The honest geographic case for this depot is that it's a two-country base disguised as a one-city listing. From Tygelsjö, you can reach Malmö and Söderåsens National Park entirely on the Swedish side without paying a single bridge toll, or cross the Öresund Bridge once and unlock the whole of Zealand, Copenhagen, Roskilde, and the Kronborg coast road, on a single 16 km, roughly 15-20 minute crossing. No purely Danish depot offers that same combined Sweden-and-Denmark radius without a second border crossing or ferry.

The specific experience only a self-contained vehicle unlocks here is timing the Öresund crossing itself. Cross early morning southbound or northbound and you avoid the commuter traffic that builds on both approaches during weekday rush hours; arrive at Kronborg Castle by mid-morning, well ahead of the coach tours that come up from Copenhagen after lunch, and you get the ramparts and the strait view in relative quiet. A hotel-based visitor staying in central Copenhagen faces the same bridge-and-coast-road drive by hire car or train, without the flexibility to base overnight at a campsite near the castle itself and catch the next morning's light.

Copenhagen Airport (CPH, Kastrup, GPS 55.6180°N, 12.6476°E) sits on the Danish side, roughly 8 km southeast of central Copenhagen and about 45 km/40 minutes from the depot across the bridge; most international arrivals will land here and need to factor in that crossing before reaching the pickup centre. Malmö Airport (MMX, Sturup, GPS 55.5363°N, 13.3762°E) is the closer option for the depot itself, roughly 30 km/25 minutes away and served mainly by domestic Swedish and a handful of European routes, worth checking if your itinerary allows flexibility on arrival airport.

From the depot, the destinations that matter most: Malmö city centre at 15 km/15 min, Söderåsens National Park at 65 km/50 min, Copenhagen city centre at 37 km/33 min (bridge toll applies), Roskilde/Skjoldungernes Land at 60 km/45 min, Kronborg Castle/Helsingør at 84 km/1h15.

Here's what sets Indie Campers apart from other Copenhagen (Malmö) hire companies:

Unlimited kilometres. A Copenhagen-Kronborg-Roskilde-Söderåsen circuit covers 250-350 km easily once you've crossed the bridge twice and looped both sides, and that's before any extension further into Zealand. Most competitors cap daily distance at 200-250 km and bill per extra kilometre past that. Indie Campers doesn't cap it, so crossing the bridge more than once, or adding a detour to Louisiana Museum, doesn't turn into a surprise charge at drop-off.

One-way hire across 70+ locations. Pick up at this depot and drop off in Stockholm, Oslo, or another confirmed Nordic or wider European depot instead of retracing the same Öresund crossing twice. This matters specifically here, since the depot's Sweden-side location already puts you closer to a Sweden-or-Norway-bound one-way than a Copenhagen-based hotel traveller would be.

24/7 road assistance, included on every booking, genuinely useful if anything goes wrong mid-crossing or on the E6/E20 corridor at an odd hour, since bridge-adjacent breakdowns come with their own logistics.

Basic Protection Plan included, with optional upgrades available at booking if you'd rather have a lower excess before tackling central Copenhagen or Malmö's tighter city-centre streets.

Flexible cancellation available up to 31 days before pickup, useful if you're timing the trip around Kronborg's summer Hamlet performance dates, which shift year to year.

Winter (December to February)

Temperatures: -1 to 4 °C. Both Copenhagen and Malmö run Christmas markets through December, Tivoli Gardens' winter lighting display among them, and the Öresund Bridge itself sees noticeably less traffic than summer. Most rural Zealand and Skåne campsites reduce hours or close for the season.

Best for: a short city-and-Christmas-market trip based mostly around Malmö and central Copenhagen.
Skip if: Söderåsen's forest trails or Kronborg's outdoor ramparts walk are the priority; both are considerably less appealing in near-freezing coastal wind.

Spring (March to May)

Temperatures: 3-14 °C. Skjoldungernes Land's fjord-side trails green up, and Söderåsen's beech forest canopy is at its freshest just as it leafs out in May. Bridge traffic stays manageable outside weekday rush hours.

Best for: hiking both national parks without summer crowds; book campsites 2-4 weeks ahead for the May weekends.
Skip if: warm-water beach time at Ribersborgsstranden or the Danish Riviera coast is the goal; the Öresund stays cold well into May.

Summer (June to August)

Temperatures: 14-22 °C. This is peak season on both sides: Malmö's beach parks fill, Kronborg runs its summer Hamlet performances, and the Öresund Bridge sees its heaviest holiday traffic, particularly on Friday and Sunday afternoons as Swedish and Danish weekend traffic overlaps.

