Our Road Trips Itineraries
Milan's defining geographic advantage is that it sits in the middle of a lake-and-mountain arc that no fixed hotel base can cover efficiently. Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, and Lake Garda form a 200km crescent north and east of the city, each a full day's destination in its own right; the attempt to cover all three from a single city hotel, with transfer costs and booking windows attached to each, adds logistical friction a campervan eliminates entirely. The Como lakeside circuit from Como city to Bellagio and back via Varenna and the eastern shore takes a day of unhurried driving with proper stops at Villa Balbianello, the Sentiero del Viandante viewpoints above Varenna, and a Bellagio waterfront lunch; doing that from a Stresa hotel means a 90-minute positioning drive before you begin and 90 minutes back. A campervan positioned at a campground in Domaso at the lake's northern end is already at the circuit's furthest point with nothing to retrace.
The route that most specifically requires a campervan in this region is the combined Stelvio and Valtellina circuit north of Bormio: the approach road from Bormio to the summit passes through a high alpine valley that has almost no hotel capacity outside Bormio itself, and the summit area at 2,758 metres has nothing approximating overnight accommodation. Arriving at the Stelvio Pass at dawn, before the first motorcyclists and tour groups, requires either a Bormio hotel booked weeks ahead in July and August or a campervan at a valley campground 15km from the approach road. The dawn light on the Ortler glacier from the Edelweissspitze is not something available to day-trippers arriving from Milan after a 2-hour 30-minute morning drive.
The cost argument in this region is consistent and specific: a July hotel night in Bellagio runs €200-400 for a lake-view room, and the most photogenic positions on Como's eastern shore have limited hotel inventory at any price. A lakeside campground pitch in the Domaso area at the northern end of the lake runs €25-45 a night and gives the same lake access for a fraction of the rate. Applied across a 10-night northern Italy circuit combining Como, Maggiore, the Stelvio, and Garda, the accommodation differential is typically worth €1,500-3,000 before counting the self-catering advantage in a region where restaurant pricing in the main lakeside resort towns has risen substantially. For airports: Milan Malpensa (MXP, GPS 45.6306°N, 8.7281°E) sits 48km northwest of Milan's city centre, about 40-50 minutes from the depot, and handles Italy's strongest transatlantic and long-haul network with direct connections from New York (JFK and EWR), Chicago (ORD), Toronto (YYZ), and London (LHR), as well as comprehensive European coverage via Alitalia/ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, and easyJet. Milan Linate (LIN, GPS 45.4483°N, 9.2769°E) is 7km east of the city centre, approximately 15-20 minutes from the depot, and serves primarily short-haul European routes; it is the most convenient airport for travellers arriving from elsewhere in Europe without checked luggage. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY, GPS 45.6739°N, 9.7042°E) is 50km northeast of Milan, approximately 45 minutes from the depot, and carries the strongest budget and low-cost network in the region, with Ryanair and Wizz Air connections from the UK, Ireland, and most of continental Europe.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Milan hire companies:
Unlimited kilometres — Drive the full Lake Como circuit, continue to the Stelvio Pass, loop south to the Cinque Terre, and return to Milan without watching the odometer. Most competitors cap you at 200-250km per day; a single day properly exploring the Como lakeside circuit uses that allowance before you've reached Bellagio.
One-way hire across 70+ locations — Pick up in Milan, drop off in Venice, Florence, Rome, or Naples. No backtracking required across a country where the most rewarding itineraries run north to south rather than in and out of a single city.
24/7 road assistance — Included on every booking. If something goes wrong at 2am on the Stelvio Pass approach in a valley with no cell service, you have a number to call.
Basic Protection Plan included — Covered from day one. Optional upgrades available at booking.
Flexible cancellation — Cancel up to 31 days before pickup without penalty, useful given how substantially Italian lake district demand and pricing shift between peak July and the shoulder seasons.
Book now, pay later — Secure your vehicle today; full payment is not due until closer to departure.
Spring (April through May)
Temperatures: 10-22°C (50-72°F); the lakes warm earlier than the surrounding mountains, which may still have snow above 1,500 metres in April.
