Begin your Italian Renaissance journey with a campervan hire in Florence and explore the rolling hills, medieval towns, and artistic treasures of central Italy. Drive through Tuscany's cypress-lined roads toward Siena and San Gimignano's towers, head north to the marble mountains of Carrara and the Cinque Terre's coastal villages, or venture south through Umbria's hilltop towns and vineyard valleys. Choose from Indie Campers' California, Active, or Comfort range, all with unlimited kilometres, flexible one-way options, 24/7 online support, and extras like kitchen kits, outdoor furniture, or wine coolers. Backed by a Europe-wide fleet and 4.8-star-rated service, Indie Campers makes exploring Italy simple, comfortable, and unforgettable.
Our Road Trips Itineraries
Florence's geographic position in the Arno valley gives campervan travellers immediate access to experiences that no public transport connection replicates. The SS222 Chiantigiana begins at the city's southern edge and runs directly through 12 Chianti Classico DOCG communes, none of which has a direct rail connection from Florence. Val d'Orcia villages like Monticchiello and La Foce sit entirely off the rail and regional bus network. The Eremo di Camaldoli in the Foreste Casentinesi is reachable only by private vehicle on the SP67. Maremma beaches at Marina di Alberese have no practical public connection from Florence. In each case, the campervan is not just convenient. It is the only realistic vehicle for the itinerary.
The route experience changes fundamentally with a campervan. The Chianti circuit from the city outskirts to Greve to Castelnuovo Berardenga and back to Siena covers approximately 130-160 km of wine-road driving: lunch from a vineyard estate shop, an afternoon at a winery cantina, and a campsite pitch under Siena's city walls for the evening. Then the Val d'Orcia loop continues south from Siena: the SS2 Cassia through Buonconvento, the SP14 near La Foce with the cypress-lined avenue at sunrise, a night at an agriturismo campsite near Pienza with the smell of sheep-milk cheese production coming through the van windows. This loop totals approximately 350-400 km and takes three to four days at a reasonable pace. No hotel booking, no luggage transfer, no shuttling between accommodation and trailhead.
Airport logistics for Florence pickups follow two practical options. Florence Airport, officially Amerigo Vespucci International (FLR, GPS 43.8100°N, 11.2051°E), sits approximately 7 km northwest of the city centre and 10-15 km from most depot locations in the Scandicci/Campi Bisenzio area. A taxi from FLR to the Campi Bisenzio depot area costs approximately €25-35 and takes 15-25 minutes depending on A11 traffic. The Sita Urban bus T2 runs from FLR to Piazza Santa Maria Novella in the city centre (approximately €1.70, 20 minutes), from where a taxi to the depot takes a further 20-30 minutes. Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA, GPS 43.6839°N, 10.3950°E), 80 km west, is a frequent low-cost carrier destination. From PSA, the Pisamover shuttle (€5, 5 minutes) connects to Pisa Centrale train station, and Trenitalia or Frecciargento services run to Florence Santa Maria Novella in approximately 50-60 minutes (€9-15). A taxi from PSA directly to a Florence depot costs approximately €90-120 and takes 55-70 minutes via the A11.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Florence hire companies:
Unlimited kilometres, with no daily cap. Most competitors cap driving at 200-250 km per day. The Chianti to Val d'Orcia to Maremma coast circuit covers approximately 400-500 km over a week. The Florence to Cinque Terre return via the coast route exceeds 450 km. Indie Campers imposes no per-kilometre penalty on any of these distances.
One-way hire across 70+ European locations. Pick up in Florence and drop off in Rome (278 km south), Venice (257 km northeast), Bologna (105 km north), or Siena (68 km southwest). The itinerary is dictated by your route, not by the need to return the vehicle to the starting point.
24/7 road assistance, included on every booking. The Val d'Orcia secondary roads and the Casentinesi forest access tracks are remote. A tyre issue on the SP14 near La Foce at 9 pm is a different situation with assistance included than without it.
Basic Protection Plan, included as standard. Optional upgrade plans are available at booking for additional excess reduction. Review the options before departure.
