Our Road Trips Itineraries
Madrid's central location means you can reach Spain's diverse regions—mountains, coast, plains, and neighboring Portugal—without extreme distances. Here's what you can reach:
The roads are excellent. Autopistas (toll highways, AP-prefix) are fast and expensive. Autovías (free highways, A-prefix) are nearly as good and cost nothing. Historic town centres have narrow medieval streets—NOT suitable for campervans. Park outside old quarters and walk in.
Here's what sets us apart:
April-June and September-October are ideal. Madrid has hot summers and cool winters. Spring and fall offer perfect temperatures for sightseeing and driving.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 12-22°C (March), 15-28°C (May)
Rainfall: Moderate (40-50mm/month)
Beautiful season. Wildflowers bloom, countryside is green, comfortable temperatures for walking medieval towns. Easter Week (Semana Santa, late March/early April) brings processions, higher prices, and crowds—book ahead. May is particularly pleasant—warm but not hot, longer days, fewer tourists than summer. Madrid parks (Retiro, Casa de Campo) are lush.
Best for: Historic town exploration, hiking Sierra de Guadarrama, wine region tours, Toledo/Segovia/Ávila day trips, avoiding summer heat, outdoor activities.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 30-38°C, regularly exceeding 40°C July-August
Rainfall: Low (10-15mm/month)
Very hot, especially July-August. Madrid locals flee to coast or mountains in August (many businesses close for holiday). Historic towns like Toledo can be unbearable mid-day (stone streets amplify heat). Best strategy: drive to coast (Valencia, Costa Brava) or northern mountains (Picos de Europa, Pyrenees) where temps are 5-10°C cooler. Long days (sunset 10pm June) extend exploring. Tourist peak June-early September. Campgrounds fill up—book ahead.
Best for: Coastal trips, northern Spain (cooler), late evening city exploring, long daylight hours, beach camping. Not ideal for central plains/historic towns (too hot).
3 to 5 Days
UNESCO Triangle (350km loop, 4 days)
Sierra de Guadarrama & El Escorial (250km, 3 days)
La Mancha Windmills Route (400km round trip, 4 days)
Fuel Stations
Low-cost brands: Ballenoil, Plenoil, Alcampo fuel - 5-10% cheaper, city locations
Average diesel price: €1.45-1.60/L (highway services €0.10 more)
Spanish fuel strategy:
Siesta note: Some rural fuel stations close 2-4pm (siesta). Larger chains and highway services stay open.

Speed Limits
Enforcement: Speed cameras everywhere (fixed and mobile). Fines €100-600 depending on speed. Paid on-the-spot for foreigners or later by mail.
Road Conditions
Excellent: Major highways (autopistas and autovías) are modern, well-maintained.
Historic towns: IMPOSSIBLE for campervans in old quarters. Narrow medieval streets (3-4m wide), stone bollards, pedestrian zones, steep grades. Always park outside and walk.
Mountain roads: Sierra de Guadarrama, routes to Pyrenees—winding, steep in sections. Take it slow (50-70 mph). Spectacular views.
Rural roads: Generally good, occasionally narrow in small villages.
Campervan hire: €700-1,400 (varies by vehicle/season)
Fuel: €180-300 (diesel €1.45-1.60/L, 600-800km typical, 10-12L/100km = 60-96L)
Tolls: €30-80 (depending on routes—use free autovías to save)
Campgrounds: €175-350 (€25-50/night × 7)
Food: €150-350 (groceries vs restaurants, restaurants €15-30/person)
Attractions: €80-200 (museums €10-15 each, El Escorial €12, Toledo Cathedral €12.50)
Parking: €20-50 (historic town parking, €2/hour typical)
Total estimates:
Spain is moderately priced compared to rest of Western Europe—cheaper than France/Germany, more than Portugal/Greece.
Madrid → Barcelona (621km, 6 hours via A-2) - Catalonia, Mediterranean coast
Madrid → Seville (534km, 5h 30min via A-4) - Andalusia, flamenco, Alhambra access
Madrid → Valencia (354km, 3h 30min via A-3) - Mediterranean coast, paella, beaches
Madrid → Bilbao (395km, 4 hours via A-1) - Basque Country, pintxos, Guggenheim
Madrid → Lisbon (626km, 6h 30min via A-5) - Portugal capital, Atlantic coast
One-way fees vary. Often reduced during peak season when vehicle redistribution is needed (e.g., Madrid to Barcelona in summer).
Madrid's geographic centre position means you're equidistant from Spain's diverse regions. Within two hours you can reach five UNESCO World Heritage towns—Toledo's medieval maze, Segovia's Roman aqueduct, Ávila's complete medieval walls, Salamanca's university town, and Cuenca's hanging houses. Extend another two hours and you're on Mediterranean beaches, in Andalusian white villages, or exploring Basque pintxos bars.
Most importantly, Madrid combines world-class culture (Prado, Reina Sofía, Royal Palace) with access to the authentic Spanish countryside that tourists flying into Barcelona or coastal resorts never see. The Castilian plains, wine regions, and mountain villages surrounding Madrid are Spain's historic heartland.