Lake Como and Maggiore are at their most photogenic in spring: the Isola Madre botanical gardens on Lake Maggiore peak in May with rhododendrons and azaleas that disappear completely by June; the Villa Carlotta garden on Como blooms through April and May with camellias and wisteria. Campground availability is excellent outside the Easter week, when the lake district fills unexpectedly for a 5-7 day window regardless of calendar date. The Stelvio Pass is closed until mid-to-late June; itineraries targeting the pass need to wait. Water temperatures on the lakes are cool (12-16°C) making this a sightseeing and hiking season rather than a swimming one.
Best for: Villa gardens, lake district sightseeing without summer crowds, and hiking at lower elevations in the national parks; budget-conscious travellers before peak-season pricing kicks in mid-June.
Skip if: The Stelvio Pass or the higher Dolomites routes are the priority; both remain snow-affected through much of May.
Booking note: Campsites available with 2-3 weeks' lead time outside Easter; Sintra palace equivalent here is Cinque Terre, which starts filling its visitor cap from late April onward.
Summer (June through August)
Temperatures: 22-33°C (72-91°F) in the Po Valley and lake district; 8-18°C at the Stelvio Pass summit; afternoon thunderstorms frequent in the Po Valley through July.
3 to 5 Days
Three to five days is enough to cover one lake properly or do a combined two-lake circuit without much time to spare at either. Milan itself deserves a half-day minimum before departure; factor that into shorter trip planning.
The Lake Como Circuit (approx. 270km round trip, 4 days)
Day 1: Milan depot. Provision at the Mercato Centrale or an Esselunga near the A9 on-ramp. Half-day in Milan: Duomo rooftop, Navigli canal aperitivo. Overnight at a campground near Como city.
Day 2: Como → Villa del Balbianello, Lenno (35km via SS340, approximately 50 minutes). Morning at Balbianello by boat from the village dock before 10am. Continue north to Menaggio. Afternoon ferry to Varenna (15 minutes). Walk Varenna's lakeside promenade and the Sentiero del Viandante section above the village. Overnight near Varenna.
Day 3: Varenna → Bellagio (ferry, 10 minutes). Morning in Bellagio; walk the promenade and the stepped lanes off Via Garibaldi. South along the SS583 eastern shore road toward Lecco (50km, approximately 1 hour). Return toward Milan via the A51. Overnight near Milan or return to depot.
Day 4: Return Milan depot.
Lake Maggiore and Borromean Islands (approx. 200km round trip, 3 days)
Day 1: Milan → Stresa (80km via A26, approximately 55 minutes). Afternoon Isola Bella ferry crossing from Stresa Imbarcadero. Overnight near Stresa.
Fuel Stations
ENI/Agip, Bergamo area (near A4 eastbound) — The most reliable chain in Lombardy, with forecourts large enough for campervans and no height restrictions on main road stations. Fill here before heading northeast on the A4 toward Brescia, Verona, or the Camonica Valley approach to the Stelvio.
IP (Italiana Petroli), Como city (near SS36 junction northbound) — The critical fill point before taking the western shore SS340 road north; no fuel for approximately 40km between Argegno and Gravedona once on the western shore circuit.
ENI/Agip, Bormio (GPS approximately 46.4667°N, 10.3667°E) — The mandatory fill before the Stelvio Pass road; no fuel for approximately 48km between Bormio and Prato allo Stelvio over the summit. Fill completely regardless of current tank level.
Q8, Aosta (near the A5 exit, GPS approximately 45.7333°N, 7.3167°E) — The last reliable fill before the 27km SR47 to Cogne and the Gran Paradiso valley; no fuel between Aosta and Cogne.
Tamoil/Shell, La Spezia (near the A12 exit) — Fill before entering the Cinque Terre approach area; no fuel within or adjacent to any of the five village zones.
Italy fuel note: Fuel prices vary by region, with motorway (autostrada) stations charging a premium of approximately €0.15-0.20/litre over comparable roadside stations. Fill on the SS-road network rather than at toll motorway service areas where possible. Average diesel price approximately €1.75-1.90/litre; petrol approximately €1.80-1.95/litre.
LPG/Autogas Refill
Age and Licence Requirements
Minimum hire age: 21 years. Confirm any applicable young driver surcharge (typically levied up to age 25) at the time of booking at indiecampers.com.
EU licence holders: a full EU driving licence is valid in Italy without additional documentation.
