Campervan Road Trips from San Diego
San Diego is where the Pacific Coast Highway begins and the Sonoran Desert ends. The city sits at the southwestern corner of the continental United States with Mexico 18 miles to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and three distinct ecosystems within a two-hour drive: chaparral canyons, high desert, and the Colorado Desert of Joshua Tree. The water is warm enough to surf year-round. The mountains east of the city climb to 6,500 feet and receive snow most winters. The Anza-Borrego Desert, the largest state park in California, starts 90 miles from downtown and covers 600,000 acres of badlands, slot canyons, and wildflower flats that bloom in extraordinary color after a wet winter.
Drive north from San Diego and the Pacific Coast Highway runs 1,100 miles to the Oregon border without ever losing the ocean. Los Angeles is 120 miles up I-5 or 140 miles along the coast. Big Sur is 500 miles north. The Oregon coast is two long days. Head east and Joshua Tree National Park sits at the junction of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, 170 miles from the depot.
What to do in San Diego
Joshua Tree National Park - 170 miles northeast via I-10 east and CA-62 north, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes. Joshua Tree sits at the meeting point of two distinct desert ecosystems: the higher, cooler Mojave Desert in the northwest section, covered with the namesake trees and granite boulder formations, and the lower Colorado Desert in the southeast, where the vegetation thins out and the landscape flattens into creosote flats and desert wash.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - 90 miles east via I-8 and CA-79 north, roughly 2 hours. At 600,000 acres, Anza-Borrego is the largest state park in California and the second-largest in the contiguous US. It's also one of the least visited, which in practical terms means you can spend a full day driving slot canyons and desert washes without seeing another vehicle.
Channel Islands National Park - 180 miles northwest via US-101 north to Ventura, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes. Channel Islands is one of the least-visited national parks in California despite sitting 14 miles offshore from Ventura and less than 2 hours from San Diego. The five accessible islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara) cover 250,000 acres of undisturbed coastal wilderness where island foxes, elephant seals, and brown pelicans live without ever seeing mainland California. The kelp forests around Anacapa and Santa Cruz Island are among the best snorkeling and diving environments on the Pacific Coast.
Pacific Coast Highway: San Diego to Big Sur (850km) - The stretch of US-1 and CA-1 north from San Diego is the most famous coastal drive in the United States. San Diego to Los Angeles via Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1 and PCH) covers 145 miles through Oceanside, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, and Malibu, with ocean views for most of the drive. Los Angeles to Santa Barbara via US-101 and PCH covers 100 miles. Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo (SLO) covers 100 miles through the Santa Ynez wine country detour on CA-154 and the Gaviota Coast. SLO to Morro Bay to Big Sur covers 100 miles of the most dramatic coastal scenery in California, with the Santa Lucia Mountains dropping straight into the ocean for 90 miles through the Big Sur coast.
Cabrillo National Monument -10 miles from downtown San Diego at the tip of the Point Loma Peninsula (GPS: 32.6733° N, 117.2426° W, $20/vehicle). The smallest national monument in this guide is also the easiest to reach from the depot. The monument commemorates the 1542 landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European explorer to set foot on the West Coast of the United States. The view from the overlook at 422 feet covers the entire San Diego Bay, the downtown skyline, the Coronado Bridge, and on clear days, the mountains of Baja California 20 miles south. The tidepools on the western slope of Point Loma are some of the most accessible and most populated on the California coast: sea urchins, hermit crabs, octopus, and eel grass in pools that drain at every low tide.

Why Hire a Campervan in San Diego
The geography makes the case directly. San Diego has the most consistently mild climate of any major American city, with 266 sunny days per year and temperatures that stay in the 60-75°F range for most of the year. Camping here is a year-round activity in a way it simply isn't in New York, Denver, or Seattle. The campgrounds at San Elijo, South Carlsbad, and Crystal Cove State Park book out months ahead in summer because people come specifically to sleep with the ocean 100 feet from their door.
The Pacific Coast Highway north is the most celebrated road trip drive in the country. Driving it in a campervan, stopping at Malibu Creek for the first night and Santa Barbara for the second, is a different experience than flying into San Francisco and driving south. You start from the beginning and follow the coast the entire way without a single mile of backtracking.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) sits 3 miles northwest of downtown, making it one of the most conveniently located major airports in the US at roughly 10-15 minutes from the depot by car. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is 120 miles north via I-5, approximately 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 30 min depending on traffic, and offers significantly more international flight options if your trip originates overseas.