Flexible cancellation up to 31 days before pickup, no penalty. Tuscany's spring shoulder season can produce heavy rainfall across the Chianti and Apennine areas. If conditions change or plans shift, the cancellation window is generous enough to protect most itinerary changes.
Book now, pay later. Full payment is not required at booking. This matters particularly for travellers planning Florence itineraries around specific seasonal events, such as Calcio Storico in June or the grape harvest in September and October, where early booking secures availability without requiring full payment months in advance.
Vehicle categories matched to Tuscany's road conditions: Adventure suits couples comfortable with the SR222's narrow bends and the Chianti SP road network. California suits two people who want a compact footprint for Siena's outer car parks and San Gimignano's approach road. Active suits families covering a full Tuscany circuit. Comfort suits larger groups willing to stay on main roads and serviced campgrounds.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures range from 10-20°C (50-68°F) in March, climbing to 16-24°C (61-75°F) by May. The Chianti vineyards are green and flowering, the Val d'Orcia wheat fields glow bright green, and the Maremma scrub carries yellow broom across the hillsides. March rains can make strade bianche in Chianti slippery, so large motorhomes should confirm road conditions before turning off the SS222 onto unpaved estate tracks. Easter Sunday in Florence means the Scoppio del Carro at Piazza del Duomo: arrive by 10am to secure a position and expect the surrounding streets to fill rapidly. Campgrounds open from late March (Siena Colleverde opens in March), with most sites quiet enough to book only a few days ahead.
Best for: wildflowers, low crowds, full vineyard access without summer heat.
Skip if: you need guaranteed dry weather for gravel-road drives in the Val d'Orcia.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures in Florence reach 28-36°C (82-97°F) in July and August, making the city centre uncomfortable in the midday hours. The A1 through Florence is Italy's busiest motorway corridor and reaches its worst congestion between late June and mid-August, particularly on Friday evenings northbound and Sunday evenings southbound. Leave for the Chianti or Casentino before 8am to clear the city before traffic builds. Late June brings Calcio Storico Fiorentino to Piazza Santa Croce: three matches across three Sundays, tickets approximately €30-50, and the most specifically Florentine sporting spectacle of the year. July and August bring the Estate Fiesolana concerts to the Roman theatre in Fiesole (8 km northeast of Florence): outdoor classical music and dance with tickets at approximately €15-40. ZTL enforcement in Siena's centro storico is strictest in summer; the whole historic centre is pedestrianised and fines are automated by camera. Campgrounds fill weeks ahead in July and August; book six to eight weeks in advance for Camping Michelangelo and Panoramico Fiesole.
3 to 5 Days
Route A: Florence and the SR222 Chiantigiana (approx. 250 km total)
Day 1: Pick up the vehicle from the depot near Campi Bisenzio or Scandicci (10-15 km from Florence). Drive to Camping Michelangelo (Viale Michelangelo 80, 10 km from depot via SS67 and Viale dei Colli, GPS 43.7554°N, 11.2673°E). Walk to Piazzale Michelangelo for the city panorama at sunset. Pre-book the Uffizi online for the following morning.
Day 2: Visit Uffizi Gallery (pre-booking essential, 3 hours minimum). Lunch at Trattoria Mario on Via Rosina (cash only, arrive by noon). Afternoon at the Baptistery of San Giovanni and the Duomo exterior. Return to Camping Michelangelo. 5 km driving.
Day 3: Depart south on SR222 to Greve in Chianti (30 km, 45 minutes). Walk the triangular Piazza Matteotti, taste at the Enoteca del Gallo Nero, and buy a bottle of Chianti Classico for the road. Continue SR222 to Panzano in Chianti (10 km, 15 minutes): stop at the panoramic viewpoint just north of the village (GPS 43.5512°N, 11.3281°E). Continue to Camping Il Poggetto near Tavarnelle Val di Pesa (GPS approximately 43.5500°N, 11.1833°E, approximately 20 km via SR222 and SP16). 60 km total.