International visitors (non-EU): an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended alongside your national licence and enforced more consistently in Italy than in some other European countries; Italian traffic police check hire vehicle documentation at routine stops. Obtain your IDP from your home country's automobile association before departure; it is not available at Italian airports or hire counters.
Credit Card and Deposit
A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pickup. Debit cards and prepaid cards are not accepted. The security deposit is held on the credit card at pickup; the amount varies by vehicle class and selected protection plan. Confirm the exact deposit amount during the booking process at indiecampers.com.
Area B and Area C
Milan operates two overlapping restriction zones. Area B covers approximately 72% of Milan's municipality and bans certain older diesel and petrol vehicles (broadly Euro 4 and below); most modern hire vehicles comply, but confirm your specific vehicle's classification at pickup before planning any route through the urban area. Area C is the congestion charge zone within the Cerchia dei Bastioni (the historic inner ring road), enforced by camera Monday through Friday 7:30am-7:30pm; entering without authorisation results in an automatic fine processed via the hire company. Avoid Area C entirely; peripheral parking and the metro serve every Milan city attraction adequately.
Speed Limits
Motorways (autostrade): 130km/h standard; 110km/h when it is raining or visibility is reduced; campervans over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100km/h on motorways on some sections, confirm at pickup.
Rural roads outside built-up areas: 90km/h standard.
Urban areas: 50km/h standard; 30km/h in designated zones including parts of the Navigli district and some Brera area streets.
Automated average-speed enforcement (Tutor system) operates on extended sections of the A4 and A7; the system calculates average speed between fixed sensors and fines are enforced via the hire company for foreign-registered vehicles.
Road Conditions
A4 (Milan-Brescia-Verona-Venice): well-maintained six-lane motorway, no campervan-specific restrictions. Regularly congested near Milan and Brescia on weekday mornings.
A7 (Milan-Genova): well-maintained, climbs the Apennine pass (Passo dei Giovi, 472 metres) between Novi Ligure and Genova; no specific campervan restrictions but the climb and descent are worth noting for vehicles with heavier loads.
SS36 (Milan-Lecco-Como eastern shore): two-lane with some tunnel sections north of Lecco; generally well-maintained; no campervan-specific restrictions.
SS340 (Como western shore): narrow with tight tunnels between Colonno and Lenno, not recommended for vehicles over 6m.
Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, and Stelvio Circuit (approx. 750km)
Campervan hire: €700-1,800 (compact Adventure to large Comfort category; July and August add 20-30% across all categories; book 3-4 months ahead to lock in lower shoulder-season rates for late June and September)
Fuel: €132-157 (750km at 10L/100km = 75 litres; at approximately €1.76-2.10/litre diesel on motorways and rural roads; fill on rural roads not motorway service areas where possible to stay toward the lower estimate)
LPG/Autogas: €20-40 (one mid-trip refill if needed; fill in Milan before departure toward the lake circuits where GPL availability drops)
Tolls: €50-90 (A9 Milan-Como, A26 Milan-Stresa, A4 Milan-Brescia and return, plus smaller A-road segments; a complete lakes-and-Stelvio circuit accumulates quickly in a higher-category campervan)
Campgrounds: €175-385 (€25-55/night × 7; aree di sosta at the low end €10-15/night with minimal facilities; full-hookup Lake Garda and Como sites at the high end in peak season)
Food: €280-595 (self-catering from Esselunga or Lidl approximately €40-50/day; mixed cooking and restaurant meals including one Trattoria Milanese or Navigli aperitivo evening approximately €75-85/day)
Activities: €40-150 (Borromean Islands ferry approximately €13-18/adult; Brera museum approximately €15/adult; Last Supper ticket approximately €15-20/adult; Cinque Terre Card approximately €15-18/day if included; Stelvio Pass road free; Gran Paradiso National Park entry free)
Parking: €15-50 (day parking at lake towns €3-8/day at designated outer areas; aree di sosta overnight parking included in campground line above)
Milan → Bergamo (55km, approximately 45 minutes via A4) — a short connector pickup for travellers flying into Bergamo Orio al Serio and wanting to position immediately for the eastern Lake Garda approach or the Camonica Valley and Stelvio route.