3 to 5 Days: Malmö, the Bridge, and Copenhagen

The Two-City Loop (approximately 150 km, 3-4 days)

Day 1: Pick up at the Tygelsjö depot, spend the afternoon in central Malmö, Malmöhus Castle and Möllevångstorget market. Overnight at a campsite on Malmö's edge (GPS approximately 55.590°N, 12.980°E), around €25-38/night with electric hookup.

Day 2: Cross the Öresund Bridge (16 km, roughly 15-20 minutes) into Copenhagen. Spend the day at Tivoli Gardens and Nyhavn's waterfront. Overnight at DCU-Camping Copenhagen Absalon in Rødovre (GPS 55.6650°N, 12.4400°E).

Day 3: Central Copenhagen sights in the morning, then drive north along the coast toward Klampenborg. Overnight at a campsite closer to the northern Zealand coast.

Day 4-5 (extending): Continue to Helsingør and Kronborg Castle before recrossing the bridge back toward the depot.

The Roskilde Add-On (approximately 200 km, 4-5 days)

Same Days 1-2 as above, then Day 3: drive west to Roskilde (roughly 35 km from Copenhagen) for the Viking Ship Museum and Roskilde Cathedral, with an afternoon in Skjoldungernes Land National Park. Overnight at a Roskilde-area campsite. Day 4: return east and recross the bridge to Malmö.

7 to 10 Days: The Full Two-Country Circuit

Fuel Stations

Diesel in Denmark runs approximately €2.18/litre (roughly 18 DKK), noticeably more expensive than Sweden, where diesel runs approximately €1.71/litre (roughly 19.5 SEK, reflecting a weaker exchange rate against the euro rather than a genuinely cheap price). This means it's generally worth filling up on the Swedish side before crossing the bridge into Denmark. A Circle K station in Tygelsjö, close to the depot itself, is the practical first and last fill-up. An OKQ8 or Circle K station on the E20 approach to the Öresund Bridge on the Swedish side is the last reliable stop before the toll crossing. On the Danish side, a Shell or Q8 station in Helsingør, before the final approach to Kronborg, is worth using since stations thin out slightly on the immediate coast road north of Copenhagen.

LPG

Available at larger stations in both Malmö and Copenhagen; less consistent in smaller Zealand towns, so plan refills around the two cities rather than rural stops.

Dump Stations

DCU-Camping Copenhagen Absalon and the Malmö-edge campsite both run dump points as standard. Confirm access for non-registered campers directly with the site if you're not staying overnight there; some DCU-network sites in Denmark restrict dump station use to paying guests.

Essential Apps

The Öresundsbron app for pre-booking bridge tolls and checking real-time crossing times, worth using before both directions of your trip. A Scandinavian fuel-price comparison app to track the meaningful gap between Danish and Swedish pump prices. Offline maps for the Söderåsen and Skjoldungernes Land park interiors, where signal is reliable but trail-level detail benefits from a downloaded map regardless.

Minimum hirer age is 21, with a young-driver surcharge commonly applied under 25; a valid credit card is required at pickup for the security deposit. Non-EU/non-Nordic drivers should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.

Set up your Öresund Bridge payment before you need it: buy a ticket online via the Öresundsbron site or app ahead of each crossing for the best rate, since booth pricing runs meaningfully higher and a BroBizz transponder (if you're doing several crossings) can lower the per-trip cost further.

Book Helsingør-area and Roskilde-area campsites at least a month ahead for the July-August peak, particularly if your dates line up with Kronborg's summer Hamlet performance run. Malmö and Söderåsen-area sites are generally easier to book on shorter notice, since demand skews more heavily toward the Danish side of this itinerary.

Cross-border driving between Sweden and Denmark within the EU/Schengen area is standard on Indie Campers bookings and doesn't require separate insurance arrangements beyond what's already included, but confirm this explicitly at booking given the depot's cross-border position.

Speed Limits

Swedish motorways run 110-120 km/h, Danish motorways 110-130 km/h, both dropping to 70-80 km/h on rural main roads and 50 km/h in town centres, down to 30 km/h in some Danish and Swedish residential zones. Automated speed cameras are common on both the E6/E20 corridor and Danish motorways.

Road Conditions

The E6/E20 in Sweden and the E20/E47 in Denmark are modern, well-maintained motorways for their entire length relevant to this itinerary. The Öresund Bridge itself is a well-engineered, high-standard crossing but can see reduced visibility and stronger crosswinds in winter storms, occasionally prompting temporary speed restrictions.

