Our Road Trips Itineraries
Brussels is the only Benelux base that puts the Flemish cities, the Ardennes forest, and cross-border Luxembourg and Netherlands access inside a single circuit without backtracking through a hub city twice. Drive northwest for the canals and belfries of Bruges and Ghent, south for river valleys and beech forest no train reaches, and southeast for a second country entirely.
The Ardennes argument is the one that actually changes how people plan the trip. Villages like Frahan, Rochehaut, and the trailheads around Botrange and the Semois loops have no rail station and, in several cases, no scheduled bus beyond a single daily run. If your itinerary includes the forest interior rather than just the market towns on its edge, a vehicle isn't a convenience, it's the only way in.
Airport logistics are straightforward either way you fly in. Brussels Airport (BRU, Zaventem) sits at GPS 50.9010°N, 4.4844°E, 7.5 miles northeast of the center; the Airport Line train reaches Brussels-Central in around 20 minutes, and a taxi runs 25-35 minutes depending on beltway traffic. Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) sits further out, at GPS 50.4592°N, 4.4538°E, 34 miles south of the center; the Flibco shuttle bus to Brussels-Midi takes roughly an hour. Worth checking your depot's proximity to whichever airport you're using, since CRL puts you notably closer to the Ardennes than BRU does.
Quick reference on what's reachable from a Brussels depot: Bruges 62 miles (1h), Ghent 34 miles (40 min), Antwerp 28 miles (40 min), Dinant 59 miles (1h10), La Roche-en-Ardenne 78 miles (1h30), Bouillon 93 miles (1h45), Hautes Fagnes 81 miles (1h30), Luxembourg City 118 miles (2h), Mullerthal 130 miles (2h15), Maastricht 75 miles (1h20), Lille 71 miles (1h15).
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Brussels rental companies:
Unlimited mileage. A circuit covering Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, the Ardennes, and a Luxembourg detour easily clears 310 miles round trip once you add the scenic drives inside each stop. Competitors capping daily distance at 125-155 miles force you to either cut destinations or pay overage fees; an Indie Campers booking puts no number on the odometer at all.
One-way rentals. Pick up in Brussels and drop off elsewhere entirely, no retracing the route back to the depot. Valid one-way destinations from Brussels are Amsterdam, Paris, Düsseldorf-Essen, Frankfurt, Berlin,
Belgium runs a mild, wet climate with no dramatic seasonal extremes, which makes timing more about events and Ardennes trail conditions than about avoiding bad weather outright.
Spring (March to May)
The Hautes Fagnes bogs come back to life, but spring also brings the boardwalk closures that follow heavy rain; check the Centre Nature de Botrange's status before committing to that leg.
Best for: fewer crowds at Bruges and Ghent, cooler hiking temperatures in the Ardennes.
Skip if: you specifically need the boardwalk loop open across its full length; spring meltwater and rain closures are common through April.
Summer (June to August)
Peak season everywhere, driven partly by Tomorrowland, the electronic music festival held over two weekends in late July in Boom, roughly 28 miles from Brussels and 18.5 miles south of Antwerp. Traffic on the E19 and surrounding roads gets genuinely heavy in the days around the festival, and Ardennes campgrounds book out weeks ahead for the same period. This is also the Ardennes river kayaking window on the Ourthe and Semois.
Best for: river activities, warm evenings for citadel and castle visits.
Skip if: you want to avoid festival traffic and have flexible dates; shifting even a week either side of Tomorrowland weekends clears most of the congestion.
Autumn (September to October)
3 to 5 Days: The Flemish Cities Circuit (approx. 125-137 miles)
7 to 10 Days: Full Belgium Plus the Ardennes and Luxembourg (approx. 340-373 miles)
Follow the 3-5 day circuit through Day 3 in Bruges, then divert south instead of looping back.
Fuel Stations
Belgian diesel runs approximately €1.90-2.05 per liter as of mid-2026, among the higher rates in the EU. Fill up before leaving the E411 corridor for the Ardennes interior: stations thin out fast past Bastogne, and the Semois valley lanes around Rochehaut and Frahan have none at all. The Q8 station on the E411 at Aische-en-Refail (GPS approximately 50.601°N, 4.767°E) is open 24/7 and is the last major stop before the motorway narrows toward Namur. The Total station on Rue de Marche in Bastogne (GPS approximately 50.006°N, 5.715°E) is your last realistic fill before pushing on to Bouillon or the Luxembourg border, since the roads beyond run through forest with only sporadic village pumps.
LPG/Autogas
LPG runs around €0.80 per liter in Belgium, meaningfully cheaper than diesel, but stations carrying it are far less common and concentrated near larger towns and motorway junctions. The Q8 Autocenter on the E25 Liège-Bastogne corridor at Sprimont (GPS approximately 50.505°N, 5.660°E) is a dependable option if routing through the Ardennes via the E25 rather than the E411. Don't count on finding LPG once deep in the Semois valley or on the Botrange approach roads; top up before leaving the E25/E411 corridor.
