Experience the freedom of the open road and create unforgettable memories.
Our Road Trips Itineraries
Poland is a country built for the freedom of the road. Hiring a campervan is more than a travel style; it’s a logistical advantage. The core benefit is simple: you escape the rigid itinerary of hotel bookings. If you find a lakeside campsite in Masuria or a perfect hiking trail in the Tatras, you can stay another night. That flexibility is priceless.
Then there's the cost. Poland is already one of Europe's best-value destinations, and a campervan amplifies those savings. According to our internal data, a 7-day campervan trip in Poland for a couple or small family can be up to 30% cheaper than a comparable trip in Western European destinations like Germany or France. You combine your transport and accommodation, and you have a kitchen to prepare your own meals, saving a fortune on restaurant bills.
Finally, a campervan gives you access. Poland has 23 national parks and hundreds of nature reserves. These are often the places least served by public transport and with limited hotel options. With a campervan, you can sleep at a designated campsite right on the edge of the Białowieża Forest or wake up to a view of the Baltic dunes at Słowiński National Park. It puts the country's greatest asset, its natural beauty, right outside your door.
When you hire with us in Poland, you get a platform for a friction-free road trip. Our entire operation is designed around one goal: making your adventure as smooth as possible, from the moment you book to the day you drop off the keys.
It starts with our depot. We have a single, dedicated depot in Warsaw, strategically located to give you easy access to the country's main arterial roads. From here, you can be on the S7 heading south to Kraków or the A2 heading west towards Germany within minutes, saving you from navigating an unfamiliar city.
Every hire comes with unlimited kilometres. We include this so you can explore freely. If you decide to chase the sunset all the way to the Hel Peninsula, go for it. There are no surprise distance charges waiting for you at the end. This is crucial in a country the size of Poland, where the best sights are often hundreds of kilometres apart.
And we have your back. Road trips can have hiccups. That’s why we provide 24/7 roadside assistance and customer support. It's a service our customers value; in internal surveys, 92% of Indie Campers customers in Poland report being satisfied with our assistance service. It’s the peace of mind that lets you focus on the road ahead. Add in comprehensive protection plans and flexible booking options, and you have a hire experience built by people who actually do this stuff.
These aren't just drives; they are curated routes that stitch together the best of Poland. We've seen thousands of travellers through our Warsaw depot, and these are the itineraries that consistently deliver.
Start: Warsaw → End: Warsaw (850 km, 7-10 days recommended). This is our most-booked route in Poland for a reason. It's a perfect blend of Poland's cultural heart and its alpine soul. You head south from Warsaw on the fast S7 expressway to Kraków for a few days of exploring the historic Old Town, Wawel Castle, and the nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine. From there, it's a short drive into the foothills of the Tatra Mountains and the lively hub of Zakopane. You can spend several days hiking and sampling the smoked oscypek cheese before looping back to Warsaw. Highlights: The Royal Route in Kraków, hiking to Morskie Oko lake, the underground chapels of the Wieliczka Salt Mine (entry from 109 PLN per adult).
Start: Warsaw → End: Warsaw (950 km, 7-9 days recommended). This route trades mountains for sea spray and medieval history. From Warsaw, you drive north to Malbork Castle, the largest castle in the world by land area and a formidable example of Teutonic brick Gothic architecture. Next is the Tricity: Gdańsk, Sopot, and Gdynia. After soaking in the maritime atmosphere, you drive out onto the surreal Hel Peninsula and then west along the coast to Słowiński National Park, where you can hike across giant, Sahara-like shifting sand dunes.
Your experience in Poland will be dramatically different depending on when you go. The country has four very distinct seasons, and each offers a different kind of road trip.
Summer (June - August) This is peak season. The weather is warm and sunny, with average temperatures between 18-24 °C. Everything is open, the days are long, and the country is alive with festivals. This is the best time for the Baltic Coast and the Masurian Lakes. The downside? Crowds and higher prices. Campsites, especially in popular coastal and lake districts, can fill up quickly. Our data shows that this period accounts for 65% of all our bookings in Poland, so you need to book your vehicle and key campsites well in advance.
