Our Road Trips Itineraries
Geneva's genuine advantage in this network is speed to serious mountains. No other major European campervan hub puts you at the base of Mont Blanc in barely over an hour, and few combine that with a second country's lake-district old town (Annecy) and a third distinct landscape (Gruyères' Swiss dairy country) all within a two-hour radius. A Lyon or Turin-based depot reaches Chamonix eventually, but with considerably more driving; from Geneva, it's a genuine half-day round trip if you want it to be.
The specific experience that only works with a self-contained vehicle here is chaining the Aiguille du Midi's high-alpine views with an overnight in the valley rather than a rushed day trip from a Geneva hotel. Cable car tickets to the summit sell out on clear-weather days in peak season; staying overnight in Chamonix lets you catch the first departure and beat both the crowds and the afternoon cloud that often rolls in over the massif.
Geneva Airport (GVA, Cointrin, GPS 46.2381°N, 6.1089°E) sits remarkably close to the city, roughly 2.5 miles/10-15 minutes from the center, connected by a direct train (6 minutes) or Bus 10 to downtown; a taxi runs a short, inexpensive fare given the distance. This proximity is a genuine convenience uncommon among the network's other hubs, most of which sit considerably further from their airports.
From the depot, the destinations that matter most: central Geneva and CERN essentially on-site, Col de la Faucille at 15.5 miles/30 min, Lausanne at 40 miles/50 min, Chamonix at 62 miles/1h15, Montreux at 62 miles/1h15, Annecy at 76 miles/1h15, Gruyères at 62 miles/2h.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Geneva rental companies:
Unlimited mileage. A Geneva-Chamonix-Annecy-Gruyères circuit clears 250-310 miles without much effort, and adding the Swiss Riviera or a Jura detour pushes it further still. Most competitors cap daily mileage at 125-155 miles and bill per extra mile past that. Indie Campers doesn't cap it, so an extra loop around Lake Annecy or a detour up the Col de la Faucille doesn't turn into a surprise charge at drop-off.
One-way rentals across 70+ locations. Pick up in Geneva and drop off in Lyon, Milan, or another confirmed depot instead of retracing the same route back. This suits a trip that continues south into Italy through the Mont Blanc Tunnel or west into France rather than looping back to Geneva.
24/7 road assistance, included on every booking, genuinely useful on Chamonix's mountain approach roads and the Col de la Faucille's switchbacks, where a breakdown is more complicated than on a flat freeway.
Basic Protection Plan included, with optional upgrades available at booking if you want a lower excess before tackling Annecy's or Gruyères' tighter historic-center-adjacent parking.
Flexible cancellation available up to 31 days before pickup, useful given how weather-dependent the Aiguille du Midi and other high-alpine excursions are; a clear forecast window is worth planning around.
Winter (December to February)
Temperatures: 30-41°F (-1 to 5°C) in Geneva itself, considerably colder in the mountains, where Chamonix becomes a major ski destination. Geneva runs a Christmas market through December (L'Escalade, the city's own historic festival, falls in early December). The Aiguille du Midi cable car operates a winter schedule geared toward skiers rather than summer hikers.
Best for: a Geneva city stay combined with a Chamonix ski trip, if winter driving and snow chains are part of the plan.
Skip if: Annecy's lake activities or Gruyères' countryside walks are the priority; both are considerably quieter and colder, with some lake-area facilities reduced.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 39-61°F (4-16°C). Lavaux's vineyard terraces green up through April and May, and the Jura's Col de la Faucille reopens fully as snow clears from the pass. Chamonix's high trails remain snow-covered into June at altitude, so valley walks are the better spring option there.
Best for: the Swiss Riviera and Lavaux vineyards, and lower-altitude Jura excursions; book Chamonix cable cars with a flexible date given lingering snow at altitude.
Skip if: high-alpine hiking around Chamonix's Lac Blanc or similar routes is the goal; those trails typically don't clear until June or July.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 59-77°F (15-25°C). Peak season for the Aiguille du Midi, Mer de Glace, and Lac Blanc trail, all fully open and at their best. Annecy's lake swimming and cycling path are in full use, and Gruyères sees its heaviest coach-tour traffic.
3 to 5 Days: Geneva and Chamonix
Day 1: Pick up at the depot, spend the afternoon at CERN and Geneva's Old Town. Overnight at a Geneva-area campsite (GPS approximately 46.190°N, 6.100°E).
Day 2: Drive to Chamonix (62 miles), the Aiguille du Midi cable car in the afternoon if weather allows. Overnight at a Chamonix-area campsite.
Day 3: Mer de Glace or the Lac Blanc trail, depending on conditions and fitness. Overnight at the same site.
Days 4-5 (extending): Add a short Jura detour via Col de la Faucille (15.5 miles from the depot) on the return leg.