Dump Stations
The Brussels-Capitale aire, part of the Camping Car Park network, sits inside the Brussels Low Emission Zone, so register your vehicle with lez.brussels before using it. South of the city, the Bastogne aire on Avenue Albert Ier (GPS approximately 50.006°N, 5.714°E) has 15 pitches plus fresh water and black/gray water dump points. The Dinant aire at Parking N°2 de la Citadelle (GPS approximately 50.259°N, 4.910°E) combines dump facilities with riverside parking directly below the citadel. The Yvoir/Spontin aire (GPS approximately 50.353°N, 4.888°E), close to the geographic center of Wallonia, is a well-placed midpoint stop between Dinant and the deeper Ardennes. In Bruges, the municipal RV area (GPS approximately 51.213°N, 3.225°E) charges €25/day October through March and €30/day April through September, including basic services, though it functions as overnight parking rather than a full campground.
Minimum renter age is 21, with a valid credit card in the driver's name required at pickup. Non-EU license holders should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home license, since Belgian traffic police do check both together.
Register for the Brussels LEZ before you arrive, not after. Registration at lez.brussels is free even for fully compliant, Euro 6-standard vehicles, but it's mandatory for every foreign-registered vehicle entering the region, and it needs to be done before crossing into Brussels-Capitale territory, not once already parked at the depot.
The Ardennes require a different driving mindset than the motorway legs. Roads narrow fast once you leave the E411 corridor, particularly around the Semois valley villages, and blind curves are common on the N-roads climbing toward Botrange. Slow down earlier than you think you need to.
Book Ardennes campgrounds well ahead if traveling in July, especially the week Tomorrowland runs, when both Ardennes sites and anything within striking distance of Boom and Antwerp fill up fast; two to three weeks' lead time is the safer bet for that stretch.
Cross-border driving into France, Luxembourg, or the Netherlands is standard territory for an Indie Campers rental: the same 24/7 assistance and Basic Protection Plan travel with you across the border, so a breakdown in the Mullerthal or on the Lille approach gets the same response as one inside Belgium.
Speed Limits
Belgian motorways: 75 mph. Regional roads: 55 mph or lower. Village centers: as low as 20-30 mph, enforced by fixed and mobile radar.
Road Conditions
Belgian motorways are unusually well-lit at night compared to most of Europe, a small but real comfort on long evening drives. The Ardennes N-roads are the opposite: narrow, hilly, and largely unlit past the market towns, with tight bends that reward a slower pace after dark.
Driving Culture
Belgium's defining road rule, priorité à droite, gives right-of-way to traffic entering from the right at unmarked intersections, including in many town centers where visiting drivers wouldn't expect it. This catches out more foreign drivers than any other single rule; watch every side street, not just the main road ahead. Cyclist density is high in every city center, Ghent and Antwerp especially, so checking mirrors before any turn is non-negotiable.
RV-Specific Notes
Ardennes forest roads: width and turning radius matter more than length on the switchbacks around Frahan and Rochehaut. Old-town approaches into Bruges and Ghent: height barriers and narrow bridges rule out anything over roughly 10 ft without checking the specific route first. Weather on the Hautes Fagnes plateau can shift from clear to fog-bound within the hour, cutting visibility on the open N62 stretch near Botrange.
Brussels, Flemish Cities, and Ardennes Circuit (approximately 280-310 miles)
RV rental varies by vehicle category and season; an Adventure or California category vehicle over seven nights in July runs meaningfully higher than the same booking in October, so check current dates directly for an exact figure.
Fuel: at approximately €1.90-2.05/L for diesel and a fuel-efficient RV averaging around 10-12 L/100km, 298 miles of driving works out to roughly 48-58 liters, or approximately €95-115 for the week.
LPG: if your vehicle runs LPG for the stove or fridge rather than diesel for propulsion, that's a separate and much smaller cost at around €0.80/L.
Tolls: zero for the entire week, a real saving compared to the same distance run through France or Germany.
Campgrounds: across seven nights, using Camping Paal near Brussels, Camping Memling in Bruges, Camping Blaarmeersen in Ghent, and Camping Floreal in La Roche-en-Ardenne as a representative mix, averaging roughly €35-40/night, or approximately €245-280 for the week.
Food: for two adults, covering moules-frites and frituur meals a few times alongside grocery-based cooking, plus waffles, chocolate, and a round or two of Trappist beer, approximately €250-350 for the week if mixing restaurant meals with self-catering.
Brussels to Amsterdam: 130 miles via the E19, about 2 hours 15 minutes. The route runs straight through Antwerp and across the Dutch border near Breda, making it easy to fold in a half-day Antwerp stop en route without adding real distance.
Brussels to Paris: 193 miles via the E19/A1, about 3 hours. The drive passes within a short detour of Lille, a natural finish for a trip that's already leaned Ardennes-and-north rather than deep south.
Brussels to Düsseldorf-Essen: 137 miles via the E40/A4, about 2 hours 15 minutes. Runs through Liège and crosses into Germany near Aachen, a natural extension if your Belgium leg already pushed east toward the Hautes Fagnes.
