Athens is the only Greek mainland depot that puts Attica's own coastline, the Peloponnese's ancient sites, and a route north to Delphi and Meteora within a single, loopable radius. A coastal depot elsewhere in Greece can reach nearby islands by ferry, but none puts this specific combination, Sounion, Corinth, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, within a half-day's drive of each other the way Athens does.

The clearest argument for doing this by campervan rather than a hotel-and-tour-bus itinerary is the early-arrival advantage at every major site on this route. Overnight at a campsite near Nafplio or Olympia, and you're through the gate at opening, walking Mycenae's Lion Gate or Olympia's stadium while the coach car parks are still filling up. By the time the bulk of day-trippers from Athens arrive around 10-11am, you've already covered the busiest hour and moved on.

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (ATH, GPS 37.9364°N, 23.9445°E) sits roughly 30-33 km southeast of the city centre, connected by the M3 metro line in about 40 minutes, a 24-hour bus service, or taxi/rideshare in 30-40 minutes depending on traffic (a flat taxi rate of around €40 applies from 5am to midnight, €55 overnight). There's no practical secondary airport for this itinerary; Athens is the clear single arrival point.

From the depot, the destinations that matter most: Lake Vouliagmeni at 25 km/30 min, Marathon at 42 km/45 min, Cape Sounion at 70 km/1h, Corinth Canal at 85 km/1h, Nafplio at 140 km/1h30, Delphi at 180 km/2h30, ancient Olympia at roughly 320 km/3h30, Meteora at roughly 350 km/4h.

Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Athens hire companies:

Unlimited kilometres. A full Peloponnese-and-Delphi circuit from Athens easily clears 700-800 km return trip once you factor in Mycenae, Nafplio, Olympia, and the Mani peninsula, and that's before adding Sounion or Marathon as side trips. Most competitors in this market cap daily distance at 200-250 km and charge per extra kilometre past that. Indie Campers doesn't cap distance, so a longer Peloponnese loop or a spontaneous extra stop at Epidaurus doesn't turn into a surprise line item at drop-off.

One-way hire across multiple locations. Pick up in Athens and drop off at another confirmed Indie Campers depot instead of retracing the same route back. This matters specifically in Greece, where the toll motorways and long driving distances between regions make a return trip to the far Peloponnese or Meteora a genuine backtrack.

24/7 road assistance, included on every booking, genuinely useful on the narrower approach roads into Delphi, the Mani peninsula's mountain villages, or the switchback climb up Parnitha, where help can be further away than on the main motorways.

Basic Protection Plan included, with optional upgrades available at booking if you want a lower excess before a Nafplio old-town parking manoeuvre or the tighter turns on Parnitha's summit road.

Winter (December to February)

Temperatures: 6-13 °C, colder and occasionally snow-dusted around Delphi and the Peloponnese's mountain interior. Athens itself stays mild by comparison, with a modest Christmas market presence around Syntagma Square. Many smaller Peloponnese and Attica-coast campsites reduce hours or close for the season.

Best for: a short Athens-and-Peloponnese cultural trip focused on Mycenae, Nafplio, and Epidaurus rather than extensive camping or coastal time.
Skip if: beach time at Sounion or the Athenian Riviera is the goal; the sea is genuinely too cold and many coastal facilities are closed.

Spring (April to May)

Temperatures: 15-23 °C, the Attica countryside and Peloponnese hillsides at their greenest, wildflowers out around Olympia and the Mani. Archaeological sites are noticeably quieter than summer.

Best for: the full Peloponnese-and-Delphi circuit in comfortable conditions; a strong contender for the single best window on this itinerary.
Skip if: warm-water swimming is the priority; the sea is still cool through May.

Summer (June to August)

Temperatures: 26-34 °C on the coast, regularly exceeding 35-38°C inland in the Peloponnese and around Corinth in July-August. Peak season for the Athenian Riviera's beaches and for Epidaurus's ancient theatre festival, held through the summer months.

