Our Road Trips Itineraries
Southwestern France's geography concentrates an unusual amount of variety within a 3-hour drive. The Pyrenees, the Mediterranean coast, the Atlantic, Andorra, and Spain are all accessible without spending more than half a day behind the wheel. Carcassonne is 55 minutes. The Cathar castle circuit through the Aude and Ariège covers 400km of terrain with no equivalent in Europe. The Canal du Midi from Toulouse to the Mediterranean is a road trip in itself at 240km, and you can drive the entire thing without ever touching a motorway.
The Pyrenees make the specific case for starting here rather than Barcelona or Bordeaux. The valleys close to motorised traffic above the valley floor and open everything below to camping. A campervan parked at the Gavarnie valley floor with the Cirque de Roland overhead and no mobile signal after dark is an experience that doesn't exist on any hotel circuit. The Ariège valley running south through Foix into Cathar and cave-painting country is one of the most underrated river valleys in France and one of the few where you can park beside a 14,000-year-old cave art site without a guided tour booked two months ahead.
Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) is 10km northwest of the city centre, approximately 20-25 minutes by road to the Indie Campers pick up centre. Budget carriers including Ryanair and easyJet serve Blagnac on routes from the UK, Ireland, and northern Europe. Carcassonne Airport (CCF), 90km east, receives seasonal UK routes (primarily Ryanair) and is a workable alternative for travellers arriving from Britain; a TER Occitanie regional train from Carcassonne station to Toulouse Matabiau takes approximately 45 minutes and costs €10-15.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Toulouse hire companies:
Unlimited mileage — Drive to the Basque coast, down into Andorra, and back through the Pyrenees without watching the odometer. Most competitors cap you at 200-250km per day; we don't cap at all. A Toulouse-Carcassonne-Cathar castles-Andorra loop covers roughly 600km; a Pyrenees circuit through Lourdes, Gavarnie, and the Ariège runs 450km. Neither creates a penalty on an unlimited mileage booking.
One-way hires across 100+ locations — Pick up in Toulouse, drop off in Barcelona, Bordeaux, Lyon, or Madrid. No backtracking required. The natural one-way from Toulouse runs southeast through Carcassonne and the Languedoc into Spain, with
Spring (April to June)
Temperatures: 12-24°C. The Pyrenean valleys open progressively through April and May as snowmelt clears the lower mountain roads. By June, all valley-floor routes are accessible and the high-altitude circuits (Gavarnie, Cauterets, the Ariège high passes) open from mid-June onward. The Canal du Midi plane tree tunnels are in full leaf from late April; the wildflowers across the Languedoc plateau peak in May. Campground availability across the region is good through May; June brings the first summer arrivals and Canal-side and Carcassonne sites begin filling on weekends. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for June.
Best for: Hikers targeting the Pyrenees before the July crowds; Canal du Midi cycling and slow travel; Cathar castle circuit in comfortable temperatures.
Skip if: You want access to the very high-altitude routes like the Brèche de Roland, which remains snow-covered until mid-June at the earliest.
Summer (July to August)
Temperatures: 25-35°C, peaking in late July and August. This is peak season across southwestern France. All Pyrenean routes, the Cathar circuit, the Canal du Midi, and Andorra are fully open. Campgrounds at Gavarnie, Carcassonne, and along the canal reach capacity on weekends from 14 July (Bastille Day) onward; the August fortnight (1-15 August, when France's urban population vacations simultaneously) is the most congested period of the year. Book campgrounds 2-3 months ahead for any August dates. Afternoon temperatures in the Languedoc and Toulouse basin regularly exceed 35°C; plan outdoor activity before noon or after 5pm.
Best for: Full Pyrenees access; Andorra mountain driving; the Festival de Carcassonne (July, 200,000+ visitors across five weeks of outdoor concerts inside the medieval walls).
Skip if: Budget travel or crowds are a concern. Rates and campground prices are at their highest; traffic on every route is at its worst.

Fuel Stations
Average fuel price in France: approximately €1.75-1.95/L for SP95 unleaded at supermarket stations; €1.90-2.15/L at motorway stops. Diesel (gazole) typically runs €0.05-0.10/L below SP95. Prices fluctuate with oil markets; check the French government's free real-time fuel price map at PrixCarburants.gouv.fr before any long leg.