Brussels to Frankfurt:
Brussels works as a starting point because of where it sits, not because of any single attraction inside it. Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp are all under an hour away in three different directions, the Ardennes and a second country, Luxembourg, are two to three hours south, and a third country, the Netherlands, is barely 90 minutes northeast. Few capital-city depots put that much genuine variety, canal cities, forested hill country, and a cross-border finish toward Amsterdam, Paris, Cologne, or Frankfurt, within reach of a single unlimited-mileage booking.
What an RV gets you here that a train or a rental car with a daily mileage cap doesn't is the specific experience of range. Eat lunch on the Grand Place, drive three hours south, and wake up the next morning parked beside the Ourthe in La Roche-en-Ardenne with the sound of the river instead of city traffic. That shift, from a European capital to a forest riverside in an afternoon, is the whole argument for doing this trip in a vehicle rather than stitching together trains and hotel bookings between disconnected stops.
Before you pull out, stop at one of the bakeries near the Grand Place for a coffee and a proper Belgian waffle, buy a bar of chocolate from a shop near the Sablon to eat somewhere better than a service station, then take the E411 south out of the city. That's the departure ritual worth keeping: a warm waffle in hand, chocolate in the cooler, and the Ardennes still three hours ahead of you.
24/7 roadside assistance, included on every booking, matters more in the Ardennes than in the city. If you break down on a forest N-road with no cell signal, the call still goes through once you find a bar of reception, and someone is dispatched regardless of the hour.
Basic Protection Plan, included as standard, with optional upgrades if you want lower excess before tackling the narrower Semois valley lanes.
Flexible cancellation available up to 31 days before pickup, useful if you're timing the trip around Ardennes river levels or waiting to confirm Tomorrowland dates before booking.
Book now, pay later, so you can lock in a July date (Tomorrowland season, when Ardennes campgrounds and even Brussels-area sites fill months out) without paying in full six months ahead.
Best for: Ardennes foliage drives, comfortable hiking temperatures.
Skip if: you're chasing swimmable river water; the Ourthe and Semois cool off fast after September.
Winter (November to February)
Centers on the Marché de Noël (Christmas market) filling the Grand Place and surrounding streets through December, with mulled wine stalls and a temporary ice rink. The Ardennes turn genuinely cold and occasionally icy on the higher N-roads near Botrange.
Best for: Christmas markets, off-season pricing on city campgrounds.
Skip if: your itinerary depends on Ardennes hiking or river access.
The most booked months for Brussels pickups are July and August, driven by both the general summer travel window and Tomorrowland. September runs a close second among travelers prioritizing weather and lower crowds over festival energy.
14+ Days: One-Way Toward Amsterdam, Paris, or Cologne
Run the 10-day circuit above, then instead of returning to Brussels, continue to your drop-off city using one of the confirmed one-way depots. A Brussels-to-Amsterdam finish adds a coastal Netherlands leg; a Brussels-to-Paris finish lets you swing through Lille en route; a Brussels-to-Cologne finish adds the Rhine Valley. Each adds 2-3 driving days plus whatever time you allocate at the destination city itself.
Essential Apps
Download offline maps for the Ardennes stretch before leaving Brussels; cell coverage drops around Botrange and in the deeper Semois valley bends. A fuel-price comparison app is worth running before each fill, since Belgian station prices vary more than expected between motorway and village pumps. A dedicated campsite-booking app helps lock in Ardennes pitches in July, when several sites sell out days in advance.
Blood alcohol limit: 0.5 g/L, enforced with regular checkpoints. A reflective vest and a warning triangle are mandatory equipment in every vehicle. Headlights (low beam) are required whenever visibility drops, not just after dark.
Parking: in Bruges and Ghent's historic centers, using the dedicated RV areas rather than street parking, approximately €25-30/day in Bruges specifically; budget for two or three such days across the trip, or roughly €60-90.
Budget total (7 days, 2 people, excluding vehicle rental): approximately €700-850. Assumes camping at the more affordable end of the range (Bouillon-style pitches rather than pricier Bruges or Ghent sites where avoidable), self-catering most meals with only one or two restaurant stops, and skipping paid activities in favor of free attractions like the Grand Place, Manneken Pis, and the citadel ramparts at Dinant and La Roche.
Mid-range total: approximately €1,100-1,350. Assumes a mix of the named campgrounds above at standard rates, roughly half the meals eaten out (including one proper moules-frites dinner and a waffle stop or two), and the core paid activities: the Atomium, one canal tour, and the Dinant citadel.
Premium total: approximately €1,600-2,000. Assumes the higher-rated riverside pitches at Floreal and Memling, most meals at sit-down restaurants including a dedicated beer-tasting stop at somewhere like Delirium Café, all major paid activities, and daily paid parking in both Bruges and Ghent rather than walking further from a free lot.
Brussels to Berlin: 410 miles via the E40/A2, about 6 hours 30 minutes. A genuine cross-country drive best split with an overnight stop partway; suits travelers linking a Benelux trip with a separate Germany-based rental rather than driving the whole stretch in one push.
Brussels to Hamburg: 298 miles via the E40 then north via the A1, about 5 hours. Useful if your itinerary already routes north through the Netherlands border area near Maastricht before continuing on.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.
