Our Road Trips Itineraries
Las Vegas's position in the desert Southwest makes it the ideal hub for iconic national park road trips. Here's what you can reach:
Here's what sets us apart:
March-May and September-November are ideal. Las Vegas has extreme desert climate, scorching summers, mild winters. Spring and fall offer comfortable temps for both city and national park hiking.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 18-27°C (March), 25-35°C (May) in Vegas; cooler in parks
Rainfall: Minimal (10-15mm/month)
Excellent season. Wildflowers bloom in desert (March-April after winter rains—rare but spectacular when it happens), comfortable hiking temps in national parks (15-25°C), Zion/Bryce can still have snow at higher elevations March-early April. Vegas warming up but not brutal yet. May gets hot in Vegas (35°C/95°F) but still manageable in parks. Easter week and Memorial Day weekend (late May) see crowds and price spikes. Popular spring break destination (college crowds mid-March). EDC Las Vegas (Electric Daisy Carnival, typically mid-May) brings 450,000+ attendees over 3 days—book campervan hire 2-3 months ahead, prices spike 30-50%, campgrounds near city fill completely. Coachella (Indio, California, 160km/2 hours west, mid-April, 2 weekends) also draws massive crowds, many use Vegas as base, driving to festival daily or camping nearby.
Best for: National park hiking (comfortable temps), wildflowers (if winter rains occurred), avoiding summer heat, shoulder season pricing (20-30% below summer), fewer crowds than summer, festival experiences (EDC, Coachella proximity).

Speed Limits
Interstates (I-15, I-40): 75 mph (120 mph) rural Nevada/Arizona, 65 mph near cities
US highways: 65-70 mph (105-115 mph)
State highways: 55-65 mph
Residential/town: 25-35 mph
National parks: 25-45 mph (strictly enforced, wildlife)
Enforcement: Nevada Highway Patrol active on I-15. Arizona DPS aggressive on I-40. Speeding tickets $200-400+. Many small towns use speed traps (Mesquite NV, Williams AZ), watch for sudden speed limit drops.
Road Conditions
Excellent: I-15 to Utah, I-40 east, US-93 (Hoover Dam bypass bridge impressive, steep grades after).
Scenic but challenging: Highway 12 (Utah, between Bryce and Capitol Reef—winding, mountain pass), US-89 (Arizona Strip), Zion-Mount Carmel Highway (tunnel has size restrictions—campervans over 11'4" wide or 13'1" tall require ranger escort, $15, one-way traffic).
Remote: Long distances between services. US-89 between Kanab and Page (140km, limited services). Highway 95 north of Vegas (sparse).
Summer: Roads can be extremely hot—tyre blowout risk increases. Check tyre pressure (don't overinflate).
Total estimates:
Las Vegas → Los Angeles (435km, 4 hours via I-15) - SoCal beaches, Hollywood, coastal access
Las Vegas → Phoenix (475km, 5 hours via US-93/US-60) - Arizona, Scottsdale, Sedona base
Las Vegas → San Francisco (900km, 9 hours via I-15/I-580, allow 2-3 days) - Northern California, Bay Area, wine country
Las Vegas → Denver (1,200km, 12 hours, allow 5-7 days via Utah parks) - Rockies, Colorado, multi-state Grand Circle
Las Vegas → Salt Lake City (680km, 6-7 hours via I-15 through St. George/Provo) - Utah access, Wasatch Range
Las Vegas combines world-class entertainment (shows, casinos, dining) with unmatched access to the American Southwest's most iconic landscapes—Zion's towering cliffs in 2.5 hours, the Grand Canyon's vast gorge in 4.5 hours, Death Valley's otherworldly terrain in 2 hours, and Valley of Fire's crimson formations in 1 hour. You're not choosing between city excitement or wilderness, you get both.
Most importantly, Las Vegas's central Southwest position makes it the natural hub for Grand Circle road trips, Utah's Mighty 5 parks, Arizona's red rocks, and Nevada's hidden gems are all within a day's drive. Unlimited kilometres and one-way hire open routes from the Pacific Coast to the Rocky Mountains.
Over 35,000 travellers rented campervans from Las Vegas last year, with March-May and September-October being particularly popular for national park road trips in comfortable weather. Find your campervan and start planning your Southwest adventure.
The roads are excellent. I-15 north to Utah parks is fast, scenic, well-maintained. US-93 southeast to Grand Canyon smooth, desert landscapes. I-40 east (Route 66) historic. Summer heat extreme—drive early morning or evening. Gas stations frequent along I-15 and major routes, sparse in remote areas (Death Valley, between small towns).
Peak tourist season despite heat. Vegas hotels cheap summer (conventions slow down) but brutal heat. National parks extremely hot—Grand Canyon South Rim manageable (elevation helps, 20-30°C), lower elevations (Valley of Fire, Red Rock, Death Valley) dangerously hot (45-50°C/113-122°F). Hiking only early morning (sunrise) or evening. Death Valley closed/not recommended summer. High elevation parks (Bryce Canyon at 2,400m) more comfortable. Long days (sunset 8pm), guaranteed dry weather. Campervan AC essential, generator use mandatory for boondocking. July-August monsoon brings afternoon thunderstorms (brief, intense, flash flood risk in slot canyons). Pools and water activities popular.
Handling Extreme Summer Heat - Essential Guide:
Best for: Experienced desert travellers, early morning/evening activities, high elevation parks (Bryce, North Rim Grand Canyon), budget Vegas hotel rates, long daylight, Lake Mead water activities (boating, kayaking excellent heat escape). Avoid if heat-sensitive—this is extreme heat.
Fall (September to November)
Temperatures: 30-38°C (September), 18-25°C (November)
Rainfall: Minimal (10-15mm/month)
Best overall season. September still hot but manageable, October perfect (25-30°C in Vegas, 15-25°C in parks), November cooling down but pleasant. Crowds thin after Labor Day (early September)—prices drop 25-40%, campgrounds easier to book. Fall colors at higher elevations (Bryce Canyon aspens, Grand Canyon North Rim—both late September-October). Comfortable hiking all day. Clear skies, low humidity. Vegas hotel rates rise September-November (convention season returns). Las Vegas Food & Wine Festival (early-mid October, 4 days) perfect for RVers—combines road trip with culinary experiences, celebrity chef tastings ($75-150 events), wine seminars, Grand Tasting pavilion ($175), held at Caesars Palace. Park campervan at resort, Uber to festival. After Thanksgiving, winter pricing kicks in (lowest of year).
Best for: Ideal weather (neither too hot nor too cold), comfortable hiking all day, fall colors at higher elevations, fewer crowds than summer, shoulder season pricing, best overall conditions for Southwest road trips, Las Vegas Food & Wine Festival (October culinary experience).
Winter (December to February)
Temperatures: 10-15°C (50-60°F) in Vegas, colder in parks
Snowfall: Vegas rare, higher elevation parks significant (Bryce, North Rim)
Off-peak season with significant advantages. Vegas mild and pleasant (10-15°C days, 0-5°C nights), lowest hotel/campervan rates of year (40-60% below summer)—budget travellers can save $500-1,000+ on week-long trip. Empty campgrounds, uncrowded parks offering serene experiences. National parks vary: Grand Canyon South Rim open year-round (snowy, magical with snow-covered rim, far fewer crowds—experience iconic views in solitude, 0-10°C), North Rim closed November-May (snow), Zion accessible but cold (occasional snow dusting cliffs—stunning contrast of red rock and white snow, 0-10°C, popular trails less crowded), Bryce Canyon extremely cold and snowy (-5 to 5°C, hoodoos covered in snow create otherworldly landscape—consider snowshoe hire). Death Valley perfect season (15-20°C days, comfortable hiking, ideal temps for exploring—this is when to visit Death Valley). Holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year's) see price spikes. Occasional winter storms (rain in Vegas, snow in parks). Some park roads close temporarily.
Winter Travel Advantages:
Best for: Budget travellers (lowest prices of year, massive savings), Death Valley (perfect season), uncrowded national parks (Grand Canyon with snow magical), mild Vegas weather, avoiding crowds, experiencing parks in winter beauty. Bring warm gear for parks (layers, winter coat, gloves). Not ideal if you want guaranteed warm weather.
Most popular months: March, April, May, September, October, November (70% of annual hire).