Milan → Venice (270km, approximately 2 hours 30 minutes via A4) — the full eastern northern Italy traverse: Lake Garda (130km from Milan, 1 hour 15 minutes), Verona's Roman amphitheatre (160km, 1 hour 30 minutes), and the Veneto lowlands before the lagoon city. One of the most content-rich one-way routes in the Italian network.
Milan → Bologna (200km, approximately 1 hour 45 minutes via A1) — the Emilia-Romagna food circuit connector; Parma (Parmigiano-Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma DOP country) and Modena (balsamic vinegar and Lambrusco) are each within 30 minutes of the A1, making this route worth taking slowly.
Milan → Florence (300km, approximately 2 hours 45 minutes via A1) — the natural northern lakes-to-Tuscany one-way, connecting the Como or Maggiore circuit to the Chianti wine road, Siena, and the Val d'Orcia without a return transfer.
Milan → Pisa (280km, approximately 2 hours 40 minutes via A1 and A15) — the Tuscan coast alternative to Florence, connecting northern Italy to the Cinque Terre (a second visit from the south) and the Tuscan Riviera.
Milan → Rome (580km, approximately 5 hours 30 minutes via A1) — the full Italian spine; the practical route breaks this into two or three days via Bologna, Florence, and the Tuscan hill towns rather than driving it directly.
Milan → Naples (780km, approximately 7 hours via A1) — the grand traverse of the Italian peninsula, covering the northern lakes, Tuscany, Rome, and ending at the Amalfi Coast gateway in a single one-way itinerary.
Milan's position at the hub of northern Italy's road network places four fundamentally different landscapes within two hours in four different directions: the Swiss Alps and Engadin valley to the north via the A9; the Ligurian coast and French Riviera to the southwest via the A7 and A10; the Adriatic lowlands and Venetian lagoon to the east via the A4; and the Valle d'Aosta's glaciated peaks to the northwest via the A5. No other northern Italy depot covers this compass range simultaneously. Bergamo is better positioned for the eastern Dolomites approach; Venice for the Croatian border connection; but neither gives you Lake Maggiore's Borromean Islands, the western Cinque Terre approach from La Spezia, and the Gran Paradiso National Park ibex country all within a single itinerary that starts and ends without crossing a sea crossing or a major mountain range.
The singular starting experience from Milan is the drive north on the SS36 toward Lake Como in the early morning before the lake traffic builds: the road cuts through the granite hillside above Lecco in a series of short tunnels, and the moment the lake first appears between the rocks as the SS342 junction opens up is the reward for leaving the depot before 7am. The Como lake surface at dawn in late June reflects the snow on the Grigna massif (2,410 metres) on the eastern shore; by 10am the tourist ferries are running and the light has changed entirely. You only get that particular window if you start from Milan and are willing to leave early.
The send-off: eat a panzerotto from Luini (Via S. Radegonda 16, open from approximately 10am, queue moves fast) with a macchiato from the nearest bar, the standard Milanese working-morning breakfast format, before collecting the vehicle. If your booking allows a late morning pickup, the Duomo rooftop at 9am before the full tourist crowd arrives gives a view north toward the Alps that physically sets the direction of travel before you leave the city. Take the SS36 northbound at the first clear opportunity and the lake is less than an hour away.
Best for: Families with school-age children; full simultaneous access to lakes, alpine passes, and Cinque Terre; the Italian F1 Grand Prix at Monza in September sits just outside this window.
Skip if: Avoiding the mid-August Ferragosto compression on lake district roads and campsites is a priority; early June and the first two weeks of September offer nearly identical conditions with 30-40% less competition.
Booking note: Lake Como and Lake Garda campgrounds require 2-3 months' advance booking for July and August; the two weeks around Ferragosto require the earliest booking of the year.
Autumn (September through October)
Temperatures: 10-22°C (50-72°F); the Stelvio Pass typically remains open through September and into mid-October; confirm current status before departure.
The Italian F1 Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza runs in September (usually the first or second weekend), bringing a different kind of visitor to the region entirely; campsites near Monza book out completely for the race weekend. The Valtellina valley north of Como produces Nebbiolo-based reds (Sassella, Grumello, Inferno) that are at their harvest-season best at cellar doors in September and October. Lake Garda water temperatures remain comfortable for swimming through September. The Stelvio Pass in clear October light produces the sharpest glacier views of the year.
