Campervan and RV Rental in A Coruña

A Coruña is an Atlantic city of 250,000 people on the northwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, flanked by the Atlantic Ocean on three of its four sides. The city sits on a 4-mile isthmus between the inner estuary and the Orzán bay; the seafront promenade runs 13 continuous miles around the peninsula, the longest coastal walkway in Spain. At the tip of the headland stands the Tower of Hercules, a 2nd-century Roman lighthouse, the only Roman lighthouse in active use anywhere in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. Fifty-five miles to the north, the Galician coast opens directly to the North Atlantic; 75 miles to the south via the AP-9 is Santiago de Compostela, home to the most visited cathedral in Spain and the endpoint for 350,000 pilgrims per year.

The geography immediately around A Coruña defines the logic of a campervan route from the city: the Costa da Morte (147 miles to Cape Finisterre, 1 hour 40 minutes via the AC-552 and AG-55), the Rías Altas heading northeast (Ferrol at 40 miles, 30 minutes via the AP-9; Playa das Catedrais at 190 miles, 2 hours via the N-634), the Galician interior (Lugo at 100 miles, 1 hour via the A-6; O Cebreiro at 155 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes), and Portugal via the coastal route (Vigo at 155 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes via the AP-9; Valença do Minho at 175 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes). A 7-day route based in A Coruña covers the Galician Atlantic coastline, the Santiago cathedral, the inland Atlantic forest, and the Portuguese border without exceeding 200 miles on any single day.

What to Do in A Coruña

Top Natural Parks and Scenic Drives from A Coruña

Costa da Morte - Cape Finisterre: 147 miles southwest of A Coruña via the AG-55 and AC-550, approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. The Costa da Morte occupies 130 miles of coastline between Malpica de Bergantiños to the north and Cape Finisterre to the south. The name means Coast of Death, derived from more than 200 documented shipwrecks between the 16th and 20th centuries caused by the combination of exposed rocks, shallow seabeds, frequent Atlantic fog, and irregular currents. Finisterre is the westernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula in historical perception (the geodetically westernmost point is Punta da Touriñán, at 9.3015°W, 26 miles to the north), but "Finis Terrae" as a medieval geographic concept described the western edge of the known world, and arriving at the Finisterre lighthouse remains the emotional end point of the Camino de Santiago for tens of thousands of pilgrims each year who walk 90 miles beyond the cathedral.
Santiago de Compostela - 75 miles south of A Coruña via the AP-9 (toll), approximately 45 minutes. Toll-free alternative: N-550 (90 minutes, 80 miles). Santiago de Compostela is a UNESCO World Heritage City (1985) and the capital of the Galician autonomous community, with 97,000 residents. The cathedral (GPS: 42.8805° N, 8.5459° W) is the endpoint of 9 Camino de Santiago routes: the French Way (780 miles from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port), the English Way (120 miles from Ferrol, the route beginning closest to A Coruña), the Portuguese Way (620 miles from Lisbon or 265 miles from Porto), and six further routes with starting points between Irún and Lisbon. In 2024, the Pilgrim Reception Office issued 357,000 Compostelanas (Camino completion certificates); the 2021-2022 Holy Compostelan Year exceeded 400,000 annual pilgrims for the first time in the modern history of the Camino.
Lugo and the Roman Walls - 100 miles east of A Coruña via the A-6 (free motorway), approximately 1 hour. Lugo is the only city in the world completely encircled by its original Roman walls in their entirety, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The walls (2,266 meters in perimeter, 10 meters average height, 4.2 meters at the base) were built between AD 250 and 300 to protect the Roman city of Lucus Augusti; the 85 preserved semicircular towers and 10 gates (5 original, 5 added in later centuries) remain intact. The walkway along the top of the walls is passable in full (complete circuit in 1 hour at a normal pace, free, with ramped access at each gate).
The Rías Altas and Playa das Catedrais - Playa das Catedrais: 190 miles northeast of A Coruña via the N-634, approximately 2 hours. The Rías Altas are the four large estuaries on the north coast of Galicia (Ría de Ribadeo, Ría de Viveiro, Ría de Ortigueira, Ría de Ferrol) and the coastal stretch connecting them. The N-634 (two-lane national road, no toll, moderate traffic outside summer) is the main road for the north coast route; it allows direct stops at cliffs, white quartzite beaches with turquoise water, and estuaries where marine water mixes with Galician river inflow. This is the slowest but most specific route for the campervan traveler who wants the north Galician coastline without motorway shortcuts.
The Galician Interior: O Cebreiro and the French Way - O Cebreiro: 155 miles southeast of A Coruña via the AP-9 and N-VI, approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. O Cebreiro is a mountain pass at 1,295 meters on the border between Galicia and Castile and León; it is the entry point into the final Galician section of the French Way (the 153 miles from O Cebreiro to Santiago de Compostela). The Castro Keltoi (GPS: 42.7067° N, 7.0453° O, free, exterior permanently accessible): a reconstruction of the pallozas, the circular stone and thatched-roof dwellings inhabited by Celtic-era and medieval peoples in O Cebreiro until the 20th century. The Real Parroquia de Santa María a Real do Cebreiro (GPS: 42.7063° N, 7.0449° W, free, 9th-12th centuries) holds the Chalice of O Cebreiro, a 12th-century Romanesque chalice that tradition identifies as one of the possible models for the Holy Grail myth in Arthurian literature.