Minimum driver age for Indie Campers vehicles is 21. A valid driver's license is required for all drivers. Visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home country license; French police and car hire agents accept this combination. EU license holders: your national license is fully valid throughout France and Spain. A credit card in the primary driver's name is required at pick-up for the security deposit.
Crit'Air Vignette
The Crit'Air sticker is mandatory for driving in any ZFE (Zone à Faibles Emissions) in France, including Toulouse Métropole. Order from certificat-air.gouv.fr for €3.67 plus shipping; allow at least a week for delivery. Modern Indie Campers vehicles post-2015 (Euro 5/6) should qualify for Crit'Air 1 or 2 and be compliant with the Toulouse ZFE. Driving in a ZFE without the correct sticker carries fines of €68-135. Confirm your vehicle's Crit'Air classification with Indie Campers at booking.
Toll Setup
French toll booths accept major credit and debit cards at all lanes; no account setup is required for card payments. For a trip covering multiple motorway corridors, calculate expected toll costs using ViaMichelin.fr before departure; enter vehicle class (campervan) and specific route for accurate figures. A Liber-t télépéage badge (approximately €30 setup plus monthly billing) is available from Sanef or ASF online if you prefer the faster, hands-free lane.
France National Passes
France does not charge entrance fees for national parks themselves; the Parc National des Pyrénées is free to enter and hike. The Monuments Nationaux Pass (€90/adult, valid 2 years at 50+ national monuments) covers the Château Comtal at Carcassonne, the Château de Foix, and dozens of other sites if your route includes multiple monument entries. The ACSI CampingCard (€[DATA NEEDED]/year) provides significant discounts at 3,300+ European campgrounds outside the peak summer window (before June 20 and after September 1), worth considering for spring or autumn trips.
Speed Limits
Enforcement is automated throughout the main highway network via radars automatiques (speed cameras). The N20 through the Ariège toward Andorra and the D921 toward Gavarnie both have automated radar coverage at multiple points. The EU driving license information exchange agreement means foreign-registered hire vehicles are not exempt from penalty notices. First offence speeding fines start at €135; driving at 50 km/h over the limit is a criminal offence.
Road Conditions
Excellent: The A61, A62, A64, and A68 motorways out of Toulouse are modern, well-maintained dual-carriageway toll roads suitable for all vehicle sizes in all seasons.
Good but demanding: The N20 through the Ariège to Andorra is a single-carriageway national road with heavy truck traffic (Andorra's duty-free import traffic generates constant HGV use through the valley). Legal for all campervan sizes; not fast.
Campervan hire: €700-1,500 (varies by season and vehicle size; peak August pricing on a large Comfort motorhome is at the top end; shoulder season compact Adventure vehicles start lower)
Fuel: €130-260 (SP95 at €1.80-1.95/L average at supermarkets; estimated 700-1,100km for a week covering Carcassonne, the Ariège, and the Pyrenees at 9-12L/100km; fill in Andorra if route includes it to save approximately €25-40 on a full tank)
Tolls: €40-90 (unavoidable on the motorway network; Toulouse to Carcassonne round trip alone is €16-20; add the A64 toward Lourdes approximately €12 one-way plus multiple smaller péage sections; budget €50-70 for a week covering 3+ motorway corridors)
Campgrounds: €70-280 (€10-40/night; free canal-side aires on the low end; €35-40/night at a premium Carcassonne or Gavarnie campground in July-August on the high end)
Food: €180-500 (groceries €25-40/day from Leclerc; mix with dining €50-80/day; Chez Emile cassoulet €22-26 per person; Canal du Midi Saturday market provisioning is exceptional value)
Activities: €50-150 (Château Comtal Carcassonne €12/adult; Grotte de Niaux €12/adult; Cité de l'Espace Toulouse €24.50/adult; Montségur castle €5/adult; all Pyrenean hiking free; Millau Viaduct road toll [DATA NEEDED])
Parking: €15-40 (Toulouse Parc-Relais €3-5/day; Carcassonne Cité parking €5-8/day; Pyrenean valley parking generally free at village car parks)
Total estimates:
Budget: €1,200 — Compact vehicle, all cooking from Leclerc provisions, free canal-side aires and municipal campgrounds (Foix, Castelnaudary), Pyrenean hiking (no entrance fees), Montségur without the museum, no Cité de l'Espace, Andorra fuel refill to minimise fuel cost.