Best for: Photographers targeting the Stelvio and Dolomites; wine harvest tourism in the Valtellina; the Monza F1 weekend for motorsport visitors; anyone wanting full route access with substantially reduced midsummer crowds.
Skip if: Swimming in the lakes is the priority; water temperatures drop after early October.
Booking note: 4-6 weeks ahead is typically sufficient outside the F1 Grand Prix race weekend, which requires booking a full year ahead for pitches near the Autodromo.
Winter (November through March)
Temperatures: 0-10°C (32-50°F); lake district frost common December through February; snow on motorways above 500m possible November through March.
The Stelvio Pass closes completely in late October and does not reopen until mid-June at the earliest. Most lake campgrounds reduce services dramatically or close for the season from November. Ski season runs December through March in Livigno (accessible via the SS300 from Bormio, 30km), the Valtellina resorts, and the Valle d'Aosta's skiing areas near Aosta. Milan functions as a full winter city; the Duomo rooftop in December and the fashion district around Via della Spiga carry no seasonal closure.
Best for: Ski-adjacent trips based in Bormio or Livigno; Milan city sightseeing without crowds; travellers extending toward the Valle d'Aosta ski resorts from the west.
Skip if: A campground-based lake or mountain itinerary is the plan; most of the lake district campground infrastructure closes for the winter season.
The most popular months for Milan campervan hire are June, July, and August.
Day 3: Cannobio → return to Milan via A26 (90km, approximately 1 hour).
7 to 10 Days
Seven to ten days allows a proper two-lake circuit plus either the Stelvio Pass or the Gran Paradiso and Valle d'Aosta, with enough time at each to justify the driving distance.
Lakes and Stelvio Circuit (approx. 750km, 8 days)
Day 1: Milan → Lake Como northern shore via Lecco and the SS583 (90km, approximately 1 hour 15 minutes). Arrive Domaso area. Overnight near Domaso.
Day 2: Lake Como northern circuit. Drive the western shore SS340 south to Villa del Balbianello and Bellagio ferry, then return north via Varenna. Overnight near Bellagio or Domaso.
Day 3: Domaso → Lake Maggiore, Stresa (120km via SS340 to Como and A9/A26, approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). Borromean Islands afternoon. Overnight near Stresa.
Day 4: Stresa → Bormio via A26, A4 to Brescia, SS42 Camonica Valley, SS38 (approximately 280km, 3 hours). Overnight near Bormio.
Day 5: Bormio → Stelvio Pass summit and back (48km round trip via SP38, half-day). Continue toward Livigno or remain in Bormio. Overnight near Bormio.
Day 6: Bormio → Lake Garda, Desenzano (200km via SS38, A4, approximately 2 hours). Afternoon at Sirmione's Roman ruins, the Grotte di Catullo. Overnight near Sirmione.
Day 7: Lake Garda eastern shore, north to Riva del Garda (80km via SS249, approximately 2 hours). Mountain backdrop changes completely at the northern end; the Ponale road above Riva is one of the most dramatic short drives in the region. Overnight near Riva or Desenzano.
Day 8: Riva del Garda → Milan (170km via A22 and A4, approximately 1 hour 45 minutes). Return to depot.
Lakes and Cinque Terre Circuit (approx. 700km, 8 days)
Day 1: Milan → Lake Como (as above). Overnight near Como.
Day 2: Lake Como circuit day. Overnight near Bellagio.
Day 3: Bellagio → Lake Maggiore, Stresa (120km). Borromean Islands. Overnight near Stresa.
Day 4: Stresa → Genova (150km via A26, approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). Italian Riviera: San Remo, Alassio, or Portofino optional. Overnight near La Spezia.
Day 5: La Spezia → Cinque Terre (park near La Spezia, train to Monterosso). Full day across the five villages via the Sentiero Azzurro. Overnight near La Spezia.
Day 6: La Spezia → Cinque Terre second day (ferry circuit of all five villages). Overnight near La Spezia.
Day 7: La Spezia → Milan via A12 and A7 (190km, approximately 2 hours). Optional Portofino and the Tigullio Gulf detour.
Day 8: Return to Milan depot.