What's the Best Time to Hire a Campervan in San Diego?
Winter (December to February) is when San Diego's mild climate becomes the main selling point. While most of the country is frozen, daytime temperatures in San Diego hold at 60-68°F and the campgrounds along the coast are accessible and uncrowded. Desert camping in Anza-Borrego and Joshua Tree is at its best from November through February: cool nights, warm days, and no summer heat. This is also wildflower season setup; a wet December and January leads to the wildflower blooms that peak from late February through April.
Spring (March to May) is the peak wildflower window and among the most popular times to visit Anza-Borrego. The weather is perfect for coastal driving: clear skies, temperatures in the low 70s, and the marine layer that defines summer mornings is mostly absent. Spring break in late March brings significant traffic to the coast and the main state park campgrounds; book ahead. April and May are genuinely excellent months for everything on this page.
Summer (June to September) brings the marine layer that San Diegans call "June Gloom" (which frequently extends through July: locals call it "No Sky July"). The marine layer burns off by noon most days, leaving clear afternoons, but coastal mornings can be overcast. Inland and in the desert, summer days hit 100-115°F; Joshua Tree and Anza-Borrego are best left for the shoulder seasons. The coast is the right destination in summer. Campground competition at San Elijo, South Carlsbad, and Crystal Cove is at its most intense; book 6 months ahead on ReserveCalifonia.
Fall (October to November) is San Diego at its clearest. The marine layer is largely gone, the summer crowds thin after Labor Day, and the Santa Ana wind events bring offshore winds that push humidity to near zero and temperatures inland into the 80s while the coast stays in the 70s. The light in October along the Torrey Pines cliff trail above the ocean is worth the trip on its own. This is also when Joshua Tree and the desert parks come back into season after summer; October through November are two of the strongest months for desert camping.

Why Start Your Road Trip in San Diego
The Pacific Coast Highway starts here. The Sonoran Desert starts here. Two national parks are within 3 hours. The weather is good every month of the year in a way it simply isn't anywhere else in this guide. If you're building a road trip around California and the western desert, San Diego is the correct starting point: everything runs north, everything runs east, and nothing requires you to turn around and retrace a single mile.
The city gives you two days of genuinely good urban material before you leave. Balboa Park in the morning. Fish tacos and a cold beer at Hodad's in Ocean Beach in the afternoon. Sunset from Torrey Pines above the coast. Then the campervan, the 163 north through Balboa Park, and wherever the route takes you first.
road trip network and the most sensible starting point for any drive heading north along the coast or east into the desert.
The city earns two full days before departure. Balboa Park covers 1,200 acres in the middle of the city and holds 17 museums and the San Diego Zoo, the largest zoo in the United States. The Gaslamp Quarter's Victorian buildings fill a 16-block national historic district. Mission Bay has 27 miles of shoreline for kayaking and paddleboarding. La Jolla Cove has leopard sharks and harbour seals visible from the shore path above the water. Fish tacos at Rubio's Coastal Grill or a full plate at any of the taquerias on University Avenue in North Park are the right way to start the trip. Pick up your Indie Campers vehicle, drive the 163 north to Balboa Park on your way out, and point the wheels wherever the weather's best.

One of the strongest one-way routes in the western US network.
Seven to nine days covers the PCH run to Big Sur or the desert loop through Anza-Borrego and Joshua Tree comfortably. Both are worth at least two nights at their far end; driving all the way to Big Sur or the Mojave for a single night and turning around leaves you wanting more.

