Our Road Trips Itineraries
The argument for a Düsseldorf pickup is the multi-country reach without a long drive.
From almost every other German campervan pick up centre, an international one-way circuit requires 2-4 hours of Autobahn before the first foreign border. From Düsseldorf, you cross into the Netherlands in 45 minutes, into Belgium in 55 minutes, and into Luxembourg in 2 hours. The French border at Aachen is under 1 hour. This is the only German location where a 7-day itinerary can realistically cover Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg in a single circuit that does not feel rushed, because the border distances are short enough that each country gets 1-2 proper days rather than a half-day transit.
The second argument is Düsseldorf Airport (DUS). It handles 22-25 million passengers annually and is connected to the city centre in 8 minutes by the S-Bahn. Fly in from London, Dubai,
Unlimited kilometres: The Düsseldorf-to-Amsterdam one-way is 230 miles. The Rhine-Eifel-Ardennes triangle circuit from the Indie Campers pick up centre covers approximately 800 miles. No daily cap means the itinerary decisions are geographical, not mathematical.
One-way hire across 100+ locations: Pick up in Düsseldorf, drop off in Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Berlin, or any European location. The Düsseldorf-to-
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures: 4-16°C (39-61°F)
The Eifel Maar lakes reach swimable temperatures only from late June; spring visits are for the visual quality of the crater lakes and the moorland wildflower sequence. The Gemündener Maar water is glassy and cold in April, reflecting the beech forest rim without a single swimmer. Dutch tulip fields in the Bollenstreek region (Noord-Holland, 260 miles northwest, 2 hours 30 minutes) peak from the third week of April through the first week of May; the campervan timing question for tulips is precise and non-negotiable. Düsseldorf's Japanviertel (Immermannstraße area, GPS: 51.2215° N, 6.7871° E) hosts a Japantag (Japan Day) festival in late May with approximately 1 million visitors on the Rhine Uferpromenade; useful context for planning, not a reason to avoid the city. Sauerland campsite infrastructure opens progressively from April 1st; the highest sites above 700 metres confirm opening dates year-by-year.
Best for: Dutch tulip fields (time precisely for late April), Eifel lake landscapes before crowds, Cologne Cathedral without summer tour groups.
Skip if: You want Eifel lake swimming. The water is too cold for comfortable swimming before late June.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures: 17-28°C (63-82°F)
The Maar lakes swim from late June through September. The Biggesee and Rursee reservoirs run watersports from July through August. Düsseldorf's Rhine Uferpromenade comes alive from June: outdoor bars along the riverbank from the Altstadt south to the MedienHafen operate until 1:00 a.m. The Schützenfest, Düsseldorf's traditional marksmen's festival, typically runs in late July (10 days, check schaetze-dus.de for annual dates) with approximately 4 million visitors and the largest funfair in the Rhineland on the fairground north of the city; road access around the fairground area is disrupted during the festival window.
3 to 5 Days
Rhine and Eifel Circuit (approx. 420 miles, 4 days)
Münsterland and Ruhr (approx. 280 miles, 3 days)
Fuel Stations
Düsseldorf city prices run 5-8 cents per litre below Autobahn service stations. Fill before any motorway leg.
Age and Licence Requirements
Minimum hire age: 21 years.
EU licence holders: Valid in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France without additional documentation.
International visitors (non-EU): An International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence is recommended for Germany and required in Switzerland for non-EU licence holders. Obtain your IDP before departure; it is not available at any of the three Düsseldorf-area airports.
Credit Card and Deposit
A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pickup. The security deposit varies by vehicle class and protection plan.

LPG/Propane: €10-25 (single refill if needed; fill in Düsseldorf or Euskirchen before the Eifel)

Düsseldorf → Amsterdam (230 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes via A3 and Dutch A2): The shortest meaningful international one-way in the Indie Campers European network. Natural stops: Arnhem Airborne Museum (110 miles, 1 hour 10 minutes), Hoge Veluwe National Park and Kröller-Müller Museum (120 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes). Drop off at the Indie Campers Amsterdam.
Düsseldorf → Brussels (230 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes via A3 and Belgian E40): West through Aachen and the Belgian motorway network. Natural stops: Aachen Cathedral UNESCO (80 miles, 55 minutes, free exterior, treasury €5 adults), Liège city centre (130 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes, Place du Marché and the Sunday morning Batte market along the Meuse). Drop off at the Indie Campers Brussels.
Düsseldorf → Frankfurt (230 miles, 2 hours via A3): South through Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz, and the Rhine plain. Natural stop: Cologne Cathedral (45 miles, 35 minutes, tower €6 adults), Koblenz Deutsches Eck (120 miles, 1 hour 15 minutes). Drop off at the Indie Campers Frankfurt.