Day 4: Drive SR222 south to Siena (45 km, 50 minutes). Park at Parcheggio Il Campo or Parcheggio Ravacciano outside the ZTL. Walk to Piazza del Campo and the Siena Duomo (pre-book online, approximately €8). Afternoon at the Pinacoteca Nazionale. Overnight at Camping Siena Colleverde (Strada di Scacciapensieri 47, GPS 43.3297°N, 11.3464°E, 2 km from the historic centre). 50 km.
Day 5: Return to Florence via the SGC FI-SI (68 km, 1 hour, toll-free). Drop vehicle. Total trip distance: approximately 230-250 km.
Fuel Stations
Italian diesel averages approximately €1.78-1.95/L at roadside stations; motorway Autogrill service areas run approximately €0.15-0.20/L above that. Fill at roadside stations rather than motorway services wherever the route allows.
ENI Autogrill Firenze Nord (A1, GPS approximately 43.8300°N, 11.1800°E): The last full-service station before the A1 climbs into the Apennine tunnels toward Bologna. Fill here before any northbound journey; the next serviced stop is approximately 40 km into the mountain corridor.
Q8 at Greve in Chianti (GPS approximately 43.5852°N, 11.3162°E, on the SP49 at the town entrance): Fill here before turning south on the SR222 toward Castelnuovo Berardenga and Siena. The SR222 has no fuel between Greve and Siena (approximately 45 km). No fuel is available inside the Siena ZTL or centro storico; the nearest Siena fuel is on Via Massetana Romana (GPS approximately 43.3074°N, 11.3180°E), outside the ZTL perimeter.
ENI on Via Senese approaching SGC FI-SI (GPS approximately 43.7290°N, 11.2140°E, Florence south): Useful before heading south on the toll-free superstrada. Avoids motorway pricing at the SGC's limited service points. On the Val d'Orcia secondary roads (SP14, SP53, SP88), there is no fuel at all. Fill the tank at Buonconvento (SS2, GPS approximately 43.1371°N, 11.5154°E) before exploring any Val d'Orcia side road.
Autogrill Valdichiana Est (A1, GPS approximately 43.2700°N, 11.8400°E): The standard stop for travellers connecting between Florence and Rome or heading toward the Maremma via the A1/SGC junction at Siena. Motorway diesel pricing applies.
LPG/Autogas (GPL)
Minimum hire age is 21. All drivers must present a valid driving licence at pickup; international visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. A credit card in the primary driver's name is required for the security deposit hold at pickup; debit cards are not accepted for this purpose.
ZTL fines in Florence and Siena work through an automated process: the camera reads the vehicle plate, records the violation, and issues a fine to the registered vehicle owner (the hire company), which then forwards the driver's details and the charge to the driver's home address. Processing time is typically 30-90 days after the violation. Fines range from €80 to €330 per violation, with a 30% surcharge added if unpaid within 60 days.
Confirm at pickup that the vehicle's Telepass transponder is active and correctly assigned to your booking. A malfunctioning or absent transponder will trigger a missed-toll notification at every A1 barrier, resulting in fines sent post-trip.
Italy has no national park entry pass equivalent to the US America the Beautiful pass. Individual site fees apply: the Parco della Maremma charges approximately €10 per vehicle entry; the Foreste Casentinesi has free road access but charges at specific visitor facilities.
Use the individual campground website for the most current availability, Camping.it for broader Italian campground inventory, and Park4Night for informal aree di sosta and agriturismo camping. In July and August, the Florence campgrounds and Siena Colleverde fill weeks ahead; book before finalising your departure date.
Strade bianche (white gravel roads) are a feature of the Chianti and Val d'Orcia landscape. Standard campervans handle compacted strade bianche in dry conditions without difficulty. In wet weather, the gravel surface becomes slick; large motorhomes above 7.5 metres should avoid these roads after rainfall. The SP14 near La Foce includes a gravel section of approximately 4 km that is photogenic in dry weather and genuinely slippery after rain.
