Mount Rainier is a 14,411-ft glaciated volcano ringed by wildflower meadows, most famously at Paradise. Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh campgrounds take campervans (no hookups). Indie Campers’ Seattle depot is about two hours / 85 miles away, making Rainier an easy first stop on a Pacific-Northwest campervan trip.
The drive from Sea-Tac to our Seattle depot is short. Really short. From there, it's just 85 miles of straightforward highway to the park's main Nisqually entrance. We get you on the road fast, geared for the kind of nimble exploration a park with winding mountain roads demands.
Most of Rainier’s roads, like Stevens Canyon Road, are manageable but feature tight curves and steep grades. A massive Class A rig can feel like a liability here. A boat on a mountain road. You need something that fits in the historic campground loops and doesn't make you sweat on the switchbacks. Our campervans are built for this. They handle like a large van, not a bus, making the drive up to Sunrise an adventure, not a white-knuckle ordeal.
We recommend a vehicle under 30 feet for Mount Rainier. Seriously. This size gives you access to nearly every campsite at Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh, and it makes parking at notoriously busy spots like Paradise or Sunrise infinitely simpler. Plus, with unlimited kilometres, you can explore the surrounding Gifford Pinchot National Forest without watching the odometer.
These drives define the Rainier experience. Each one offers a different face of the mountain, from glaciers and wildflower meadows to ancient, old-growth forests. Plan to go slow. The views demand it.
Paradise Valley Road
This is the park’s main artery. It runs from the Nisqually Entrance to the Paradise Visitor Center at 5,400 feet and is the most popular and accessible drive in the park. Key stops include the Longmire Museum, Christine Falls, and Narada Falls before the final, steep climb to Paradise. In July and August, the meadows here are a carpet of wildflowers. The campervan parking lot at Paradise fills completely by 10 a.m. on summer weekends. No joke. Get there by 8 a.m. Or visit on a weekday.
Sunrise Road
This 14-mile road climbs from the White River Entrance to the Sunrise Visitor Center, the highest point you can drive to in the park at 6,400 feet. The views are immense. Think Emmons Glacier and the entire Cascade Range. The road is steep and winding, but it's paved and entirely doable in any of our campervans. It's typically open only from early July to late September, and the reward for the slow, careful drive is a perspective of the mountain that feels wilder and larger than Paradise.
Stevens Canyon Road
Connecting the Paradise area with the southeastern corner of the park at Ohanapecosh, this road is a journey in itself, hugging the mountainside with clear views at Reflection Lakes and the deep, narrow Box Canyon. It's a winding, beautiful drive. Check for road status, as it can close for repairs. Not recommended for very large rigs, but perfect for a nimble campervan.
Camping inside the park is the best way to experience Rainier. Period. All in-park campgrounds are dry camping (no hookups), but they offer an immersive experience that no hotel can possibly match. Reservations via Recreation.gov are absolutely essential, and you should make them months in advance.
Timing is everything at Rainier. The park’s character changes dramatically with the seasons, and road access above the 5,000-foot level is the single deciding factor for any campervan trip.
Summer (July to September): This is high season. All park roads, including the key routes to Paradise (5,400 ft) and Sunrise (6,400 ft), are typically snow-free. Wildflowers are at their peak. The weather is most stable. The trade-off? Crowds. We're talking Fourth of July at Disneyland crowds. Campgrounds are booked solid, so you absolutely must plan and reserve months ahead.
Fall (October to early November): The crowds thin out and the lower-elevation forests show good fall color. This is a gamble, however. Snow can close the higher elevation roads like Sunrise and Stevens Canyon at any time, making it a quiet, beautiful season only if you're prepared for very limited access.
Winter (Mid-November to March): Mount Rainier is not a primary winter campervan destination. Far from it. The only road kept open is the stretch from the Nisqually Entrance to Longmire, and even the road to Paradise is only open on a limited basis where tyre chains are mandatory. Most of the park is simply inaccessible.
Spring (April to June): The great thaw begins. Roads start to open at lower elevations, but the high country remains buried under feet of deep snow. It’s a time of transition, with high avalanche danger and wildly unpredictable conditions, which is not ideal for a first-time campervan visit.
Getting a campsite inside Mount Rainier requires planning. Here’s what you need to know about the cost and logistics for the main campervan-friendly campgrounds.
Booking and Costs
All reservable campsites in the park are managed through Recreation.gov.
Most people try to visit both Paradise and Sunrise in one day. It's a mistake. Pick one, go deep, and save the other for the next trip.
Waste Disposal and Amenities
Since there are no hookups in the park, managing your resources is key.
Yes. Indie Campers’ Seattle depot is about 2 hours (85 miles) from the Nisqually entrance — the closest big-city start — and Rainier pairs well with Olympic and Mount St. Helens.
Stevens Canyon Road and the road to Sunrise are paved but steep and winding with tight curves — doable for most campervans slowly, but very large rigs should stick to the Nisqually–Paradise corridor. There are no trailer restrictions, just length advisories.
This route forms the eastern boundary of the park. It offers some of the best views of Rainier from outside its gates. The drive up to Chinook Pass and Tipsoo Lake is a highlight, with dense wildflower displays and a classic view of the mountain reflected in the lake, making it a great option for connecting Rainier to destinations in Eastern Washington.
Cougar Rock (near Paradise) and Ohanapecosh take campervans without hookups, with length limits around 27–35 ft and a dump station at each in season. Reserve early for summer weekends.
July through September, when the Paradise meadows bloom and the high roads (Paradise, Sunrise, Stevens Canyon) are clear of snow. Most high-elevation access is closed by snow the rest of the year.
