RV Road Trips Across Florida

Florida's road trip geography works on a logic that nothing else in the U.S. network does. The state is flat: its highest natural point, Britton Hill in the Panhandle, sits at 105 meters above sea level, making it the lowest high point of any state in the country. There are no mountain passes to navigate, no elevation changes requiring chain controls, and no Sierra Nevada-style campground reservation wars that require a calendar alert six months in advance. What Florida offers instead is something fundamentally different: 2,170 km of coastline, the only subtropical ecosystem in the continental United States, the most extensive freshwater wetland system in North America, and a highway that ends in the ocean.
The Overseas Highway (U.S.-1) runs 200 km from Florida City south through 42 bridges over open water to Key West, connecting 31 islands across the Florida Straits. The Seven Mile Bridge (GPS: 24.7046° N, 81.1254° W), completed in 1982 to replace the original 1912 Florida East Coast Railway bridge, spans 10.9 km between Knight's Key and Little Duck Key above the Strait of Florida. There is no other road in the U.S. network where you drive on open water at sea level for this distance. That single piece of infrastructure is the reason most people put Florida on a campervan itinerary.
Beyond the Keys, the road trip case for Florida is built on three things. First, the state park system: Florida manages 175 state parks covering 1.6 million acres, with campground infrastructure that ranges from beachfront hookup sites on the Gulf Coast to hardwood hammock forest camping in the Everglades buffer zone. The Florida State Parks system has been voted the best state park system in the United States by the National Recreation and Park Association multiple times. Second, the wildlife density: Everglades National Park protects 6,106 square km of sawgrass prairie, mangrove coast, and cypress strand that contains American alligators, American crocodiles (the only location in the world where both species coexist), Florida manatees, West Indian manatees, Florida panthers, roseate spoonbills, and 36 threatened or endangered species in a single park boundary. Third, the winter climate: Florida in January averages 20-24°C on the southern Gulf Coast. The campground at Bahia Honda State Park in the Keys sits on a beach at 23°C in February. The argument writes itself.
Indie Campers operates two Florida pick up centers: Miami and Orlando. Between them, they cover the state's two primary tourism corridors: the Southeast and Keys circuit from Miami, and the Central Florida and Gulf Coast circuit from Orlando. The Everglades are 60 km west of Miami. The Kennedy Space Center is 80 km east of Orlando. The Gulf Coast barrier island chain from Naples to Clearwater is 2-3 hours from Orlando depending on the specific destination. The Florida Panhandle beaches at Destin and Panama City are 6-7 hours from Miami and 5-6 hours from Orlando; the Panhandle functions effectively as a separate destination, positioned best on a one-way from Orlando or as an extension of a broader Southeast U.S. circuit.
Florida's campground booking culture is more relaxed than California or Yellowstone but more competitive than Alaska. The top-tier Florida State Parks campgrounds, specifically Bahia Honda State Park in the Keys and St. George Island State Park in the Panhandle, fill for weekend dates 11 months in advance via ReserveAmerica. Weekday availability at these same parks in winter (November through April) opens up significantly. The National Park campgrounds in the Everglades (Long Pine Key, Flamingo) book 6 months in advance via Recreation.gov for any December through March date. Hurricane season (June through November) reduces demand at most campgrounds and produces the most negotiable booking landscape in Florida, but it also introduces genuine weather planning variables that the winter window does not.

Florida by Sub-Area: Where to Go and What to Expect

South Florida and the Miami Gateway
The Florida Keys and the Overseas Highway
Everglades National Park and the Ten Thousand Islands
Gulf Coast: Naples to Tampa Bay
Central Florida: Space Coast, Springs, and the Interior
The Florida Panhandle

Nearest pick up center: Miami
Distance across sub-area: Approximately 100 km (62 miles) from Miami north to Lake Okeechobee; 60 km west to the Everglades entrance at Shark Valley
Character: Miami sits at the northern edge of the subtropics at the junction of two distinct ecosystems: the Atlantic coastal ridge to the east, where the city sits on a limestone shelf 3-5 meters above sea level, and the Everglades to the west, where the same limestone shelf drops to 1-2 meters and water flows south in a slow, 80-km-wide sheet toward Florida Bay. The city itself is not a campervan destination in the urban accommodation sense; the depot serves as the logistical origin point for every southward and westward Florida itinerary, not as a camping destination within the city boundaries.

The immediate surroundings offer the clearest illustration of why the campervan works in South Florida. Everglades National Park (GPS: 25.2866° N, 80.8987° W) begins 60 km southwest of the depot via the Florida Turnpike and SR-9336. Biscayne National Park (GPS: 25.4824° N, 80.3314° W), covering 700 square km of mangrove, seagrass, and coral reef in the bay directly east of the Everglades, begins 40 km south of downtown Miami. The Florida Keys bridge at Homestead is 60 km from the depot via U.S.-1. All three are reached before most travelers have finished their first morning coffee.

Best for: First-time Florida visitors using Miami as an international gateway before heading south to the Keys or west to the Everglades; travelers connecting from the Caribbean or South America via MIA; anyone for whom the Everglades is the primary destination
Best months: November through April for South Florida comfort; the summer humidity and mosquito density in the Everglades require genuine preparation (not prohibitive, but different from a winter trip)
