Our Road Trips Itineraries
Iceland's geography rewards campervan travel in ways that scheduled accommodation cannot match. The country's most dramatic lighting conditions, the midnight sun angling low across the South Coast at 11pm in June, a clear aurora developing over Mývatn at 1am in September, happen on their own schedule and with no warning. A campervan parked at the right location when those moments arrive beats a hotel room 64.4 km down the road by a wide margin.
The cost case is also straightforward. A twin room in a guesthouse on the South Coast during peak season costs ISK 25,000-45,000 per night (~€170-300). A campsite pitch with electricity costs ISK 2,000-4,500 for the same night, or less with a Camping Card. Over a 10-day Ring Road trip with two people, that difference compounds to a meaningful number. Iceland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for accommodation; the campervan closes that gap more aggressively here than almost anywhere else in the Indie network.
The infrastructure supports it. Iceland has operated a national campsite network for decades, and the 2015 wild camping regulations that restricted informal overnight parking simultaneously pushed investment into the registered site network. Electricity hookups, showers, and Wi-Fi are standard at most Ring Road campsites. Route 1 is treated and maintained year-round by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin). The combination of a dense campsite network, well-maintained paved roads, and no tolls on the national road system makes Iceland one of the most operationally straightforward campervan destinations in Europe, including for first-time hirers.
Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Iceland hire companies:
Unlimited kilometres: Drive the full Ring Road, add the Snæfellsnes loop, continue into the Westfjords, and the odometer doesn't affect your cost. Most competitors cap daily distance at 200-250 km; a proper Ring Road trip with detours regularly exceeds 3,219 km over 14 days.
Pick up centre steps from KEF arrivals: Fitjabraut 3 is 10 minutes from Keflavík Airport. No city transfer, no shuttle, no wasted first day in a hotel waiting for check-in.
24/7 road assistance: Included on every booking, active from the moment you leave the depot. Coverage applies on all permitted routes across Iceland, including the Westfjords and East Iceland fjord roads.
Basic Protection Plan included: Third-party liability and basic vehicle coverage from day one. For Iceland specifically, upgrading to a plan that includes windshield and sand/ash protection is worth considering; gravel road stone chips and Mýrdalssandur ash plain conditions are the most common claim triggers on Icelandic hire.
Flexible cancellation available: Cancel up to 31 days before pick-up without penalty.
Book now, pay later: Secure your dates today; full payment is not due until 30 days before pick-up.
Indie Campers is the world's leading road trip platform: 7,000+ vehicles across 70+ locations on three continents, with over 100,000 verified traveller reviews averaging 4.8 out of 5. The same fleet standards, booking experience, and 24/7 support structure you get in Iceland apply whether you're picking up in Keflavík, Los Angeles, or Sydney. For a destination as remote as Iceland, that consistency matters: you are not hiring from a local operator with three vans and a phone number. You are backed by a global network.
Summer (June, July, August)
National picture: Midnight sun runs from approximately June 20 through July 20 with 24 hours of usable light. All 170+ campsites are open. Highland F-roads (off-limits to campervans regardless) typically open late June. Sea level temperatures: 10-15°C. Mountain passes at night: 3-7°C. Cold mornings are standard in July regardless of sunshine.
Best for: First-time Iceland visitors; families; anyone wanting full road access and maximum daylight
Skip if: You are specifically chasing northern lights. Midnight sun eliminates aurora visibility from May through August entirely.
Booking note: Book the depot and South Coast campsites at least 3 months ahead for July travel.
Shoulder Season (May and September)
National picture: May brings increasing daylight and gradual opening of secondary roads. September brings the first reliable aurora activity from the third week of the month and a sharp drop in visitor numbers after August. Both months offer lower campsite costs and better access to major sites without the summer crowds.
Southwest Iceland
Keflavík International Airport (KEF) — Keflavík, 10 minutes from pick up centre
Best for: Every Iceland road trip. There is no alternative.
Keflavík is Iceland's only airport handling scheduled international routes. Direct flights operate from North America (New York JFK and EWR, Boston, Minneapolis, Seattle, Toronto, and others seasonally) and across Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and more) via Icelandair, British Airways, easyJet, Wizz Air, and others. The Indie Campers depot is 10 minutes from arrivals. No transfer bus, no city hotel, no connecting stop required. Take a taxi or rideshare from arrivals directly to Fitjabraut 3 and you're collecting your vehicle within the hour.
Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) in the city centre handles inter-island routes and domestic connections to the Westfjords and North Iceland. It receives no international scheduled flights and is not relevant to road trip logistics.
Payment and Deposit
A credit card is required at pick-up for the security deposit. Deposit amount varies by protection plan level; upgrading your plan reduces the deposit required.
