Campervan Road Trips from Perth

Perth sits at the edge of the Indian Ocean, 1,700km from Broome, 2,700km from Darwin, and 2,700km from Melbourne — the most isolated major city on earth, and one of the best possible starting points for a serious road trip. Pick up your campervan in Perth and you have four completely different adventures within reach: north along the Coral Coast to Ningaloo Reef and beyond; south through Margaret River's wine country and along the wild Great Southern coast to Esperance; east across the Nullarbor to Adelaide; or deep inland to the ancient red gorges of Karijini National Park.
Western Australia is the second-largest country subdivision in the world, and the distances between highlights are real. The freedom of a campervan is not just convenient here — it's the only way to reach places like Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand, and Karijini on your own schedule, camping right where you want to be. Unlimited kilometres and flexible one-way drop-off options mean you can drive the full Perth to Darwin or Perth to Melbourne route without backtracking. For inspiration beyond WA, our guide to top road trips in Australia by campervan covers routes from every corner of the country.

What to do in Perth

National Parks and Scenic Drives near Perth
Perth Coastline, Lakes, and Rivers
Best Campgrounds near Perth and along Western Australia

Cape Le Grand National Park — 720km/447 km southeast, 7–8 hours via South Coast Highway. Home to what many consider Australia's finest beach: Lucky Bay, where kangaroos wander the shoreline and the water turns an impossible shade of turquoise. Other highlights include Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove, Wharton Beach, and the challenging Frenchman Peak hike (2.5km return, steep final section, panoramic views over the Southern Ocean). Campervans welcome, but book ahead — Cape Le Grand gets busy in peak season.

Karijini National Park — 1,400km/870 km north, 13–14 hours via Great Northern Highway. One of Australia's most dramatic landscapes and still relatively unknown internationally. Ancient red gorges slice through the Pilbara, hiding emerald pools, waterfalls, and canyon swims that feel genuinely remote. Key highlights: Dales Gorge (Fern Pool and Fortescue Falls loop), Knox Gorge (steep 2.5km descent, excellent pool at base), Joffre Falls (ladders down to the falls, pools below), Weano Gorge and Handrail Pool, and the summit of Mt Bruce (WA's second-highest peak — intense and steep, bring layers, winds are strong at the top). Best May–October; avoid December–March when temperatures exceed 40°C and some roads flood. No phone reception in the park — download maps before you arrive. For a broader look at WA's underrated national parks, our blog has the full breakdown.

Nambung National Park / The Pinnacles — 245km/152 km north, 2h 30min via Indian Ocean Drive. The Pinnacles Desert is one of WA's most recognizable landscapes: thousands of limestone pillars rising from yellow sand, most dramatic at sunrise and sunset. Combine with a drive along the Turquoise Coast, passing Jurien Bay's calm waters and the dunes at Lancelin.

Kalbarri National Park — 590km/366 km north, 6 hours via Brand Highway. Two distinct sections — coastal cliffs dropping into the Indian Ocean, and inland red sandstone gorges carved by the Murchison River. The Loop Walk (3–4 hours) is the gorge highlight, with Nature's Window as a classic stop on the way through. Best May–September.

Stirling Range National Park — 380km/236 km southeast, 4 hours. WA's tallest peaks, unexpected cloud formations, and some of the world's most biodiverse wildflower displays (spring, August–October). Bluff Knoll summit hike (6km return) earns wide views over the South Coast.

Fitzgerald River National Park — 480km/298 km southeast, 5 hours. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve most visitors skip entirely. Outstanding wildflowers, coastal cliffs, whales in season (June–October), and near-empty beaches. Self-sufficient campervan travel is ideal here — limited services.

Indian Ocean Drive (Perth to Dongara) — 350km of sealed coastal highway, an easy scenic run north along beaches, sea stacks, and reef. A good warm-up for the longer Coral Coast route ahead.

Why Hire a campervan from Perth

Perth's position as Australia's most isolated capital city is exactly what makes it such a compelling road trip base. The distances between highlights are real, this is not a destination you tick off with a hire car and a few hotel nights. A campervan gives you access to places that simply don't have accommodation: Cape Le Grand's beaches, the Karijini gorges, the remote stations along the Coral Coast. It also changes the economics entirely. Western Australia's most spectacular spots have minimal infrastructure by design, which means camping fees are low and the experience is high.

Here's what sets Indie Campers apart for a WA trip specifically:

Unlimited kilometres — Perth to Esperance return is around 1,450km. Perth to Exmouth is 1,270km each way. Perth to Darwin is over 4,000km one-way. Distance caps would make most Western Australia road trips unworkable. All Indie Campers campervans include unlimited kilometres.

Flexible one-way hire — Drop off in Darwin, Melbourne, or Adelaide instead of backtracking to Perth. This opens up the two great WA epics: Perth to Darwin along the Coral Coast (10–14 days minimum), and Perth to Melbourne via the Nullarbor (12–16 days). No backtracking, no wasted days.

