Campervan and Motorhome Hire in Bergamo

Bergamo sits at the precise geological boundary where the Po Plain ends and the Prealpi Bergamasche begin, which means the city's northern edge looks directly up a continuous elevation gain from 240 metres at the depot to 2,916 metres at the Pizzo del Diavolo di Tenda on the Orobie watershed, all within 30km in a straight line. Val Brembana, the valley running north along the Brembo river from the city's outskirts to the Pizzo dei Tre Signori ridge, begins at 5km from the historic centre via the SS470; San Pellegrino Terme, the Belle Époque thermal resort town where the mineral water bearing the same name has been bottled at its source since 1899 and whose Grand Hotel and Casino buildings represent the most intact late-19th-century thermal resort architecture in northern Lombardy, is 25km north via the SS470, about 35 minutes. Val Taleggio, the hidden lateral valley above the SS470 reached via the SP1 from Sottochiesa where the Taleggio DOP cheese has been produced in mountain caves since the medieval period, is approximately 40km from the depot and 1 hour from the historic centre. Lake Iseo (Lago d'Iseo), the least internationally known of Lombardy's major lakes and the one with the most structurally unusual feature — Monte Isola, a 4.6km² island at the lake's centre rising 600 metres above the water surface, the largest inhabited lake island in Europe by both area and resident population and entirely car-free — is 30km west via the SS42, about 35 minutes. What most visitors miss without a campervan: the Val Taleggio cheese producers operate farm-gate sales from their rifugi on the Taleggio plateau that require a vehicle from the valley base and are available only during the June through September alpine grazing season; the experience of buying a wheel of Taleggio directly from the shepherd-producer at 1,100 metres, with the Orobie peaks visible above the plateau edge, belongs exclusively to travellers who have driven up rather than taken any public transport from Bergamo.

Expand the radius and the full range of the northern Italian Alpine network opens from Bergamo in four compass directions simultaneously. West on the SS42 and A4, Franciacorta, the DOCG sparkling wine zone between Lake Iseo's southern shore and Brescia where Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, and Pinot Bianco are vinified in the méthode champenoise to produce Italy's only DOCG Champagne-method wine, is 40km and about 45 minutes, with cellar doors at Berlucchi, Ca' del Bosco, and Bellavista open year-round. Lake Como (GPS 45.9833°N, 9.2667°E), the deepest lake in Italy at 425 metres, is 50km northwest via the SS36 from Lecco, about 50 minutes; Bellagio at the junction of the two Como branches is 65km and about 1 hour 15 minutes via the lakeside SP72. Val Camonica, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 as Italy's first UNESCO cultural designation, where over 300,000 prehistoric rock engravings spanning from approximately 8,000 BC through the Roman period make it the largest concentration of prehistoric rock art in Europe, is 75km north via the SS42, about 1 hour 10 minutes to the Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri di Naquane at Capo di Ponte. Valtellina, the valley of Nebbiolo vine terraces running east-west along the Adda river with its Valtellina Superiore DOCG sub-zones at Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella, is 100km north via the SS36 and SS38, about 1 hour 30 minutes to Sondrio; from Sondrio, the SP29 reaches Bormio and the eastern approach to the Passo dello Stelvio (GPS 46.5258°N, 10.4531°E, 2,758 metres, 48 hairpin bends) in a further 55km and 1 hour 15 minutes. Brescia, 50km east via the A4, holds the Capitolium temple complex and the Museo di Santa Giulia, a UNESCO World Heritage site covering Brescia's Roman, Lombard, and medieval layers in a former Benedictine monastery whose mosaics and the 1st-century BC gilded Winged Victory bronze constitute the most significant Roman archaeological collection in northern Italy; Venice is 250km east via the A4, approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.