The airport argument comes first because it is the most practical. DUS is one of Germany's main international gateways. It is 8 minutes from the city centre by S-Bahn and 20 minutes from the depot. The sequence from flight to vehicle is faster here than at any other NRW starting point, and NRW is the most populous German state, meaning you are starting from the middle of the largest population and transport concentration in the country.
The geographic argument is the Benelux border proximity. No other German campervan depot puts you this close to three national borders simultaneously. Within 45 minutes northwest you are in the Netherlands. Within 55 minutes southwest you are in Belgium. Within 2 hours you are in Luxembourg. These are not aspirational day trips. They are the first night of a proper multi-country circuit that covers genuinely different food cultures, different languages, different war history, and different landscapes before most European campervan circuits have cleared their first national border.
The evening argument is the Altstadt. Two days in Düsseldorf before departure is the right preparation for any road trip starting in NRW, not because the city is underrated (it is not especially underrated), but because the Altbier circuit and the Carlsplatz morning provision run are practical pleasures that put you in a specific, grounded travel mindset before the vehicle keys are in your hand. Sit at the bar at Uerige with a wooden-keg Altbier in a 0.25-litre Stange at 5 p.m., eat Halve Hahn on rye bread, watch the Kellner move through the room with the tray. Wake up the next morning, walk to Carlsplatz at 8:00 a.m., buy bread and NRW cheese and a bottle of something from the Moselle Luxembourg section of the wine stall. Then collect the vehicle. The A3 south to Cologne takes 35 minutes and the Kölner Dom is on your left as you exit the motorway. That is the specific rhythm a Düsseldorf departure produces, and it is a rhythm that starts well.
The third argument is the Altstadt. Two nights in Düsseldorf before departure, the Altbier circuit, a morning at the Kunstsammlung NRW K20 (Grabbeplatz 5, GPS: 51.2252° N, 6.7823° E, €12 adults, Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday until 9:00 p.m., weekends 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) with Picasso's 88-work collection and Paul Klee's largest concentrated museum presence in Germany, and a morning at the Carlsplatz market (Bilkerstraße/corner Carlsplatz, GPS: 51.2197° N, 6.7764° E, Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) for provisioning before collecting the vehicle. This is a specific city sequence that rewards taking two days rather than one before departure.
Convenient for Essen and the wider Ruhr area: The pick up centre sits between Düsseldorf and Essen, approximately 15 minutes from Essen Hauptbahnhof. Travellers from Bochum, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, or Duisburg collect from the same location.
24/7 road assistance: Included on every booking. The Eifel National Park and the Sauerland upland roads are remote enough that breakdown cover has practical value.
Basic Protection Plan included: Active from the first day. Upgrade options available at booking.
Flexible cancellation available: Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.
Book now, pay later: Reserve the vehicle today with no full payment required immediately.
Best for: Eifel lake swimming, Sauerland hiking, Dutch coast and Wadden Sea, Rhine Gorge with full campsite availability, Altstadt evening ambiance.
Skip if: You need campsite walk-in availability. The Rhine Gorge and Eifel sites fill weeks ahead in July and August; book well in advance.
Autumn (September to October)
Temperatures: 9-20°C (48-68°F)
The Sauerland beech forest colour peaks in mid-October on the Kahler Asten plateau and the Rothaarsteig ridge; the reds and golds on the schist slopes last approximately 3 weeks. The Eifel deciduous forest colour follows one week later, giving the Maar crater rims their most dramatic appearance of the year, the beech canopy at full colour reflected in the glassy lake surface. Eifel campsite prices drop 20-30% after September 15th with no reduction in access quality. The Cologne Dom Leuchten (Cathedral illumination event) runs in September.
Best for: Sauerland and Eifel autumn colour, Münsterland castle circuit without summer tour groups, wine harvest day trips to Cologne's Rhenish wine bars, Rursee and Biggesee with calm water and lower campsite pricing.
Skip if: You want Eifel lake swimming. Water temperatures drop below comfortable by late September.
Winter (November to February)
Temperatures: -3 to 6°C (27-43°F)
Düsseldorf Weihnachtsmarkt runs across five locations including the Altmarkt, Schadowstraße, Carlsplatz, and the historic Stiftsplatz; the Altmarkt market directly behind the Rathaus (GPS: 51.2263° N, 6.7765° E) dates in its current form to 1946 and occupies the medieval square between the Altstadt and the ring road. The Cologne Cathedral Christmas market (Roncalliplatz, GPS: 50.9413° N, 6.9583° E) is 35 minutes south and the better choice for atmosphere; combining Düsseldorf Altbier with a Cologne Dom night visit in the same evening is a practical one-night itinerary from the depot. Winterberg ski season opens in December, with reliable snow on the Kahler Asten above 700 metres; the access roads are gritted and ploughed, and Indie Campers vehicles are equipped with winter tyres from October through April.