Speed Limits
Autostrada (A1, A11): 130 km/h for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes in good conditions; 110 km/h in rain. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes: 100 km/h maximum on motorways. SR222 Chiantigiana (regional road): 90 km/h on open rural sections, 50 km/h through village centres (Greve, Panzano, Gaiole). SGC FI-SI superstrada: 110 km/h. Urban areas: 50 km/h, with 30 km/h zones marked around schools and the inner city ring. Average-speed enforcement (Tutor system) operates on sections of the A1 between Incisa Valdarno and Arezzo.
Road Conditions
The A1 through Florence is Italy's busiest motorway and carries consistent commercial traffic year-round. The Porretta Terme tunnel section between Barberino di Mugello and the Apennine ridge (approximately 15 km of tunnel and viaduct) constricts traffic during high summer volume. The SGC FI-SI is a fast, two-lane-per-direction road with no toll, manageable for all vehicle sizes. The SR222 Chiantigiana is narrow, with tight bends through Panzano, Lamole, and Castagnoli; appropriate speed is 40-50 km/h on the bends, with awareness of agricultural vehicles and cyclists coming uphill. Val d'Orcia SP roads include gravel sections in dry conditions; standard campervans handle them fine. The SS1 Aurelia along the Maremma coast is a wide, fast state road with good overtaking opportunities: the most campervan-relaxed road in the region after the SGC FI-SI.
Driving Culture
Florentine urban driving involves high scooter and cyclist density on the Lungarno boulevards and in the Oltrarno neighbourhood. The ZTL camera system makes driving into the historic centre a costly mistake; stay alert to the orange ZTL signage at every restricted entry point. Siena roundabouts follow Italian priority-to-entering-vehicle convention in some locations: check priority signage at each roundabout individually rather than applying a single rule. On Chianti hill roads, the etiquette for meeting an oncoming vehicle on a narrow section is to pull fully into the verge if you are driving downhill; uphill has practical priority.
Florence, Chianti, and Val d'Orcia Circuit (approx. 600 km)
Campervan hire: €560-1,260 (Adventure or California category in the May-June shoulder season at approximately €80-110/day at the lower end; an Active or Comfort motorhome in July-August peak season at approximately €130-180/day at the upper end; over 7 days this translates to approximately €560-770 in shoulder season and €910-1,260 in peak season before optional add-ons; book 6-8 weeks ahead for July and August at the Florence depot)
Fuel: €111-185 (600 km at approximately 10L/100km = 60 litres diesel; at approximately €1.85/L for off-motorway diesel the fuel cost comes to approximately €111 for a standard Chianti-Val d'Orcia loop; if the route extends to include the Maremma return leg, adding approximately 300 km, fuel rises to approximately €165-185 total; fill at the Q8 in Greve in Chianti before the SR222 descent toward Siena rather than waiting for a Siena-area station, and at Buonconvento on the SS2 before the Val d'Orcia side road network)
LPG: €10-20 (a week of evening cooking and water heating draws approximately 5-10 kg of LPG, costing approximately €10-20 at Italian GPL prices; fill completely at the ENI/GPL near Scandicci before departure as LPG supply is unreliable on the SR222, in the Val d'Orcia, and in the Casentino interior)
Tolls: €0-25 (the primary Chianti-Val d'Orcia-Maremma circuit uses the SGC FI-SI superstrada (toll-free) to Siena and the SS1 Aurelia (free state road) to the Maremma, incurring no significant toll charges; A11 west to Pisa adds approximately €4-6 each way; A1 north to the Casentino via Incisa Valdarno adds approximately €3-4 each way; a pure wine-road and landscape loop incurs minimal toll costs)
Campgrounds: €154-280 (€22-40/night × 7; Camping Michelangelo at approximately €25-38/night; Il Poggetto in the Chianti zone at approximately €18-28/night; Siena Colleverde at approximately €20-32/night; agriturismo near Pienza/Montalcino at approximately €15-25/night; Camping Maremma Sans Souci at approximately €25-40/night; the full circuit across all these sites over 7 nights averages approximately €22-40/night)
Florence to Rome (278 km, approximately 2 hours 45 minutes via A1): The A1 southbound from Florence passes Arezzo (77 km), Chiusi (140 km, junction for Val d'Orcia and Umbria), and Orvieto (200 km, worth a half-day stop for the Duomo and underground tufa city, entry approximately €11 combined) before descending to Rome. A logical one-way for travellers who spend time in Tuscany and conclude in the capital. The Rome depot receives the vehicle.