Bergamo's Città Alta (Upper Town, GPS 45.7064°N, 9.6651°E) earns a half-day before departure and repays it in a specific register: this is not a scenic hilltop village but a functioning city of 8,000 residents within 6km of Venetian walls (Mura Veneziane, built 1561-1588 by the Republic of Venice, UNESCO World Heritage Site 2017 as part of the network of Venetian defensive works) that enclose a medieval urban structure whose street layout, piazzas, and buildings have changed relatively little since the 17th century. Access from the Città Bassa (Lower Town) is via the Funicolare Città Bassa (GPS 45.6981°N, 9.6678°E, approximately €1.40 each way, operating approximately 7am to midnight), depositing at the Colle Aperto square; the Via Gombito leads 5 minutes to the Piazza Vecchia. The Campanone tower (54 metres, entry approximately €5/adult) gives a view north across the entire Orobie ridge that makes the Alps' proximity to the city immediately legible; the Cappella Colleoni (GPS 45.7064°N, 9.6672°E, free entry, adjacent to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore), a funerary chapel for the Venetian condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni built by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo between 1470 and 1476, has a polychrome marble façade with sculptural ornament at a density that makes it the most concentrated piece of Renaissance decorative architecture in Lombardy. The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore itself (GPS 45.7064°N, 9.6672°E, Romanesque, 1137 AD, free entry) has a 17th-century intarsia choir by Lorenzo Lotto and Giovanni Francesco Capoferri, 52 biblical scenes in inlaid wood perspective completed over 30 years between 1524 and 1555 and the most technically ambitious intarsia programme in any northern Italian church. Buy a packet of casoncelli (the Bergamasco filled pasta: large half-moon shapes filled with sausage, mostaccino biscuit crumbs, aged cheese, and breadcrumbs, made by the delicatessens along the Via Gombito and sold fresh for campsite cooking), a wedge of Formai de Mut dell'Alta Val Brembana DOP stagionato from the cheese shop at the Piazza Vecchia end, and a bottle of Moscato di Scanzo (DOCG, produced from the Moscato di Scanzo grape on approximately 30 hectares in Scanzorosciate, 5km south of Bergamo, the smallest DOCG in Italy by production area and one of the most intensely flavoured sweet red wines in the entire Italian classification system) from the Enoteca Zanini on Via Gombito. Then take the funicular down to the Città Bassa, collect the vehicle, and take the SS470 north into the Val Brembana.

Top National Parks and Scenic Drives Near Bergamo

Parco Regionale delle Orobie Bergamasche and the Val Brembana

The Parco Regionale delle Orobie Bergamasche covers 94,000 hectares of the Bergamo Alps north of the city, from the Val Brembana watershed in the west to the Val Seriana divide in the east, with the Orobie ridge marking the provincial boundary between Bergamo and Sondrio at altitudes between 2,000 and 2,916 metres (Pizzo del Diavolo di Tenda, the highest Orobie peak). The park boundary begins approximately 20km from the Bergamo city centre; the Val Brembana approach via the SS470 reaches San Pellegrino Terme (GPS 45.8333°N, 9.6667°E, 25km, 35 minutes) and continues to Piazza Brembana (55km, 1 hour 10 minutes) and the Foppolo ski area (75km, 1 hour 30 minutes, 1,500 metres on the western Orobie ridge). The defining road trip detour in the entire Val Brembana is the SP1 from Sottochiesa to Val Taleggio (GPS 45.9167°N, 9.5833°E, approximately 15km from the SS470 junction, 30 minutes on a narrow mountain road): a lateral valley rising from 600 metres at the junction to over 1,100 metres on the Taleggio plateau, accessible only by this single road, with six or seven Taleggio DOP producers operating direct farm sales from their rifugi during the summer grazing season from June through September. The Taleggio DOP designation covers a specific territory including this valley and adjacent Valsassina; the soft-washed-rind cheese whose surface is brine-washed during ripening in the valley's natural caves (grotte) has been produced here since at least the 10th century, with the oldest documented commercial sale record dating to a 1200 AD Milan market transaction.

