A Class A Campervan is a large, motorised vehicle built on a commercial bus or lorry chassis. Think of it as a studio flat that drives, complete with a full kitchen, bathroom, multiple beds and plenty of living space.

You'll recognise a Class A by its flat, bus-like front with a massive panoramic windscreen. The driver and passenger seats usually swivel when you're parked, turning into part of the living area. Because they're built on heavy-duty chassis, Class A motorhomes offer the most interior space of any Campervan type.

These rigs are completely self-contained, meaning you don't need to hook up to campsite facilities every night. With large water tanks, powerful generators and onboard systems, you can park almost anywhere and still have running water, electricity and all the comforts of home.

The Basic policy, included in all hires, provides a 5% refund for cancellations made at least 24 hours before collection (no refunds for same-day cancellations). For an extra per-night fee, the Flexible option offers a 100% refund up to 30 days before collection, 50% up to 8 days before, or 5% up to 24 hours before (no same-day refunds). You can also pay 50% up front and the remaining 50% 30 days before collection.

What's the fuel consumption of a Class A Campervan?

Class A motorhomes typically do about 8–14 miles per gallon (mpg), depending on the size, weight, engine type and driving conditions. Diesel engines usually get slightly better mileage than petrol engines — that’s roughly 17–29 litres per 100 km.

Yes, it’s lower than a car or even a Class B campervan — but remember, you’re driving your accommodation too. You’ll save on hotel costs and can cook your own meals instead of eating out every evening.

Fuel budget tip: Plan for about €180–€360 in fuel costs per 1,000 miles (≈1,600 km) driven, depending on current fuel prices and your route.

Can I take a Class A Campervan to all campsites?

Not always. Some older national parks, state parks and private campsites have length restrictions — usually around 30, 35 or 40 feet (about 9.1, 10.7 or 12.2 metres) maximum. Before booking a campsite, check the park's website or ring ahead to confirm they can accommodate your specific Campervan length.

Pro tip: Many Class A travellers prefer staying at larger Campervan resorts, state park campsites, or wild camping on public land (for example national forests) where size restrictions are less common.

What if I've never driven a Campervan before?

No problem, plenty of first-timers rent Class A motorhomes. Here's what helps:

Take your time. Drive a bit more slowly than usual, especially when turning and changing lanes.
Practice in an empty car park. Get comfortable with the size, turning radius and reversing before you hit the road.
Use your mirrors. Class A campervans have excellent visibility, but you'll rely on the wing mirrors more than in a regular car.
Plan your route. Avoid narrow city streets and low-clearance spots (bridges, tunnels, drive-throughs).