Best for: Düsseldorf Christmas market, Cologne Cathedral in winter light, Winterberg skiing in December and January, Burg Vischering in the Münsterland without any visitors at all.
Skip if: You plan extended outdoor activity in the Eifel above 500 metres without cold-weather gear. The Hohes Venn moor plateau on the Belgian border carries snow from November through March.
The most popular months for Düsseldorf campervan hire are June, July, August, and September.

Driving Culture
Germany's Autobahn right-lane rule (§7 StVO) applies: right lane when not overtaking, return immediately after passing. NRW enforcement of this rule is consistent; mobile units operate on the A1 and A3.
Dutch driving culture: Dutch motorists change lanes with minimal mirror checking at motorway speeds; maintain larger following distances than on German roads and expect left-lane filtering from both directions.
Belgian ring roads (Brussels R0, Antwerp R1): among the most congested in Europe during morning and evening peak hours. Avoid Brussels R0 between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. and between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. on weekdays.
Düsseldorf Stadtbahn (U-Bahn): surface crossings on Heinrich-Heine-Allee and Benrather Straße require campervans to yield before turns; tram priority applies at all surface crossings.
Campervan-Specific Notes
Leverkusen Bridge (A1): Currently under construction with potential weight restrictions for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on certain lanes. Check autobahn.de for current access status before any A1/A3 southbound routing toward Cologne.
Height: Düsseldorf city-centre car parks clear 1.9-2.2 metres. Use Rhine bank Stellplätze or P+R facilities on the ring road and access the centre by U-Bahn (VRR day ticket, €8.10, covers all U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and tram within Düsseldorf city zones).
Dutch motorway cameras: Traject controle average-speed sections are marked by signs at the start and end of each section. The system records entry and exit time over the monitored distance; consistent 5 mph over the limit triggers a fine on the average. Drive at the posted limit throughout any marked section.
Belgian LEZ zones: Register your hire vehicle's registration plate at the Brussels LEZ portal (lez.brussels) and the Antwerp/Ghent portal (mijnlezvoertuig.be) before entering those cities. The registration is free; the fine for non-registration is not.
Parking: €0-20 (Eifel and Sauerland Stellplätze €8-15/night; Düsseldorf city centre not practical for campervans; P+R on Düsseldorf ring road €3-5/day)
Budget: approx. €900 -- Compact vehicle, full self-catering from Carlsplatz and Kaufland, Stellplätze throughout the Eifel and Sauerland at €8-15/night, German-only routing with no international border crossings, free attractions (Maar lake walks, Pulvermaar rim, Rothaarsteig day section, Monschau old town exterior, Rhine Uferpromenade), one K20 museum entry and one Zeche Zollverein visit.
Mid-range: approx. €1,700 -- Mid-size vehicle, three Altbier evenings in Düsseldorf and one Kölsch evening in Cologne, Eifel campsites with hookups, Dutch campsites via Campercontact at €20-25/night, Hoge Veluwe park and Kröller-Müller, Arnhem Airborne Museum, Burg Vischering, Schloss Nordkirchen, Carlsplatz provisioning throughout.
Premium: approx. €2,800+ -- Larger motorhome, restaurant meals including Uerige Sauerbraten dinner, Belgian Ardennes extension with Bastogne museum, Luxembourg city overnight, Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank Huis in Amsterdam, Amsterdam P+R overnight, optional Keukenhof (spring only), one-way drop-off at Indie Campers Amsterdam depot.
Düsseldorf sits at the lower end of German campervan trip cost benchmarks. Dutch and Belgian campsite pricing is competitive with NRW rates, the Benelux motorway network carries zero tolls for campervans, and the Eifel Stellplatz network is among the most affordable in western Germany. The primary cost variables are the length of the Netherlands extension and whether the trip includes Amsterdam (higher accommodation and activity costs) or stays in the Dutch countryside (significantly lower).
Düsseldorf → Stuttgart (400 miles, 3 hours 30 minutes via A3/A5 or A61): South via Cologne and the Rhine valley. Natural stops: Cologne, Rhine Gorge, Heidelberg (GPS: 49.4099° N, 8.7153° E, €9 adults; 270 miles from Düsseldorf via A3/A5, 2 hours 30 minutes). Drop off at the Indie Campers Stuttgart.
Düsseldorf → Hamburg (390 miles, 3 hours 30 minutes via A1 and A7): North via Münster and Osnabrück. Natural stop: Münster Prinzipalmarkt and Lambertikirche. Drop off at the Indie Campers Hamburg.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at indiecampers.com at the time of booking.