Trail 1: CAI Trail 101, Piazza Brembana to the Rifugio Longo at Passo di Corna Piana (GPS 46.0000°N, 9.7333°E, 7km one way from the Piazza Brembana valley road head, approximately 3.5 hours ascent, strenuous) — from the Piazza Brembana car park (GPS approximately 45.9833°N, 9.7167°E), the trail ascends through larch forest and alpine meadow to the Passo di Corna Piana at 2,160 metres on the Orobie watershed ridge; the view north toward the Valtellina and the Swiss Alps and south toward the entire Val Brembana and the Po Plain extending to Milan is the clearest north-south panorama accessible on foot from a Bergamo-area trailhead. The Rifugio Longo at the pass provides lunch and overnight accommodation; book ahead at the CAI Bergamo section website for July and August.

Trail 2: Val Taleggio plateau circuit and Taleggio farm visit (GPS 45.9167°N, 9.5833°E, 6km circuit from the Taleggio plateau upper parking area via the SP1, approximately 2.5 hours, easy) — the flat plateau above 1,000 metres is a working alpine pasture with the Orobie peaks on three sides and the valley drop to the south; the marked path connects the plateau farms, several of which have a handwritten sign at the gate advertising Taleggio fresco or stagionato direct sale. The rifugio at the plateau's northern end (Rifugio Casera Taleggio, approximately GPS 45.9333°N, 9.5667°E) serves lunch prepared with the valley's own cheese, butter, and polenta from June through September.

Campervan logistics: the SS470 from Bergamo to San Pellegrino Terme is a well-maintained two-lane road with no campervan restrictions; north of San Pellegrino toward Piazza Brembana the road narrows in gorge sections and is best suited to campervans up to 7.5m. The SP1 to Val Taleggio is a narrow mountain road suited to compact campervans (up to approximately 6m); larger vehicles should park at the Sottochiesa junction (GPS 45.8900°N, 9.5917°E) on the SS470 and drive the valley in a smaller hire vehicle, or accept that some of the upper plateau is not accessible. No fuel above San Pellegrino Terme on the SS470; fill before heading north. Cell coverage patchy above 900 metres on the lateral SP valleys; download offline maps at San Pellegrino before heading into the upper Brembana. Best season: June through September for the Val Taleggio farm sales and the full CAI trail network; October for the Orobie beech forest colour at 800-1,200 metres; February and March for the Foppolo ski area at the valley head.

Lago d'Iseo, Monte Isola, and the Franciacorta DOCG

30km west of Bergamo via the SS42 to Iseo town (GPS 45.6597°N, 10.0508°E), approximately 35 minutes. Lake Iseo is the fourth largest lake in Lombardy and the most overlooked relative to its landscape quality: 25km long, 5km wide, enclosed between Monte Isola at its centre and the Lombardy foothills on its western shore, with water visibility exceeding 8 metres in spring maintained by the clean Oglio river inflow from Val Camonica at Pisogne. Monte Isola (GPS 45.7167°N, 10.0583°E) is the defining geographic object of the lake: a 4.6km² island rising 600 metres above the water surface, with 1,800 permanent residents, nine villages connected by a single perimeter road, 16km of lakefront walking path, and a complete absence of private cars — the only motorised vehicles on the island are those of residents and service providers. The ferry from Sulzano on the eastern shore (GPS 45.7000°N, 10.0667°E) crosses in 5 minutes, approximately €2.50 per person each way. The Franciacorta DOCG zone begins immediately south of Lake Iseo's southern shore, covering approximately 200km² of glacially deposited moraine terrain between Corte Franca and Brescia; Franciacorta DOCG is produced in the méthode champenoise from Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, and Pinot Bianco with a minimum secondary fermentation period of 18 months on the lees for non-vintage Brut (60 months for vintage riserva), awarded DOCG status in 1995 and the only Italian sparkling wine to have achieved this classification on the basis of method rather than variety.

Feature 1: Monte Isola full perimeter circuit (GPS 45.7167°N, 10.0583°E, 16km from Peschiera Maraglio ferry landing, approximately 4 hours, easy) — the island circuit passes the fishing villages of Sensole and Carzano and climbs to Siviano (the island's principal village at 200 metres, with a view across the full lake extent toward the Val Camonica Alps at the northern end) before descending back to the ferry; the Santuario della Madonna della Ceriola at the island summit (600 metres, 2 hours return from Siviano on a separate marked path) gives the complete panorama of Lake Iseo, the Franciacorta morainic hills to the south, and the Adamello massif to the north. Lovere on the northern tip of the lake (GPS 45.8167°N, 10.0667°E, 30 minutes by ferry from Monte Isola) holds the Galleria dell'Accademia Tadini, a lakefront museum founded 1828 with works by Canova, Tiepolo, and Bellini that is one of the most overlooked small art collections in northern Italy; the lakefront position makes it a logical 45-minute stop on the northern Lake Iseo circuit.

