Campervan and RV Rental in Bastia

Bastia is Corsica's principal port city, population 46,867 (INSEE, 2023), positioned at 42.7008°N, 9.4503°E on the northeastern tip of the island at the base of the Cap Corse peninsula. It is the largest city in the Haute-Corse department (2B) and Corsica's primary commercial hub: the ferry terminal processes approximately 2.5 million passengers annually, and the airport handles over 1.4 million per year. For a campervan traveler, this matters. Bastia is where Corsica starts for most visitors arriving by sea or air, and the routing logic from here is immediate: Cap Corse 40 km to the north, the Patrimonio AOC vineyards 20 km to the west, Saint-Florent and the Désert des Agriates coast 24 km across the Col de Teghime, Corte and the mountain interior 68 km south via the N193/T20. All of it within a morning's drive.

The city sits on a narrow coastal shelf between the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east and a granite ridge rising to 963 meters immediately to the west. That compression of geography previews the island's character: Corsica's distances look short on a map, but average realistic speeds on most roads are 30-50 km/h through mountain terrain and hairpins. Budget time, not kilometers.

The Vieux Port (GPS: 42.6945°N, 9.4507°E): the historic core of the city, a compact horseshoe-shaped harbor lined with five- and six-story painted houses in ochre, terracotta, and faded yellow whose facades reflect in the still water before the morning wind arrives. The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Place du Marché, 20200 Bastia; free; open during daylight hours): the largest church in Corsica, twin baroque towers completed in the 17th century, with a Virgin of the Immaculate Conception painted on green agate brought from Rome in 1619 in the south transept. The Place du Marché immediately in front of the church hosts the daily morning market (07:00-12:00): brocciu (the island's PDO-protected fresh sheep's and goat's milk cheese), lonzu, coppa, figatellu, and migliacciole griddle pancakes from producers who arrive before 08:00 and are typically sold out of the best items by 10:30. This is the provisioning stop before heading north on the D80.

What to Do in Bastia

Cap Corse: The Peninsula Circuit, 40-65 km

Cap Corse is a 40-km granite peninsula projecting north from Bastia, 10-15 km wide, with the D80 road encircling it in a full 120-km loop. The east coast (Bastia to the tip) is wider and more manageable for campervans; the west coast is narrower, in places effectively single-track, and requires genuine patience for anything over approximately 5.5-6 meters in length.

East coast to Macinaggio (GPS: 42.9583°N, 9.4533°E, 40 km from Bastia, 50-60 min via the D80 north): the drive passes Erbalunga (GPS: 42.7476°N, 9.4643°E, 10 km north of Bastia, 15 min) — a 15th-century Genoese watchtower standing on a rock platform in the sea, connected to the village by a narrow stone causeway, surrounded by fishing boats. It is the most-photographed 10-minute stop on the cape's east coast; pull into the harbor car park and walk out to the tower base. Continue north through Sisco and Pietracorbara to Macinaggio, the principal fishing port at the northeastern tip of the peninsula and the starting point for the Sentier des Douaniers (Custom Officers' Path): a 13-km coastal trail to Barcaggio at the cape tip, passing the Îles Finocchiarola seabird reserve and a succession of Genoese watchtowers. The trail takes 4 hours one-way; the turnaround at 7 km (approximately 3 hours total) reaches the best coastal views without committing to the full distance.

Cape tip and west coast to Centuri (GPS: 42.9527°N, 9.3502°E, 65 km from Bastia via the full circuit, approximately 1h30): continuing the D80 counterclockwise from Macinaggio past the Giraglia lighthouse, the road changes character immediately on the western descent. The west coast D80 has sections that are effectively single-track, with sea cliffs to one side and maquis-covered hillside to the other, and tour buses use this road in July and August. For campervans over 5.5-6 meters, the west coast section requires slow speed, patience, and advance planning for passing places. Centuri is Corsica's primary lobster-fishing port: a village of roughly 200 people with a small fleet that supplies most of the homard served across the island. In summer, Centuri-Port itself is pedestrianized; large campervans must park at the designated car park at the southern approach to the village and walk 5 minutes to the port. The access from the D80 uses the D35, a 4-km spur road that requires care.

