1. Choose your pick-up city. Any of our Australian or New Zealand locations.
2. Switch on "End in a different location." The booking system shows every drop-off point available for those dates and that vehicle. If a route isn't showing, no vehicle can make that move on those dates — shifting your dates often opens it up.
3. Review your one-way fee. It appears in your quote before you pay, alongside the daily rate and any extras. Nothing is added later.
4. Pick up, drive, drop off. Hand the keys back wherever you chose. No return leg.
One-way hires run on Indie Campers' own fleet, because we control where those vehicles need to be. Vehicles hired through our marketplace from independent hosts are usually round-trip only.
The one-way fee covers the cost of getting the vehicle back into circulation. It's calculated per route, not charged as a flat surcharge — and in Australia the distances are among the largest we deal with anywhere, so long-haul routes carry the highest fees of any region we operate in.
What pushes it up: a drop-off a long way from where the vehicle is needed, travelling against the seasonal swing of the fleet, or a peak-season corridor over the southern summer.
What brings it down: a route we already needed covered — which in this region often means a relocation deal rather than just a reduced fee — or flexible dates.
Always true: the fee is charged once per booking, not per day. On a two- or three-week Australian route, that makes it a small share of the total. And you see it in your quote before you pay.
Australia and New Zealand are separate networks — vehicles can't move between the two countries, so each one-way trip stays within one of them.
Christchurch → Auckland
1,100 kilometres · 8–10 days · Best October to April The full length of New Zealand, south to north, including the Cook Strait ferry between the islands. This is also our most frequently relocated corridor — vehicles that came south for the summer need to head back — so check the deals board before booking at full price.
Christchurch → Queenstown
480 kilometres · 4–5 days · Best November to March Short and spectacular. Lake Tekapo, Aoraki / Mount Cook and the Lindis Pass, finishing in the adventure capital of the South Island. A good first one-way trip if you've never driven a campervan.
1,500 kilometres · 8–10 days · Best December to February North to south, the whole country, ferry included. The reverse of the relocation flow for most of the year, so expect a standard one-way fee rather than a deal — but it's the definitive New Zealand road trip.
930 kilometres · 6–7 days · Best September to November The classic Australian starter route. Port Macquarie, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, finishing in Brisbane instead of turning around at the state border.
Melbourne → Adelaide
1,000 kilometres · 5–7 days · Best November to March The Great Ocean Road, the Twelve Apostles, the Grampians and the Limestone Coast. Nobody drives the Great Ocean Road twice, which is exactly why this route wants to be one-way.
1,050 kilometres via the coast · 6–8 days · Best November to March Take the inland highway and it's a day's drive. Take the Grand Pacific Drive, Jervis Bay, the Sapphire Coast and Wilsons Promontory and it's a proper trip.
1,700 kilometres · 8–10 days · Best April to October Up the Queensland coast to the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. Best in the dry season, when the tropical north is at its most comfortable.
2,800 kilometres · 14–21 days · Best April to October The entire east coast in one run. Our longest Australian one-way route, and the one where skipping the return leg saves the most time and money.
Yes. Indie Campers operates seven Australian locations and one-way trips between them are standard. Select your pick-up city, switch on "End in a different location," and the booking system shows every available drop-off point for your dates.
It's a one-way hire at a heavily reduced rate on a route where we need a vehicle moved. Australia and New Zealand have the busiest relocation board we run, because fleets here swing north and south with the seasons. The route and travel window are fixed, availability is limited, and bookings are first come, first served.
Yes. Auckland to Christchurch or Queenstown, and the reverse, are among our most common one-way routes. The trip includes the Cook Strait vehicle ferry, which needs booking and adds about half a day — and sells out in peak season.
No. Vehicles can't move between the two countries. Book a separate hire in each.
Christchurch to Auckland. Vehicles that came south for the summer season need to return north, which makes that corridor the one most often available as a relocation deal. If your itinerary can run south to north, you'll usually pay less.
Per route, based on how far the vehicle ends up from where it's needed and whether we already wanted a vehicle moved that way. It's charged once per booking rather than per day, and it appears in your quote before payment. Australian long-haul routes carry the highest fees of any region we operate in, simply because the distances are the largest.
Standard routes can often be booked reasonably close to your dates. Long-haul Australian routes and the southern summer, particularly Christmas and January in New Zealand, are worth booking well ahead — one-way availability depends on a vehicle being able to make that specific move.
Drive the east coast. Drive the length of New Zealand. Don't drive back.
