Our Road Trips Itineraries
Cairns' location in Tropical North Queensland gives you access to rainforest, reef, and coastal landscapes that exist nowhere else. Here's what you can reach:
Here's what sets us apart:
Dry season (April-November) is best. Cairns has distinct wet and dry seasons. Dry season offers lower humidity, no cyclones, clearer reef visibility, and accessible roads.
Dry Season (April to November)
Temperatures: 21-29°C, low humidity
Rainfall: Minimal (30-70mm/month)
Peak tourist season. Perfect beach weather, clear skies, excellent reef visibility (20-30m). All roads accessible. Waterfalls are less dramatic (lower water flow) but swimming holes are safe. No marine stingers in southern beaches (though reef tours provide stinger suits year-round). Cassowaries active. Atherton Tablelands at their greenest early dry season (April-June). Expect higher prices and more tourists June-August. Book reef tours and accommodations 2-3 weeks ahead mid-year.
April-May: Shoulder season, waterfalls still flowing from wet season, fewer tourists, 15-20% lower prices.
June-August: Peak season (Australian winter—southerners escape to tropical warmth). Busiest months. Highest prices. Perfect weather (23-26°C, low humidity). Book everything ahead.
September-November: Shoulder season, warming up toward wet season (humidity increases Nov), excellent value, fewer crowds, still great conditions.
Best for: Beach activities, reef tours (best visibility), hiking, waterfalls (safe to swim), road trips (all roads open), wildlife spotting, festivals.
Wet Season (December to March)
Temperatures: 24-32°C, high humidity (70-85%)

Cairns combines tropical convenience with access to two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, within 90 minutes. You're not starting in a remote outback location. Cairns has excellent infrastructure (international airport, full services), and you can be snorkeling coral within an hour or spotting cassowaries in ancient rainforest by afternoon.
Most importantly, Cairns is the gateway to Tropical North Queensland's greatest hits: reef, rainforest, waterfalls, wildlife, and coastal drives that exist nowhere else on Earth. One-way hire mean you can drive the entire Queensland coast to Brisbane without backtracking.
Over 22,000 travellers rented campervans from Cairns last year. Most report it as Australia's ultimate nature-focused road trip. Find your tropical-ready campervan and start planning your reef and rainforest adventure.
December: Transition month, increasing rain, stinger season begins, prices drop.
January-February: Wettest months, highest cyclone risk, cheapest prices, dramatic weather, not ideal for campervan touring.
March: Transitioning to dry season, rain decreasing, still humid, shoulder season pricing.
Best for: Budget travellers, dramatic landscapes, photographers (storm light), locals (southerners avoid wet season), those who don't mind humidity/rain. Not recommended for first-time Cairns visitors.
