €25, A28 coast €8, Douro area minimal, or less if avoiding tolls)
Campgrounds: €140-280 (€20-40/night × 7, Portuguese campgrounds affordable)
Food: €140-350 (cook most meals—restaurants €18-30/person, supermarket groceries €20-30/day for two, markets cheap for produce)
Activities: €80-300 (wine tastings €8-25 each, Douro boat cruise €15-25, museum entries €3-10, many free sights)
Parking: €10-30 (city parking if needed, campgrounds include parking)
Total estimates:
Portugal is excellent value. Wine tastings €8-25 (vs €25-50 France), meals €12-25 (hearty portions), campgrounds €20-40 (clean, good facilities). One of Europe's best value destinations.
Porto → Lisbon (315km, 3 hours via A1) - Capital city, Belém, Sintra, most popular route
Porto → Faro (Algarve) (560km, 5h 30min via A1/A2) - Southern beaches, Lagos, coastal cliffs
Porto → Madrid (Spain) (560km, 5h 30min via A1/A6/A-6) - Spanish capital, cross-border
Porto → Seville (Spain) (660km, 6h 30min via A1/A2/A-49) - Andalusia, flamenco, culture
Lisbon → Porto (reverse, popular for southern entry)
One-way fees vary. Porto-Lisbon route often has minimal fees (€50-100, high demand both directions). Cross-border drop-offs (Madrid, Seville, Santiago) may have fees €150-300.
Porto combines riverside charm (Douro, Ribeira, port wine lodges) with immediate access to Portugal's diverse north, you can sip vintage port in a centuries-old cave in the morning and hike beneath waterfalls in Peneda-Gerês by afternoon. You're not choosing between culture and nature, Porto gives you both, plus easy access to Spain's Galicia region.
Most importantly, Porto's northern position means you can reach the Douro Valley's terraced vineyards in 1.5 hours, Peneda-Gerês's wild mountains in 1.5 hours, or drive south to Lisbon in 3 hours and the Algarve beaches in 5.5 hours for multi-week explorations. One-way hire open routes from Atlantic cliffs to Mediterranean-like southern coasts without backtracking.
Over 15,000 travellers rented from Porto last year, with June-September accounting for 65% of trips. Find your campervan and start planning your Portuguese adventure.
The roads are good—Portugal has improved highways (A-roads, autoestradas) but tolls common. Scenic routes include N222 (Douro), N13 (coastal), mountain roads (narrow, winding). Electronic tolls (Via Verde) on some highways require payment online after travel (hire company provides instructions).
Best for: Beach time, festivals, long days, guaranteed dry weather, all destinations accessible, outdoor dining, coastal exploration.
Fall (September to November)
Temperatures: 18-25°C (Sept), 12-18°C (Oct-Nov)
Conditions: Autumn colors, wine harvest, comfortable temps, rain increases Nov
September is perfect. Still warm (20-25°C), fewer tourists (50% fewer than August), lower prices (30-40% off summer), wine harvest (vindima, late Sept-early Oct in Douro—participate in grape picking, festivals, special atmosphere), autumn colors in vineyards (golden, red), comfortable hiking without summer heat. October good (16-20°C) but rain increases. November gets wetter and cooler (12-16°C, frequent rain)—shoulder season ending.
Best for: Wine harvest experiences (vindima), autumn colors, photography, comfortable temps, fewer crowds, best prices, Douro Valley at peak beauty. Ideal for wine enthusiasts.
Winter (December to February)
Temperatures: 8-15°C (mild by European standards)
Conditions: Wet, cool, quieter
Off-season. Porto has mild winters (rarely below 5°C, no snow in coastal areas) but wet (December-February rainiest months, 120-140mm/month). Campgrounds partially closed (some year-round ones open). Douro Valley quiet, many quintas closed or limited hours. But: Empty tourist sites, rock-bottom prices (50% off summer), Christmas markets (smaller than Central Europe but charming), authentic local experience. If you don't mind rain and cool temps, interesting time. Surfing season (bigger Atlantic swells, wet suit essential).
Best for: Budget travellers, avoiding all crowds, surfing (experienced), authentic local culture. Not ideal for typical sunny road trips.
Most popular months: July, August, September, June (70% of annual hire).

Helpful Apps
Verify before leaving:
Height: Know it (typically 2.8-3.2m). Porto historic centre has low archways (Arco de Vandoma, others)—don't attempt. Highways fine.
Width: 2.3-2.5m typical. Douro wine roads narrow (N222 sections 3-3.5m)—slow down, use pullouts, oncoming traffic cooperates.
Steep hills: Porto has 15-25% grades. Use low gear, handbrake when parking on hills.
Cobblestones: Slippery when wet—drive slow, smooth inputs.
Tolls
Portugal has extensive toll roads (portagens). Two systems:
1. Traditional tolls (barrier tolls): Pay at toll booths (cash or card), major highways (A1 Porto-Lisbon, A2, A3). Clear signs, €2-15 depending on distance.
2. Electronic-only tolls (Via Verde, SCUT): No booths, gantries scan licence plate, bill sent to registered owner. Hire campervans: Company provides transponder (Via Verde device) or post-hire billing (you receive invoice 2-4 weeks later, pay online). ASK RENTAL COMPANY FOR INSTRUCTIONS before leaving.
Electronic toll roads:
Costs: €0.05-0.15/km typical, Porto-Lisbon via A1 ~€20-25 total.
Avoiding tolls: Possible but slower (N-roads, national roads, free but 2x time). N13 coastal road alternative to A28 (scenic but slower).
Speed Limits
Enforcement: Fixed cameras (signed), mobile police, fines €60 (minor, 10-20 mph over) to €2,500 (extreme, 60+ mph over). Moderate enforcement (not as strict as Switzerland but present).
Parking in Cities
Porto historic centre (Ribeira, Baixa): Extremely narrow streets, steep hills, trams, DO NOT drive campervan into centre. Park at campground (Orbitur Angeiras, Camping Madalena), take metro to city (€1.20-2.50, easy, clean, runs 6am-1am).
Blue/green zones: Paid parking (€0.50-2/hour), time limits, residents priority. Red zones: No parking.
Campervans: Use campgrounds or designated campervan parking areas (some towns have free áreas de autocaravanas, check Park4Night).
Wild Camping
Legally grey area. Not explicitly illegal in most places (unlike Spain with heavy fines) but not officially allowed either. Reality: Tolerated in rural areas if discreet, respectful, leave no trace. Avoid: Beaches (fines possible), protected areas, private property, urban areas. Use: Official campgrounds when possible (€15-35/night, good value), designated campervan areas (free or €5-10), or discreet rural spots overnight.
