Indie Campers offers compact vans and fully equipped motorhomes with unlimited kilometres, flexible one-way routes, 24/7 online assistance, and thoughtful extras like bedding kits, kitchen gear, or outdoor furniture. With a trusted fleet across Europe and thousands of 4.7-star reviews, Indie Campers makes exploring Belgium easy, flexible, and full of charm.

Campervan Road Trips across Belgium

Belgium rewards a road trip in a way its size doesn't suggest. At 30,528 km², it's one of the more compact countries in our network, but that footprint is exactly why a campervan works so well here. From our single Belgian depot in Brussels, you can reach the medieval canals of Bruges in about an hour, the granite ridgelines of the Ardennes in under two, and the North Sea coast in roughly the same time.
What makes Belgium distinct isn't scale, it's contrast. Flanders in the north gives you Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp: UNESCO-listed old towns, canals, and a diamond and fashion trade running back centuries. Wallonia in the south is the Ardennes' river valleys, limestone gorges, and beech forest, with villages like Bouillon, Dinant, and Durbuy. Brussels sits between the two, bilingual and dense with EU institutions, comic-strip murals, and a food culture built on waffles, double-fried fries, and one of the world's densest brewery scenes.
Because Belgium has just one Indie Campers depot, in Brussels, this isn't a country for a domestic one-way loop the way France or Italy allow. Instead, Belgium works best as a hub: a short, dense trip on its own, or the first or last leg of a longer cross-border route into the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, or Germany. Every booking includes unlimited kilometres, 24/7 road assistance, the Basic Protection Plan, flexible cancellation up to 31 days before pickup, and book now, pay later terms.

Why Hire a Campervan in Belgium

Belgium charges no motorway toll for passenger vehicles or campervans under 3.5 tonnes, full stop, a genuine cost advantage over France's péage network or Switzerland's mandatory vignette. For a trip likely to cross at least one border, that toll-free stretch inside Belgium adds up fast.

A campervan also solves Belgium's accommodation math better than most people expect: Bruges and Ghent hotel rooms in the old town run high for small rooms with no parking, while a serviced campsite twenty minutes out costs a fraction of that. In the Ardennes, where villages like Bouillon have limited hotel stock in summer, a self-contained vehicle removes that dependency entirely.

The country's compactness is the third argument. Brussels sits roughly at the geographic centre, so a coastal day, a Bruges or Ghent day, and an Ardennes day fit inside one week without excessive driving. Belgium borders four countries within a two-and-a-half hour drive of Brussels, turning a small country into a springboard for a much bigger trip.

Why Choose Indie Campers in Belgium

  • Unlimited kilometres, no daily cap, useful given how often a Belgium trip crosses into neighboring countries.
  • 24/7 road assistance included, useful on narrower Ardennes roads.
  • Basic Protection Plan included, with optional upgrades.
  • Flexible cancellation available up to 31 days before pickup, no penalty.
  • Book now, pay later option available.
  • One-way access to multiple European locations, making Brussels a genuine trip start rather than a loop-back point.
  • Identical fleet standards and support across every depot in the network.

Iconic Road Trips in Belgium

  • The Flemish Triangle: Brussels loop through Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp, ~250 km, 3-4 days. Best season: May, June, September. One-way: not applicable, returns to Brussels.
  • The Ardennes River Route: Brussels to Bouillon via Dinant, La Roche-en-Ardenne, Durbuy, ~150 km. Best season: May, June, October. One-way: not applicable.
  • The Hautes Fagnes High Route: Brussels loop via Spa, Malmedy, Signal de Botrange, ~260 km round trip. Best season: June-September. One-way: not applicable.
  • The Coast Road: Brussels loop via Ostend, De Haan, Knokke-Heist, ~230 km round trip. Best season: June, July, September. One-way: not applicable.
  • The Bastogne and Mullerthal Extension: Brussels via Bouillon, Bastogne, Martelange to Luxembourg, ~400 km round trip. Best season: May, June, September. One-way: no depot in Luxembourg, so it returns to Brussels.
  • The Grand Cross-Border Run: Brussels to Amsterdam, Paris, or Cologne. One-way: yes, see below.

Best Time to Hire a Campervan in Belgium

Spring (April-May): 10-16°C, rain spread across weeks, Bruges/Ghent quieter than summer. Ardennes stays cooler and wetter longer. Best for city trips and lower campsite prices; skip if set on beach time.

Summer (June-August): 20-24°C, peak season nationwide. Coast busiest, Tomorrowland (late July, Boom, ~45 km from Brussels) congests the E19 and books out Ardennes/Antwerp campsites weeks ahead. Best for coastal days; skip if you want quiet Bruges/Ghent. Book coastal campsites a month ahead.

Autumn (September-October): 12-18°C easing to 8-12°C, rain picks up in October. Ardennes foliage peaks in October; Brussels Comic Strip Festival runs in September. Best for foliage and crowd-free cities.