Nonza (GPS: 42.7975°N, 9.3267°E, 45 km from Bastia, approximately 1h15 via the D80): a cluster of stone houses on a cliff edge above a 1.4-km beach of dark gray-black pebbles, with a square Genoese tower at the highest point. The beach's color comes from serpentine rock deposits. The path down from the village takes 5 minutes and drops approximately 80 meters; there is no vehicle access to the beach. Park at the village entrance car park and walk. Allow 2 hours from arrival: the descent, a swim, and the climb back. Nonza is the last significant stop on the D80 west coast before the D81 inland road picks up the Col de Teghime descent toward Bastia.

Col de Teghime and the Nebbio Valley: 15-24 km

The D81 west from Bastia crosses the Cap Corse ridge at the Col de Teghime (approximately 42.7200°N, 9.3900°E, altitude 536 meters, 15 km from Bastia, 20-25 min). The viewpoint at the summit covers both coasts simultaneously: the Bastia bay and the Italian coastline to the east, the Gulf of Saint-Florent and the Désert des Agriates scrubland to the west. It is the single most efficient panoramic stop in northern Corsica and warrants 20 minutes before continuing down to Saint-Florent.

Saint-Florent (GPS: 42.6823°N, 9.3069°E, 24 km from Bastia, 40 min via the D81): a harbor town of approximately 1,600 permanent residents that receives thousands of summer visitors. The 15th-century Genoese citadel stands above the marina; the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (GPS: approximately 42.6820°N, 9.2993°E; Pisan Romanesque, constructed 1125-1140, one of the two finest examples of this architectural tradition in Corsica; free) sits 1.5 km east of the town center on the road toward Patrimonio. From the marina, daily boat taxis and excursion boats run to Saleccia and Lotu, the two most celebrated beaches of the Désert des Agriates — large-scale white-sand beaches with turquoise water reachable only by sea or on foot (the inland Piste des Agriates track is unpaved and unsuitable for rental campervans).

Étang de Biguglia: 8 km from Bastia

Étang de Biguglia (GPS: 42.6246°N, 9.4649°E, Route de l'Étang, 20600 Furiani; eco-museum phone: +33 (0)4 95 33 55 73; eco-museum open Monday to Saturday 08:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00; free exterior access): a 1,790-hectare coastal lagoon entirely within 8 km of Bastia city center, separated from the Tyrrhenian Sea by a narrow sand bar and crossed by the N193/T11 road south of the city. It is the largest wetland in Corsica, RAMSAR-listed, and a breeding and wintering site for over 250 aquatic bird species. Greater flamingos are present year-round; Audouin's Gull (a western Mediterranean endemic with a global breeding population of fewer than 20,000 pairs), Western Marsh Harrier, Whiskered Tern, and European Pond Turtle are among its documented species. The flat 2-km circular trail from the eco-museum entrance takes 45 minutes; the bird hide on the east shore gives the closest flamingo views at the lagoon margin.

Practical logistics: the Étang de Biguglia is a logical 2-hour stop on the way south from Bastia, sitting directly on the N193/T11. The E.Leclerc Furiani supermarket (Zone Commerciale de Furiani) is 500 meters north of the reserve entrance and shares the same turning off the main road — combine birdwatching with provisioning and fueling in a single stop before heading south.

Patrimonio AOC Wine Villages: 20 km from Bastia

Patrimonio (GPS: approximately 42.7127°N, 9.3611°E, approximately 20 km from Bastia, 15-20 min via the D81 and valley road): a village of roughly 600 people in the Conca d'Oru basin between the Col de Teghime ridge and the Gulf of Saint-Florent. In 1968, Patrimonio became the first wine appellation in Corsica to receive AOC status. The vineyard area covers 450 hectares across 7 communes, with 37-plus estates producing three primary varieties: Niellucciu (the local name for a clone of Sangiovese; produces structured reds with cherry and garrigue notes best served at 16°C), Vermentinu (white; saline, bone-dry, typically 13% ABV, the reference white of the northern Corsican coast), and Muscat à Petit Grains (for the separate Cap Corse Muscat AOC, a fortified dessert wine). The wine route is fully signposted; estate approach roads are generally accessible for campervans. The same bottles available at cellar-door prices cost 30-40% more in Bastia restaurants.

The standard half-day loop from Bastia: D81 south to the Col de Teghime viewpoint (15 km, 20 min), down to Patrimonio for a tasting (20 km, add 1 hour), continue 5 km to Saint-Florent for lunch at the marina, return via D81. Total circuit approximately 60 km, 3-4 hours including stops.