Feature 2: Franciacorta cellar door circuit (GPS approximately 45.6167°N, 10.0167°E, self-guided driving circuit approximately 45km through the Erbusco-Borgonato-Corte Franca-Adro zone, half-day with 2-3 tasting stops) — the Strada del Franciacorta wine route connects 30+ cellar doors in a compact glacial moraine landscape where the road passes directly between vine parcels and producer estates; the three most historically significant stops are Berlucchi at Borgonato (GPS 45.6167°N, 10.0167°E, the house where Guido Berlucchi and winemaker Franco Ziliani first applied the méthode champenoise in the zone in 1961, producing the first Franciacorta bottle), Ca' del Bosco at Erbusco (GPS 45.6333°N, 10.0167°E, one of Italy's most technically referenced sparkling wine producers), and Ferghettina at Adro (GPS 45.6333°N, 9.9667°E) for the artisan-scale contrast. Most producers offer designated campsite parking for motorhomes on estate grounds with prior booking; the Berlucchi estate has a visitor area open to campervan guests during tasting hours.

Campervan logistics: the SS42 from Bergamo to Iseo is a well-maintained national road with no campervan restrictions; the SS42 continues north along the Val Camonica and is the same road for both the Lake Iseo and the Naquane circuits. The Lake Iseo eastern shore road (SP510) from Lovere to Iseo is two-lane and manageable for all vehicle sizes through the main road; it narrows to single-lane through the village centres of Sale Marasino and Marone. Monte Isola ferry from Sulzano does not carry vehicles; park in the designated Sulzano lakefront car park (GPS 45.7000°N, 10.0667°E, open surface, no height restriction) and cross on foot or hire bicycle. Franciacorta road circuit is on provincial roads suitable for campervans of all sizes; all estate car parks are open surface without height barriers. Best season: May and June for the Franciacorta landscape before harvest with maximum cellar door availability; September for the vendemmia visits and Monte Isola without August crowds; July and August for full lake beach access and Monte Isola walk warmth.

Val Camonica and the Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri

75km north of Bergamo via the SS42 through Iseo and Pisogne to Capo di Ponte (GPS 46.0167°N, 10.3167°E), approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. Val Camonica's UNESCO designation in 1979, Italy's first World Heritage site, covers eight separate rock engraving sites within a valley 70km long; the total documented figure count of over 300,000 individual engravings across approximately 140 sites spans from the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition around 8,000 BC through the Roman period ending approximately AD 1-50, when the Camunni people who had maintained the engraving tradition for 8,000 years were incorporated into the Roman provincial administration. The engravings were incised into the Permian metamorphic rock surfaces (locally called sass) polished smooth by the Oglio glacier's retreat 12,000-10,000 years ago, and successive cultures reused the same surfaces over millennia: on a single boulder at Naquane it is possible to trace four or five distinct cultural periods in overlapping engraving sequences from the early anthropomorphic symbols of the Neolithic through the Bronze Age warrior and deer compositions to the Iron Age topographic maps and Roman-period inscriptions. The Bedolina boulder (GPS 46.0167°N, 10.3167°E), within the Naquane park, carries what is identified as the oldest surviving topographic map in Europe: a Bronze Age field-and-path representation of the surrounding landscape from approximately 1200 BC, showing fields, buildings, and paths in a spatial composition that is recognisable as a map to a contemporary viewer.