7 to 10 Days: Geneva, Chamonix, and Annecy
Days 1-2: Geneva and Chamonix as above.
Day 3: Continue to Annecy (approximately 37 miles from Chamonix), the old town canals and lake cycling path. Overnight at an Annecy-area campsite.
Days 4-5: Full day on Lake Annecy, cycling or swimming, then return toward Switzerland.
Fuel Stations
Diesel in Switzerland runs approximately CHF 1.80-1.90/liter (roughly €1.90-2.00), among the higher prices in this network; fuel in neighboring France, particularly around Annecy or Chamonix, runs somewhat cheaper, so filling up on the French side before returning to Switzerland is a genuine, if modest, saving. A station on the Route de Meyrin near the depot is the practical first and last fill-up. Fuel is readily available throughout the Chamonix valley and around Annecy. Heading up to Gruyères or the Jura pass, fill up before the final climb, since options thin out on the smaller approach roads.
LPG
Available at larger stations around Geneva and Lausanne; less consistent in the French Alpine valleys and rare in the smaller Swiss villages, so plan LPG refills around the larger towns rather than mountain stops.
Dump Stations
Geneva-area campsites, sites around Chamonix and Annecy, and larger Lake Geneva campsites toward Lausanne all run dump points as standard. No dedicated dump station directly in Gruyères or at the Col de la Faucille; plan tank management around the named campsites instead.
Essential Apps
The Swiss e-vignette or a physical vignette sticker, required for any Swiss freeway driving (see Practical Logistics). A French toll calculator for the A40/A41 sections used en route to Chamonix and Annecy. Offline maps for the Jura pass and Gruyères' rural approach roads, where signal can be inconsistent.
Minimum renter age is 21; a valid credit card is required at pickup for the security deposit. Non-EU/non-Swiss drivers should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home license.
Confirm your vehicle's Swiss freeway vignette status at pickup; it should already be affixed, but verify before departure since driving without one on a Swiss freeway carries a real fine.
Book Chamonix and Annecy-area campsites 2-3 weeks ahead for July-August, and book Aiguille du Midi cable car tickets as early as your dates allow in the same period, since same-day availability is not reliable in peak season.
Cross-border driving between Switzerland and France within the Schengen area is standard on Indie Campers bookings; confirm any specific restriction at booking if your itinerary extends into Italy via the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which carries its own separate toll.
Speed Limits
Swiss freeways run up to 75 mph, dropping to 50 mph on main roads outside built-up areas and 30 mph in towns. French freeways toward Chamonix and Annecy run similarly, up to 80 mph (68 mph in wet weather), 50-55 mph on main roads, and 30 mph in towns. Automated speed cameras are common on both sides of the border.
Road Conditions
The A1 within Switzerland and the A40/A41 in France are modern, well-maintained freeways. Mountain approach roads into Chamonix and up to the Col de la Faucille involve winding sections and switchbacks; manageable at moderate speed but not roads to rush, particularly in a larger vehicle.
Driving Culture
Swiss and French driving culture on freeways is generally orderly; mountain roads see more variation, with local drivers often familiar enough with the switchbacks to move faster than visitors should attempt to match. Give way and take mountain curves at your own pace.
RV-Specific
Height and width clearance matter on some of Chamonix's and Annecy's older town-adjacent streets; confirm posted restrictions before any tight approach. The Mont Blanc Tunnel has its own vehicle height, width, and gas-type restrictions if continuing into Italy; confirm your vehicle qualifies before planning that leg. Watch for reduced traction on mountain roads in any wet or early/late-season conditions.
Geneva, Chamonix, and Annecy Circuit (approximately 280 miles)
RV rental for a mid-size campervan over seven days runs in a broad range depending on season and category; the June-August peak pushes rates toward the top of whatever category you book.
Fuel: at roughly 280 miles round trip and typical campervan consumption of 20-25 L/100km, that works out to approximately 90-113 liters of diesel at a blended Swiss/French price of approximately €1.85/liter, putting fuel at roughly €165-210 for the week.
Tolls: the Swiss vignette at approximately €42-45 (valid well beyond this single trip), plus French A40/A41 tolls of roughly €15-25 for the round trip; budget approximately €60-70 total for the week's toll exposure.
Campgrounds: seven nights across a Geneva-area site, a Chamonix-area site, and an Annecy-area site average out to roughly €28-38/night, so budget €196-266 for the week's pitches.
Food: for a week blending Swiss and French grocery self-catering with a handful of restaurant meals, a Chamonix or Gruyères sit-down meal averaging €18-30/person, figure €35-55 per person per day, reflecting Switzerland's genuinely higher cost of living relative to most of this network.
Activities: the Aiguille du Midi round trip runs approximately €75-80/adult, Gruyères Castle approximately €12-14/adult, CERN's public exhibition is free; a typical activity-heavy week runs €180-260 for two adults, driven mainly by the cable car ticket.