Florence to Venice (257 km, approximately 2 hours 30 minutes via A1 and A4): The A1 north to Bologna (105 km, 1 hour), then A13 to Padova and A4 east into the Venice mainland at Mestre. Venice itself is inaccessible by vehicle; the Tronchetto island at the causeway entrance is the campervan arrival point, from where vaporetti reach the city. A one-way covering the Casentino or Chianti before heading northeast.
Florence to Pisa and the Cinque Terre direction (80 km to Pisa via A11, then 120 km to La Spezia via A12): Drop the vehicle at Pisa after the Leaning Tower and the Campo dei Miracoli, or continue to a La Spezia-adjacent depot to end an itinerary beginning on the Chianti wine road and concluding on the Ligurian coast.
Florence to Bologna (105 km, approximately 1 hour via A1): A short one-way suited to travellers who combine Florence with a Chianti circuit and finish in Bologna for its food market (Quadrilatero market, GPS 44.4952°N, 11.3418°E), the Piazza Maggiore, and the Emilian Po plain. The Bologna depot receives the vehicle.
Florence toward Naples and the Amalfi approach (approximately 490 km to Naples, 4 hours 30 minutes via A1): A full south-to-north Italy one-way beginning in Florence. The route descends through Rome (a natural midpoint stop at a Rome campsite) and continues to Naples. Note that the Amalfi Coast roads are inaccessible to most campervans due to road width and vehicle restrictions; use Naples or Salerno as the base for Amalfi coast day trips by ferry or local bus.
Florence to Milan (298 km, approximately 2 hours 50 minutes via A1): Northbound via Bologna (105 km), then A1 continues through Modena (153 km) and the A7 approach to Milan. A logical option for travellers starting a Tuscany circuit in Florence and concluding at the Milan depot for an international connection via Malpensa or Linate.
No other location in the Indie Campers Italy network puts the SR222 Chiantigiana within 20 km of the pickup point. From the depot areas near Campi Bisenzio or Scandicci, you are on the Chianti wine road within 30 minutes of leaving the vehicle lot: the first vine rows appear south of Impruneta, and the first Gallo Nero estate sign comes before Greve in Chianti. Siena is 68 km on a toll-free superstrada. The Val d'Orcia UNESCO landscape is under 2 hours away. The Foreste Casentinesi, the most intact Apennine forest in Italy, is 60 km northeast. The Maremma coast, with its undeveloped beaches and wild park, is 150 km south. None of the other Italian depots in the Indie Campers network places this specific combination of wine country, UNESCO landscape, ancient forest, and undeveloped coast within a single 150 km radius.
The experience available only from Florence as a starting point is the full Chianti circuit from the city's own southern edge. The SR222 begins where the Florence municipal boundary ends. You drive out of a city that contains the Uffizi, the Baptistery, and Piazzale Michelangelo, and within 25 minutes you are on a narrow road through dense oak woodland, the first cantina sign to the left, a stone farmhouse with a Brunello label on the gate. That geographic compression between Renaissance art capital and medieval wine country, accessible by driving a single road south, does not exist anywhere else in the Indie Campers Italy network. The Val d'Orcia loop that follows, down the SS2 from Siena, along the SP146 near La Foce, up through Pienza and Montalcino, and back north through Buonconvento, is a 300-400 km route that passes through the most-photographed agricultural landscape in Italy without requiring a single motorway segment.