Feature 1: Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri di Naquane (GPS 46.0178°N, 10.3186°E, entry approximately €5/adult, Tuesday through Sunday 8:30am-6:30pm in summer; confirm at archeocamuni.it) — Rock 1 (Grande Rupe), a 75-metre long polished rock surface carrying over 1,000 individual engraved figures, is the park's centrepiece and the single richest engraved surface in Val Camonica; the park's walking circuit (approximately 2km, 1.5 hours, easy terrain with some steps) passes 104 engraved rocks in chronological sequence. The park guide (available at the entrance in Italian and English, approximately €5) identifies the engraving period and thematic content of each major rock; without it, the visual complexity of the overlaid sequences on the larger rocks is difficult to decode.

Feature 2: Parco Archeologico Nazionale dei Massi di Cemmo (GPS 46.0167°N, 10.3167°E, 2km south of Naquane, entry approximately €5/adult or combined ticket with Naquane approximately €8/adult) — the two Massi di Cemmo, large boulders from approximately 3000-2200 BC (Early Bronze Age), carry the earliest-period large figurative engravings in the valley, including ceremonial deer with elaborate antlers and geometric compositions in the Beaker culture style. The Cemmo site has significantly fewer visitors than Naquane and represents the clearest concentration of the earliest-period engraving programme; seen after Naquane, it provides the oldest chronological endpoint in the 8,000-year sequence.

Campervan logistics: the SS42 from Iseo north through Pisogne and the entire Val Camonica to Capo di Ponte is one of the primary truck routes between Lombardy and the Alpine passes; well-maintained, two-lane, no campervan restrictions, but heavy goods traffic on weekday mornings. The Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri car park at Naquane (GPS approximately 46.0178°N, 10.3186°E) is open surface with no height restriction; a designated motorhome area adjacent to the main car park. No fuel between Pisogne and Edolo that is not roadside-station quality; fill in Iseo or Pisogne before the upper valley. Best season: April through October for the archaeological sites; spring and autumn light (before 10am and after 4pm) produces the most legible engraving detail on the rock surfaces; summer overhead glare flattens the shallow incision depth and reduces the visibility of the less deeply cut engravings.

Lago di Como and the Lario Triangle

50km northwest of Bergamo via the A4 to the SS36 at Lecco (GPS 45.8564°N, 9.3978°E), approximately 50 minutes to the Lecco waterfront; 65km to Bellagio (GPS 45.9861°N, 9.2594°E) via the lakeside SP72, approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Lake Como is the deepest lake in Italy at 425 metres and the most dramatically enclosed by alpine topography: the valley walls above Menaggio and Varenna rise directly from the lake surface to over 1,200 metres with minimal flat ground between, producing the specific combination of water, cliff, and sub-Mediterranean vegetation that made the Lario a destination for Stendhal, Flaubert, Liszt, and Verdi. The Lecco branch of the lake, running southeast from Bellagio to Lecco, is the least commercially developed Como arm and the one whose lakeside road (the SP72 from Lecco to Varenna, 25km, approximately 40 minutes) passes through the most intact sequence of the original 19th-century villa gardens and fishing villages with minimal tourist infrastructure between them.

Feature 1: Varenna and the lakeside walk (GPS 46.0069°N, 9.2858°E, accessible via the SP72 from Lecco, 25km from Lecco, 35 minutes) — Varenna is accessible only by the SP72 single-lane road or by passenger ferry from Bellagio (7 minutes, approximately €5 each way; navigazionelaghi.it). Its coloured houses built directly above the lake level, the two villa gardens (Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi, both with lakefront positions and botanical collections, entry approximately €7-9/adult each), and the absence of any vehicle access beyond the single lakeside parking area give the village its character as the most isolated major Como destination relative to its visual prominence. The Varenna-Bellagio ferry circuit (park at Varenna, ferry to Bellagio for the morning, return by ferry) avoids backtracking on the single-lane SP72 while covering both villages.

Feature 2: Villa del Balbianello, Lenno (GPS 45.9650°N, 9.2000°E, accessible by boat from Lenno waterfront or on foot via a 10-minute path from the Lenno parking area; garden entry approximately €12/adult; full villa with guided tour approximately €22/adult; confirm at fondoambiente.it) — built at the tip of a wooded promontory on the western Como shore by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini in 1787 and acquired by the Italian mountaineer Guido Monzino in 1974, the villa occupies the most dramatically positioned garden site on the lake: its terraced loggia faces across the full width of the Como central branch to the Larian Alps at a precise angle that frames the landscape as a composed view. The filming locations include Naboo scenes in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) and the Casino Royale convalescence sequence (2006), which have made the building the most internationally recognised Como property.