3 to 5 Days: Athens, the Attic Coast, and Corinth

The Attica and Corinth Loop (approximately 220 km, 3-4 days)

Day 1: Pick up in Athens, spend the afternoon at the Acropolis and Plaka. Overnight at Camping Athens, Peristeri (GPS 38.0086°N, 23.6719°E).

Day 2: Drive the coast road to Cape Sounion (70 km), Temple of Poseidon at sunset. Overnight at a campsite along the Athenian Riviera.

Day 3: Return via Lake Vouliagmeni and drive to the Corinth Canal (85 km from Athens). Overnight near Ancient Corinth.

Days 4-5 (extending): Add Marathon and Lake Marathon on the return leg, roughly 42 km northeast of Athens.

7 to 10 Days: The Full Peloponnese and Delphi Circuit

Peloponnese Ancient Sites Loop (approximately 550 km, 7-8 days)

Days 1-2: Athens and Cape Sounion as above.

Day 3: Cross the Corinth Canal to Mycenae (roughly 120 km from Athens), the Lion Gate and beehive tombs. Overnight near Nafplio (45 km from Mycenae, GPS approximately 37.5700°N, 22.8000°E).

Day 4: Nafplio's Venetian old town and the theatre at Epidaurus (30 km from Nafplio). Overnight at the same or a nearby site.

Fuel Stations

Diesel in Greece runs approximately €1.95/litre, with petrol at approximately €1.98/litre as of mid-2026, and a government fuel subsidy of roughly 16-20 cents per litre on diesel currently reducing the pump price somewhat, worth checking for current status before departure since subsidies can change. An EKO or Shell station on the Athens-Corinth National Road, just past the city's western edge, is the practical stop before the A8 toll stretch toward Corinth. A station at Lavrio, near the base of the Sounion peninsula, is the last reliable fill-up before the final stretch to the temple, where no fuel is available on-site. Toward Delphi, a station at Itea, on the coast below the sanctuary, covers that leg before the climb up to the archaeological site itself.

LPG

Availability concentrates in Athens and larger towns like Corinth, Nafplio, and Patras rather than smaller villages; plan LPG refills around those stops rather than assuming availability in the Mani peninsula's smaller settlements or high up toward Delphi.

Dump Stations

Camping Athens in Peristeri and campsites near Nafplio, Olympia, and Delphi/Itea all run dump points as standard. Plan tank management around these overnight stops rather than expecting standalone roadside dump stations, which are far less common in Greece than in Northern Europe.

Essential Apps

A Greek toll calculator app (such as the one at mydiodia.gr) to plan and budget for the Attiki Odos and A8/A7 tolls before you drive. A fuel-price comparison app to track the (generally modest) gap between motorway service stations and town pumps. Offline maps for the Mani peninsula's more remote southern stretches and Parnitha's upper roads, where signal can be inconsistent.

Minimum hirer age is 21, with a young-driver surcharge commonly applied under 25; a valid credit card is required at pickup for the security deposit. Non-EU drivers should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.

Set up your toll payment expectations before departure: Greece's motorways run a physical ticket-and-gate or fixed-segment system rather than a sticker vignette, so carry cash and a card at every Attiki Odos, A8, or A7 toll point. A toll calculator app helps budget the full route cost before you drive rather than being surprised at each gate.

Book Nafplio-area and Delphi-area campsites 2-3 weeks ahead for summer, and further ahead if your dates coincide with the Epidaurus summer theatre festival, which draws significant demand to Nafplio-area accommodation specifically.

Cross-border driving isn't relevant to a mainland Greece trip from Athens given the country's geography, but confirm your specific one-way route and drop-off depot at booking, since availability varies by season.

Speed Limits

Greek motorways run up to 120 km/h, national/rural roads 90 km/h, town centres 50 km/h down to 30 km/h in designated zones. Fixed and mobile radar enforcement is common on the Attiki Odos and national motorways.

Road Conditions

The Attiki Odos, A8, and A7 motorways are modern, well-maintained toll roads. Parnitha's summit road and the approach into Delphi bring genuine mountain curves and narrow switchbacks; this is where vehicle length and turning radius matter most on any Athens-based itinerary. Rural road discipline outside the main motorways can be less consistent than Northern European norms, so drive defensively.

