Olympic packs three worlds into one park: glacier-capped peaks at Hurricane Ridge, the moss-draped Hoh Rain Forest, and a wild Pacific coastline. Kalaloch, Sol Duc and Hoh campgrounds take campervans (no hookups). Indie Campers’ Seattle depot is about 2.5 hours away including a short ferry, and US-101 loops the entire peninsula.
Starting your trip from our Seattle depot puts you in the perfect position to explore the peninsula. The drive to the park's main northern entrance at Port Angeles is about 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a ride on the Bainbridge Island Ferry that cuts out a ton of traffic.
We focus on modern, efficient campervans. They're perfect for park travel. While Olympic’s roads are generally good, the campgrounds have specific size limits. A massive Class A campervan will struggle to find a spot in the park's rustic campgrounds. Our vans fit.
For a couple or a small family, our Standard or Family models are the ideal choice. They have the maneuverability you need for mountain roads and the comfort you want after a day exploring the rainforest.
US Highway 101 circles the entire Olympic Peninsula. It's a natural loop for a campervan trip. You can drive it clockwise or counter-clockwise from Seattle. In our experience, going counter-clockwise works well. You hit the mountains first and save the wild Pacific coast for last.
The Northern Crescent: Port Angeles to Lake Crescent and Sol Duc
Key stops: Olympic National Park Visitor Center (Port Angeles), Lake Crescent Lodge, Marymere Falls, Sol Duc Falls and Hot Springs. Approx drive time: 1.5 hours without stops from Port Angeles to Sol Duc. Best time to go: Weekday mornings. This helps you get parking at the Storm King and Marymere Falls trailheads. Campervan notes: The road around Lake Crescent is winding but fully paved and fine for any campervan. The parking lot at Marymere Falls fills up fast, so arriving before 10 a.m. is your best bet. The Sol Duc Road is narrower but still manageable.
Hurricane Ridge Road
Key stops: Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center, Hurricane Hill Trail, various viewpoints along the road. Approx drive time: 45 minutes one-way from Port Angeles to the summit. Best time to go: A clear day. Check the park's webcam before you go. The road can close due to weather, even in summer. Campervan notes: This is a 17-mile climb with some sharp turns. It's entirely doable in our campervans. Just use a lower gear on the way up and down. Campervans over 25 feet might find the switchbacks a little tight. Parking at the top is extensive but can be full by midday on a sunny weekend.
The Pacific Coast: Ruby Beach to Kalaloch
Key stops: Ruby Beach, Beach 4, Kalaloch Lodge, The Big Cedar Tree. Approx drive time: 30 minutes of driving, but budget half a day for beachcombing and tide pooling. Best time to go: Low tide. You must check a tide chart before you go to explore the sea stacks and tide pools at Ruby Beach. Campervan notes: This stretch of US-101 is straight and easy. Parking at Ruby Beach is the main challenge. The lot is small. Try going early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The Kalaloch Campground is right here, making it an ideal basecamp.
Camping inside the park is the best way to experience Olympic. Period. The campgrounds are rustic. Think no hookups and often no cell service. But the locations are simply unbeatable. You must book most sites on Recreation.gov, especially for summer, because reservations open six months in advance and the most popular spots are gone in minutes.
The park is open year-round. But access changes dramatically with the seasons. A trip in July is a completely different world from one in November.
Summer (June to September): This is peak season. The weather is at its warmest and driest. All park roads, including Hurricane Ridge, are typically open. Wildflowers carpet the mountain meadows. The downside? Crowds. Campgrounds are full, so you need to book months in advance. Trailhead parking lots fill up early. Temperatures range from 65-75°F (18-24°C) on the coast and can be warmer inland.
Fall (October to November): The crowds disappear. The forests take on autumn colors, especially the maples in the river valleys. The weather becomes wetter and more unpredictable. Hurricane Ridge Road may have temporary closures due to early snow. It’s a great time for moody photography. Expect daytime temperatures of 45-60°F (7-15°C) and pack serious rain gear.
Winter (December to March): This is the quietest season. The main draw is storm watching on the coast. The rainforests are at their lushest. Most high-elevation areas are inaccessible. Hurricane Ridge Road is typically open only on weekends, weather permitting, and requires vehicles to carry tyre chains. Many park campgrounds close, but Kalaloch remains open.
Spring (April to May): A season of transition. Waterfalls are at their most powerful from snowmelt. The rainforests are intensely green. The weather is still wet, but sunny days become more frequent. Lower elevation trails are snow-free, but Hurricane Ridge is often still buried in snow. It's a good time to visit if you want to avoid summer crowds, but be prepared for anything.
Navigating the camping system is key to a successful campervan trip in Olympic. Here’s the breakdown.
National Park Service (NPS) Campgrounds
These are the most scenic and sought-after spots. They are dry camping only (no water, electric, or sewer hookups). You book them on Recreation.gov. The booking window opens six months in advance to the day. For a weekend in August, you need to be online at 7 a.m. PST exactly six months prior.
Private RV Parks & Concessioner Campgrounds
Yes. Indie Campers’ Seattle depot is about 2–3 hours from the park (a Puget Sound ferry shortens the drive). US-101 makes a full loop around the peninsula, ideal for a one-way-style campervan circuit.
Yes, but the 17-mile Hurricane Ridge Road is steep with switchbacks — use low gear and check seasonal closures (it can be day-use or gated in winter). The Hoh and coastal roads are gentler and campervan-friendly.
The Rain Forests: Hoh and Quinault
Key stops: Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center, Hall of Mosses Trail, Spruce Nature Trail, Lake Quinault Lodge. Approx drive time: 45 minutes one-way on Upper Hoh Road; the drive between Hoh and Quinault is about 1 hour. Best time to go: Early morning for that ethereal light filtering through the canopy, or on a drizzly day when the colors of the moss and ferns are at their most vibrant. Campervan notes: Upper Hoh Road is paved and well-maintained. The visitor centre parking lot is large but gets congested. The Quinault Valley has a scenic loop drive; the south shore road is paved, while the north shore is gravel and can be rough. Stick to the south shore in a larger campervan.
For those who need hookups or can't find a spot in the park, the towns of Port Angeles, Sequim, and Forks have numerous private campervan parks with full amenities.
Waste Disposal / Dump Stations
Since most in-park campgrounds don't have hookups, you'll need a plan for dumping your grey and black water tanks. Dump stations are available in the park during the summer at Kalaloch, Sol Duc, and Fairholme for a small fee (around $10). Outside the park, many private campervan parks will let you use their dump station for a fee, and some gas stations or visitor centres offer the service.
Kalaloch, Sol Duc, Hoh, Fairholme and others take campervans without hookups, with length limits (often around 21–35 ft) that vary by campground. For hookups, use private parks in Port Angeles or Forks.
June through September for the driest weather and open mountain roads. The rain forest lives up to its name the rest of the year, and Hurricane Ridge Road has winter restrictions.