Why Rent an RV in A Coruña

A Coruña's geography creates a routing problem that only an RV solves efficiently. The Costa da Morte, Cabo Fisterra, the Rías Baixas, Santiago de Compostela, and the Rías Altas are all within 80 to 180 miles of the city, but the Galician coastline is so fragmented by rias that no single hotel base puts you within easy reach of more than one zone. A campervan parked at the Cabo Fisterra headland gives you the westernmost point of continental Spain at sunrise before the Camino de Santiago pilgrims arrive from the village. A night at a Rías Baixas campsite puts you at the Cíes Islands ferry dock in Vigo before the morning queue. Neither works from a city-center hotel in A Coruña.

The circuit that makes the clearest case for an RV from A Coruña is the Galician Atlantic loop: south along the AC-552 through the Costa da Morte to Cabo Fisterra (95 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes), north through the Rías Baixas via Pontevedra and Vigo (120 miles, 1 hour 50 minutes), then inland to Santiago de Compostela and back north on the AP-9 and AG-55 (110 miles, 1 hour 15 minutes). Roughly 325 miles in a loop passing the wildest stretch of Atlantic coastline in Spain, two UNESCO-listed sites, and the most visited pilgrimage city in Europe. The hotel-based equivalent requires four different towns and four separate check-ins. The RV version requires one booking.

Why Choose Indie Campers in A Coruña

Unlimited mileage: Drive the full Costa da Morte circuit (300+ miles return from A Coruña), the Rías Altas route to Playa das Catedrais (380 miles), the inland route to Lugo, O Cebreiro, and the Ribeira Sacra (400+ miles), or any combination without watching a daily counter. Most Galicia competitors cap at 200-300 miles per day; Indie Campers sets no limit.

Portugal border coverage: The Portuguese Way and the A Coruña-Vigo-Porto coastal route are natural extensions of a Galicia campervan trip. A standard Indie Campers booking covers mainland Portugal without additional documentation at the Tui/Valença do Minho border crossing.

24/7 roadside assistance: Included on every booking. If something fails on the Costa da Morte at 2 a.m. between Finisterre and Cee, there is a number to call.

Best Time to Rent an RV in A Coruña

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures in A Coruña: 48-57°F. Precipitation: December and January are the wettest months (120-150 mm each); storms from the northwest are frequent and significant on the Costa da Morte. February begins to dry slightly.

The Costa da Morte in winter is the coast at its most elemental. The sea stacks at Cabo Fisterra and the rocks at Muxía receive Atlantic swells of 4-8 meters during northwest gale events; the Santuario da Virxe da Barca at Muxía, which stands 10 meters above the sea on bare granite, takes direct wave spray over the church roof in the largest storms. For coastal photography, winter storm conditions on the Costa da Morte produce images that no other Spanish Atlantic location can replicate; the combination of the Cabo Vilán lighthouse, the offshore reefs, and a gale-force northwest sea is specific to this 120-mile section of coast.

