Our Road Trips Itineraries
Got three days or three weeks? Here’s where to head from each depot.
Sydney: For a weekend, head up to the Blue Mountains or down the NSW South Coast. With more time, drive north to Byron Bay, take the coast road on our Sydney to Melbourne road trip, or go all the way up the East Coast to Cairns.
Melbourne: The Great Ocean Road, the Grampians and Wilsons Prom are all easy weekend trips. For something longer, drive to Sydney via the coast or west to Adelaide.
Brisbane: Spend a weekend on the Sunshine Coast, in Noosa or in the Gold Coast hinterland. With a week or more, follow our Brisbane to Cairns road trip or make the run to K’gari (Fraser Island).
Cairns: The Daintree, Cape Tribulation and the Atherton Tablelands are right on your doorstep. For a longer trip, head south down the East Coast to Brisbane.
Perth: Weekend options include the Pinnacles and Turquoise Coast or Margaret River. Go further up the Coral Coast to Ningaloo Reef, or south on our Perth to Esperance road trip.
Tasmania (Hobart): Freycinet and the Bay of Fires make a perfect long weekend. With more time, take our Tasmania loop road trip or the Cradle Mountain circuit.
Darwin: Litchfield National Park is an easy weekend loop. For longer, do the Top End circuit through Kakadu and Katherine, or head south down the Stuart Highway.
Heading across the ditch? We also have campervan hire in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown.
School holidays and long weekends. Vans go fast around Easter, the June–July break, the September–October break and from Christmas to late January. Long weekends like the King’s Birthday and Labour Day fill up too. Dates differ by state, so check your state’s calendar and book a few months ahead. Keep an eye on our campervan hire deals for off-peak savings.
Summer (December to February) is best for Tasmania at peak hiking season, the Great Ocean Road, the NSW coast and Melbourne. Avoid the NT and far north Queensland, where the wet season brings extreme heat and flooded roads.
Autumn (March to May) suits the East Coast before the humidity builds, Western Australia and the Outback as it cools. Whale sharks visit Ningaloo from March to July. Easter and the April school holidays push up demand, so book early.
Winter (June to August) is the best window for the NT (Kakadu, Uluru), WA’s north, the Whitsundays and the Tropical North. Melbourne, Tassie and the Great Ocean Road stay mild but wet, so pack layers.
Spring (September to November) is the most reliable season everywhere, and WA wildflowers peak from August to October. Queensland’s wet season starts in November.
You can mix powered sites with free camps to suit your budget and how much you want off-grid.

City drivers heading bush should plan for three things: distance, wildlife and road trains.
Fuel. In the NT and remote WA, servos can be 200 to 250 km apart, and roadhouse prices are well above city prices. Fill up whenever you drop below half a tank on regional routes.
Road trains. In the NT, WA and outback Queensland, road trains can be up to 53.5 m long. Only overtake when you can see at least 500 m of clear road ahead. When one is passing you, ease off the accelerator to help it clear.
Wildlife. Kangaroos are most active at dawn, dusk and overnight, and hitting one causes serious damage. Avoid driving on rural roads between dusk and dawn.
Speed and cameras. Limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (40 km/h in school zones) and usually 100 to 110 km/h on highways, with up to 130 km/h on some NT highways. Fixed, mobile and point-to-point cameras operate across the country, and fines are sent by post via the hire company.
Fatigue. Take a break every two hours. Fatigue is the biggest risk on long outback stretches. Planning a long haul? Pick a campervan or motorhome with a shower and toilet so you can stop wherever you need to.