Excellent:
I-5 north through Camp Pendleton, I-15 north toward Temecula, I-8 east toward Anza-Borrego are all well-maintained multi-lane highways
Two-lane and remote: CA-1 through Big Sur (no restrictions for standard campervans but two lanes, narrow shoulders on cliff sections, and zero passing opportunities on the ocean side), Anza-Borrego's S22 (paved, accessible to campervans, spectacular)
Unpaved: Fonts Point road in Anza-Borrego (4 miles, passable in dry conditions for most 2WD campervans; check conditions), Geology Tour Road in Joshua Tree (high-clearance 4WD recommended for the full route)
Closures: CA-1 through Big Sur closes after significant storms; always check dot.ca.gov before departure. Anza-Borrego backcountry roads can close after heavy rain without notice
Driving Culture
Freeway merging: California drivers merge at speed and expect the same from you. Do not slow below traffic speed on an on-ramp; maintain pace and merge assertively
Lane changes: California's three-second minimum merge distance law is observed loosely; expect vehicles to merge with tighter gaps than other states
Slower traffic keep right: Active on California interstates outside metro areas. In the Los Angeles basin, every lane is used at every speed simultaneously
Alcohol limit: 0.08% BAC (0.00% for drivers under 21). California DUI fines start at $390 for a first offense plus mandatory licence suspension and DUI program enrollment; total first-offense costs typically $13,000-17,000 when all fees are included
Campervan-Specific
Height: Know your vehicle's exact height before driving any San Diego or Los Angeles urban route. Several older underpasses on surface streets in both metro areas have restricted clearances; Waze with campervan dimensions entered routes around these reliably, but only if your dimensions are entered correctly
Big Sur: No campervan length restrictions on the main CA-1 alignment. Some campground sites (Pfeiffer Big Sur) have a 32-foot maximum; verify at Recreation.gov before booking. The road itself handles standard campervans without issue on the paved sections
Propane: Turn off propane at all fuel stops. No specific tunnel restrictions on the main California highway network, but standard safety protocol applies
Desert heat: Parking a dark-colored campervan in direct sun in Death Valley or Joshua Tree in summer creates interior temperatures that can exceed 150°F within 30 minutes. Park with windows cracked, use a reflective windshield shade, and never leave pets or children inside an unventilated vehicle
Wildlife: Desert tortoises cross roads in Joshua Tree and Anza-Borrego, particularly in spring. Slow down for any animal on the road surface in a national park; stopping for a tortoise is legally required in most California protected areas. Mule deer are common on CA-1 at night through Big Sur and on the Torrey Pines area roads in San Diego at dawn and dusk
Parking: $10-50 (beach day parking $5-15; Balboa Park lots $5-10; metered parking in La Jolla and coastal neighborhoods $2-3/hour)
Total estimates:
Budget: $1,600 (smaller campervan, cook all meals, Joshua Tree and Anza-Borrego camping at base rates, America the Beautiful Pass covers park entries, Cabrillo National Monument and Torrey Pines for free or low-cost city activities)
Mid-range: $3,100 (mid-size campervan, mix of cooking and dining out including a taco run at Lola 55 and a Padres game, San Elijo State Beach and Joshua Tree campgrounds, Channel Islands day trip, San Diego Zoo)
Premium: $5,200 (larger campervan, frequent dining out including Juniper and Ivy, coastal state park campgrounds throughout, Padres tickets plus the Zoo plus Channel Islands ferry, Death Valley detour with Furnace Creek full hookup)
California is the most expensive fuel state in the US and its coastal campgrounds charge accordingly. The combination pushes a San Diego week closer to a New York week in total cost than most travellers expect. The desert camping offsets this significantly: Joshua Tree and Death Valley campground rates are among the most affordable in the NPS system. A trip structured as city days plus Joshua Tree plus coast runs materially cheaper than the same duration spent entirely at San Elijo or South Carlsbad.
Salt Lake City
.
San Diego → Salt Lake City(1,150km, allow 2 days via I-15 north through Las Vegas) — Las Vegas at 480km is the natural overnight stop. Zion and Bryce are on the route before Salt Lake City.
San Diego → Denver(1,750km, allow 3-4 days via I-15 north and US-50 or I-70 east) — Through Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, and Moab before hitting Denver. One of the most scenically dense one-way routes in the western US.
San Diego → Portland(2,050km, allow 4-5 days via I-5 north or PCH) — The full Pacific Coast one-way. Los Angeles, San Francisco, the Redwood Coast, and the Oregon border before Portland.
San Diego → Seattle (2,300km, allow 5-6 days via I-5 north) — The complete West Coast run from the Mexican border to the Canadian one. Portland is the natural penultimate stop.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.
Do I need a special licence to hire a campervan in San Diego?