Kitchen kit included — Remote WA has long stretches without restaurants or takeaway. Cooking in your campervan isn't a preference here, it's often a necessity. Everything you need is on board.

24/7 roadside assistance — Covering all of Australia, including remote WA where the nearest town can be 300km away.

Pet-friendly options — Many WA national parks and free camps welcome dogs. Confirm pet policy at booking.

What's the Best Time to Hire a campervan in Perth?

May to October (Dry Season) — Peak Season for Western Australia

The clear winner for most of WA. Temperatures are mild to warm, rainfall minimal, and road conditions safe for all routes including the Coral Coast. This is when Karijini, Ningaloo, and the Kimberley are at their best. Water temperatures in Exmouth peak around 26–28°C (79–27.8 °C) in August–September — ideal for snorkeling Ningaloo Reef. Whale sharks aggregate at Ningaloo from mid-March to July; whale watching (humpbacks) peaks August–October. Book campgrounds months ahead for Cape Range National Park, sites sell out fast, especially around public holidays.

Best for: Coral Coast, Karijini, Ningaloo snorkeling, Margaret River, Broome, all inland routes.

October to April (Spring and Early Autumn) — Best for the South Coast

The shoulder and summer months are when the Great Southern shines. Wildflower season peaks August–November across southern WA, extraordinary along the South Coast. Lucky Bay and Cape Le Grand are at their warmest, and Esperance's beaches are at their most swimmable. Summer (December–February) brings heat inland but the south coast stays manageable — expect 25–30°C (77–30 °C) at Esperance. Avoid Karijini and the Pilbara in this window; inland temperatures exceed 40°C (40 °C) and some gorge tracks close after rain.

Best for: Perth to Esperance loop, Margaret River, Albany, Cape Le Grand, wildflower routes.

How many days do you need for a Perth campervan road trip?

3 to 5 Days

Perth City and Rottnest Island (approx. 300km, 3–4 days) Day 1: Arrive Perth — Cottesloe Beach, Fremantle Markets, Fremantle foreshore Day 2: Ferry to Rottnest Island — hire electric bikes, cycle to The Basin, Salmon Bay, Armstrong Bay, quokka encounters, snorkel Day 3: Head south — Serpentine Falls, afternoon in Margaret River town Day 4: Margaret River — Surfers Point, vineyard lunch, Caves Road drive back to Perth

7 to 9 Days

Perth to Esperance Loop (approx. 1,450km, 7–9 days) — Best October to April Day 1: Perth → Mandurah or Bunbury (2h) — easy start south Day 2: Bunbury → Margaret River (1.5h) — vineyards, Surfers Point, Caves Road Day 3: Margaret River → Denmark (2.5h) — Green Pools, Elephant Rocks, Waterfall Beach, Sunset Hill campsite Day 4: Denmark → Albany (1h) — Bald Head hike, Salmon Holes, Granite Skywalk, Castle Rock, The Gap Day 5: Albany → Bremer Bay (2h) — Betty's Beach, Little Boat Harbour, Blossoms Beach Day 6: Bremer Bay → Cape Le Grand NP (2h 45min) — Frenchman Peak, Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove Day 7: Cape Le Grand — Lucky Bay (kangaroos on the beach), Wharton Beach, Whistling Rock Day 8: Cape Le Grand → Esperance (45min) — Twilight Beach, Blue Haven, Pink Lake Lookout, Observatory Point Day 9: Esperance → Perth via Wave Rock (detour through Hyden) — Wave Rock, return to Perth

Campgrounds to book ahead: Conto Campground (Margaret River), Sunset Hill (Denmark), East Bay Campground (Albany, free), The Salt Cove Camp (Bremer Bay), Shelley Beach or Cost Corner (Cape Le Grand / Esperance).

10 to 14 Days

Perth to Exmouth / Ningaloo Reef (approx. 2,500km return) — Best May to September Day 1–2: Perth → Lancelin Dunes → Sandy Cape (3h) — sand dune boarding, first coastal camp Day 3: Sandy Cape → Kalbarri (3.5h) — The Loop Walk gorge trail (3–4 hours), coastal cliffs Day 4: Kalbarri → Shark Bay (3h) — Hutt Lagoon pink lake, Hamelin Pool stromatolites, Monkey Mia dolphin encounter Day 5: Shark Bay → Coral Bay (3.5h) — Ningaloo Reef snorkeling right from the beach, easy entry for all levels Day 6–7: Coral Bay → Exmouth / Cape Range NP (1.5h) — Turquoise Bay snorkel, Oyster Stacks, Lakeside, Mandu Mandu Gorge, Yardie Creek, whale shark tour (book ahead, seasonal March–July), sunrise from Charles Knife Canyon Day 8: Rest day at Cape Range — Osprey Bay for turtles at dusk Day 9–10: Exmouth → Broome (700km, allow 2 days) — Quoba Station overnight, Barn Hill Station cliff camp, sunset at Cable Beach

Note: Cape Range NP campsites are outstanding but book out months in advance. Rangers are strict on permits — if free camping in the area, move sites early in the morning.