The morning before departure, go to the Mercato Centrale on Via dell'Ariento (open from 7am, Monday to Saturday). Buy a kilo of Chianina beef from the butchers' counter on the ground floor, a package of fresh pappardelle from the pasta stall, and a bottle of Chianti Classico from the wine counter. Walk the five minutes to Piazzale Michelangelo for the last elevated view of the Arno valley, the Brunelleschi dome sitting above the terracotta rooflines, the hills of Fiesole to the northeast. Then drive south out of the city on the SR222 with the Chianti hills ahead and the Arno falling behind. The trip starts the moment the vine rows begin.
Key destinations reachable from Florence as a campervan base:
Best for: concerts, events, long daylight hours, Maremma coast swimming.
Skip if: heat, A1 congestion, and full campgrounds concern you.
Booking note: Camping Michelangelo and Panoramico Fiesole require 6-8 weeks' advance booking for July and August.
Autumn (September to October)
The optimal campervan season for Tuscany. Temperatures sit at 18-26°C (64-79°F) in September, dropping to 12-20°C (54-68°F) by late October. The grape harvest (vendemmia) runs from mid-September through October across the Chianti and Montalcino zones: estate cantinas accept visitors during harvest, the SR222 carries farm machinery, and the smell of fermentation drifts through open van windows in the valley. Truffle season opens in October across the San Miniato and Crete Senesi areas, with white truffle festivals running on weekends through November. Val d'Orcia roads are quiet, the light sits low and warm, and the cypress-lined SP14 near La Foce earns its reputation in this season. Campground availability opens significantly after the first week of September.
Best for: wine, truffles, food, Val d'Orcia landscapes, post-peak campground pricing.
Skip if: you need guaranteed warmth at the Maremma coast, which cools quickly after mid-October.
Booking note: September campgrounds across Tuscany have good availability; Siena Colleverde and the Chianti sites require 1-2 weeks' advance booking.
Winter (November to February)
Temperatures fall to 3-10°C (37-50°F) in December and January. The Apennine passes above Camaldoli can require winter tyres from November onwards, and the A1 through the Porretta Terme tunnels recommends them from late October. Florence city sites including the Uffizi, Baptistery, and Boboli Gardens are uncrowded from November to February, with queue times a fraction of the summer peak. The Florence Marathon runs in late November: road closures affect the SR67 and Lungarno approaches on race morning, and campsite departure before 7:30am is advisable. Only Camping Michelangelo remains open year-round among Florence's main options; Panoramico Fiesole and Siena Colleverde close by November.
Best for: low crowds, city sightseeing, truffle season extension, lower campground rates.
Skip if: you want to drive the Chianti backroads or Maremma coast, which are at their least accessible in winter.

Essential Apps
Park4Night: The primary tool for locating aree di sosta, wild camping spots, and free parking along the Val d'Orcia and Casentino routes. Download and cache the Tuscany and Umbria map region before departure; cell service disappears on the SP14 and SP67 without warning.
ViaMichelin: The most reliable routing app for campervans in Tuscany, with height and weight filter settings that prevent routing through Siena's centro storico or into San Gimignano's narrow approach lanes.
Google Maps offline: Download the Chianti, Val d'Orcia, and Maremma map tiles before leaving Florence. Signal drops between Panzano and Castelnuovo Berardenga on the SR222, and throughout the upper Casentino forest.
Telepass App: Manage your transponder account, check remaining credit, and receive toll charge notifications. The SGC FI-SI is toll-free, but the A1 and A11 charge at standard Italian motorway rates for your vehicle class.
CamperContact: A secondary sosta-finding app with good coverage of the Siena province and Maremma coast areas where Park4Night entries can be sparse.

Campervan-Specific Notes
Height: Florence city centre has no covered multi-storey parking available to campervans (Oltrarno and central car parks all have height restrictions below 2 metres). Use open-air outer car parks (Parcheggio Parterre north of the ZTL, GPS 43.7820°N, 11.2638°E) or campground on-site parking. Length: Chianti SP estate roads restrict vehicles over 6-7 metres in practical terms; always park in the town square and explore on foot. Tunnels: the A1 Apennine section requires LPG valve closed during passage (signed at each tunnel entrance). Wildlife: wild boar (cinghiale) are common on Val d'Orcia secondary roads from dusk to dawn; reduce speed after sunset on the SP53, SP88, and SP14.