Extended Grand Circle + Colorado (4,500km, 21+ days)
Vegas → Utah parks (Mighty 5, 7-8 days) → Colorado (Mesa Verde, Durango, 2-3 days) → New Mexico (Santa Fe, 2 days) → Monument Valley → Grand Canyon → return to Vegas or drop-off Denver.
Most travellers find 7-10 days ideal for Vegas + 2-4 major parks (Zion + Bryce + Grand Canyon, or Zion + Bryce + Arches/Moab).
Propane Refill Stations
Propane notes: Parks don't have propane—refill in Vegas or major towns (St. George, Flagstaff). Typical campervan tank 20-30 gallons, costs $60-120 to fill from empty. Generator uses propane (or gas, depending on campervan model).
Dump Stations
Helpful Apps
Driving Culture
Lane discipline: Right lane slower, left for passing. I-15 through Utah/Nevada drivers generally respectful.
Trucks: I-15 has heavy truck traffic (California-Utah corridor). Stay alert.
Wildlife: Deer, bighorn sheep, cattle on roads (open range in Nevada—cattle not fenced, can be on highway at night). Dusk/dawn highest risk.
Speed: Nevada/Arizona have high speed limits (75 mph), traffic moves fast on interstates.
Alcohol Limit
0.08% BAC (0.00% for under 21). Nevada DUI fines $1,000-5,000+, jail time possible, tourist destination = no leniency. Arizona similar. Checkpoints common on holiday weekends (New Year's, July 4th).
Campervan-Specific
Height: Know your height (typically 9-11 feet). Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel has 11'4" height limit—taller campervans can't enter park from east (use south entrance via I-15). Check park websites for restrictions.
Length: Know your length. Some park roads/campgrounds restrict length (Zion up to 40ft on main roads, Watchman Campground varies by site, Bryce most sites 25-30ft limit).
Propane: Turn off when refueling. Some tunnels restrict (rare in Southwest).
Generator: National parks restrict hours (usually 8am-10pm, quiet hours 10pm-8am). BLM dispersed camping no restrictions.
Grades: I-15 has steep grades (Virgin River Gorge south of St. George, 7% grades). Use low gears on descents, don't ride brakes (overheat). Brake check areas provided, use them if brakes smell hot.
Tunnel size restrictions: Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel biggest concern. If coming from east, measure campervan carefully or use south entrance.
Southwest is moderately priced, cheaper than California/Bay Area, similar to Arizona. Vegas food/lodging cheap (compared to coastal California), fuel cheaper, but park tours/activities add up.

“Fourth time renting with Indie Campers, we really respect what you are doing and the hard work you put in to keeping these campers running and comfortable. THANKS for another amazing adventure!”
“Overall a good experience. The van was high-quality and spacious enough for 4 people. The service was quick. The only point to mention is that the gray water tank was full, and the fuel and propane were only half-filled. It would have made sense for everything to be clean and fully ready at the start. I still recommend indi campers. ”
“This class C Motorhome is really good. It has all we need. very convenient. The overall process to rent the motorhome with Indie Campers are also good”