Campervan logistics: the A4 from Bergamo to the SS36 Lecco junction carries a toll (approximately €2.50); the SS36 from Lecco to Colico is a divided expressway with no campervan restrictions. The SP72 lakeside road from Lecco to Varenna is single-lane through village centres; suited to campervans up to approximately 6m between Mandello del Lario and Varenna. Vehicles over 7m should approach Bellagio from the SS340 Regina on the western shore via Como, which is more consistently two-lane. Varenna village car park (GPS approximately 46.0069°N, 9.2858°E) and the Bellagio outer parking below the town are both open surface without height restrictions. Campgrounds available on the Lecco lake approach between Abbadia Lariana and Mandello del Lario. Best season: May and June for the villa gardens at peak flowering; September and October for the Larian Alps autumn colour above the lake; November through February for the lake without any tourist pressure at its lowest pricing.

Valtellina and the Passo dello Stelvio

100km north of Bergamo to Sondrio (GPS 46.1678°N, 9.8711°E) via the A4 to the SS36 at Lecco and then north on the SS36 to Colico and east on the SS38 along the Valtellina, approximately 1 hour 30 minutes; 165km to Bormio (GPS 46.4681°N, 10.3711°E) via the same route continued east on the SS38, approximately 2 hours 15 minutes; a further 22km on the SP29 from Bormio to the Passo dello Stelvio summit (GPS 46.5258°N, 10.4531°E, 2,758 metres, 48 hairpin bends), approximately 45 minutes. The Valtellina is an east-west alpine valley 100km long running along the Adda river between Colico and the Swiss border near Tirano; its south-facing granite terraces at 300-700 metres carry Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) vines in the Valtellina Superiore DOCG zone, producing in the four sub-zones of Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella a mineral, high-acid Nebbiolo wine that represents the most extreme northern altitude expression of the variety in Italy. The terraces are so steep that mechanical working is impossible; a cable-railway system (monorail) mounted on the terrace walls is used to transport harvested grapes and equipment up and down the granite faces, a technique unique to this valley.

Feature 1: Passo dello Stelvio eastern ramp, Bormio to the summit (GPS 46.5258°N, 10.4531°E, 22km on the SP29 from Bormio, approximately 45 minutes ascending; 48 hairpin bends numbered on the road surface, maximum gradient 14%, summit 2,758 metres) — one of the three greatest alpine road ascents in Europe, the Stelvio's eastern ramp has its 48 hairpin bends visible simultaneously from any viewpoint above approximately bend 20, a spectacle of engineering that photographers attempt from every altitude on the approach. The pass runs through the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio (Italy's largest national park at 130,000 hectares); the summit commands views north into Switzerland's Engadine valley and south over the Ortler massif (Ortler peak, 3,905 metres, immediately above). The pass is typically open from late May through October or November depending on snow clearance; confirm current opening status at provinciasondrio.it or stelviopass.com before planning the ascent.

Feature 2: Sassella sub-zone terrace walk and Castel Grumello (GPS approximately 46.1667°N, 9.9333°E, 3km circuit from the Sondrio riverfront along the Sassella terrace path, approximately 2 hours, easy) — the walking path through the Sassella sub-zone vineyards above Sondrio passes Castel Grumello (14th century, GPS approximately 46.1667°N, 9.9333°E), a partially ruined medieval castle standing in the midst of the working Grumello vineyard; the castle is open for independent access with vineyard-path walking and provides the most specifically contextualised Valtellina wine landscape view. The Cantina Nino Negri at Chiuro (GPS approximately 46.1333°N, 9.9500°E, one of the valley's reference producers, visits by appointment at ninonegri.it) is 15 minutes south of Sondrio on the SS38.