Autumn (September - October) For many, this is the perfect time for a Polish road trip. The summer crowds have vanished, but the weather often remains pleasant, especially in September. This is the season of the Złota Polska Jesień (Golden Polish Autumn), when the forests erupt in spectacular colours. It's the ideal time to visit the eastern wilderness of Białowieża or the Bieszczady Mountains in the far southeast. Campsite availability is excellent. Temperatures are cooler, averaging 8-14 °C, so pack layers.
Spring (April - May) Spring is the budget-friendly shoulder season. The country shakes off winter, and the landscape comes back to life. It’s a great time to visit cities like Kraków and Warsaw before the summer heat and crowds arrive. Temperatures are variable, ranging from 7-15 °C, and you can expect some rain, but you’ll be rewarded with lower hire prices and wide-open campsites. Many seasonal attractions and campsites reopen in late April or early May.
Poland's size and richness reward a longer trip; a few days will feel rushed. The right trip length depends entirely on your ambitions. Here’s a realistic breakdown of what you can achieve in different timeframes.
5-7 Days: The Focused Strike* With a week, you can do one region exceptionally well. The most popular choice for first-time campervan hirers, based on our booking data, is the 7-day Southern Loop. This gives you enough time to drive from Warsaw, spend 2-3 days exploring Kraków and its surroundings (Auschwitz, Wieliczka), and then 2-3 days hiking in the Tatra Mountains near Zakopane before driving back. It's a packed but incredibly rewarding trip.
Sample 7-Day Southern Loop: Day 1: Pick up from Warsaw depot, drive to Camping Smok in Kraków (approx. 4 hours). Day 2: Explore Kraków's Old Town and Wawel Castle. Day 3: Day trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. Day 4: Drive to Zakopane (approx. 2.5 hours), set up at Camping Harenda.
Getting to your campervan should be the easiest part of your trip. Poland is well-served by international airports, but your choice of arrival city has a big impact on your itinerary logistics.
Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) This is the primary gateway and the most logical choice for anyone hiring with us. As Poland's largest airport, it has the most international connections. Crucially, it's the closest airport to our Warsaw depot. The transfer is straightforward, with an average time of just 30 minutes by taxi or ride-share. Flying into WAW means you can pick up your vehicle and be on the road to anywhere in Poland with minimal fuss.
Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK) Kraków is the second-busiest airport and a popular entry point for visitors focused on southern Poland. Remember that our only Polish depot is in Warsaw. You would need to take a train or bus from Kraków to Warsaw (about 2.5-3 hours) to pick up your vehicle, and then drive back south. This adds a significant amount of travel time to your first day.
Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) If your trip is centred on the Baltic Coast, flying into Gdańsk can be tempting. Like Kraków, it has good connections within Europe, but the same logistical challenge applies: you would need to travel from Gdańsk to our depot in Warsaw (about 3 hours by train) to start your hire. Flying directly into Warsaw is almost always the more efficient option.

Hiring a campervan in Poland is straightforward, but a few key details will save headaches later.
First, age and licence requirements. The minimum age to hire a campervan is typically 21. A young-driver surcharge often applies for those under 25, which covers the higher insurance risk. You'll need a valid driver's licence that you've held for at least one full year.
For the vast majority of our fleet, your standard car licence (Category B in European terms) is all you need, as it covers vehicles up to a gross weight of 3,500 kg. If you hold a licence from a non-EU country (like the US, Canada, or Australia), we highly recommend you also obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you leave home. It's an official translation of your licence that can simplify any police check.
Finally, the deposit. At pickup, a refundable security deposit will be authorised on your credit card. This is a hold, not a direct charge. It covers any potential damages, fines, or tolls incurred during your hire. The amount varies depending on the vehicle and the protection plan you choose. The hold is released after the vehicle is returned and inspected. Make sure you have sufficient credit available on your card for this.
Driving in Poland is safe and modern, but it has its own set of rules. Here’s what you need to know to navigate the country’s roads with confidence.