Winter (November-March): 2-7°C, damp and grey. Brussels' Winterpret Christmas market runs through December. Many smaller Ardennes/coastal campsites close for the season. Best for a short Brussels Christmas-market stop; skip if you need extensive camping.

Most popular months: June through September, with July-August peak and May/September the better-value shoulder.

How Many Days Do You Need in Belgium

7 to 10 days:
Day 1: pick up in Brussels, Grand Place and Atomium, overnight near Grimbergen. Day 2: Ghent (55 km, 40 min). Day 3: Bruges (~45 km from Ghent). Day 4: Antwerp (~90 km from Bruges), register for its LEZ. Day 5: Dinant (~160 km from Antwerp), Citadel and Meuse riverside. Day 6: La Roche-en-Ardenne or Durbuy. Day 7: Bouillon, castle and Semois viewpoints. Days 8-10 (extending): Bastogne, or a day into Luxembourg's Mullerthal.

14 to 16 days: Add two full coast days (Ostend/De Haan, using the Kusttram) and a proper two-night Martelange stay to cover both Bastogne and the Mullerthal without rushing.

21+ days: Belgium becomes a hub. Week one: Flemish cities and coast. Week two: Ardennes and Luxembourg border at a slow pace. Week three: a one-way cross-border leg (Amsterdam, Paris, or Cologne) instead of looping back.

Where to Fly Into Belgium for a Campervan Trip

  • Brussels Airport (BRU), Zaventem, ~12 km northeast of the city. The main international hub. ~20-25 minutes to the depot.
  • Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL), ~50 km south of Brussels, mainly budget carriers. ~50 minutes to an hour to the depot; factor in a transfer since public transit links take longer.

Tips for Renting a Campervan in Belgium

  • Register for Brussels' LEZ online at lez.brussels before driving in, even same-day; the fine applies for not registering, regardless of emissions compliance.
  • Register separately for Antwerp's and Ghent's LEZ if your route includes either city.
  • Park outside Bruges and Ghent's historic cores; the streets aren't built for a campervan.
  • Learn priorité à droite before you drive.
  • Book coastal and Antwerp-area campsites well ahead for late July, especially around Tomorrowland.
  • Fuel up before heading deep into the Ardennes; stations thin out near smaller villages.
  • Keep an offline map for the Ardennes, where cell signal drops in some valleys.
  • Factor in Channel-crossing booking time for a London or London Luton one-way drop-off.
  • Check the young-driver policy if any driver is under 23-25.
  • Plan your route as a loop back to Brussels unless you've booked an international one-way.

Driving in Belgium: What You Need to Know

Licence and age: a full licence held at least a year is standard; drivers under 23-25 may face a young-driver surcharge. Non-EU holders should carry an International Driving Permit.

Speed limits: motorways 120 km/h, regional roads 90 km/h (lower through the Ardennes), town centres 50 km/h down to 30 km/h in designated zones. Enforcement is active via fixed and mobile radar.

Toll roads: no motorway toll for standard passenger vehicles or campervans under 3.5 tonnes, a real saving versus France's péage or Switzerland's vignette. The kilometre charge applies only to trucks over 3.5 tonnes.

Belgium-specific rules: priorité à droite (voorrang van rechts), priority to the right, is Belgium's defining rule at unmarked intersections; it catches the most foreign drivers. LEZ zones cover Brussels (entire region, all 19 communes, camera-enforced, register at lez.brussels before entering, even if compliant), Antwerp, and Ghent separately; a Brussels registration doesn't cover the other two.

Campervan-specific rules: overnight parking in city-centre public lots is generally not permitted for larger vehicles; use a campsite or designated motorhome area instead.

BAC limit: 0.5 g/L (0.05%) for standard licence holders, enforced via routine and targeted checkpoints, with fines and potential licence suspension for violations.

Estimated Costs for a Belgium Campervan Trip

Budget total: ~€910. Mid-range total: ~€1,340. Premium total: ~€1,660.

14-day trip: Vehicle hire (14 nights): €980-1,820. Fuel (~1,400-1,800 km): €190-290. Campsites (12 nights): €240-420. Food and groceries: €300-550. Attractions: €120-220.
Budget total: ~€1,830. Mid-range total: ~€2,650. Premium total: ~€3,300.

One-Way Hire in Belgium

Belgium has exactly one Indie Campers depot, in Brussels, so there is no domestic one-way route: you can't pick up in Brussels and drop off in Bruges, Ghent, or Antwerp, since none of those cities has a depot. Any loop within Belgium returns to Brussels.

International one-way, from Brussels only:

  • Amsterdam - ~210 km, ~2h15
  • Paris - ~310 km, ~3h
  • Düsseldorf-Essen - ~220 km, ~2h15
  • Frankfurt - ~400 km, ~4h
  • Berlin - ~660 km, ~6h30
  • Hamburg - ~480 km, ~5h