Driving Culture

Both Swedish and Danish driving culture are orderly and rule-following by broader European standards; lane discipline is strong and horn use is rare. The one adjustment for many visitors is Copenhagen's sheer volume of cyclists, city cycling infrastructure is extensive and cyclists have clear right-of-way in many junctions, so check bike lanes carefully before any turn in central Copenhagen or Malmö.

campervan-Specific

Height clearance matters most on the bridge's approach ramps and in central Copenhagen and Malmö's older streets; confirm your vehicle's height against any posted restriction before a city-centre approach. Length restrictions apply at some smaller Zealand campsite pitches, so confirm before booking if travelling in a larger Comfort-category vehicle. No specific propane or tunnel restrictions apply on this route. Parking in central Copenhagen and Malmö is limited to designated lots; there is no practical campervan street parking in either city centre.

Malmö, Copenhagen, Kronborg, and Roskilde Circuit (approximately 350 km)

Campervan hire for a mid-size campervan over seven days runs in a broad range depending on season and category; July-August peak pricing runs well above May, September, or October rates.

Fuel: at roughly 350 km return trip and typical campervan consumption, that works out to approximately 70-88 litres of diesel; filling mostly on the cheaper Swedish side at approximately €1.71/litre and topping up once in Denmark at approximately €2.18/litre averages out to roughly €135-175 for the week.

Tolls: the Öresund Bridge, crossed at least twice (into Denmark and back, possibly a third time if timing works out for a Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry alternative instead), runs approximately €123-126 one-way at the standard motorhome rate, or roughly €47-49 one-way with advance online booking or a BroBizz transponder; for two crossings, that's roughly €94-98 with advance booking or €246-252 at the standard walk-up rate.

Campgrounds: seven nights across a Malmö-area site, DCU-Camping Copenhagen Absalon, a Helsingør-area site, and a Roskilde-area site average out to roughly €26-36/night, so budget €182-252 for the week's pitches.

Food: for a week blending Danish and Swedish grocery self-catering (Netto, Rema 1000, ICA, Coop) with a handful of restaurant meals, a smørrebrød lunch or Möllevångstorget dinner, figure €30-55 per person per day.

Activities: Tivoli Gardens entry around €20-22/adult, Kronborg Castle around €19-20/adult, Malmöhus Castle around €3.50-5.50/adult, a Roskilde Viking Ship Museum visit adds a further modest entry fee; a typical castle-and-culture-heavy week runs €80-140 for two adults.

Copenhagen (Malmö) to Stockholm: approximately 615 km via the E4/E6, about 7 hours. A long north-south run through the length of Sweden, passing Jönköping and Lake Vättern; worth doing one-way if the plan is to continue into central Sweden rather than retrace the same 615 km back south.

Copenhagen (Malmö) to Oslo: approximately 520 km via the E6, about 6 hours. A cross-border run north through western Sweden into Norway, turning a Denmark-and-Sweden trip into a three-country itinerary.

Copenhagen (Malmö) to Hamburg: approximately 320 km via the E20/E45 through Denmark and across the German border, about 3 hours 15 minutes. A southbound option that trades the Scandinavian leg for continental Europe.

Copenhagen (Malmö) to Berlin: approximately 500 km via the E20/E45 through Denmark and Germany, about 5 hours. A longer continental option for travellers extending the trip well south of Scandinavia.

This depot's real value is the two-country radius most Denmark-focused planning overlooks entirely: Malmö and Söderåsens National Park sit on one side of a single bridge, and Copenhagen, Roskilde, and the full length of the Danish Riviera coast road sit on the other, all reachable within a half-day's drive of a depot that most visitors assume is simply "in Copenhagen." No purely Danish depot offers a Swedish national park at 65 km without a second border crossing, and no purely Swedish depot puts Kronborg Castle and Tivoli Gardens within a single bridge toll.

The singular experience only available from this starting point is timing the Öresund crossing itself as part of the trip rather than an afterthought: booking the toll online, choosing a weekday morning to avoid the weekend surge, and using the crossing to bookend two genuinely different countries in one loop, Sweden's quieter beech forests and canal-town character on one side, Denmark's castle coast and capital-city energy on the other.

The departure morning worth building in: an early walk along Ribersborgsstranden in Malmö, with the Öresund Bridge visible on the horizon and the Kallbadhus bathhouse just opening for the day, followed by a coffee and pastry from a Möllevångstorget bakery before loading the van. Then point the vehicle north toward the bridge, or south toward Söderåsen, and let whichever country you haven't started with take over from there.