21+ Days

Perth to Darwin via Coral Coast and Kimberley (approx. 4,300km, 21–28 days) The classic Western Australia epic. Perth → Lancelin → Kalbarri → Shark Bay → Ningaloo → Exmouth → Broome → Kimberley → Darwin. One-way hire, no backtracking. Everything the Coral Coast offers plus the red ranges of the Kimberley and Kakadu at the finish. See our Northern Territory Top End road trip guide for how to continue the journey once you cross into the NT.

Perth to Melbourne via the Nullarbor (approx. 3,400km, 12–16 days) Perth → Esperance → Norseman → Nullarbor Plain → Ceduna → Adelaide → Great Ocean Road → Melbourne. The Nullarbor crossing is genuinely iconic: the longest straight stretch of road in Australia (145km without a bend), whale watching at the Head of Bight (June–October), and the surreal emptiness of the plain itself. At the other end, the Great Ocean Road is one of the world's great coastal drives. Nobody drives this route and comes back the same way — it's a natural one-way journey.

Where to refuel and refill in Western Australia

Fuel Stations

BP, Caltex, Ampol — Common in Perth and all regional towns. Fill up at every opportunity once north of Geraldton or east of Albany.

Fuel notes for WA:

  • Perth to Exmouth: fill up at Carnarvon (900km from Perth). Don't skip it.
  • Exmouth to Broome: fuel at Exmouth, Nanutarra Roadhouse, Karratha, and Port Hedland. Gaps of 200–400km are normal.
  • Nullarbor crossing: fuel at every roadhouse — Norseman, Balladonia, Caiguna, Cocklebiddy, Mundrabilla, Eucla. The distances are not forgiving.
  • Remote roadhouse premium: expect to pay $0.20–0.50 AUD/litre more than Perth prices.
  • Carry a jerry can if heading to Cape Le Grand, Karijini, or any 4WD track — no fuel inside the parks.

Dump Stations

Margaret River — Conto Campground and Margaret River Caravan Park (Bussell Hwy) have dump access.

Albany — Albany Caravan Park, York Street.

Esperance — Esperance Caravan Park (Pink Lake Road), available to non-guests.

Exmouth — Exmouth Cape Tourist Village.

Broome — Broome Holiday Village, Cable Beach Road.

For current dump station locations across WA, WikiCamps Australia is the most reliable source — updated by the community in real time.

Helpful Apps

WikiCamps Australia — The essential WA app. Free camps, dump stations, water points, user reviews, offline maps. Non-negotiable for remote travel.

GasBuddy — Real-time fuel prices across Australia.

Parks & Wildlife WA (dpaw.wa.gov.au) — Book Cape Range, Cape Le Grand, Karijini, and all WA national park campsites. Set reminders for booking windows; peak sites go instantly.

Hema Explorer — Best offline maps for remote WA including 4WD tracks. Works without signal.

BOM Weather (Bureau of Meteorology) — Australian weather authority. Check before entering Karijini or any remote area in summer.

Driving Tips for Western Australia

Speed Limits: 110 km/h (68 mph) on highways, 100 km/h on regional roads, 50 km/h in urban areas. Speed cameras are common and fines are high — WA enforcement is consistent.

Road Conditions: Perth to Esperance via South Coast Highway — excellent sealed road throughout. Coral Coast (Brand Highway / North West Coastal Highway) — well maintained and sealed, some corrugations on minor access roads. Karijini — most gorge access roads are sealed but some tracks close after rain; check DPaW road conditions before arrival. Nullarbor — fully sealed, long and flat, watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk.

Wildlife: Kangaroos and emus on roads at dawn and dusk are a genuine hazard — slow down significantly in the hour after sunset and before sunrise, especially in rural WA. Cattle on unfenced open range roads in the north. Road trains (triple-trailer trucks) are common on highway routes — give them enormous space when passing.

Campervan-Specific: Know your vehicle height before approaching any roadhouse canopy or low bridge. Length matters on tight national park access roads — check maximum lengths for popular sites like Lucky Bay (Cape Le Grand) and Turquoise Bay (Cape Range) before booking.

No phone signal is normal in WA. Download all maps (Hema, Google offline, NPS), weather forecasts, and campground bookings before leaving the last major town. Don't rely on data for navigation east of Geraldton or south of Albany.

One-way Campervan hire from Perth

Perth → Darwin (4,300km, 21–28 days) — The quintessential WA road trip. Drive north along the Coral Coast through Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Ningaloo, and Exmouth, then continue through the Pilbara and into the Kimberley before reaching Darwin. You pass through Broome, Kununurra, Lake Argyle, and Kakadu. One of the great overland journeys in the world. Best done May–September. See the Northern Territory Top End guide for planning the Darwin end of the trip.

Perth → Melbourne (3,400km, 12–16 days) — East across the Nullarbor via Esperance and Norseman, through South Australia to Adelaide, then along the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne. The route combines remote coastal wilderness with one of Australia's most celebrated coastal drives at the finish. Best May–October for the Nullarbor; whale watching at Head of Bight peaks July–September.