Speed Limits: Poland uses the metric system, so speeds are in kilometres per hour (km/h). Pay close attention to signs, but the general limits for a campervan under 3.5t are: Motorways (A roads, blue signs): 140 km/h (approx. 140 km/h) Expressways (S roads, blue signs): 120 km/h (approx. 121 km/h) Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h (approx. 90.1 km/h) Built-up areas (indicated by a white sign with a town silhouette): 50 km/h (approx. 49.9 km/h)
Tolls: Some major motorways, like sections of the A1, A2, and A4, are tolled. Poland uses a free-flow electronic system called e-TOLL. You need to register your vehicle online or via an app before using these roads. It's a GPS-based system with no toll booths. We can provide information on how to manage this for your hire vehicle.
Wild Camping:
One of Poland's biggest draws is its affordability. Your money simply goes further here than in much of Western Europe. A campervan trip allows you to capitalise on this, but it’s still important to budget realistically.
Here's a sample breakdown for a 7-day trip for two people, keeping in mind that prices fluctuate with season and travel style.
Many travellers dream of a grand, one-way journey across Europe. In Poland, the situation is specific. Because we operate a single, centralised depot in Warsaw, all hire must start and end at that location. This means itineraries should be planned as loops or out-and-back trips. Given the country's relatively compact size and excellent road network, this is very practical. Routes like the Southern Loop or the Baltic Coast tour are designed as natural round trips from the capital.
However, international one-way hire may be an option. Depending on the season and network availability, it is sometimes possible to book a one-way trip from Warsaw to another European city where Indie Campers has a depot, such as Berlin or Prague. These options are subject to availability and typically incur a one-way fee. If you're planning a multi-country epic, check the booking engine for potential one-way routes starting from our Warsaw depot.
Start: Warsaw → End: Warsaw (700 km, 5-7 days recommended). This is the trip for slowing down. It's a relaxed loop through the heart of the Masurian Lake District. You'll wind your way between Poland's largest lakes, Śniardwy and Mamry, setting up camp at waterfront sites. The days are for kayaking, swimming, or simply reading by the water. You can visit the Wolf's Lair, Hitler's former wartime headquarters, a chillingly atmospheric ruin near Kętrzyn. The route is less about fixed landmarks and more about finding your own perfect spot on the shore of one of the 2,000 lakes. Highlights: Hiring a kayak on the Krutynia River, visiting the Boyen Fortress in Giżycko, finding a quiet campsite with its own private pier.
Start: Warsaw → End: Warsaw (650 km, 5-7 days recommended). For travellers wanting to get further afield, this route heads east into the Podlasie region. The main destination is the Białowieża Forest National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that protects Europe's last significant tract of primeval lowland forest. Taking a guided tour to spot European bison is a must. The route can also include the Biebrza National Park, a vast network of marshes that is one of Europe's most important bird sanctuaries, and the unique cultural landscape of the "Land of Open Shutters" with its decorated wooden houses. Highlights: A dawn bison-spotting tour in Białowieża, birdwatching in the Biebrza Marshes, visiting the Holy Mountain of Grabarka, a major Orthodox pilgrimage site.
10-12 Days: The Combo Trip* With 10 days to two weeks, you can comfortably combine two major regions. You could do the Southern Loop and then add a circuit of the Masurian Lakes. Or, you could pair the Baltic Coast with a few days in Warsaw and a side trip to the Białowieża Forest. This timeframe allows for a more relaxed pace, with more downtime and opportunities for spontaneous detours.
14+ Days: The Grand Tour* Two weeks or more gives you the freedom to attempt a true grand tour of Poland. You could link the Baltic Coast in the north with the Tatra Mountains in the south, stopping at key cities like Toruń, Poznań, and Wrocław along the way. This is how you really get a feel for the country's diversity. You have time to get off the main tourist trail and truly settle into the rhythm of life on the road.
Alcohol: Poland has a near-zero tolerance policy for drinking and driving. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.02%, which is less than one small beer. The penalties are severe. The only safe rule is: if you’re driving, don’t drink any alcohol.
Other Rules: Headlights must be on at all times, day and night. By law, you must carry a warning triangle, a fire extinguisher, and a first-aid kit in the vehicle (our hire are equipped with these). Winter tyres are mandatory when conditions are snowy or icy.
Total Estimated 7-Day Cost (2 people): Approximately 4,000 - 8,000 PLN (€920 - €1,840), excluding flights.
This offers incredible value compared to a trip using hotels and hire cars, where you'd be paying for accommodation and restaurant meals on top of your transport.