Legal
Blood alcohol limit in Italy is 0.5 g/L. Zero tolerance (0.0 g/L) applies to drivers under 21 and to drivers with less than 3 years of licence history. Winter tyre regulations apply on designated mountain roads in Tuscany from 15 November to 15 April, including the Futa Pass (SS65) and the Apennine routes above Camaldoli. The A1 tunnel section requires winter tyres or snow chains from 15 November in severe conditions. Mobile phone use while driving: banned without hands-free equipment, with fines of €165-660 and licence point penalties.
Practical Logistics
Tolls
The A1 Autostrada del Sole charges by vehicle class. A standard campervan (Class 2, under 3.5 tonnes) pays approximately €7.50-8.50 for the Florence to Bologna segment (105 km). A larger motorhome (Class 3, over 3.5 tonnes or above 1.3 metres at the front axle) pays approximately €11-15 for the same segment. Florence to Rome (278 km via A1) costs approximately €22-28 for Class 2 and €35-45 for Class 3. The SGC FI-SI (Florence-Siena superstrada) is entirely toll-free for all vehicle classes; this is the primary road for Siena, Val d'Orcia, and Maremma approaches. The A11 from Florence to Pisa costs approximately €4-6 for Class 2. Telepass transponders process tolls electronically; confirm transponder availability at vehicle pickup, as fines for unmanned barrier violations are sent post-hire to the hire company and then to the driver.
ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones)
Florence's historic centre ZTL operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at every entry point to the historic centre. No vehicle without a specific permit may enter. The ZTL boundary covers the entire area around the Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica, and the Ponte Vecchio. Fines range from €80 to €330 per violation, plus the hire company's administrative surcharge. Park at Camping Michelangelo (Oltrarno hill) or outside the ZTL ring and use bus 12 or 13 from Piazzale Michelangelo to reach the centre.
Siena's entire centro storico is a ZTL and pedestrian zone. Park at Parcheggio Ravacciano (GPS approximately 43.3130°N, 11.3420°E) or Parcheggio Il Campo (GPS approximately 43.3124°N, 11.3405°E) on the outer ring road. Walk up through the gates; the walk from Ravacciano to Piazza del Campo takes about 15 minutes. Cost approximately €1.50-2.00/hour.
San Gimignano prohibits campervans above approximately 5 metres from entering the town walls. Park at the Le Piazzole car park below the walls (GPS approximately 43.4654°N, 11.0408°E, approximately €2/hour) and walk through the Porta San Giovanni gate.
Traffic
The A1 through Florence is the most congested segment of the Italian motorway network during summer. Friday evenings northbound and Sunday evenings southbound produce delays of 30-90 minutes at the Firenze Nord, Firenze Impruneta, and Firenze Certosa interchanges. Plan any Florence departure before 7:30am or after 9:30am on weekday mornings to clear the city before traffic builds.
Getting from the Airport
Florence Airport (FLR, GPS 43.8100°N, 11.2051°E): 7 km from city centre, 10-15 km from depot areas. Taxi to depot: approximately €25-35, 15-25 minutes. Sita Urban bus T2 to Piazza Santa Maria Novella: approximately €1.70, 20 minutes; then taxi to depot, approximately €15-20 more.
Pisa Airport (PSA, GPS 43.6839°N, 10.3950°E): 80 km west. Pisamover shuttle to Pisa Centrale: €5, 5 minutes. Train to Florence Santa Maria Novella: approximately €9-15, 50-60 minutes. Direct taxi from PSA to Florence depot: approximately €90-120, 55-70 minutes.
Top Mistakes to Avoid
Driving into the Florence ZTL. The cameras operate 24/7. If a GPS routes you through the Piazza del Duomo area or down Via del Corso, do not follow it. Use ViaMichelin with the "avoid restricted zones" setting active.