Toulouse → Bordeaux (244km, 2h15 via A62): The wine route out of Toulouse, following the Garonne valley northwest through Agen and Marmande before the Bordeaux appellation begins at the edge of the Entre-Deux-Mers. Stop at Agen (110km from Toulouse) for the city's celebrated prunes and the Musée des Beaux-Arts if time allows.
Toulouse → Barcelona via the Languedoc (311km, 3h via A61 and AP-7 through La Jonquera): The natural one-way route into the Iberian Peninsula. Drive the A61 through Carcassonne and Narbonne, cross the Pyrenees at Le Perthus, and arrive in Barcelona via the Costa Brava coast. One of the strongest point-to-point routes in the southern European network.
Toulouse → Barcelona via Andorra (approximately 350km, 4h via N20 through the Ariège and Andorra, then south via Lleida): The longer but more rewarding route. South through the Ariège valley, Grotte de Niaux, Andorra la Vella for duty-free fuel, then a descent through Catalonia via Lleida and the Segre valley. Add a night in Andorra or in the Catalan pre-Pyrenees.
Toulouse →
Within 160km of the Toulouse depot, you can access a UNESCO World Heritage medieval fortified city, the most complete Magdalenian cave art assemblage open to visitors in France, an Andorran capital inside the Pyrenees with duty-free fuel, and a 240km canal waterway that has been in continuous use since 1681. No other city in southwestern Europe puts this concentration of specific, non-reproducible places within a 2-hour drive.
The one experience that only works from here: the Ariège corridor south of Foix. The N20 follows a river valley that narrows into the Pyrenees and terminates at Andorra; on either side are the Grotte de Niaux's 14,000-year-old horse and bison engravings, the Cathar stronghold of Montségur on its isolated pog above the plain, and valley campgrounds in prehistoric forest with no phone signal and no sound after 9pm. This sequence from a Toulouse base is irreplaceable; it doesn't exist from Bordeaux, Barcelona, or any other departure city in the network.
The morning of pick-up: walk to the Marché Victor Hugo before 9am, buy half a kilo of duck rillettes and two bottles of Minervois from the ground floor stalls, eat a croissant from one of the upstairs café counters with the market noise rising through the floor below, then collect the vehicle and drive south on the N20 toward Foix. The Pyrenees are in the windscreen within 45 minutes and the road keeps climbing from there.
24/7 road assistance — Included on every booking. Mountain roads in the Pyrenees and the narrow D-roads of Cathar country are remote in a real sense; mobile signal disappears above 1,500m and on many canyon floor roads. If something goes wrong at altitude or in the Gorges du Tarn, you have someone to call.
Basic Protection Plan included — Covered from day one. Optional upgrades available at booking.
Flexible cancellation available — Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.
Book now, pay later — Secure your vehicle today; full payment isn't due until closer to departure.
Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures: 10-22°C in September, 5-15°C in October through November. September is the single best month to hire a campervan in southwestern France. Crowds have gone, campground prices drop 20-30%, the Pyrenees remain accessible on the main valley routes through September, and the light in the Languedoc wine country is exceptional during harvest season (vendanges, mid-September to mid-October). The Canal du Midi's plane trees turn gold in October. Cathar castles in autumn mist are among the most atmospheric experiences in this region regardless of the time of year.
Best for: Cost-conscious travellers; Canal du Midi harvest circuit; photography; anyone who avoids summer crowds.
Skip if: You need Pyrenean high-altitude access. The Brèche de Roland and other exposed passes typically close after late September or early October depending on the first snowfall.
