The richness of this city is also to be found in its extensive architectural heritage. The business district of Part-Dieu is totally different from the charm of Vieux-Lyon and its famous traboules (pedestrian passages underneath the houses). The Place Bellecour, the Cathedral of Saint-Jean, and the Croix Rousse district also bear witness to the city's history.
Being built along the Rhône and located between the Massif-Central and the Alps, Lyon is the crossroads of south-eastern France. Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport is located 25 km east of the city and welcomes travelers from EasyJet, Air France, or British Airways. While the A42 highway comes from the east, the A6 and A5 motorways come from the north and south of the city respectively. In addition, the N6 national road offers an alternative for travelers arriving from the north of the city. For those traveling by train, the Lyon Part-Dieu or Lyon Perrache are the two most relevant stations.
The city center has numerous car parks, such as the 24/24h Indigo de Bellecourt. An hour's parking costs £2.20/€2.60, while a full day costs £30/€35. For this reason, it is preferable to park your RV rental in Lyon at the Zen Park Part-Dieu near the station, which offers a rate of £14/€16 for the day. Further out, the Zen Park at the Vais station to the west and the Grange Blanche to the east allows you to avoid the dense traffic in the city center.
Before traveling to Lyon with your campervan, it is best to book your place at a campsite.
The weather in Lyon varies greatly, depending on the season. The city is located in the middle of the Rhône valley, which subjects it to the winds of the Midi, but a continental climate prevails. However, the Mediterranean Sea is only 200 km away and brings its share of precipitation, especially in the summer.
Winters in the south-eastern city are rather dry and cold. January is the coldest month of the year, with an average temperature of 3°C. In addition, winter frosts are common during this period. Despite more regular precipitation, spring offers very mild weather conditions. The people of Lyon enjoy this period to take advantage of the city's various parks and to stroll along the banks of the Rhône. On the other hand, summer temperatures can be very high. In July, the average temperature is 22°C with peaks of up to 27°C. These high temperatures, combined with high humidity, favor thunderstorms, especially at the end of the day.
The geographical location of the former capital of France makes it a very dynamic city. Located near the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, the metropolis attracts many visitors. The famous Festival of Lights in December shows that the city remains lively even in winter. Nevertheless, June is the best month to rent a campervan in Lyon, with fewer visitors and temperatures that do not yet reach extremes.
