France has an autoroute network that works. The tolls are real and the péages add up on an Alps circuit, but the roads are maintained, signposted, and consistently uncrowded outside of July and August Bison Futé black days. The A6, A7, A40, and A41 radiating from Lyon cover four completely different landscapes within two and a half hours in any direction, and every one of those landscapes has campsite infrastructure, motorhome service areas, and food worth stopping for.

The Lyon depot's position is specifically useful for international arrivals. LYS handles direct flights from the UK, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, and the airport is 25-30 km east of the depot on a single road. For departures heading east toward the Alps, the depot is already on the correct side of the city. You do not have to drive through the Lyon urban grid to reach any of the four main circuits.

France's aire de camping-car network adds a dimension that other countries lack. Approximately 4,000 designated motorhome service areas across the country, operated by municipalities, mostly free or €5-10/night, provide water, waste disposal, and often electricity without the structure of a formal campground. The Ardèche alone has dozens. Park4Night maps all of them. This significantly changes the logistics of spontaneous route adjustments.

LYS receives direct flights from 50+ European and international destinations. The rideshare from the terminal to the Lyon depot puts the vehicle in your hands after wheels-down, faster than driving to any alternative depot in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Every booking includes unlimited kilometres as standard. The round trip from Lyon to Chamonix and back is 430 km. The full Alps-Burgundy-Ardèche loop over 14 days covers approximately 2,500 km. A per-kilometre hire on that circuit adds hundreds of euros in distance charges. The Indie Campers unlimited kilometres policy eliminates that calculation entirely.

One-way options connect Lyon to Paris, Marseille, Nice, Barcelona, Bordeaux, and Amsterdam for routes that finish somewhere more logical than doubling back. The A6 north to Paris drops through the Côte d'Or on the way; the A7 south to Marseille passes Vienne, Valence, and the Ardèche turnoff. Confirm current one-way routes and fees at indiecampers.com at the time of booking.

Best Price Guarantee on all direct bookings. 24/7 roadside assistance active from the moment you leave the depot, the Alps, the Vercors, and the Ardèche are circuits where that matters. The Indie Campers fleet runs over 7,000 vehicles across 100+ locations.

Spring (April to June recommended): The Côte d'Or and Beaujolais are at their best: warm enough to sit outside at domaine tastings, cool enough to drive all day. The Alpine passes open progressively from late May (Col du Mont Cenis, Col de l'Iseran — check current opening dates at viamichelin.fr before departure). The Ardèche water level is high enough for canoeing. The Rose Garden in Parc de la Tête d'Or peaks late May through June with 15,000 rose bushes. Campsite availability is good outside school holidays. Best overall window for first-time visitors.

September: Harvest season on both the Beaujolais and the Côte d'Or. Wine estates are working, not hosting tourists — domaine visits require advance booking but the conversations about the vintage are more substantive. The Ardèche gorge water is warm and clear. The Alps are uncrowded after the August school-holiday exodus. The most rewarding month for serious wine travel.

July and August: Peak season. Chamonix and Annecy are at maximum visitor density; the Aiguille du Midi cable car sells out daily. Campsite reservations in the Alps from June are essential. The Ardèche canoe route at full capacity in August requires booking canoe hire and parking weeks ahead. The upside: the A40 to Chamonix runs 24 hours and temperatures in Lyon (regularly 35°C+) make the Chamonix valley at 1,035m genuinely pleasant. Book everything before departure.

October: Foliage colour arrives on the Côte d'Or from mid-month. Beaujolais cru harvest completes and some estates sell barrel samples. The Alps begin closing high routes from late October (Col du Grand Saint-Bernard first). The Ardèche is quiet; the Caverne du Pont d'Arc has same-week availability. Best month for Burgundy wine travel.

November to March: Ski season in Chamonix, Les Contamines, and the Vercors. Beaujolais Nouveau releases the third Thursday of November — Lyon celebrates with particular intensity given proximity to the appellation. The Côte d'Or in winter is the correct season for serious buyers: no tourists, estate gates open, fires in the tasting rooms. A short winter wine circuit from Lyon is entirely viable.

Most popular months: May, June, September.

3 to 5 Days: Beaujolais and Burgundy
Day 1: Campervan pickup, drive north on A6 to Villefranche-sur-Saône (30 km), Beaujolais wine route (Brouilly, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent on D68), overnight near Fleurie or Romanèche-Thorins. Total: approximately 700 km over 7-8 days.