Corte and the Mountain Interior: 68 km

Corte (GPS: approximately 42.3040°N, 9.1490°E, 68 km from Bastia via the N193/T20, approximately 1h10): the only inland city in Corsica, population approximately 7,500, at the confluence of three mountain river valleys. Corte served as the capital of the Corsican Republic under Pascal Paoli from 1755 to 1769 before the French annexation of 1768. The citadel — visible from the approach road on a granite rock needle above the valley floor — and the Musée de la Corse inside it are the two main sites.

Gorges du Tavignano (trailhead GPS: 42.3084°N, 9.1468°E, at the base of the citadel toward Rue Paoli; large free parking near the university): a 12.2-km out-and-back trail along granite river gorges following the ancient mule track of the Mare à Mare Nord long-distance route. Walking time approximately 4h30 return. Natural granite swimming pools at the Russulinu footbridge (6 km from the trailhead): 2-4 meters deep, water at 16-18°C in July and August, the clearest freshwater swimming in the northern circuit. The Tavignano gorge is less visited than the Restonica; before 10:00 even in August you will typically have the first pools to yourself.

Restonica Valley note: the D623 from Corte toward the Restonica gorge narrows to single-track within 2 km and is not suitable for campervans. From July 1 to September 15, a shuttle bus runs from Corte to the Bergeries de Grotelle (the trailhead for Lac de Melo at 1,711 meters).

Col de Bavella and the Southern Aiguilles: 200 km from Bastia

Col de Bavella (GPS: approximately 41.7453°N, 9.2202°E, altitude 1,218 meters, D268 between Solenzara and Zonza, approximately 200 km from Bastia via the N198/T10 east coast, 3h30-4h drive): the most dramatic mountain pass in Corsica, surrounded by the Aiguilles de Bavella — a succession of granite needle towers rising 150-200 meters above the road. At the summit: a white marble statue of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, a large car park, and the start of marked trails into the Laricio pine forest.

The Trou de la Bombe (marked trail, 4-km round trip, approximately 2 hours, easy to moderate): a natural arch 15 meters in diameter eroded through a granite blade of the Aiguilles, reached through pine forest with minimal elevation gain. No permit, no entry fee. The col car park fills before 10:00 on peak summer days; arrive before 09:00 or after 16:00.

Campervan suitability: the D268 is fully paved and accessible for campervans under approximately 7 meters. Gradients reach 10.8% on some sections; use low gear on descents.

Our Road Trips Itineraries

Why Rent an RV in Bastia

Corsica's transport reality is straightforward: there are no motorways, no inter-city rail network serving tourist routes (the Bastia-Ajaccio scenic railway takes 3h30 and carries no practical luggage volume for a week-long trip), and limited public bus coverage of the interior and secondary coastal roads. Cap Corse has no scheduled public transport beyond a summer minibus to Macinaggio. The Désert des Agriates coast is reachable only by boat or on foot. The Patrimonio wine estates are not on any bus route. None of the trailheads for the major gorge walks have public transport access in the hours you actually want to start walking.

The specific case for an RV from Bastia is the geographic variety within a compact northern circuit. The Étang de Biguglia flamingo reserve (8 km south), the Erbalunga Genoese sea tower (10 km north), the cape tip at Macinaggio (40 km), Nonza's black pebble beach on the opposite coast (45 km), Patrimonio wine estates (20 km west), Saint-Florent marina and the Agriates boat taxis (24 km), and Corte's granite gorge swimming pools (68 km) are all accessible in a 7-day loop without doubling back.

The additional Corsica-specific argument is campsite quality. The island's licensed campsites are, by French mainland standards, unusually well-positioned: beachfront or near-beach, shaded by maritime pines, at prices that reflect location rather than facilities alone. Camping San Damiano (9 km south of Bastia, 300 pitches with electricity, kilometer-long sandy beach, from approximately €84/night) is better-placed for a natural circuit start than most hotels in the city and costs less for a couple than one night in a Bastia waterfront property.

Why Choose Indie Campers in Bastia

Unlimited mileage: A full northern Corsica circuit covering the Cap Corse loop (120 km), Patrimonio, Saint-Florent, and Corte covers 350-450 km. Extending south to Col de Bavella and back adds approximately 400 km. No daily distance counter regardless of route.

