Zion National Park is one of the best places in the US to do a campervan trip because the scenery changes fast, the hikes start early, and lodging in Springdale and inside the park is limited in peak months. You have towering sandstone walls in Zion Canyon, high viewpoints along the Zion Mount Carmel Highway, and quieter corners like Kolob Canyons, all within a relatively compact area.
This page covers the practical details that make or break a campervan trip to Zion: where to pick up your campervan, the best campervan friendly routes, what to do beyond the drives, shuttle rules in Zion Canyon, campervan size restrictions on key roads, campground options, dump stations, and trip planning tips.
Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (main canyon corridor)
Key stops: Zion Canyon Visitor Center area, Zion Lodge area, The Grotto, Temple of Sinawava
Best time: Early morning for fewer lines and cooler temps
Important access note: From March through late November, private vehicles are not allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive because access is by shuttle. You can only drive your own vehicle in the canyon when the shuttle system is not operating.
Zion Mount Carmel Highway (SR 9) from Canyon Junction to the East Entrance
Key stops: Switchbacks above the canyon, Zion Mount Carmel Tunnel, Canyon Overlook Trail parking area, slickrock viewpoints on the east side
Best time: morning for easier parking and less tunnel congestion
Campervan restrictions: Zion has specific size rules for large vehicles on this corridor, including the tunnel and the highway section between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance. Check your exact length, height, and width before committing your itinerary to this route.
Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive (northwest Zion, off I 15)
Key stops: Viewpoints along Kolob Canyons Road, short hikes like Timber Creek Overlook when open
Best time: Late afternoon for light on the cliffs
Why it works for campervans: Less crowded than Zion Canyon and easy to pair with nearby campgrounds outside the park
Kolob Terrace Road toward Lava Point (seasonal and weather dependent)
Key stops: higher elevation viewpoints and quieter forested sections
Best time: summer when heat in the main canyon is intense
Campervan note: roads and parking are tighter up high and services are limited, so this is best with smaller rigs and a full fuel and water plan
Spring (March to May)
Average highs: 66 to 86°F and average lows: 39 to 54°F. This is one of the best seasons for hiking in Zion National Park, with comfortable temperatures for trails like Angels Landing and The Narrows. Expect busy weeks and shuttle season in Zion Canyon.
Summer (June to August)
Average highs: 95 to 100°F and average lows: 63 to 70°F. Summer is peak season for Zion, with long daylight hours but intense heat in Zion Canyon. Campervan travellers should plan early starts, use the shuttle system, and take breaks during midday.
Fall (September to November)
Average highs: 64 to 91°F and average lows: 37 to 61°F. Fall is ideal for a campervan trip to Zion thanks to pleasant hiking weather and reliable access to scenic routes like the Zion Mount Carmel Highway and Kolob Canyons. Crowds remain high, especially in September and October.
Winter (December to February)
Average highs: 54 to 59°F and average lows: 30 to 34°F. Winter is quieter and can be a great time to visit Zion if you want fewer crowds and easier parking. Some trails may have ice, and services are more limited, but the scenery is still impressive.
Campgrounds inside the park
Campervan parks and campgrounds outside the park (good backups)
If you are staying multiple nights, dump station planning matters because shuttle season limits driving in the canyon and you may not want to break camp mid trip.
Inside or at the park entrance area
Near Zion (gateway towns)
Always confirm seasonal hours and fees before you go since policies can change.
Usually no during peak season. From March through late November, access to Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is by shuttle only and private vehicles are allowed only when the shuttle is not operating.
Zion does not typically use a park wide timed entry reservation like some parks. Your main constraints are parking, shuttle access rules in Zion Canyon, and permits for specific hikes.
Yes. Anyone hiking from Scout Lookout to Angels Landing needs a permit, year round.
No permit is required for the popular bottom up day hike. Permits are required for the full top down route and overnight trips.
Start early. You will get cooler temperatures, better parking and shuttle lines, and a safer experience on exposed trails.
Smaller campervans are easier for parking and for routes that include the Zion Mount Carmel Highway. If you are hiring a larger motorhome, plan to base yourself near Springdale and use the shuttle for Zion Canyon.
Yes. Zion has specific size restrictions for large vehicles on this corridor, and they apply beyond just the tunnel. Check the park’s large vehicle rules before you plan to drive it.
Watchman is the most straightforward choice because it is next to the Visitor Center and shuttle, and it offers electric sites plus a dump station at the entrance.
For Watchman, reservations can be made up to six months in advance and sites fill quickly mid March through late November.
South Campground often works on a much shorter booking window, so last minute planning is harder.
You have options at Watchman and South Campground, plus several dump stations in Springdale, Virgin, La Verkin, and nearby towns listed above.