14 Days: The Complete Lyon Loop
Campervan pickup → Lyon city (1 day) → Beaujolais (1-2 nights) → Côte d'Or and Beaune (2 nights) → Dijon (1 night) → Geneva (1 night, Swiss vignette required) → Annecy (2 nights) → Chamonix (2 nights) → Grenoble and Vercors (1-2 nights) → Chartreuse (day visit) → Ardèche gorge (2 nights) → Vienne (1 night) → Lyon return. Total: approximately 2,200-2,500 km. Every major axis of the Lyon circuit without retracing a single road. Nothing left out that matters in the Rhône-Alpes and Burgundy corridor.

Fuel Stations

E.Leclerc drive — The pre-departure fill stop: Leclerc consistently posts the lowest pump prices in France, typically €0.10-€0.20/L below motorway service areas and branded stations. Diesel and unleaded available; confirm pull-through lanes for Class C vehicles.

Total Access — Automated, 24-hour card-operated pumps; typically €0.05-€0.10/L below branded Total forecourt. Good fallback when Leclerc is closed (Sunday afternoon, public holidays).

Motorway service areas (aires de service): On-motorway refuelling is the most expensive option in France — typically €0.15-€0.25/L above off-motorway prices. Use only when necessary between planned fill stops. The A40 west from Chamonix has service areas at Bonneville and Annecy-Nord. The A6 south from Dijon has service areas approximately every 40-50 km. The A7 south to the Ardèche has service areas at Vienne-Reventin and Montélimar.

West of Lyon toward Clermont-Ferrand (A89): Fill in Clermont-Ferrand or at the A89 service area at Combronde before continuing west. The volcanic plateau between Clermont and Bordeaux is not short of fuel but off-motorway options thin beyond the Corrèze.

Fuel price note: French diesel (gazole) runs approximately €1.65-1.80/L in 2025-2026 . A 7-day Alps circuit of approximately 1,500 km at 12L/100km burns approximately 180L — budget €300-€325 at current rates.

LPG (GPL) Refill Stations

Total station — Total is the most reliable LPG network in France; most full-service Total stations (not Total Access automated) carry GPL. The station locator at total.fr/carburants/stations-services filters by GPL availability.

Avia stations — Avia is the second most consistent LPG supplier on French national roads.

GPL cylinder exchange (butane/propane): Available at most Leclerc, Carrefour, and Intermarché supermarkets. Butagaz (red = propane, blue = butane) and Antargaz cylinders are the most common standards. Exchange approximately €15-25 per cylinder swap. Not all campervan regulators accept French cylinder fittings; confirm compatibility at depot pickup.

Regional note: The Ardèche gorge area (Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, Ruoms) has LPG at Total stations in Aubenas (30 km from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc). Fill before leaving the A7 corridor if your route goes directly to Vallon. Chamonix has LPG at the Total station on Avenue de l'Aiguille du Midi; stock up before driving the full Alps circuit.

Motorhome Service Points (Dump Stations)

Aire de camping-car network: France has approximately 4,000 municipal motorhome service areas with fresh water fill, grey water disposal, and black water dump facilities. Most charge €2-5 for the service point use regardless of whether you park overnight. Park4Night maps all confirmed locations with user-reported operational status.

Key confirmed service points on the main circuits:

• Camping Indigo Lyon (Dardilly): On-site for registered guests
• Annecy Municipal Campground (Le Belvédère): On-site
• Chamonix valley (Les Houches): Multiple aires in the valley; Mairie de Chamonix aire de service
• Vallon-Pont-d'Arc municipal aire: GPS approximately 44.3792°N, 4.3929°E — service point confirmed
• Beaune: Municipal camping aire on the ring road
• Dijon: Aire de camping-car at Lac Kir (GPS: approximately 47.3108°N, 4.9995°E)
• Sanidumps.com and Park4Night both map current French motorhome service points with operational status

Minimum hire age is 21. A valid driving licence is required. UK and EU licences are accepted without additional documentation. Visitors from outside the EU and EEA whose licence is not in Roman script must carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home country licence.

The Crit'Air sticker (vignette Crit'Air) is mandatory for driving in any French ZFE (Zone à Faibles Émissions). Indie Campers hire vehicles carry stickers as part of their French registration; confirm the sticker is present and visible on the windscreen at depot pickup. The Indie Campers fleet uses Euro 6 engines (Crit'Air 1 or 2), which are unaffected by Lyon's current Crit'Air 3-and-below ban, but the sticker must be displayed regardless.

No vehicle inspection sticker or additional emissions document is required for hire vehicles crossing into Germany, Switzerland, or Spain from France. Confirm with the depot before any cross-border travel outside the EU (Switzerland, UK). For Italy via the Mont Blanc Tunnel, confirm whether prior authorisation is required from the Lyon depot before departure.

