Crater Lake fills the caldera of a collapsed volcano with the deepest, bluest water in the United States (1,943 ft), circled by the 33-mile Rim Drive. Mazama Campground is the main campervan base (no hookups). Indie Campers’ Portland depot is about 4.5 hours / 250 miles north, and the lake is a striking centrepiece for a Pacific-Northwest or northern-California campervan loop.
We get the logistics. A road trip to a place this remote has a lot of moving parts, and our entire model is built to simplify them. You fly in. You pick up the keys. You’re gone. The campervan has everything: the bedding, the kitchen kit, the camp chairs. All of it.
Our Portland depot is the most logical starting point, about 250 miles or a 4.5-hour drive to the park's North Entrance. Or start from San Francisco. That depot is about 370 miles (a 6-hour drive) from the South Entrance. This makes for a perfect one-way trip: pick up in one city, drop off in the other, with Crater Lake as the dramatic centrepiece. Our unlimited mileage plans are built for exactly these kinds of long-haul scenic routes. For Crater Lake's roads and campgrounds, we recommend our Compact or Standard size campervans; they're easier to handle and fit into the pullouts along Rim Drive without issue.
Driving is the main way to see Crater Lake. The roads are great. The season is not. Always check the official NPS road status page before you go, as snow can close roads even in June or October.
Rim Drive
This is the main event: a 33-mile, two-lane road circling the entire caldera with more than 30 overlooks. Plan on at least 2-3 hours of driving. Better yet, a full day. We recommend driving it clockwise because nearly all the pullouts are on the lake side of the road, making access simple. Key stops include the Sinnott Memorial Overlook, Phantom Ship Overlook, and The Pinnacles, though most overlooks can handle a 25-foot campervan, but a few of the smaller ones will be tight.
Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway
Crater Lake is the crown jewel of this 500-mile route that runs from California's Lassen Volcanic National Park north into Oregon. If you're coming from our San Francisco depot, you can drive a major section of it. The stretch on Highway 97 to the south of the park and Highway 138 to the north offers classic volcanic landscapes, passing through Klamath Falls and the high desert before climbing into the Cascade mountains.
Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway
Known as the "Highway of Waterfalls," this is a fantastic approach if you're driving from Portland. The route follows the North Umpqua River, offering numerous trailheads and waterfalls right off the road, a much more lush, green drive that contrasts sharply with the stark volcanic scenery of the park itself. Allow a full day for this drive alone. It's a winding road, but perfectly manageable in a standard-sized campervan.
This is the most critical piece of planning. You cannot simply pull over and camp anywhere inside Crater Lake National Park, as overnight parking is strictly limited to designated campgrounds. Rangers patrol. Fines are steep.
The park's heavy snowfall dictates a very specific travel window. Crater Lake gets an average of 43 feet of snow per year, making it one of the snowiest inhabited places in America. This dramatically limits access.
Summer (July to mid-September): This is it: the prime window. The park is fully open, Rim Drive is clear of snow, and Mazama Campground is operating. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, usually in the 60s or 70s F (15-25 C), but drop sharply into the 40s F (around 5 C) at night. This is also peak season, so expect crowds and be ready to book your campsite the moment reservations open.
Fall (mid-September to October): This can be a beautiful, quiet time with fewer people. However, it's a gamble. The first major snowstorm can happen anytime, closing Rim Drive and the campground for the season with little warning. Services begin to shut down after Labor Day.
Winter & Spring (November to June): A campervan trip during this time? Not feasible. The park's north entrance and Rim Drive are closed. The south entrance is kept open to Rim Village, but heavy snow often requires chains or 4WD, and Mazama Campground is buried under dozens of feet of snow. Plan for summer.
Booking a spot for your campervan requires planning, especially for the short summer season. Here’s the breakdown.
Mazama Campground is the primary target. A standard non-electric site runs from about $31 for a tent to $42 for a campervan. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov and are absolutely essential. The booking window typically opens six months in advance, and you should know that prime dates in July and August are gone within minutes. There are no hookups of any kind. None. The on-site dump station costs $5 to use, and the campground also has coin-operated showers and laundry, a small store, and a gas station.
Want a better chance at a spot? Be flexible with your dates and check the reservation site frequently for cancellations. If you miss the window, your next best bet is a private campervan park outside the national park.
Crater Lake Campervan Park in Prospect is about 25 miles from the park's south entrance. It offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric) with rates around $50-$70 per night. Klamath Falls KOA Journey, about 50 miles away, is another reliable option with full amenities, costing slightly more. While these private parks lack the immediacy of camping inside the park boundary, they provide the convenience of full hookups and guaranteed hot showers, and they are also great places to use as a base for resupplying before heading into the park for a few days of dry camping.
Yes. Indie Campers’ Portland depot is about 4.5 hours (250 miles) north; San Francisco is roughly 6 hours south. Crater Lake works as a centrepiece between the two.
Yes — the 33-mile Rim Drive is paved and open to campervans, with many pullouts for lake views, but a few overlook spurs are length-limited. Drive it clockwise for the easiest pull-ins.
July through September. Rim Drive and Mazama Campground are typically snow-closed from October into June — Crater Lake is one of the snowiest places in the U.S. — so summer is really the only campervan season.