14 Days or More
One-Way: Milan to Rome via Florence and the Tuscan Hill Towns (approx. 900km, 14 days)

Days 7-9: Bologna → Florence depot (100km, 1 hour via A1). Tuscany hill towns circuit: Siena, Chianti wine road, Val d'Orcia. Overnight in Tuscany.
Days 10-12: Tuscany → Rome (280km via A1, approximately 3 hours). Historic centre and the Castelli Romani. Drop vehicle at Rome depot or continue to Naples.
Days 13-14: Optional extension toward Naples and the Amalfi Coast via the A1 (220km, 2 hours 30 minutes from Rome).
One-way Milan to Venice (270km), Bologna (200km), Florence (300km), Rome (580km), or Naples (780km) available with the Indie Campers Italian network; confirm one-way fees and availability at indiecampers.com.
ENI/Agip stations on the A4 motorway service areas (Brescia, Verona approaches) — Most ENI motorway stations carry GPL; these are the best-supplied stops on the eastern part of any northern Italy circuit.
GPL availability drops sharply north of Como, in the Camonica Valley beyond Darfo Boario Terme, and in the Valle d'Aosta beyond Aosta. Fill in Milan or on the A4 before heading north toward any lake or mountain circuit.
Average LPG price in Italy: approximately €0.70-0.85/litre (2026 estimate).
Dump Stations (Aree di Sosta per Camper)
Northern Italy has a well-developed network of dedicated motorhome service areas (aree di sosta) distributed across the lake district and along major touring routes.
Area di Sosta di Como waterfront (GPS approximately 45.8147°N, 9.0758°E) — water, grey water disposal, and cassette service; available to non-registered visitors for a small fee.
Area di Sosta Verbania, Lake Maggiore (GPS approximately 45.9167°N, 8.5500°E) — full services at the lake's western shore, well-positioned for the Maggiore northern shore circuit.
Area di Sosta Desenzano del Garda (GPS approximately 45.4667°N, 10.5333°E) — Lake Garda southern shore, adjacent to the town waterfront.
Use Park4Night to locate additional service areas along your specific route; northern Italy's aree di sosta network is dense and regularly updated on the app.
Essential Apps
Telepass app — Manages Italian motorway toll payments electronically across the A4, A7, A26, A9, and A22 networks; register at pickup to avoid per-passage administration surcharges from unregistered passes through electronic toll gates.
Park4Night — Locates official aree di sosta, campgrounds, and legal overnight motorhome positions throughout northern Italy; essential given the lake district's mix of formal campgrounds and informal motorhome areas.
Parco Cinque Terre app (or parcocinqueterre.it) — For trail access booking and current trail status; the Cinque Terre trail access cap fills digitally and cannot be resolved at the trailhead.
ARPA Lombardia app — Northern Italy's regional environmental agency publishes air quality and weather alerts, particularly useful for Po Valley summer thunderstorm timing and Stelvio Pass weather forecasts.
Trenitalia app — For Cinque Terre inter-village train connections from La Spezia, and for any rail supplements to the lake district villages that are more efficiently reached by train than by road.

On the Sirmione peninsula with direct lake frontage and access to the Grotte di Catullo Roman ruins and Sirmione's thermal springs; one of the most sought-after pitches on the entire Garda lake circuit. Book 2-3 months ahead for July and August.
Camping Santa Caterina Valfurva — near Bormio, Stelvio approach (GPS approximately 46.4167°N, 10.4833°E, €20-35/night, approximately 220km from Milan). The most practical base for an early-morning Stelvio Pass departure; positioned 25km from the Stelvio Pass road foot, in the Val Furva below the Forni glacier access road.
Camping Lo Stambecco — Cogne, Gran Paradiso National Park (GPS approximately 45.6067°N, 7.3567°E, €18-32/night, approximately 180km from Milan via A4/A5). The primary base for the Gran Paradiso Valnontey valley circuit, walking distance from the Cogne village centre and the SR47 trailhead parking. Basic services; book 3-4 weeks ahead for July and August.
Camping Aqua e Vento — near La Spezia, Cinque Terre approach (GPS approximately 44.1050°N, 9.8167°E, €22-40/night, approximately 190km from Milan via A7/A12). The operational base for the Cinque Terre train circuit from La Spezia Centrale; no vehicle access to the five villages means a La Spezia campground is the only practical overnight option for the national park visit.