France has no dedicated national parks entrance fee comparable to the US system. The Ardèche, Vercors, and Chartreuse are all Regional Natural Parks with free access; the fees at specific attractions (Caverne du Pont d'Arc, distillery tours) are admission charges to individual sites, not park entry fees.

Speed Limits

Autoroutes (motorways):

• Dry: 130 km/h for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes
• Rain: 110 km/h
• Fog (visibility under 50m): 50 km/h
• Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (some larger Comfort-category motorhomes): 110 km/h dry, 100 km/h rain

Routes nationales and dual carriageways:

• Dry: 110 km/h under 3.5t; 100 km/h over 3.5t
• Rain: 100 km/h; 90 km/h over 3.5t

Routes départementales (single roads outside towns): 80 km/h (reduced from 90 km/h in 2018)

Agglomération (towns): 50 km/h. Many French towns including central Lyon have implemented Zone 30 (30 km/h) on residential and commercial streets.

Mountain approach roads: The Chisos Basin Road equivalent in France is the Col du Galibier (2,642m): posted at 40 km/h through the switchbacks, and that limit is not decorative. The Combe Laval cliff road in the Vercors posts 30 km/h through the exposed sections.

Radar enforcement: France has one of the densest speed camera networks in Europe, including section-average cameras (contrôle de vitesse par tronçon) on many A-road stretches between specific points. Waze operates with restricted speed camera warnings in France by law; use Bison Futé for traffic rather than radar avoidance.

Fines: Speeding fines run from €68 (1-20 km/h over) to €3,750 (50+ km/h over), with licence suspension and vehicle confiscation possible above 50 km/h excess.

Road Conditions

Autoroutes: Excellent. Toll-funded and maintained; the A6, A7, A40, A41, and A43 from Lyon are multi-lane, well-surfaced, and handle significant freight traffic without degradation.

Routes départementales in the Alps: Excellent surface quality on the main mountain roads (D1006 Grenoble to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, D1090 to Modane). The narrow sections in the upper Vercors (D531 west of Grenoble) require attention on blind bends but are in good repair.

D290 Ardèche corniche: Single lane in sections with passing bays; maintained but exposed. No guardrails on the canyon side in parts of the Belvédère de Gaud section. Drive at posted limits.

Flash flood risk: The Ardèche river can rise 5-8 metres within hours after heavy rain upstream. The D290 and low-lying D579 approaches to Vallon-Pont-d'Arc are vulnerable. Check Météo-France weather alerts before any low-elevation Ardèche gorge day.

Driving Culture

Priorité à droite: On roads without a priority diamond sign, traffic approaching from the right has priority — even on what appears to be a main road. This rule still applies on some smaller French towns' internal road networks. The yellow diamond sign confirms you have priority; its absence means check right.

Roundabouts: Traffic on the roundabout has priority over entering traffic (since 1984). However, some roundabouts pre-dating 1984 are still signed with priorité à droite inwards; look for signage at the approach.

Headlight flashing: French drivers flash headlights to warn of police or radar ahead — a courtesy, not aggression.

Eating restrictions: France has a legal prohibition on eating while driving. Hands-free phone use is required; handheld phone use results on-the-spot fines.

Alcohol limit: 0.05% BAC (stricter than the UK's 0.08% and the US's 0.08%). 0.02% for drivers with less than 3 years of licence. First offence: fine of €135-€4,500, licence suspension. It is recommended to carry a single-use breathalyser in the vehicle (previously mandatory; fine removed but still best practice).

Mandatory equipment: High-vis vest (accessible from inside the vehicle, not in the boot), warning triangle, and valid insurance documentation. Crit'Air sticker displayed on windscreen.

Campervan-Specific

Vehicle height: Enter your vehicle's roof height in ViaMichelin before routing through any French town. Old stone bridges on Burgundy departmental roads and low-clearance underpasses in Ardèche villages can drop to 3.2-3.5m without advance warning from standard GPS.

LPG/propane: Turn off at all fuel stops — standard French safety protocol. No tunnel restrictions on the A40, A41, or A6; the Mont Blanc Tunnel has specific LPG restrictions for vehicles with fixed LPG tanks (confirm at atmb.com before departure if your vehicle has a fixed LPG heating system rather than removable cylinders).

Parking: Do not attempt street parking in central Lyon, Annecy old town, or Beaune centre with a motorhome. Rideshare or walk from the designated motorhome car parks.

Heat management: A motorhome parked in direct Ardèche sun in July reaches interior temperatures of 50-55°C within 30 minutes of the engine off. The gorge car parks have limited shade; park facing east if possible and use a reflective windshield cover. The Chamonix valley is the natural thermal escape from a Lyon heatwave; the temperature differential between Lyon (35°C in July) and Chamonix (22°C) is the reason half of France drives east in August.