Winter (December to March)
Temperatures: 2-10°C in the Toulouse basin; -5 to 5°C in the mountain valleys. Winter camping in the Pyrenees is for prepared, experienced cold-weather travellers. Many valley campgrounds close November through March. The Pyrenean ski resorts (Cauterets, Gavarnie-Gèdre, Ax-les-Thermes in the Ariège) are accessible in winter on chains or winter tyres. Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi are genuinely pleasant in winter: fewer tourists, the medieval city is at its most atmospheric, and the Languedoc winter temperature is mild by northern European standards. Toulouse runs a Christmas market (Marché de Noël) on the Place du Capitole through December.
Best for: Carcassonne and Canal du Midi in the off-season; Pyrenean ski resort basing (vehicle heating required); low-season pricing.
Skip if: You want Pyrenean hiking. High valley roads close and mountain campgrounds shut down entirely.
The most popular months for Toulouse campervan hires are July, August, and September.
Toulouse → Foix (84km, 55 min) → south on N20 through the Ariège to Ax-les-Thermes (50km, 45 min) → Andorra la Vella (182km total from Toulouse, approximately 2h via N20/CG1; fill on duty-free Andorran fuel before returning to France) → south into Spain via N22/C-14 to Lleida → AP-7 to Barcelona (overnight, campground outside the city, 2 nights) → northwest on AP-7 to Perpignan (3h) → Carcassonne (2h30 via A9/A61; Festival de Carcassonne if July) → Canal du Midi to Castelnaudary (55km west, canal-side aire overnight) → return to Toulouse (55km). Covers Ariège cave country, Andorra, a Spanish crossing to Barcelona, the Languedoc coast, and the canal route back.
Toulouse + Carcassonne + Gorges du Tarn + Millau (700km, 7 days)
Toulouse → Albi (76km, 50 min; Toulouse-Lautrec Museum and the red-brick Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile) → overnight Albi → northeast on D999 to Millau (115km, 1h30), cross the Viaduc de Millau on A75, afternoon at the interpretive area → north to Le Rozier at the Gorges du Tarn entrance (20km) → 2 nights on the canyon floor → return to Millau → west toward Toulouse via the Montagne Noire → Carcassonne (2 nights: Cité and Cathar castle day trip to Montségur or Peyrepertuse) → return to Toulouse (91km).
14+ Days
Full Southwest France Loop (2,200km+, 14-16 days)
Toulouse → Ariège valley (Foix, Grotte de Niaux, Montségur; 2 nights) → Andorra (1 night) → west through the Hautes-Pyrénées (Gavarnie; 2 nights) → Biarritz and the Basque coast via A64 (280km, 2h30; 2 nights) → Bordeaux and the Médoc wine route (200km, 2h; 2 nights) → Dune du Pilat, Arcachon (75km south of Bordeaux; 1 night) → northeast via A89 toward Périgueux and the Dordogne (180km, 2h; 2 nights: prehistoric cave sites, medieval bastide towns) → return south to Toulouse via A20 (200km, 2h). Covers mountain, Andorra, Atlantic coast, ocean dune, wine country, and prehistoric river valley in a single circuit without repeating a road.
Toulouse to Barcelona One-Way: The Cathar Route (450km, 6-7 days)
Toulouse → Carcassonne (91km; 1 night) → Narbonne (61km east; 1 night; Roman archaeology and Gruissan beach detour) → Perpignan (64km; 1 night; Catalan capital of France) → Collioure (26km south; the most-painted fishing village in France, favoured by Matisse and Derain) → cross into Spain at La Jonquera/Le Perthus on AP-7 → Figueres (35km; Dalí Museum) → Girona (50km; medieval Jewish quarter and intact Roman walls) → Barcelona (100km; drop-off). Confirm one-way fees and availability at booking.
Most travellers find 7-9 days ideal for combining the Pyrenees with Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi, with enough time in Toulouse before departure. Rushing the Pyrenees to a single day defeats the purpose; the valley atmosphere requires at least one overnight.
Regional fuel notes:
Service Areas (Aires de Service)
France has a dense network of aires de service pour camping-cars: dedicated motorhome service areas with fresh water, grey and black water dump, and often electricity. Most are documented in the Park4Night and Campingcar Park apps.