Protection Plans
Basic Protection is included and covers third-party liability. For Iceland specifically, consider upgrading to a plan that includes windshield coverage; stone chips from gravel roads are the most common insurance claim on Icelandic hire. Sand and ash protection film is available as an add-on and is relevant for South Coast travel near the Mýrdalssandur ash plain and active volcanic zones on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The Camping Card Iceland
Covers unlimited nights at 120+ campsites for one vehicle and one adult. Approximate cost: ISK 24,900 (~€175 at 2024 exchange rates). Available at the Reykjavik City Campsite, online at campingcard.is, and at some tourist information points. For any Ring Road trip of 10 or more nights, the card pays for itself within the first 6-7 nights. Additional adults pay a per-night fee at each campsite on top of the card.
Campsite Booking
No single national platform. Most Ring Road campsites accept walk-ins but the South Coast corridor and Reykjavik fill completely in July. Book directly with individual campsites for peak season. For July travel, book at least 6-8 weeks ahead for key sites; 3 months ahead for the most popular South Coast stops.
Licence and Age Requirements
Speed Limits
Enforcement: Fixed radar cameras operate on several stretches of Route 1, particularly between Reykjavik and Selfoss and near Akureyri. Mobile units are active in the south and north. Fines are issued against the vehicle registration and processed against your hire agreement. Iceland's police do not extend leniency to foreign drivers.
7-Day Trip (South Coast and Golden Circle)
For current vehicle hire rates, check availability and live pricing at the time of booking. Rates vary by vehicle category, season, and lead time.
Budget trip costs (per couple, 7 days, vehicle hire not included): approx. €650-850
Mid-range trip costs (per couple, 7 days, vehicle hire not included): approx. €1,000-1,300
Premium trip costs (per couple, 7 days, vehicle hire not included): approx. €1,600-2,000 (includes Blue Lagoon, guided glacier hike, dining in Reykjavik)
Iceland operates from a single pick up centre close to Keflavík Airport. There are no one-way hire within Iceland because every trip starts and ends at the same location. That constraint fits the geography precisely: the Ring Road is a complete 2,144 km loop, and every major Iceland itinerary from the Golden Circle to the Westfjords circuit runs as a return trip to Keflavík. No route repeats; the island simply has that much to cover in a circle.
For travellers who want to extend into mainland Europe after Iceland, the Smyril Line ferry operates seasonally between Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland and the Faroe Islands and Denmark (Hirtshals). If you want to continue driving into the broader Indie Campers European network after Iceland, cross-border authorisation must be confirmed at the time of booking. This requires advance arrangement and is not standard on Icelandic hire.
Best for: Experienced travellers; aurora chasers; anyone returning to Iceland for a second trip
Skip if: You need guaranteed campsite availability across every planned stop; some South Coast sites close in late September.
Booking note: 4-6 weeks in advance is generally sufficient; South Coast campsites still fill fast in May.
Winter (October through April)
National picture: Northern lights are highest probability between October and March, peaking around the winter solstice with 18-19 hours of darkness. Route 1 is maintained year-round but demands winter driving experience and daily conditions monitoring. Black ice, storm-force lateral winds, and drifting snow are routine. F-roads are completely closed. Most campsites are closed; approximately 10-15 operate year-round including Reykjavik City Campsite and a handful on the South Coast.
Best for: Experienced winter drivers specifically pursuing northern lights; travellers comfortable with significant daily itinerary flexibility
Skip if: You are a first-time campervan hirer, a first-time Iceland visitor, or travelling with children.
Booking note: Build complete flexibility into every overnight plan in winter. Road closures can force itinerary changes with less than an hour's notice.
The most popular months for Iceland campervan hire are July, August, and June.
campervan-specific note: Gravel roads generate stone chips. Slow down when passing oncoming vehicles on gravel; this is where most windshield damage on Icelandic hire occurs. Check whether your protection plan covers windshield claims; it is the most frequent claim category on Icelandic hire.
Toll Roads
The Ring Road and Iceland's entire national road network carry no tolls. Two tunnels have charges: the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel near Akureyri (11.1 km) costs approximately ISK 2,500 for campervans, payable online via veggjald.is within 3 hours before or after transit. No booths. The Hvalfjörður tunnel northwest of Reykjavik (ISK 1,800 for larger vehicles) saves 45 minutes versus the mountain road alternative and is optional.
Road Rules Specific to Iceland
BAC Limit
0.05%. Lower than the US, UK, and most of southern Europe. A single standard drink is enough to push most adults to or above this limit. Zero alcohol before driving is the right call. First offence: immediate licence suspension, fines from ISK 130,000-250,000, potential detention. Police checkpoints are common on weekends and public holidays.
14-Day Trip (Ring Road with Snæfellsnes)
For current vehicle hire rates, check availability and live pricing at the time of booking. Rates vary by vehicle category, season, and lead time.
Budget trip costs (per couple, 14 days, vehicle hire not included): approx. €1,200-1,600
Mid-range trip costs (per couple, 14 days, vehicle hire not included): approx. €1,800-2,400
Premium trip costs (per couple, 14 days, vehicle hire not included): approx. €2,800-3,500
Iceland sits at the higher end of the Indie Campers European network for day-to-day costs. Fuel and food are significantly more expensive than southern European destinations. The Ring Road has no tolls and the Camping Card is the single most effective cost-reduction tool available.