National Park and Attraction Passes
Italy has no unified national park pass; entry to Gran Paradiso, Stelvio, and the Cinque Terre National Parks is free at the gate (Cinque Terre hiking trail access requires the separate Cinque Terre Card, approximately €7.50-18.50/day, purchasable at parcocinqueterre.it). The Milan Card offers discounted or free entry to some city museums; calculate against your specific itinerary before purchasing.
Reservation Systems
Book campsites through individual campground websites, the Camping.it directory (Italy's primary campsite database), or Park4Night for aree di sosta. Lake Como and Lake Garda campgrounds for July and August: book 2-3 months ahead, or simultaneously with your vehicle reservation.
Cinque Terre Card and trail access: book at parcocinqueterre.it before departure for any June-September visit.
Cenacolo Vinciano (Last Supper): book at vivaticket.com as early as possible; slots open 90 days in advance and fill within hours for July and August dates.
Italian Grand Prix at Monza: book tickets at formula1.com or monzanet.it as soon as the race date is confirmed for the relevant year; circuit campsite simultaneously.
Toll Transponder
Confirm at pickup whether a Telepass transponder is fitted and how toll charges are handled. If not fitted, carry cash and a credit card for barrier toll stations; the electronic-only lanes on some stretches of the A4 and A7 cannot be used without a transponder.
SR47 (Aosta-Cogne): moderate mountain road, manageable for campervans up to 8m.
Check road closure status for alpine passes at autostrade.it (motorways) and viamichelin.com (mountain passes) before departure on any pass-road itinerary.
Driving Culture
Italy drives on the right. Northern Italian motorway driving is characterized by strict lane discipline in the left lane (used exclusively for overtaking and immediately vacated afterward), which is enforced more consistently in Lombardy and the north than further south. Merging etiquette on motorway entries follows a zipper system that is broadly respected; the Tangenziale ring roads near Milan are an exception where assertive merging is the norm. Roundabouts give priority to traffic already inside. Horn use in the city is common and generally non-aggressive in intent.
Campervan-Specific Notes
Height: no general height restriction on the Italian autostrada network; specific car park entries in historic centre periphery areas (Sirmione, Bellagio, some Como lakeside car parks) carry 2m-2.4m restrictions; confirm before entering any covered or underground parking. Use the CamperPark app or Park4Night to identify campervan-suitable parking at each destination.
Length restrictions: noted above for the SS340 Como western shore. The Cinque Terre villages are inaccessible to any vehicle regardless of size. Stelvio Pass accessible up to approximately 8m.
ZTL zones: present in virtually every historic town and city centre in northern Italy, including Como, Sirmione, Verona, Bergamo's Città Alta, and all five Cinque Terre villages. Camera-enforced with no grace period; confirm ZTL boundaries before approaching any historic centre.
Wildlife: deer crossings common on the SS36 north of Lecco and the SS42 Camonica Valley; ibex occasionally cross the SP38 Stelvio Pass road above Bormio, particularly at dawn; reduce speed in mountain valley sections at dawn and dusk.
Legal Notes
Blood alcohol limit: 0.5g/L (0.05%) for general drivers; 0.0g/L for drivers with less than three years' driving experience. First-offense penalties for exceeding 0.5g/L: fine of €543-2,170 plus licence suspension of 3-6 months; higher readings carry criminal prosecution and possible vehicle confiscation.
Mobile phone use while driving: prohibited without hands-free equipment; fines apply and enforcement is active in Lombard urban areas.
Seatbelts: mandatory for all occupants in all seats.
Compulsory equipment: warning triangle and high-visibility vest required in the vehicle at all times.
Practical Logistics
Tolls
Italian motorways (autostrade) are predominantly tolled via barrier stations operated primarily by Autostrade per l'Italia and regional operators. Campervans are typically classified in a higher toll category than standard cars, increasing costs by approximately 30-50% on a per-kilometre basis. The principal toll routes from Milan are: the A4 east toward Brescia, Verona, and Venice; the A4 west toward Turin; the A7 south toward Genova; the A8/A9 north toward Como and Switzerland; the A26 northwest toward Lake Maggiore; and the A22 Brenner motorway south from Verona. A 7-day northern Italy circuit covering all three lakes and the Stelvio approach can accumulate €60-100 in tolls depending on routing.