Mountain grades: The upper Col du Galibier has a 12% grade on the south approach. Downshift before the grade begins; do not ride the brakes on sustained descent with a loaded vehicle. The Chamonix valley access road (D1506) from Cluses is well-graded and suitable for all Indie Campers vehicle categories.

Lyon → Paris (470 km, approximately 4h30 via A6 north | toll approximately €35-40). The A6 north is the Route des Grands Crus by motorway: the exits at Beaune and Dijon drop you onto the D122 wine road. The logical structure is 3-4 days of Beaujolais and Burgundy on the way north, with a Paris drop-off at the end. The return from Paris gives the same option in reverse.

Lyon → Marseille (315 km, approximately 3h via A7 south | toll approximately €20-25). The Autoroute du Soleil corridor passes through Vienne (Roman theatre, 30 km south of Lyon), Valence, Montélimar (nougat detour, 15 minutes off the motorway), and Avignon (Palais des Papes, 2.5 hours from Lyon). Drop off in Marseille after an Ardèche detour via the D579 east. One-way available; confirm current routes and fees at indiecampers.com.

Lyon → Nice (470 km, approximately 4h30 via A43/A8 | toll approximately €40-55).
The natural Alps one-way: pick up in Lyon, drive the A41 to Annecy (140 km), A40 to Chamonix (215 km), back west to Grenoble, then A48/A51/A8 south through Sisteron, Digne, and the Alpes-Maritimes to Nice. Passes through the Vercors access road and the Haute-Provence lavender plateau (peak bloom mid-June to mid-July). Full circuit approximately 800 km over 7-10 days.

Lyon → Barcelona (approximately 640 km, approximately 6h30 via A43 east and AP7 south through Perpignan | toll approximately €55-80). Alternative routing via A7 south through Montpellier and the Languedoc coast (640 km, approximately 6h). Passes through Nîmes (Maison Carrée, Arena), Montpellier, the Étang de Thau oyster beds, Narbonne, and Perpignan before entering Spain. One of the best long one-way routes on the Indie Campers European network for combining multiple destinations.

Lyon → Bordeaux (approximately 550 km, approximately 5h via A89 west)
The A89 Autoroute des Arvernes crosses the Auvergne volcanic plateau (Parc des Volcans, Puy de Dôme visible from the motorway east of Clermont-Ferrand) before dropping into the Dordogne and the Gironde estuary. The most interesting autoroute drive departing Lyon; Saint-Émilion (10 km off the A89 near the Bordeaux end) is a logical final stop before drop-off.

Lyon → Amsterdam (approximately 1,050 km, approximately 9h30 via A6/A31/E25)
The full northern Europe circuit: Lyon north through Burgundy and Champagne, across Belgium, to Amsterdam. Best done over 3-5 days with stops at Beaune, Reims (Champagne caves, approximately 4h north of Lyon), and Brussels or Ghent before Amsterdam. Confirm available one-way routes and fees at indiecampers.com.

One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability at the time of booking.

LYS receives direct flights from 50+ European airports and handles direct long-haul from the Middle East, North Africa, and North America via connecting hubs. It is specifically well-placed for British, German, Spanish, and Dutch visitors who need an alternative to Paris CDG or Marseille.

The city itself earns that single day before you leave. The 27 Rue Saint-Jean traboule open to the public in Vieux Lyon, the Théâtre Gallo-Romain de Fourvière above it, the Musée des Beaux-Arts across the Saône on Place des Terreaux, and the bouchon on Rue du Garet within walking distance of all three: this is the densest concentration of things worth seeing in any French city outside Paris, and it takes one full day rather than a long weekend.

Then the geography does the rest. The A6, A7, A40, and A41 radiating from Lyon cover the four most distinct road trip landscapes in central France within a 2h30 drive. What makes Lyon specifically work for a one-way road trip is what those routes connect to beyond their first destinations: the A40 east to Chamonix continues through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Courmayeur and northern Italy; the A7 south through the Ardèche connects to Avignon, Marseille, and Barcelona; the A6 north through Burgundy connects to Paris, Reims, and Amsterdam. A 14-day booking from Lyon can close a full central Europe loop without retracing a single motorway.

Unlimited kilometres makes the arithmetic simple. The round trip from Lyon to Chamonix via Annecy and Grenoble covers approximately 800 km. The full 14-day Beaujolais-Alps-Ardèche-Burgundy loop covers approximately 2,500 km. Neither produces a per-kilometre surcharge on any Indie Campers booking; the only variable is fuel and tolls. 24/7 road assistance active from the moment you leave the depot. Best Price Guarantee on all direct bookings.