Aire de Camping-Car Carcassonne, Place des Carmes: In the lower town, walkable to the Cité walls. GPS: [DATA NEEDED; verify via Campingcar Park before travel]. Fresh water and dump available.
Aire de Camping-Car Castelnaudary: Canal-side, GPS: [DATA NEEDED]. Dump and fresh water; a practical Canal du Midi overnight or service stop.
Most large French supermarkets (Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarché) have dedicated motorhome service facilities in their car parks. Check Campingcar Park or the ParcVehicules app for current locations.
Essential Apps for Your Toulouse Campervan Trip
PrixCarburants.gouv.fr (app version) — French government real-time fuel price database updated live from petrol stations. Shows cheapest stations within any radius. Cache it before leaving home.
Park4Night — The most complete database of campervan overnight spots in France: aires, campgrounds, farm stops, and user-verified off-grid locations. Covers the Pyrenees valleys, Canal du Midi, and Cathar country comprehensively. Non-negotiable for this region.
Campingcar Park — Partner network of maintained aires and campgrounds across France. Works alongside Park4Night; better data for urban and canal-route aires. Subscription approximately €[DATA NEEDED]/year.
IGN Rando — The official French topographic map app. Download 1:25,000 tiles for the Pyrenees before entering the mountain valleys. Cell signal disappears completely above Luz-Saint-Sauveur on most networks; offline tiles or paper 1:150,000 Michelin regional maps are mandatory for any Pyrenean hike.
ViaMichelin — Accurate French toll cost calculation by route and vehicle class. Use before committing to any motorway itinerary; the Toulouse-Barcelona run involves multiple péage sections with cumulative cost that can reach €40-60 one-way.
Météo-France — The national weather service app with a dedicated mountain forecast (prévision montagne). The Pyrenees generate localised storm systems quickly; afternoon thunderstorms are a daily risk in July and August. Check the hourly mountain forecast before any day involving exposed high-altitude walking.
Waze — Best real-time routing for Toulouse city traffic. Set vehicle height and length in preferences to avoid low-clearance streets in the city centre.
Campground Reservations
For Carcassonne during the Festival de Carcassonne in July, book 2-3 months ahead. For Pyrenean campgrounds (Gavarnie, Cauterets valley) in July 10 through August 20, book 6-8 weeks ahead. Most French campgrounds book through their own websites, through Camping.info, or through ACSI; municipal campgrounds often accept walk-ins outside peak season.
Remote: Mountain valley roads above Luz-Saint-Sauveur (D921 to Gavarnie) and the lateral roads off the Ariège valley above Tarascon are single-track with passing places. Use the horn before blind corners; road surface is generally well maintained but check for rockfall warnings after heavy rain or spring snowmelt.
Seasonal closures: Several Ariège mountain passes (Port de Lers, Col de Pailhères) close November through April depending on snowfall. Check Bison Futé (bison-fute.gouv.fr) or the DIRA-SO roads authority site for current closure status before entering the mountains.
Driving Culture
Priority to the right (priorité à droite): In French towns and on uncontrolled intersections without give-way signs, vehicles entering from the right have priority, even if your road appears to be the main road. This catches most non-French drivers at least once. Learn this rule before driving in French villages; it applies literally.
Roundabouts: Traffic already in the roundabout has priority over entering traffic. This was standardised in 1983; it is the law and universally applied on modern roundabouts.
Lane discipline: Left lane on autoroutes is genuinely reserved for overtaking. French motorway drivers are faster and more disciplined about this than US drivers; stay right except to pass.
Horn use: Minimal and culturally discouraged in French cities. A short horn blast before a blind mountain corner is standard practice and expected; using a horn in the Toulouse city centre outside a genuine emergency is illegal.
Alcohol limit: 0.05% BAC (stricter than the UK's 0.08%). For drivers with less than 2 years of license: 0.02% BAC. First offence DUI: €750 minimum fine plus mandatory license suspension; immediate roadside confiscation above 0.08% BAC. Gendarmerie roadside breathalyser checkpoints are common on Pyrenean approach roads on summer weekends and after the Festival de Carcassonne.
Campervan-Specific
Height: Toulouse city centre has parking garage entrances below 2m on surface streets. Navigation apps with a campervan height profile active (Waze, TomTom Camper) route around these. Motorways and national roads have clearances well above 4m.