Parking: largely covered by campsite fees, with a few euros to CHF for designated lots at the edges of Chamonix, Annecy, and Gruyères.
Geneva to Lyon: approximately 93 miles via the A40, about 1 hour 45 minutes. A short one-way option into central France, useful if continuing the trip westward rather than looping back to Geneva.
Geneva to Milan: approximately 199 miles via the Mont Blanc Tunnel and Italian A5, about 3 hours 30 minutes (tunnel toll applies). A cross-border option into northern Italy, turning a Swiss-French Alpine trip into a three-country itinerary.
Geneva to Nice: approximately 292 miles via the A40 and A8, about 5 hours. A longer southbound option reaching the French Riviera, if the itinerary extends that far.
Geneva to Zurich: approximately 174 miles via the A1, about 2 hours 45 minutes. An eastbound option staying entirely within Switzerland, useful if continuing toward German-speaking Switzerland or onward into Germany or Austria.
Geneva's genuine edge in this network is proximity: no other major European campervan depot puts you at the foot of Mont Blanc, in a second country's lakeside old town, and in a third distinct rural Swiss landscape, all within a two-hour radius. A Lyon, Turin, or Zurich-based trip reaches pieces of this same territory, but none combine Chamonix, Annecy, and Gruyères with Geneva's own compact, walkable, science-museum-and-lakefront city center the way this depot does.
The experience only available from this starting point is the speed of the Chamonix connection specifically: over an hour saved compared with most alternative Alpine gateways, meaning a genuine day trip to the Aiguille du Midi is realistic even on a short, city-anchored stay, not just on a dedicated mountain-focused itinerary.
The departure morning worth building in: an early walk along Geneva's lakefront to the Jet d'Eau before the day's tour boats start running, a coffee near the Old Town's cobbled lanes, then loading the van and pointing it south on the A40 toward the Mont Blanc massif, watching the terrain shift from lakeside city to high alpine valley in barely over an hour.
On vehicle choice: the Adventure or California categories handle Chamonix's, Annecy's, and Gruyères' tighter mountain-village and old-town-adjacent parking most comfortably. The A1/A40/A41 freeway corridors present no obstacle to the larger Active or Comfort categories, which suit a longer circuit with room for a family or group, provided you plan mountain-village parking at designated lots rather than attempting the historic cores directly.
Best for: the full circuit, Chamonix's high-alpine trails, and Annecy's lake; book Aiguille du Midi tickets and Annecy-area campsites at least 2-3 weeks ahead for July-August.
Skip if: you want to avoid Chamonix's and Annecy's busiest crowds; consider early June or September instead.
Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures: 43-63°F (6-17°C). Lavaux's vineyards run their grape harvest through September and into October, a genuinely striking season for the terraced hillsides. Chamonix's high trails close progressively as snow returns to altitude, typically by mid-to-late October.
Best for: Lavaux's harvest season and a quieter Annecy and Gruyères visit with the summer crowds gone.
gone.Skip if: high-alpine trails are the priority; the window closes fast after September.
The most popular months for Geneva campervan rentals are June, July, and August.
Days 7-8: Return via the Swiss Riviera, Lausanne and the Lavaux vineyards, back to Geneva for drop-off.
14+ Days: The Full Alpine Loop with a One-Way South
Follow the 7-10 day circuit above, then instead of returning to Geneva, continue south through the Mont Blanc Tunnel toward Aosta and Turin in Italy (approximately 124 miles from Chamonix, tunnel toll applies), finishing with a one-way drop-off at a confirmed Italian depot rather than retracing the route to Geneva. Confirm current one-way availability and tunnel toll rates at booking.
Switzerland's BAC limit is 0.05%, stricter than some neighboring countries but more standard than Sweden's or Poland's very low thresholds. France's limit is the same at 0.05%. Mandatory equipment includes a warning triangle and reflective vest in France; confirm these are present in the vehicle at pickup given the itinerary's cross-border nature.
Mid-range (2 people, 7 days, vehicle rental not included): approximately €1,000-1,350. Assumes a California or Active-category vehicle, a mix of cooking and restaurant meals including one Aiguille du Midi ticket per person, and standard campsite choices.
Premium (2 people, 7 days, vehicle rental not included): approximately €1,700-2,300. Assumes a Comfort-category RV, peak summer timing, frequent restaurant meals including a Gruyères fondue and Annecy lakeside dinner, upgraded campsite pitches throughout, and a Mont Blanc Tunnel extension into Italy.
Geneva sits toward the higher end of the cost spectrum in this network, driven primarily by Switzerland's genuinely elevated food, fuel, and campsite costs relative to most of Europe; the French legs of the trip (Chamonix, Annecy) run noticeably cheaper than the Swiss legs, so shifting more nights to the French side is the most direct lever for trimming the budget.