Best for: storm photography on the Costa da Morte, A Coruña city (Torre de Hércules, old town, lonxa market without tourist traffic), minimum rental prices.
Skip if: sea swimming and dry walking conditions are priorities. December and January are not walking months on the exposed clifftops.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 54-64°F. Precipitation: declining from March; May averages 65 mm (versus 120 mm in January).

Spring on the Costa da Morte is the most photogenic season for the cliff vegetation: the maritime heathland (uces, Erica vagans and Calluna vulgaris, together with the coastal gorse, Ulex europaeus) turns the clifftops above Cabo Vilán and Punta da Barca a uniform burnt-orange and yellow from March to May before the summer growth cycle dries the tops. The Ría de Ortigueira wader reserve in April hosts the highest individual wader counts of the year as northern-breeding species pass through on the spring migration (godwits, knots, and sandpipers northbound from West Africa).

Where to Refuel and Refill

Fuel Stations

A Coruña fuel pricing: Diesel approximately €1.45-1.65/liter; SP95 approximately €1.50-1.70/liter. Motorway service station prices on the AP-9 run 6-10% above city center stations.
Before the Costa da Morte: Refuel in A Coruña or in Carballo (GPS: 43.2139° N, 8.6913° W, 35 miles west of A Coruña on the AC-552, 35 minutes; the last major town before the coast road becomes single-track). There is no fuel station between Camariñas and Fisterra; fill in Camariñas before the final 40-km coastal section to the cape.
Rías Altas northeast: Ferrol has multiple stations on the approach from the AP-9 exit; next refueling points are Cedeira (50 miles northeast of Ferrol) and Ortigueira (30 miles beyond Cedeira). Fill at Ferrol before the northeast leg.

A Coruña → Porto (320 miles, 3 hours via AP-9 and A-3) — Drive south through Santiago de Compostela and Vigo, cross into Portugal at the Tui-Valença bridge, and follow the A-3 through Braga to Porto. The Cíes Islands ferry from Vigo and the medieval center of Baiona (Carabela Pinta replica, €3) sit directly on this route. Add 2 nights without significant detour.

A Coruña → Bilbao (570 miles, 5 hours via A-8) — The A-8 Cantabrian motorway runs the full north coast east through Oviedo and Santander. Stop at the Prerrománico Asturiano churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo outside Oviedo (both 9th century, UNESCO-listed, free exterior access) and the Picos de Europa access at Cangas de Onís before the final leg to Bilbao.

A Coruña → Madrid (615 miles, 5 hours 45 minutes via A-6) — Southeast through the Galician interior and the Castilian plateau. Why Start Your RV Trip in A Coruña

A Coruña Airport (LCG, GPS: 43.3026° N, 8.3776° W, Avenida de Ángel Senra, 15120 Culleredo, 10 miles southeast of the city center) serves direct routes from Madrid (Iberia, Vueling, Air Nostrum, multiple daily), Barcelona (Vueling, daily), Palma de Mallorca (seasonal), London Heathrow (Iberia, BA, daily), and Frankfurt (Lufthansa, seasonal). For UK visitors, the Brittany Ferries Plymouth to Santander service (vehicle + passengers, 20 hours; ferries from Santander to A Coruña via the A-8 motorway, 110 miles, 1 hour 5 minutes) offers a drive-on-drive-off option that eliminates the LCG leg entirely and lands the vehicle directly in northern Spain.

Three specific factors make A Coruña the right pickup point for the Costa da Morte and Rías Altas circuit. First, no hub in Spain has direct road access to both the Cabo Fisterra headland and the Rías Altas estuaries in a single day's driving; A Coruña is within 2 hours of both. Second, the Torre de Hércules as a city landmark is unique: the only functioning Roman lighthouse in the world, 3 miles from the city center, accessible on foot from any campervan area in the port zone. Third, A Coruña's lonxa (fish market) and the Mercado municipal supply the most cost-effective fresh Galician seafood provisioning of any city on the Atlantic coast: percebes, centolla, and pulpo bought at market price and cooked in the campervan is the single biggest food cost saving available to a self-catering traveler in northwest Spain.