Length: The narrow D-roads in the Ariège and Aude are the binding constraint, not the motorways. A 6m campervan navigates most of them without difficulty; an 8m+ motorhome should stay on the D117, N20, and main valley roads and approach Cathar castles on foot from a parking area.
Propane/LPG: French campgrounds and supermarket service areas (Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarché) carry Campingaz refill and cylinder exchange, which is the standard system across France and compatible with most European campervans. No tunnel restrictions apply on the main Toulouse motorway network; check Spanish and Andorran tunnel rules before crossing any border.
Parking: Campervan street parking in central Toulouse is limited. Camping de Rupé on the Île du Ramier is the practical urban overnight option. For day visits to the city centre, use the peripheral Parc-Relais (park-and-ride) with tramway connections; several Parc-Relais sites are large enough for campervans at €3-5/day.
Wildlife: Wild boar (sangliers) are abundant in the Ariège, the Montagne Noire, and the Pyrenean foothills. Most active at dawn and dusk; collisions on D-roads around Foix, in the Montagne Noire east of Carcassonne, and on the approaches to the Gorges du Tarn are frequent enough to be a real risk. Reduce speed on forested D-roads at dusk. Griffon vultures circle above the Gorges du Tarn and the Cirque de Gavarnie; Pyrenean chamois and izard appear on slopes above the valley floor from June through October.
Mid-range: €2,100 — Mid-size vehicle, mix of cooking and two or three restaurant meals (cassoulet at Chez Emile, a Marché Victor Hugo lunch, one dinner in the Carcassonne lower town), Château Comtal entry, Grotte de Niaux guided tour, standard campgrounds in Carcassonne, Foix, and the Gavarnie valley.
Premium: €3,500 — Large motorhome, frequent dining across all three base towns, Cité de l'Espace, full Cathar castle circuit, one night at a Pyrenean thermal spa (Ax-les-Thermes), premium full-hookup campgrounds, Andorra shopping and dining stop, Dry Tortugas equivalent here being a full Canal du Midi circuit to the Mediterranean.
Southwestern France sits below the national average for campervan travel costs. Campgrounds in the Languedoc and Ariège are cheaper than those on the Côte d'Azur or in Brittany; provisioning from Leclerc hypermarkets consistently undercuts prices from comparable UK or German supermarkets. The main cost variable is tolls: the autoroute network in southwestern France is excellent but expensive for larger vehicles, and a week using the motorway on every leg can accumulate €70-90 in péage charges alone. Routing selectively on national roads, where the scenery through the Ariège and Languedoc is often superior to the motorway anyway, reduces this significantly.
Toulouse → Lyon (535km, 4h45 via A61/A9/A7 through Montpellier): North along the A61 through Carcassonne to Narbonne, east on the A9 through Montpellier and Nîmes, then north on the A7 Autoroute du Soleil along the Rhône. Covers the full width of the Languedoc and the Rhône wine corridor in a single drive.
Toulouse → Porto (1,020km, approximately 9h via A62 to Bordeaux, A63 south along the Atlantic coast, then into Portugal via the A1): The full Atlantic southwestern run. Bordeaux, the Landes coast, the Basque country at the Spanish border, across northern Spain, and into Portugal. A strong 3-4 day itinerary with Biarritz, San Sebastián, and Óbidos as natural stops.
Toulouse → Paris (680km, 5h30-6h via A20 north through Cahors, Limoges, and the Creuse): The direct northern route up the A20, one of the least congested main routes to Paris. Cahors (110km north of Toulouse) and its 14th-century Pont Valentré over the Lot river (GPS: 44.4477° N, 1.4276° E) is a natural lunch stop.
Toulouse → Lisbon (approximately 1,500km, allow 3-4 days via A62/A63 along the Atlantic coast through Bordeaux, across northern Spain, and south through Porto): The western extremity of the Indie Campers European network. Biarritz, San Sebastián, the Portuguese north coast, Óbidos, and Sintra are all on or near the route.
One-way fees vary by route and season. Confirm availability and pricing at the time of booking.