Tolls are paid at barrier stations by credit or debit card, cash, or via a Telepass transponder for faster passage through dedicated lanes. Confirm at pickup whether a Telepass tag is fitted to the vehicle and how toll charges are handled; unregistered passage through electronic-only lanes (where no cashier is available) results in an invoice sent via the hire company with an administrative surcharge.
Traffic
Milan's Tangenziale Est (A51, encircling the eastern side of the city) and Tangenziale Ovest (A50, western ring) are the most consistently congested ring roads in northern Italy, running at or near capacity from 7:00-9:30am and 4:30-7:30pm on weekdays. Depart north on the A9 toward Como, or northeast on the A4 toward Bergamo, before 7:00am or after 9:30am on any weekday to avoid adding 45-90 minutes to the first day's drive. The SS36 from Lecco to Colico on the Como eastern shore is heavily used by local commuters on weekday mornings; allow extra time if heading north via this route before 9:00am in summer.
Getting from the Airport
Milan Malpensa (MXP): GPS 45.6306°N, 8.7281°E. 48km northwest of Milan, approximately 40-50 minutes from the depot by road via the A8/SS336. Taxi or rideshare to the depot costs approximately €70-90 and takes 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. The Malpensa Express train from Terminal 1 to Milan Centrale (€13, approximately 50 minutes) is the fastest public connection to the city. Road travellers arriving at Malpensa for an early-morning pickup should note that the A8/SS336 approach to Milan can be slow during peak hours; plan a direct taxi or pre-booked transfer if collecting the vehicle the same day as arrival.
Milan Linate (LIN): GPS 45.4483°N, 9.2769°E. 7km east of Milan city centre, approximately 15-20 minutes from the depot by car. Taxi to the depot approximately €20-30. The Linate shuttle bus (Line 73) runs to San Babila metro station (approx. €1.50), from where the city is accessible. The most straightforward airport for a same-day vehicle pickup given proximity.
Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY): GPS 45.6739°N, 9.7042°E. 50km northeast of Milan, approximately 45-55 minutes from the depot by road via the A4. Taxi to the Milan depot approximately €60-80. The Autostradale coach service runs between Bergamo airport and Milano Centrale (€6, approximately 50 minutes) for travellers without heavy luggage. A dedicated transfer or taxi is the most practical option for same-day vehicle pickup with luggage.
Budget (per couple, 7 days, vehicle hire not included): approximately €900-1,100 — compact vehicle, all self-catering from Lidl and Esselunga, aree di sosta and lower-cost campgrounds, free activities (Stelvio Pass, Gran Paradiso, Navigli walk, Cinque Terre ferry rather than trail access)
Mid-range: approximately €1,500-2,000 — mid-size vehicle, mix of cooking and restaurant meals including one Trattoria Milanese dinner and Navigli aperitivo, mid-price lake campgrounds with hookups, Borromean Islands ferry and Brera museum included
Premium: approximately €2,800-3,800 — large motorhome, frequent dining including Trattoria Milanese and Mercato Centrale, full-hookup lake sites throughout, all major attraction entries, Last Supper included, Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza if dates align
Milan sits at the mid-to-upper range of the Indie Campers Italian network for overall trip cost, primarily because the lake district campgrounds, particularly on Como and Garda, carry July-August pricing that rivals coastal Tuscany. The clearest cost lever is season: a September trip captures identical lake access and the Stelvio Pass at 20-30% lower campground and hire rates, adds the F1 Grand Prix at Monza as a bonus, and removes the Ferragosto crowd pressure. The Stelvio and Gran Paradiso extensions are where trip costs drop most sharply: both parks are free, the mountain valley campgrounds are €15-25 a night versus €35-55 at the main lake sites, and the driving distances from Como or Maggiore are reasonable day additions rather than full-day transfers.
Milan → Nice, France (330km, approximately 3 hours 30 minutes via A26 and the A10 Autostrada dei Fiori through the Italian Riviera towns of San Remo and Ventimiglia) — a cross-border extension connecting the Italian network to the French Riviera and the Indie Campers French depot network; confirm cross-border terms at indiecampers.com.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.
