Our Road Trips Itineraries
Tromsø's Arctic location means you're accessing landscapes and phenomena that exist nowhere else in Europe. Here's what you can reach:
Here's what sets us apart:
Depends entirely on your goal: Midnight Sun (May-July) or Northern Lights (September-March). Tromsø has two completely different tourist seasons.
Polar Night & Northern Lights Season (November to February)
Daylight: November 27-January 15 = Polar Night (sun never rises, twilight 10am-2pm)
Temperatures: -5 to -15°C, can drop to -25°C
Conditions: Snow, ice, frequent storms
Northern Lights prime season. December-January offer most darkness (18-20 hours/night) = maximum aurora viewing time. Clear, cold nights best for aurora (check forecasts—clouds block view). Tromsø averages 20-25 clear nights per month in winter, giving good odds. Magical but extreme—full winter gear required (thermal layers, boots rated -30°C, headlamps essential). Limited daylight means daytime activities restricted. Many campgrounds closed (only winterized ones open). Roads require studded tyres/chains, careful driving. Snowmobiling, dog sledding, ice fishing available. Not recommended for first-time Norway visitors unless specifically seeking aurora.
Best for: Northern Lights chasers, winter adventure enthusiasts, photographers, those comfortable with extreme cold and darkness, unique Arctic experience.
Spring Transition (March to April)
Daylight: Rapidly increasing (March: 6am-6pm, April: 4am-9pm)
Temperatures: -5 to +5°C
Conditions: Still winter (snow), but light returning
Excellent compromise. Still dark enough for Northern Lights (especially March) but daylight increasing for activities. Ski touring season in Lyngen Alps (March-May, midnight sun skiing later). Less extreme than deep winter. Easter week (late March/April) is popular—book ahead. Snow depths peak in March. Roads still require winter tyres but conditions improving.
3 to 5 Days
Tromsø & Kvaløya Loop (300km, 4 days)
Senja Island (600km round trip, 4-5 days)
Lyngen Alps (400km, 3-4 days)
Fuel Stations
Average diesel price: 22-26 NOK/L (northern Norway typically 1-2 NOK more than southern Norway)

Speed Limits
Enforcement: Speed cameras (fixed and mobile), fines 900-10,000 NOK depending on speed. Norway is VERY strict. Police patrol E6.
Road Conditions
Summer (June-August): Excellent. Roads well-maintained, dry, all routes open.
Winter (October-April): Snow, ice, black ice, reduced visibility. E6/E10 maintained (plowed, salted) but still dangerous. Smaller roads may close. Check vegvesen.no before every drive.
Mountain passes: Closed November-May (Lofoten roads stay open but challenging).
Reindeer: Especially Finnmark (east of Tromsø) and Sami areas. Reindeer cross roads unpredictably, especially dawn/dusk. Hitting reindeer = report to police + owner compensation (reindeer are property).
Norway is expensive. Budget accordingly.
Campervan hire: 6,000-10,000 NOK (varies by season/vehicle)
Fuel: 2,000-3,500 NOK (diesel 22-26 NOK/L, 700-1,000km typical week, 13-16L/100km = 91-160L)
Ferry tolls: 400-900 NOK (if Lofoten trip, Gryllefjord-Andenes ferry ~250 NOK + others)
Road tolls: 200-400 NOK (tunnels, bridges—automatic, billed to hire)
Campgrounds: 2,100-4,200 NOK (300-600 NOK/night × 7, Norwegian campgrounds expensive)
Food: 1,500-3,500 NOK (cook most meals—restaurants 300-500 NOK/person, supermarket groceries still pricey)
Activities: 500-2,000 NOK (cable car 240 NOK, museums 100-200 NOK, Northern Lights tour 900-1,500 NOK if doing guided)
Total estimates:
Norway is one of world's most expensive countries. Northern Norway adds 10-20% to costs (fuel, food pricier). Budget realistically.
Tromsø is the Arctic gateway, sophisticated city (70,000 people, northernmost university, vibrant culture) combined with wilderness access. You're not choosing between civilization and nature, you have polar research institutes, craft breweries, and sushi restaurants, then drive 30 minutes to see Northern Lights over fjords or reindeer herds crossing mountain passes.
Most importantly, Tromsø sits at the intersection of Norway's greatest Arctic hits: Lofoten's photogenic peaks 4 hours southwest, Senja's dramatic coast 2.5 hours south, North Cape's midnight sun 7 hours north, and the Northern Lights overhead 200+ nights per year. One-way hire mean you can drive the coastal route to Bergen or start here and end in Swedish Lapland.
Over 8,000 travellers rented from Tromsø last year, with June (midnight sun) and December-January (Northern Lights) being peaks. Find your Arctic-ready campervan and start planning your northern Norway adventure.
The roads are good but challenging. E6 is main north-south artery (well-maintained but two-lane, winding through fjords/mountains). E10 to Lofoten crosses bridges and causeways. Winter conditions (October-April) require studded tyres or chains, extreme caution. Tunnels are common (subsea tunnels, mountain tunnels—some up to 6km long). Ferries required on some routes.
Best for: Combining Northern Lights with daytime activities, ski touring, avoiding polar night darkness, shoulder season pricing.
Midnight Sun Season (May to July)
Daylight: May 20-July 22 = Midnight Sun (sun never sets, 24-hour daylight)
Temperatures: 5-15°C (cool but comfortable)
Rainfall: Moderate (60-80mm/month)
Iconic Arctic summer experience. Surreal to have full daylight at midnight—enables hiking at 11pm, photography golden hour lasts hours. June is peak—warmest temps (10-15°C), longest days, everything open. Lofoten peaks remain snow-capped for dramatic contrast. Hiking season (trails accessible, no snow below 500m). Wildlife active (puffins May-August, whales year-round). Downside: no Northern Lights (never dark enough), peak tourist season (crowded in Lofoten), expensive (highest prices), midnight sun can disrupt sleep (bring sleep mask).
Best for: Hiking, midnight sun photography, Lofoten Islands, wildlife watching, comfortable temps, maximum daylight for exploring, families.
Fall (August to October)
Daylight: Decreasing rapidly (August: 6am-10pm, October: 8am-5pm)
Temperatures: 5-12°C (August), 0-5°C (October)
Conditions: Rain increasing, snow by late October
Shoulder season. September is excellent—still comfortable temps (5-10°C), autumn colors (low vegetation turns gold/red), Northern Lights return (September 15+, dark enough after months of midnight sun), fewer tourists (60% fewer than June-July), lower prices (30-40% off peak). October gets colder and darker—roads can have early snow/ice. First aurora sightings of season feel special after summer brightness.
Best for: Northern Lights with comfortable temps, autumn colors, fewer crowds, lower prices, good hiking still possible early September.
Summer Peak (June to Early August)
Most popular months: June, July (70% of annual visitors). Warmest temps, guaranteed 24-hour daylight, all attractions/campgrounds open, but most crowded and expensive.
Winter Peak: December-January (Northern Lights seekers). Extreme but magical.

Wild camping: Legal under allemannsretten but use campgrounds for dumps. Many scenic pullouts for overnight stops.
Ferry priority: Arrive early (boarding order = arrival order). Large campervans board first usually. Secure vehicle on ferry (handbrake, gear).