Driving Culture

Athens driving culture runs assertive, with more lane-weaving and closer following distances than many Northern European visitors expect, particularly in city traffic; stay alert for scooters filtering between lanes. A warning triangle, reflective vest, and first aid kit are mandatory vehicle equipment; confirm these are present at pickup.

campervan-Specific

Central Athens, Nafplio, and Delphi/Arachova's historic centres all restrict or heavily limit vehicle access on their narrowest streets; park at a designated lot on the edge and walk in. Height clearance matters on some of Parnitha's forestry roads and Delphi's mountain approach; confirm posted limits before committing. No specific propane or tunnel restrictions apply to this route.

Athens, Attic Coast, and Peloponnese Circuit (approximately 450 km)

Campervan hire for a mid-size campervan over seven days runs in a broad range depending on season and category; the June-August peak pushes rates toward the top of whatever category you book, with May, September, and October running noticeably cheaper.

Fuel: at roughly 450 km return trip and typical campervan consumption of 20-25 L/100km, that works out to approximately 90-113 litres of diesel at approximately €1.95/litre, putting fuel at roughly €175-220 for the week.

Tolls: the Attiki Odos ring road (several segments at €2.00-3.00 each) plus the A8 toward Corinth and a stretch of the A7/Moreas toward Nafplio come to roughly €30-50 total for the week's driving, depending on exact routing and vehicle toll class.

Campgrounds: seven nights across Camping Athens, a Sounion-area site, and a Nafplio-area site average out to roughly €25-35/night, so budget €175-245 for the week's pitches.

Food: for a week blending Greek supermarket self-catering (AB Vasilopoulos, Sklavenitis, Lidl) with a handful of taverna meals, a souvlaki lunch averaging €5-8/person and a sit-down taverna dinner averaging €15-25/person, figure €30-55 per person per day.

Activities: the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum combined ticket runs approximately €20/adult, Cape Sounion entry approximately €10/adult, Mycenae approximately €12/adult, Epidaurus theatre approximately €12/adult; a typical archaeology-heavy 7-day Athens-and-Peloponnese budget runs €100-160 for two adults.

Parking: largely covered by campsite fees, with a few euros here and there for old-town perimeter lots in Nafplio.

Athens is currently the only confirmed Indie Campers depot in Greece, so there is no domestic one-way route: you can't pick up in Athens and drop off in Thessaloniki, Patras, or anywhere else in the country, since no other Greek city has a depot.

There is also no practical international one-way from Athens within the confirmed depot network. The nearest depots outside Greece, in Croatia (Zagreb, Split), sit well over 1,300 km away by road through multiple countries and borders, beyond a comfortable direct drive or a standard drop-off distance. Plan an Athens-based trip as a loop back to the depot.

And the corresponding fix to the closing paragraph of "Why Start Your Road Trip in Athens," which referenced this same invented route:

Athens is the only Greek depot that connects the Attic coast, the Peloponnese's ancient sites, and a route north to Delphi and Meteora within a single, driveable circuit. No coastal or island-adjacent Greek depot offers Mycenae, Olympia, and Delphi within a half-day's reach the way Athens does, and the one-way options north toward Thessaloniki extend that further into a genuine mainland traverse.

The experience only available from this starting point is the early-arrival advantage repeated across an entire trip, not just one site. Overnighting near Nafplio means walking into Mycenae's Lion Gate before the tour buses arrive; overnighting near Olympia means having the ancient stadium largely to yourself for the first hour; overnighting near Delphi means catching the sanctuary in the cool of early morning before the Mount Parnassus sun gets high. A hotel-based Athens visitor, doing each of these as a single long day trip by tour bus, gets none of that timing advantage.

The departure ritual worth building into the last morning: a souvlaki or tiropita from a counter near Monastiraki while the flea market stalls are still setting up, followed by a walk up to the Acropolis for one last look at the Parthenon before the day's heat and crowds build. Then load the van and point it south down the coast road toward Sounion, or west toward the Corinth Canal and the Peloponnese, and let the rest of mainland Greece take over from there.