One-way rentals: Pick up in Bastia and drop off at any Indie Campers location in mainland France, including Nice (~200 km by ferry + road), Marseille, Lyon, or Toulouse. For those exploring the island, Bastia is the sole Corsican location, so the trip typically starts and ends here. Corsica's 700-plus km of coastline and winding mountain roads make it a natural loop destination, and Bastia's location near the ferry terminal and Poretta Airport makes it the ideal gateway.

24/7 roadside assistance: Included on every booking. All standard Corsica circuit routes are within coverage.

Best Time to Rent an RV in Bastia

Winter (December to February)

Temperatures in Bastia: 8-14°C. The Corsican coast takes its highest annual rainfall in November-December; January and February are drier with frequent clear days.

The northern circuit in winter is operational for everything except sea swimming and high-altitude passes. Cap Corse village restaurants and épiceries stay open year-round on reduced hours; Patrimonio estates receive tasting visits outside harvest season with more time per visitor than in summer. The Étang de Biguglia is accessible year-round; bird species diversity is highest in winter. The Col de Bavella (1,218 m) closes with snow from December to March; the mountain interior above 1,000 meters should not be assumed accessible without current road condition checks.

Best for: Étang de Biguglia birdlife in low winter light, Vieux Port and Terra Nova without tourist traffic, Patrimonio estate visits with tasting attention, minimum prices.
Skip if: sea swimming is a requirement or you need guaranteed access to Bavella and the high-altitude interior.

Spring (March to May)

Temperatures: 12-20°C. Precipitation: decreasing through April and May.

Spring is the best season for walking in Corsica. The maquis — the dense aromatic scrubland of cistus, myrtle, arbutus, rockrose, and lavender covering the lower slopes of Cap Corse and the Nebbio — is in full flower from March to May. The scent is strongest from late morning when the sun has warmed the ground; driving the D80 with the windows down in April, you smell the island before you see most of it. The Sentier des Douaniers from Macinaggio is uncrowded; Patrimonio estates and Saint-Florent restaurants are fully operational; ferry services increase frequency from March and campsites open from late March or early April.

Where to Refuel and Refill in Bastia

Fuel Stations

Fuel prices in Corsica run approximately 10-15% above mainland French averages; supermarket stations are the cheapest on the island by a consistent margin. Fill before leaving Bastia for any major circuit. You will not find cheaper fuel once you leave the commercial zone.

E.Leclerc Furiani (Zone Commerciale de Furiani, approximately 8 km south of Bastia city center, adjacent to the N193/T11; GPS:; Monday to Saturday approximately 08:30-20:30, Sunday 09:00-13:00): the lowest fuel prices on the island. The same stop serves the Étang de Biguglia reserve entrance, 500 meters south on the same road.

Before the Cap Corse circuit: Fill at Leclerc Furiani or at Bastia city stations before heading north on the D80. There are small fuel stations at villages on the east coast of the cap (Sisco, Pietracorbara area), but supply is limited and hours are irregular, particularly on the west coast. Do not count on fuel between Macinaggio and the D81 junction at the Col de Teghime approach.

Before Corte and the interior: Fill in Bastia or Corte town. The N193/T20 mountain section between Bastia and Corte has no fuel for approximately 68 km. Corte has a fuel station. Before heading west from Corte toward the Niolo valley or Lac de Nino, fill in Corte; there is no fuel for 40-60 km on the D84.

Why Start Your RV Trip in Bastia?

Bastia-Poretta Airport (BIA, GPS: 42.5500°N, 9.4847°E, 16-17 km from the city) gives direct access from London Gatwick via easyJet (seasonal, 2h15), from six German cities via Eurowings, from Frankfurt and Munich via Lufthansa, and from Copenhagen and Stockholm via Norwegian. For a UK or German visitor, BIA removes the mainland France transit that an Ajaccio or Calvi start requires: a 3-4 hour saving that matters on a 7-10 day rental.

Three specific reasons Bastia is the correct pickup point for a Corsica circuit. First, the pick up center is, making a same-day start possible for afternoon arrivals. Second, Bastia is the northern origin of both primary island road trip axes: north on the D80 to Cap Corse and south on the N193/T20 to Corte and the interior. Both leave the city limits within 10 minutes of the depot; there is no preliminary transit driving. Third, the Place du Marché morning market (07:00-12:00, daily) is steps from the Vieux Port; an 08:00 provisioning stop on departure day covers brocciu, lonzu, charcuterie, and canistrelli before the first night at a Cap Corse campsite.