One-way hire mean you can drive to Barcelona along the coast, to Seville through Andalusia, or even to Lisbon in Portugal without backtracking. Over 18,000 travellers rented from Madrid last year. Find your campervan and start planning your Iberian adventure.
Temperatures: 25-30°C (September), 10-17°C (November)
Rainfall: Moderate (30-60mm/month), increasing through November
Excellent season. September is still warm but comfortable (less intense than July-August). Crowds thin after mid-September. October is perfect—20-25°C, clear skies, harvest season (grape harvest in wine regions, mushroom season). La Rioja and Ribera del Duero wine routes are spectacular. November cools down, rain increases, but prices drop 30-40%.
Best for: Wine region tours (harvest season), historic town exploration (comfortable temps), fewer tourists, shoulder season pricing, autumn colors in mountains, mushroom foraging culture.
Winter (December to February)
Temperatures: 5-12°C, occasional snow in Madrid
Rainfall: Moderate (30-40mm/month)
Low season. Madrid can be cold and grey. Sierra de Guadarrama has skiing (Navacerrada, Valdesquí resorts, 60-80km from Madrid). Christmas markets in Plaza Mayor (December). Lowest hire prices (40-50% off peak). Southern Andalusia remains mild (Seville, Granada 10-18°C). Good time for museums, indoor attractions, southern road trips. Some mountain routes may be closed.
Best for: Budget travellers, Christmas markets, skiing nearby, Andalusia trips (milder south), museum-focused visits, avoiding crowds, winter sports.
Most popular months: May, June, September, October (80% of visitors).

Helpful Apps
Roundabouts (rotondas): Very common in Spain. Vehicles in circle have right of way. Inner lane for going more than halfway around, outer lane for first/second exits. Signal when exiting.
Priority to right: At unmarked intersections, vehicle from right has priority (rare but exists in villages).
Alcohol Limit
0.05% BAC (0.03% for drivers with licence <2 years). Fines €500-1,000 + possible licence suspension. Random breath tests common. Spain takes DUI seriously.
Campervan-Specific
Height: Know your height (typically 2.8-3.2m). Some underground parking has 2.0-2.2m limits (avoid). Historic town entries may have low arches—don't attempt anyway.
Width: Medieval streets are 3-5m wide. Your campervan is 2.1-2.3m. Mathematically possible ≠ advisable. Park outside historic centres.
Parking: Blue zone (ORA) spots often have campervan restrictions. Designated campervan parking exists in some towns (Park4Night app). Overnight city parking generally prohibited.
Wild camping: Gray area. Prohibited within 1km of campsites, beaches, urban areas. Tolerated in some rural/mountain areas if discreet and respectful. Use Park4Night for vetted spots. Risk of fines €200-600 in prohibited areas.
Historic centre access: Even if GPS suggests it, DON'T follow into narrow streets. Stone bollards will damage your campervan, narrow passages will trap you. Many emergency towing situations result from tourists ignoring this.
Toll Roads (Autopistas)
AP-prefix roads = TOLL (peaje)
A-prefix roads = FREE (autovía)
Key toll routes from Madrid:
Payment: Cash or card at toll booths. Keep ticket from entry, pay at exit (distance-based). Some sections have electronic tolling (telepeaje lanes—avoid unless you have device).
Saving money: Use free autovías (A-prefix). They're nearly as fast, just 10-20 minutes longer.
Calculate tolls ahead: autopistas.com or viamichelin.com
Weekly tolls Madrid-based trip: €30-80 depending on routes.
ZTL Zones (Limited Traffic Zones)
Madrid Centro (Madrid Central): Low-emission zone covering city centre. Restrictions apply to non-resident vehicles. Campervans should NOT enter (narrow streets anyway). Park at campground, use metro.
Historic town centres: Toledo, Segovia, Ávila, Salamanca have pedestrian zones and narrow streets. DO NOT attempt campervan entry. Park in designated areas outside walls (see campground section for specific parking).
Fines: €90-200 for entering restricted zones.
Siesta Culture
Many businesses close 2-4pm (or 1:30-5pm in summer):
Always open:
Spanish meal times:
Tip: Stock up on groceries/fuel in morning or late afternoon to avoid closures.
Parking
Blue zones (ORA): Paid parking (ticket machine), typically 9am-2pm & 4-8pm Mon-Fri, some Sat. €1-3/hour. Check if campervans allowed (many have height/length limits).
Green zones: Resident parking only. Don't park (€90 fine).
White zones: Free but rare in cities.
Historic centres: Park OUTSIDE and walk in. Campervans cannot navigate medieval streets (too narrow, stone bollards, steep).
Overnight parking: Generally prohibited in cities. Use campgrounds or designated areas (Park4Night app shows spots). Wild camping is legally grey area—tolerated in some rural areas, strictly prohibited near beaches/tourist areas.