Campervan logistics: the SS36 from Lecco to Colico is a divided expressway; the SS38 from Colico to Sondrio, Tirano, and Bormio is a two-lane national road with no campervan restrictions and manageable for all vehicle sizes. The SP29 from Bormio to the Passo dello Stelvio is a two-lane mountain road; compact campervans manage the full 48-bend ascent but require care at the tightest hairpins (minimum turning radius approximately 8 metres at the most acute bends). Vehicles over 8m should stop at Bormio and use a smaller vehicle or hire transport for the summit. No fuel above Bormio on the SP29; fill in Bormio before the ascent. The summit car park (GPS 46.5258°N, 10.4531°E) is a large open surface area; overnight parking is possible in summer but summit temperatures drop below 5°C even in July. Best season: late June through September for the pass (confirm opening date); early July for the summit before mid-summer crowds; August for maximum daylight and the Ortler massif views at their clearest.

Val Seriana, the Cascate del Serio, and the Passo della Presolana

35km northeast of Bergamo via the SP671 to Clusone (GPS 45.8833°N, 9.9500°E), approximately 40 minutes; 65km to Valbondione (GPS 46.0000°N, 9.9500°E), approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. Val Seriana runs northeast from Bergamo along the Serio river through Clusone and Valbondione to the Orobie watershed; it is the less visited of the two major Bergamo alpine valleys and the one with a specific event-dependent spectacle unavailable anywhere else in Italy. The Cascate del Serio (GPS 46.0000°N, 9.9500°E), the highest waterfall in Italy when water is released, descend approximately 315 metres in three drops from the Barbellino hydroelectric dam above Valbondione on specific dates only: typically 4-6 Sundays per year from July through early September, when the dam operators release water for public viewing. Outside these release dates the rock face above the valley is dry. A campervan base at the Valbondione campground the night before a release date is the primary logistical position for this event; confirm the current year's release schedule at the Comune di Valbondione website before planning the visit specifically around the falls.

Feature 1: Cascate del Serio release day approach from Valbondione (GPS 46.0000°N, 9.9500°E, 4km return from the Valbondione car park to the falls base, approximately 2.5 hours total, easy to moderate on valley trail) — the trail follows the Serio river north through the Orobie valley floor; on release days the sound of the falls is audible from below before the three-drop cascade is visible above the valley curve. The first drop (approximately 150 metres) is visible from 2km away on release; the full 315-metre combined height becomes apparent only from the base of the first drop. Release dates are on Sunday mornings; arrive at the trailhead by 9am to walk in before the full Bergamo visitor volume arrives from the SS470.

Feature 2: Passo della Presolana and the Presolana massif (GPS 45.8833°N, 9.9833°E, 45km from Bergamo via the SP671 and SP294, approximately 55 minutes) — the Presolana pass at 1,297 metres sits below the most dramatic rock wall in the Bergamo Prealps: the Presolana massif, a 5km-long white limestone ridge with its highest point at 2,521 metres, faces south and is visible from the Po Plain on clear days as a white line above the Clusone hills. The Presolana ski area operates from December through March; in summer the pass is the trailhead for the CAI route to the Rifugio Albani (GPS approximately 45.9000°N, 9.9833°E, 2.5 hours from the pass) and the start of the ridge scramble routes on the Presolana's south face. The drive on the SP294 from Clusone to the pass through the upper Seriana valley is one of the most visually direct approaches to the Bergamo Alps within 1 hour of the city.

Campervan logistics: the SP671 from Bergamo to Clusone is a well-maintained two-lane road manageable for all vehicle sizes; the SP294 from Clusone to Valbondione narrows significantly in the upper gorge sections and is best suited to campervans up to approximately 7m. The Valbondione car park (GPS approximately 46.0000°N, 9.9500°E) accommodates motorhomes with overnight stays; fill fuel in Clusone, the last reliable station before Valbondione. The Presolana pass car park (GPS approximately 45.8833°N, 9.9833°E) is open surface with no height restriction. Best season: July through September for the Cascate del Serio release days (confirm dates before departure); December through March for the Presolana ski area; October for the beech forest colour in the upper Val Seriana above Clusone.