Parking inside Siena's outer ring road. The entire city above the ring road is a pedestrian ZTL. The outer car parks (Ravacciano, Santa Caterina, San Francesco) are specifically designed for day visitors.
Driving into San Gimignano with a large motorhome. The approach lane from Le Piazzole to the town gate is approximately 3.5 metres wide. Anything over 6 metres will not turn the final corner. Park at Le Piazzole and walk.
Running low on LPG before entering Val d'Orcia. There is no LPG between Buonconvento and Montalcino, and none on the SP14 or SP53 side roads. Fill in Florence or at the Incisa Valdarno IP station before heading south.
Underestimating the A1 through the Apennine tunnels. The 15 km of tunnel from Barberino di Mugello to the Apennine ridge require LPG valves closed and reduce speed to the 80 km/h tunnel limit.
Driving the SR222 in a motorhome over 7 metres and expecting to access estate side roads. The SR222 itself is fine for all standard campervans. The SP roads branching to individual cantinas narrow to 3-4 metres with no passing spots. Park in Greve or Panzano and use local transport or taxis for estate visits.
Failing to pre-book the Uffizi. Walk-up queues in June through August exceed 3 hours. Online booking (approximately €4 surcharge on top of the €25 entry) is non-negotiable in peak season.
Food and drink: €200-450 (self-catering from the Mercato Centrale for 7 days costs approximately €20-35/day for two people, fresh pasta, Chianina beef, Pecorino Toscano, and seasonal vegetables; one or two Chianti Classico DOCG bottles at approximately €12-18/bottle from Enoteca Alessi or direct from a Greve producer; two restaurant meals during the week at Trattoria Mario and Buca Mario add approximately €30-50 per meal for two; total food budget for two on a self-catering-led approach approximately €200-310 for the week, rising to €350-450 with frequent restaurant meals)
Activities: €120-200 (Uffizi Gallery €25/person, so €50 for two, plus €8 online booking surcharge; Boboli Gardens €10/person; Siena Duomo complex approximately €8/person; Fiesole archaeological area approximately €7/person; Parco della Maremma entry approximately €10/vehicle; all SR222 and Val d'Orcia driving, vineyard viewpoints, beach access at Marina di Alberese, and the Chianti Sculpture Park walking circuit are free; total activity cost for two approximately €120-160)
Parking: €40-70 (Piazzale Michelangelo campervan parking area approximately €3-4/day; Siena outer car parks approximately €8-12/day for a full Siena visit; one or two days of park-and-walk at San Gimignano approximately €6-8/visit; estimate €40-70 for the week's non-campground parking)
Budget total (7 days, 2 people, shoulder season May or September): hire approximately €640, fuel €115, campgrounds €175, food €240, activities €140, parking €50, LPG €15. Total approximately €1,375, or approximately €690 per person.
Mid-range total (7 days, 2 people, June or early October, with two restaurant dinners and one winery tasting): hire approximately €840, fuel €120, campgrounds €200, food €310, activities €160, parking €60, LPG €20, winery tasting approximately €40. Total approximately €1,750, or approximately €875 per person.
Premium total (7 days, 2 people, July-August peak, Active or Comfort category vehicle, nightly restaurant meals, Brunello Riserva purchase): hire approximately €1,200, fuel €125, campgrounds €280 (premium sites with services), food and wine approximately €560 (daily restaurant meals plus a Brunello Riserva at €45-80/bottle), activities €200, parking €80, LPG €20. Total approximately €2,465, or approximately €1,230 per person.
The Florence-Chianti-Val d'Orcia circuit is competitively priced compared to the Rome or Milan networks in the Indie Campers Italy portfolio, where city-proximity campgrounds charge 20-30% more for equivalent pitches. The toll-free SGC FI-SI connection to Siena keeps driving costs materially lower than routes requiring sustained A1 use, and the density of free scenic drives (the SR222 itself, the entire Val d'Orcia road network, and the Maremma SS1 corridor) means the Florence circuit delivers the most scenery per euro of the central Italian Indie Campers network.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.
