Campervan Road Trips Across Florida

Florida's road trip geography works on a logic that nothing else in the US network does. The state is flat: its highest natural point, Britton Hill in the Panhandle, sits at 105 metres above sea level, making it the lowest high point of any state in the country. There are no mountain passes to navigate, no elevation changes requiring chain controls, and no Sierra Nevada-style campground reservation wars that require a calendar alert six months in advance. What Florida offers instead is something fundamentally different: 2,170 miles of coastline, the only subtropical ecosystem in the continental United States, the most extensive freshwater wetland system in North America, and a highway that ends in the ocean.

The Overseas Highway (US-1) runs 200 miles from Florida City south through 42 bridges over open water to Key West, connecting 31 islands across the Florida Straits. The Seven Mile Bridge (GPS: 24.7046° N, 81.1254° W), completed in 1982 to replace the original 1912 Florida East Coast Railway bridge, spans 10.9 miles between Knight's Key and Little Duck Key above the Strait of Florida. There is no other road in the US network where you drive on open water at sea level for this distance. That single piece of infrastructure is the reason most people put Florida on a campervan itinerary.

Florida by Sub-Area: Where to Go and What to Expect

The Florida Keys and the Overseas Highway

Everglades National Park and the Ten Thousand Islands

Central Florida: Space Coast, Springs, and the Interior

Nearest pick up centre: Miami
Distance across sub-area: Approximately 100 miles (62 miles) from Miami north to Lake Okeechobee; 60 miles west to the Everglades entrance at Shark Valley
Character: Miami sits at the northern edge of the subtropics at the junction of two distinct ecosystems: the Atlantic coastal ridge to the east, where the city sits on a limestone shelf 3-5 metres above sea level, and the Everglades to the west, where the same limestone shelf drops to 1-2 metres and water flows south in a slow, 80-km-wide sheet toward Florida Bay. The city itself is not a campervan destination in the urban accommodation sense; the depot serves as the logistical origin point for every southward and westward Florida itinerary, not as a camping destination within the city boundaries.

The immediate surroundings offer the clearest illustration of why the campervan works in South Florida. Everglades National Park (GPS: 25.2866° N, 80.8987° W) begins 60 miles southwest of the depot via the Florida Turnpike and SR-9336. Biscayne National Park (GPS: 25.4824° N, 80.3314° W), covering 700 square miles of mangrove, seagrass, and coral reef in the bay directly east of the Everglades, begins 40 miles south of downtown Miami. The Florida Keys bridge at Homestead is 60 miles from the depot via US-1. All three are reached before most travellers have finished their first morning coffee.

Best for: First-time Florida visitors using Miami as an international gateway before heading south to the Keys or west to the Everglades; travellers connecting from the Caribbean or South America via MIA; anyone for whom the Everglades is the primary destination
Best months: November through April for South Florida comfort; the summer humidity and mosquito density in the Everglades require genuine preparation (not prohibitive, but different from a winter trip)
